Chifeng Attractions

Located in southeastern Inner Mongolia, Chifeng City (赤峰市) is one of the most culturally and naturally diverse destinations in northern China. Known as the “Miniature of Inner Mongolia,” Chifeng combines ancient civilization, vast grasslands, geological wonders, forests, deserts, lakes, and Mongolian cultural traditions.

Chifeng is the birthplace of several important prehistoric civilizations, including Hongshan Culture (红山文化) and Xinglongwa Culture (兴隆洼文化). The discovery of the famous Jade Dragon (C-shaped jade dragon) at the Hongshan Culture site has given Chifeng the reputation as one of the origins of Chinese civilization. At the same time, the city preserves rich Khitan Liao Dynasty (契丹辽文化) heritage, making it an important historical and cultural destination.

The tourism characteristics of Chifeng can be summarized into four themes: world-class geological landscapes, grassland and forest scenery, prehistoric civilization, and Mongolian cultural heritage.

World-Class Geological Landscapes

The greatest natural attraction of Chifeng is the Hexigten UNESCO Global Geopark (克什克腾世界地质公园), which contains some of the most spectacular geological formations in northern China.

The famous Ashatu Stone Forest (阿斯哈图石林) is a 5A scenic area formed by ancient glacial erosion. Its unique granite formations, including “Kunpeng Spreading Its Wings” and “Seven Fairies,” represent one of the world’s rarest glacial stone forest landscapes.

Other geological highlights include Qingshan Rock Mortar Scenic Area (青山岩臼景区), ancient glacial relics, volcanic landscapes, and the highland lakes of Hexigten Banner.

Grasslands, Forests and Desert-Lake Landscapes

Chifeng is home to some of Inner Mongolia’s most beautiful grasslands.

Ulan Butong Scenic Area (乌兰布统旅游区) is one of the most famous grassland destinations near Beijing. Once part of the Qing Dynasty royal hunting grounds, it features rolling hills, birch forests, wetlands, and lakes. It has also become a popular film and television shooting location.

Dalinor Lake (达里湖) is one of Inner Mongolia’s largest inland lakes and an important habitat for migratory birds. The lake is famous for bird watching, sunset photography, and traditional winter fishing activities.

Yulong Sand Lake (玉龙沙湖) combines desert, wetlands, and lakes in one landscape. It is also closely connected with Hongshan Culture because the famous “Jade Dragon,” one of China’s earliest dragon-shaped jade artifacts, was discovered nearby.

Ancient Civilization and Historical Culture

Chifeng is an important destination for exploring northern China’s ancient history.

The Liao Dynasty History and Culture Museum (辽代历史文化博物馆) displays the history and achievements of the Khitan Liao Dynasty. The Liao Shangjing Museum (辽上京博物馆) introduces the history of the ancient Liao capital.

The Kalaqin Prince’s Mansion (喀喇沁亲王府) represents the highest level of Qing Dynasty Mongolian royal architecture and is one of the best-preserved Mongolian palace complexes in China.
