Geographic Location and Climate
Chenzhou is located in southeastern Hunan Province, at the intersection of the Nanling Mountains and Luoxiao Mountains, where the Yangtze River and Pearl River water systems divide. It has long been known as the “Southern Gateway of Hunan” because of its strategic location connecting inland China with Guangdong and the coastal areas.
The city borders Ganzhou City (赣州市) in Jiangxi Province to the east, Shaoguan City (韶关市) in Guangdong Province to the south, Yongzhou City (永州市) to the west, and Hengyang City (衡阳市) and Zhuzhou City (株洲市) to the north. Chenzhou covers an area of approximately 19,300 square kilometers and administers Beihu District (北湖区), Suxian District (苏仙区), Zixing City (资兴市), and eight counties including Guiyang County (桂阳县) and Yizhang County (宜章县).
Chenzhou belongs to the subtropical humid monsoon climate zone, with four distinct seasons, abundant rainfall, and pleasant temperatures. The annual average temperature is around 17.4°C, while annual precipitation reaches about 1,450 millimeters. Due to the influence of the Nanling Mountains, the city features diverse microclimates, creating the characteristic landscape of “four seasons on one mountain and different weather every ten miles.”
Transportation Overview
Chenzhou is an important transportation gateway connecting Hunan Province with the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. It has developed a comprehensive transportation network integrating railway, highways, and aviation.
The Beijing–Guangzhou Railway, Beijing–Guangzhou High-Speed Railway, Beijing–Hong Kong–Macau Expressway, Xiamen–Chengdu Expressway, and National Highway 107 pass through the city, making Chenzhou an important transportation corridor in southern Hunan. The city is closely connected with Changsha City (长沙市) and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, with high-speed rail allowing convenient travel to major cities such as Guangzhou and Changsha.
Chenzhou Beihu Airport (郴州北湖机场) has further improved the city’s air transportation capacity, opening additional connections with major domestic cities and strengthening its tourism accessibility.
Population and Ethnic Groups
Chenzhou has a permanent population of approximately 4.56 million. The city is mainly inhabited by the Han ethnic group, while also being home to 26 ethnic minority groups, including the Miao (苗族), Hui (回族), Manchu (满族), and Mongolian (蒙古族) communities.
The diverse ethnic composition has contributed to Chenzhou’s rich cultural traditions, local customs, and intangible cultural heritage.
Culture and Historical Heritage
Chenzhou is a historic city with more than 2,200 years of cultural development. The Chinese character “郴” is unique to the city and is composed of the characters “林” (forest) and “邑” (city), meaning “a city in the forest,” reflecting its ecological environment and historical identity.
The city has played an important role in Chinese history and revolutionary culture. It was the birthplace of the Xiangnan Uprising (湘南起义), the location where the First Military Regulation (第一军规) was issued, and the place associated with the famous story of the “Half Quilt” (半条被子) during the revolutionary period. Chenzhou also produced many important historical figures, including revolutionary leaders and military commanders.
Beyond revolutionary heritage, Chenzhou has developed diverse cultural traditions influenced by Taoist, Buddhist, farming, and folk cultures. Its unique combination of natural landscapes and historical civilization has created a distinctive regional cultural identity.
Economic Overview
Chenzhou has a strong economic foundation based on natural resources, advanced manufacturing, and cultural tourism. In 2024, the city’s GDP reached approximately RMB 332.78 billion, maintaining steady economic growth.
Known as the “Hometown of Non-ferrous Metals in China” and the “Capital of Microcrystalline Graphite in China,” Chenzhou possesses abundant mineral resources, including tungsten, bismuth, tin, fluorite, and graphite. Its microcrystalline graphite reserves account for a significant share of global resources.
The city has developed three major industries: non-ferrous metals, electronic information and new energy batteries, and cultural tourism. Among them, non-ferrous metal processing is a traditional pillar industry, while tourism has become an increasingly important driver of green economic development.
