Located in Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture (湘西土家族苗族自治州), Hunan Province, Fenghuang Ancient Town (凤凰古城) is one of the most beautiful and best-preserved historic towns in China. Built along the Tuojiang River (沱江), Fenghuang is famous for its ancient wooden architecture, riverside stilt houses, stone-paved streets, traditional bridges, and rich Miao and Tujia ethnic cultures. Together with Zhangjiajie, Fenghuang is one of the most popular destinations in Hunan Province, attracting travelers who seek history, photography, traditional lifestyles, and cultural experiences.

    Why Visit Fenghuang?

Ancient Town Scenery and Historic Architecture: Fenghuang Ancient Town preserves a unique combination of traditional buildings, ancient streets, and riverside landscapes. Walking through the old town, visitors can explore narrow stone lanes, wooden houses, historic courtyards, ancient city walls, and local handicraft shops. The peaceful atmosphere in the morning and the charming lantern-lit streets at night make Fenghuang an ideal destination for photography and cultural exploration.

Tuojiang River and Riverside Views: The Tuojiang River is the heart of Fenghuang and creates the town’s most iconic scenery. Traditional boats slowly travel along the river, passing ancient bridges, wooden houses, and historic buildings. A boat ride or riverside walk offers beautiful views of the old town, especially when morning mist covers the river or when colorful lights illuminate the banks after sunset.

Diaojiaolou Stilt Houses and Traditional Lifestyle: The riverside Diaojiaolou Stilt Houses (吊脚楼) are among Fenghuang’s most recognizable features. These wooden houses built on supporting pillars reflect the traditional architecture and lifestyle of the Miao people in western Hunan. The best views of these houses can be enjoyed from the opposite riverbank or from a boat on the Tuojiang River.

Historic Landmarks and Cultural Heritage: Fenghuang contains many important historical sites that reveal the town’s long cultural history. The famous Hong Bridge (虹桥) offers beautiful views of the river and ancient town, while the East Gate Tower (东门城楼) represents the defensive architecture of the old city. Visitors can also explore the Former Residence of Shen Congwen (沈从文故居), the birthplace of the famous Chinese writer, the Former Residence of Xiong Xiling (熊希龄故居), and the Yang Family Ancestral Hall (杨家祠堂) to learn more about local history and traditional architecture.

Miao and Tujia Ethnic Culture: Fenghuang is an important cultural center for the Miao and Tujia ethnic groups. Travelers can experience traditional costumes, silver jewelry craftsmanship, folk songs, dances, handicrafts, and ethnic festivals. The town provides an excellent opportunity to understand the customs, beliefs, and traditional lifestyles of western Hunan’s mountain communities.

Romantic Night Views and Photography Experiences: The night scenery of Fenghuang is one of its greatest attractions. After sunset, lights decorate the ancient buildings, bridges, and stilt houses along the Tuojiang River. The reflections of colorful lights on the water create a beautiful atmosphere that attracts photographers and travelers looking for a romantic evening experience.

Local Cuisine and Traditional Flavors: Fenghuang offers many distinctive local dishes influenced by Miao and Tujia traditions. Popular specialties include Fenghuang Blood Duck (凤凰血粑鸭), a famous local dish combining duck meat with glutinous rice cakes; Miao Sour Fish (苗家酸鱼), a traditional fermented fish dish; Rice Tofu (米豆腐), a popular local snack; mountain-style Smoked Meat (腊肉); and Ginger Candy (姜糖), a traditional souvenir enjoyed by visitors.

Best Photography and Travel Experiences: Fenghuang provides excellent photography opportunities throughout the year. The riverside areas of the Tuojiang River are perfect for capturing stilt houses and reflections, while Hong Bridge offers classic postcard views of the ancient town. Early mornings are ideal for quiet street photography, and evenings provide the best atmosphere for capturing lanterns, bridges, and river scenery.

Fenghuang is a destination where ancient architecture, ethnic traditions, river landscapes, and local lifestyles come together. A visit here allows travelers to experience the charm of a historic Chinese riverside town while discovering the unique culture of western Hunan.
