Huai’an (淮安) is a unique city in Jiangsu Province with a profound cultural identity. Known as the “Heart of the Grand Canal”, the birthplace of Journey to the West, and the authentic hometown of Huaiyang Cuisine, Huai’an combines history, waterways, food culture, and a relaxed lifestyle. Unlike many crowded tourist cities, Huai’an offers a slower travel experience where visitors can explore ancient canals, historical streets, famous figures’ hometowns, and traditional Jiangnan scenery.
The city’s tourism resources can be summarized as “Hometown of Great Figures, Canal Capital, Culinary Heritage City, and Birthplace of Journey to the West Culture.”
Huai’an Tourism Overview
Huai’an is one of the most important historical and cultural cities along the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, it was the headquarters of the Imperial Grain Transport Administration and was known as one of the most prosperous cities in southern China. Today, its tourism combines red culture, canal civilization, culinary traditions, and classical gardens.
The most important cultural landmark is Zhou Enlai’s Hometown Tourist Area (周恩来故里旅游景区), the only national 5A-level scenic area in Huai’an. It includes the Zhou Enlai Memorial Hall (周恩来纪念馆) and Zhou Enlai Former Residence (周恩来故居), where visitors can learn about the life and achievements of the former Chinese Premier in a peaceful historical setting.
Huai’an is also known as the “Canal Capital of China”. The Liyunhe Canal Culture Corridor (里运河文化长廊) recreates the charm of ancient canal life with illuminated waterfront scenery, boat tours, cultural streets, and traditional architecture. The Huai’an Government Office (淮安府署) preserves one of the largest Ming and Qing government offices in China, while the China Water Transport Museum (中国漕运博物馆) presents the history of grain transportation and canal development through modern exhibitions.
As one of the birthplaces of Huaiyang Cuisine (淮扬菜), Huai’an is recognized as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy. Visitors should try local specialties such as soft-shelled eel dishes, Pingqiao tofu, Qin Gong meatballs, Wendlou soup dumplings, and other traditional Huaiyang flavors.
Huai’an is also closely connected with Journey to the West culture. The city is the hometown of Wu Cheng’en (吴承恩), the author of Journey to the West. Attractions such as Wu Cheng’en’s Former Residence (吴承恩故居) and Huai’an Westward Journey Theme Park (西游乐园) transform literary imagination into immersive tourism experiences.

Best Seasons to Visit Huai’an
The best travel seasons for Huai’an are spring (April–May) and autumn (September–November) when temperatures are comfortable and outdoor sightseeing is pleasant. Spring is ideal for exploring ancient towns, canal scenery, and cultural attractions, while autumn provides cooler weather for walking tours and historical sites.
Summer is suitable for water-related attractions. Visitors can enjoy the Jinhu Water Forest Park (金湖水上森林公园), lotus flowers at Jinhu Lotus Pond (金湖荷花荡), and lakeside scenery around Hongze Lake. However, July and August can be hot and humid, so outdoor activities are better planned in the morning or evening.
Winter is quieter and suitable for cultural tourism, museums, ancient architecture, and local food experiences. Huai’an’s indoor attractions and traditional restaurants make it a comfortable winter destination.
