Zhangjiajie (张家界) is one of China’s most internationally famous natural tourism destinations, renowned for its spectacular quartz sandstone peak forest landscape, which has been described as a “magnified bonsai and miniature fairyland.” The unique geological formations inspired the fantasy landscapes in the movie Avatar and have made Zhangjiajie a global symbol of China’s mountain scenery.

The city’s core tourism area is the Wulingyuan Scenic Area (武陵源风景名胜区), a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site and one of the world’s most important geological landscapes. In 2010, the unique geological formation was officially named “Zhangjiajie Landform” by international geomorphologists.
