Yiyang Overview

Yiyang (益阳) is a prefecture-level city in north-central Hunan Province, located along the middle and lower reaches of the Zishui River and on the eastern edge of the Xuefeng Mountains. It is an important city in the Dongting Lake Ecological Economic Zone and is known as the “Land of Fish and Rice,” “Hometown of Dark Tea,” and “Hometown of Literature.”

Yiyang covers about 12,300 square kilometers and administers Heshan District, Ziyang District, Anhua County, Taojiang County, Nan County, and Yuanjiang City, together with the Yiyang High-tech Industrial Development Zone and Datong Lake Management Area. Its permanent population was about 3.69 million at the end of 2025.

Geography, Climate and Neighboring Areas

Yiyang borders Yueyang and Xiangyin to the east, Ningxiang and Wangcheng to the southeast, Loudi to the south, Changde and Huaihua to the west, and Huarong to the north. It is about 70 km from Changsha, making it an important link between the Changsha metropolitan area and western Hunan.

The terrain slopes from higher southwest areas toward the lower northeast, changing from mountains and hills to plains and the Dongting Lake region. Yiyang has a subtropical humid monsoon climate, with an annual average temperature of about 17.4°C and annual precipitation of around 1,524 mm. The climate is warm and humid, supporting agriculture, forests, tea cultivation, and wetland ecosystems.

Transportation

Yiyang has convenient railway and highway connections. The Shichang Railway, Luozhan Railway, and Chongqing-Changsha-Xiamen High-Speed Railway connect the city with Changsha, Zhangjiajie, and other major destinations. Highways including the Changsha-Zhangjiajie Expressway, Huachang Expressway, and Pingdong Expressway provide strong regional accessibility. High-speed rail connects Yiyang with Changsha in roughly 30 minutes, making it suitable for inclusion in multi-city Hunan tours.

Population, Ethnic Groups and Culture

Yiyang is predominantly Han Chinese but is also home to 45 ethnic minority groups. The Hui are the largest minority community, and Zhafu Hui Ethnic Township in Taojiang County is an important ethnic settlement.

Yiyang has more than two thousand years of history, with Chu, Three Kingdoms, and Huxiang cultural traditions deeply influencing the city. It is known as the “Hometown of Literature” and is associated with cultural figures such as Zhou Gucheng, Zhou Yang, and Zhou Libo. Anhua Dark Tea is one of its best-known cultural products, while tea-making traditions, bamboo culture, dragon boat traditions, and rural customs form important parts of its cultural identity.

Economy

Yiyang recorded a GDP of about RMB 238.15 billion in 2025. Agriculture remains an important economic foundation, with strong production of grain, rice, aquatic products, oil crops, and other agricultural commodities. Specialty industries include Anhua Dark Tea, Nan County rice-shrimp products, Yuanjiang asparagus, and Taojiang bamboo.

The city is also developing manufacturing, agricultural processing, new materials, and modern services while increasingly integrating agriculture, culture, ecology, and tourism.

Yiyang Culture and Tourism Bureau and Inbound Tourism Development

The Yiyang Municipal Culture, Tourism, Radio, Television and Sports Bureau (益阳市文化旅游广电体育局) has positioned Yiyang as the “second stop for domestic and overseas tourists traveling in Hunan.” The strategy takes advantage of Yiyang’s location between Changsha and Zhangjiajie, aiming to turn the city from a transit point into an important regional tourism destination.

For inbound tourism, the bureau emphasizes cooperation with Changsha and Zhangjiajie, joint tourism promotion, better transportation connections, and shared visitor flows. It also focuses on developing distinctive international tourism experiences based on Anhua Dark Tea, literature, rural culture, ecology, and local lifestyles.

At the same time, Yiyang is improving tourism infrastructure, multilingual information, payment convenience, professional services, and visitor facilities to create a more international-friendly tourism environment.

Tourism Development Positioning

Yiyang’s tourism development is centered on ecology, culture, tea, literature, agriculture, and rural life rather than simply sightseeing. Its future role is to become an important stop on Hunan’s Changsha–Yiyang–Zhangjiajie tourism corridor and an increasingly attractive destination for international visitors seeking authentic cultural and ecological experiences in central China.
