  • Huai'an Travel Tips

Unlike the delicate garden atmosphere of Suzhou or Yangzhou, the charm of Huai’an comes from the deep history and calm lifestyle shaped by the Grand Canal. As the “Canal Capital of China”, the birthplace of Huaiyang cuisine, and the hometown of the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, Huai’an offers travelers a slower and more authentic experience without excessive commercialization. With its ancient streets, canal scenery, culinary traditions, and cultural heritage, Huai’an is ideal for a relaxed 2–3 day trip.

Huai’an Travel Impression: Best Time to Visit and Transportation

Huai’an is located in central-northern Jiangsu, where the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal meets the Huai River. The city combines the openness of northern China with the elegance of Jiangnan water towns. Compared with famous tourist cities nearby, Huai’an has a lower travel cost. A comfortable 2-day trip usually costs around RMB 600–800 per person excluding transportation to and from the city.

The best travel seasons are spring and autumn, especially April–May and September–October, when temperatures are comfortable and perfect for walking along ancient streets, exploring canal culture, and visiting historical sites. Summer from June to August is less recommended because of the humid heat, frequent rainstorms, and many mosquitoes near waterways. If visiting during summer, arrange outdoor activities in the morning and evening and prepare sunscreen, rain protection, and mosquito repellent.

For railway transportation, choose your arrival station according to your itinerary. Huai’an Railway Station (淮安站) is more convenient for exploring the old downtown area, including the Grand Canal area, Qinghe Old Town, and cultural streets. Huai’an East Railway Station (淮安东站) is more suitable for visiting the Huai’an District area, including Zhou Enlai Memorial attractions and He Xia Ancient Town.

Within the city, the tram system is a convenient way to connect major attractions. The Huai’an tram costs only a few yuan per ride and is easy to use with mobile payment. Shared electric bicycles are also practical for short distances, but remember to wear a helmet because traffic inspections are strict.

Classic 3-Day Huai’an Travel Route: Canal Culture, Ancient Towns and Local Cuisine

Huai’an’s main attractions are concentrated in two areas: Qingjiangpu District (清江浦区), representing the modern urban area and canal culture, and Huai’an District (淮安区), representing the ancient city and historical heritage. A regional travel arrangement can reduce unnecessary transportation time.

Day 1: Old City Walking Tour and Grand Canal Night Scenery

The first day focuses on Qingjiangpu District, where most attractions can be reached by walking, tram, or cycling.

Qingyan Garden (清晏园) and Huajie Historical Street (花街)

Start the morning at Qingyan Garden (清晏园), one of the best-preserved classical gardens in northern Jiangsu. Known as one of the most elegant gardens in the Huai River region, it features pavilions, ponds, rockeries, and traditional architecture. The garden is especially beautiful when lotus flowers bloom in June.

After visiting the garden, walk to Huajie Historical Street (花街), a charming old neighborhood with traditional buildings, red lanterns, small cafés, and cultural shops. It is a good place for photography and experiencing the relaxed lifestyle of Huai’an locals.

    Li Canal Cultural Corridor (里运河文化长廊)

In the afternoon, explore the Li Canal Cultural Corridor (里运河文化长廊). This area represents the thousand-year history of Huai’an as an important transportation hub on the Grand Canal. Visitors can walk along the riverbanks, enjoy traditional architecture, visit cultural exhibitions, and climb the Guoshi Pagoda (国师塔) for views over the canal.

Night Cruise on the Li Canal (里运河夜游)

A night cruise on the canal is one of Huai’an’s best travel experiences. Around 19:00–20:30, when lights illuminate the old buildings and reflections appear on the water, the atmosphere becomes especially beautiful. Choose official ticket channels and avoid unofficial sellers. During summer evenings, bring strong mosquito repellent because the riverside area has many insects.

Day 2: Historical Huai’an District and Journey to the West Culture

The second day focuses on Huai’an District, where historical attractions are concentrated and can be explored by taxi or tram.

Zhou Enlai Memorial Hall (周恩来纪念馆) and Zhou Enlai Former Residence (周恩来故居)

Begin with Zhou Enlai Memorial Hall (周恩来纪念馆), one of Huai’an’s most important cultural attractions. The memorial introduces the life story of Zhou Enlai through historical documents, exhibitions, and architectural design symbolizing his spirit of dedication.

Nearby is Zhou Enlai Former Residence (周恩来故居), located on Fuma Lane (驸马巷). The former residence preserves the childhood environment where Zhou Enlai spent his early years, including traditional houses, furniture, and historical displays.

Huai’an Government Office (淮安府署) and China Water Transport Museum (中国漕运博物馆)

In the afternoon, visit Huai’an Government Office (淮安府署), one of the best-preserved ancient government offices from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Visitors can experience traditional administrative culture and historical exhibitions.

Next to it is the China Water Transport Museum (中国漕运博物馆), which explains how Huai’an became one of the most important canal transportation centers in ancient China. Interactive displays and multimedia technology make the history easier to understand.

Wear comfortable shoes because the stone paths inside these historical areas can be uneven.

    He Xia Ancient Town (河下古镇)

Spend the evening at He Xia Ancient Town (河下古镇), a historic neighborhood with more than 2,500 years of history. Known as the “Hometown of Scholars”, the ancient town preserves traditional streets, old houses, and local lifestyles. Evening is the best time to visit because the weather is cooler and the sunset creates a beautiful atmosphere.

Do not rush through the entire area. The charm of He Xia lies in slow walking, exploring small alleys, and tasting local snacks such as tea crisp (茶馓) and Wenlou soup dumplings (文楼汤包).

Day 3: Lake Landscape or Journey to the West Theme Experience

Option A: Hongze Lake Ecological Tour (洪泽湖)

For nature lovers, spend the third day at Hongze Lake Ancient Embankment Scenic Area (洪泽湖古堰景区). The lake is famous for its vast water landscape and unique “hanging lake” geographical feature. Visitors can cycle along the greenway, enjoy sunset views, and experience the peaceful atmosphere of one of China’s largest freshwater lakes.

Because the scenic area is large, renting an electric vehicle is recommended.

Option B: Journey to the West Cultural Experience

Literature lovers can visit Wu Cheng’en Former Residence (吴承恩故居), the birthplace of the author of Journey to the West. The garden-style residence combines cultural exhibitions with traditional architecture and usually takes about one hour to visit.

Families with children can continue to Journey to the West Theme Park (西游乐园), which offers themed rides and entertainment inspired by the famous Chinese novel.

Huai’an Travel Tips: How to Avoid Common Problems

    Summer Travel and Weather Preparation

Summer is the most challenging season for Huai’an travel because of high humidity, heat, sudden rainstorms, and mosquitoes near rivers and lakes. If traveling between June and August, avoid outdoor sightseeing from noon to afternoon. Sunscreen, umbrellas, portable fans, and mosquito repellent are essential.

    Transportation Tips

Avoid unlicensed tour guides and motorcycle drivers around He Xia Ancient Town (河下古镇). Use official taxis, ride-hailing apps, or public transportation.

For cross-district travel, the tram is usually more economical than taxis. Within the city center, shared bicycles are convenient, but always wear a helmet.

    Clothing and Equipment

Wear comfortable walking shoes because many attractions, including ancient towns and government offices, have stone roads and large walking areas. Bring a portable charger because some scenic areas have limited charging facilities.

    Shopping and Consumption Tips

Avoid buying expensive souvenirs from shops inside major scenic areas. Some “traditional handicrafts” and tourist products have high prices but average quality. Local specialties such as tea crisp (茶馓) and Qin Gong meatballs (钦工肉圆) are usually cheaper and more authentic when purchased from supermarkets or local shops outside tourist zones.

For Huaiyang cuisine, do not only choose famous internet restaurants. Many neighborhood restaurants offer better value and more traditional flavors.

What to Eat in Huai’an: Local Food Guide

Huai’an is one of the birthplaces of Huaiyang cuisine and has a deep culinary tradition.

Signature dishes include soft-shelled eel (软兜长鱼), a famous Huaiyang dish featuring tender eel cooked with traditional techniques; Pingqiao tofu (平桥豆腐), a smooth tofu dish enhanced with fish flavor; lion’s head meatballs (清炖狮子头); and Wensi tofu soup (文思豆腐), known for its delicate knife skills.

Local snacks are also worth exploring. Tea crisp (茶馓) is a traditional fried snack with thin golden strands and a crispy texture. Wenlou soup dumplings (文楼汤包) are famous for their thin skin and rich soup filling. Other local favorites include fried lotus root snacks (油端子) and Qin Gong meatballs (钦工肉圆).

For seafood lovers, Xuyi crayfish (盱眙小龙虾) is one of Huai’an’s most famous foods. From May to September, garlic-flavored and thirteen-spice crayfish are especially popular.

Recommended food areas include Nanmen Street (南门小街), Fuma Lane (驸马巷), and university district food streets, where visitors can experience authentic local flavors.

    Where to Stay in Huai’an

    Qingjiangpu District (清江浦区)

This is the best choice for first-time visitors. It is close to the Li Canal, shopping areas, restaurants, and nightlife. Visitors can easily enjoy evening walks and canal scenery. Mid-range chain hotels usually offer good value.

    Huai’an District (淮安区)

This area is ideal for travelers interested in history and culture because it is close to Zhou Enlai’s hometown attractions, He Xia Ancient Town, and traditional streets. It is a good choice for visitors who prefer a slower cultural journey.
