  • Enshi Overview

Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture (恩施土家族苗族自治州) is located in southwestern Hubei Province and is the only ethnic autonomous prefecture in Hubei. Known as the “World Selenium Capital,” “Natural Oxygen Bar,” and an important gateway connecting Hubei, Chongqing, Hunan, and Guizhou, Enshi combines spectacular mountain landscapes, ecological resources, and distinctive ethnic cultures. With its unique advantages in ecology, ethnic traditions, and tourism resources, Enshi is accelerating its transformation into a world-class tourism destination and an international eco-cultural tourism hub.

    Basic Information

Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture is one of China’s youngest autonomous prefectures and was established in 1983. It covers a total area of approximately 24,000 square kilometers and administers two county-level cities, Enshi City (恩施市) and Lichuan City (利川市), as well as six counties including Jianshi, Badong, Xuan’en, Laifeng, Xianfeng, and Hefeng.

Located in the transitional zone between the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and the Jianghan Plain, Enshi features a typical mountainous landscape dominated by karst landforms, valleys, forests, and rivers. The region is an important ecological barrier area in central China and has become one of the most attractive destinations for ecological tourism, outdoor adventure, and ethnic cultural experiences.

    Geography and Climate

Enshi is situated in southwestern Hubei Province, within the Wuling Mountains and Daba Mountains region. It lies near the mysterious 30° north latitude line, an area known worldwide for its unique natural landscapes and biodiversity. The prefecture borders Yichang City (宜昌市) to the east, Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture (湖南湘西土家族苗族自治州) to the south, Chongqing Municipality (重庆市) to the west, and Shennongjia Forestry District (神农架林区) to the northeast.

The region has a subtropical mountainous humid monsoon climate. Due to large elevation differences, Enshi has diverse microclimates, creating the natural phenomenon of “four seasons on one mountain and different weather within ten miles.” The annual average temperature is around 16.2°C, with abundant rainfall of approximately 1,600 millimeters per year. Mild winters, cool summers, fresh air, and high forest coverage make Enshi an ideal destination for summer vacations, wellness tourism, and ecological experiences.

    Transportation Overview

Enshi has gradually developed a modern transportation network connecting major cities in central and western China, providing strong support for tourism development.

The aviation network is centered on Enshi Xujiaping Airport (恩施许家坪机场), which continues to improve regional air connectivity and is advancing toward stronger aviation gateway functions. Railway transportation is supported by the Yichang–Wanzhou Railway and other regional railway lines, connecting Enshi with cities such as Wuhan, Chongqing, and Yichang.

The highway network has also expanded rapidly, with major expressways including the Shanghai–Chongqing Expressway and Shanghai–Chengdu Expressway linking the prefecture with surrounding regions. The improved transport system has strengthened Enshi’s position as a tourism hub in the Wuling Mountain area.

    Population and Ethnic Groups

Enshi has a population of approximately 4 million people. As China’s only ethnic autonomous prefecture in Hubei Province, it has a distinctive multicultural character.

The prefecture is home to 28 ethnic groups, including the Tujia, Miao, Dong, and other minority communities. Ethnic minority residents account for more than half of the local population, creating a rich cultural environment where traditional festivals, folk music, handicrafts, architecture, and customs remain actively preserved.

    Culture and Heritage

Enshi is an important cultural region where Bashu culture, Chu culture, and Tujia-Miao ethnic traditions meet. Its cultural identity is built around the themes of “mountains, selenium, tea, cool climate, and green ecology.”

The region is famous for its Tujia and Miao heritage, including traditional music, dances, textiles, and festivals. The internationally recognized folk song “Dragon Boat Tune (龙船调)” represents the unique musical heritage of western Hubei. Traditional crafts such as Tujia brocade, known as Xilankapu (西兰卡普), and folk events such as the Daughter Festival reflect the long history of local ethnic communities.

Enshi also possesses internationally recognized cultural and natural heritage resources, including Tangya Tusi Fortress Site (唐崖土司城址), which is listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site, and traditional tea-making techniques such as Enshi Yulu Tea Production Technique (恩施玉露制作技艺), recognized as an important intangible cultural heritage.

    Economic Development

Enshi’s economy is built around ecological industries, modern agriculture, tourism, and characteristic resources. The prefecture has developed a green economic model based on its advantages in natural resources and ethnic culture.

As the “World Selenium Capital,” Enshi possesses one of the world’s few independent selenium deposits. The selenium-related industry has become a major economic pillar, covering selenium-enriched agricultural products, food processing, health products, and biotechnology. The comprehensive output value of the selenium industry has reached hundreds of billions of yuan.

Agriculture is another important economic sector. Enshi is known as the “Central China Medicine Storehouse” and has strong industries in tea, tobacco, traditional Chinese medicine, and high-altitude vegetables. Enshi tea, especially selenium-enriched tea, has gained national and international recognition.

Tourism has become one of the fastest-growing industries, integrating ecological resources, ethnic culture, rural experiences, wellness, and outdoor activities.

Tourism Development Planning and Positioning of Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture Culture and Tourism Bureau

According to the development plans and international tourism strategies released by the Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture Culture and Tourism Bureau (恩施州文化和旅游局), Enshi is focusing on building a globally recognized tourism destination and expanding its international tourism market.

Core Positioning: Building a World-Class Tourism Destination

The Enshi Culture and Tourism Bureau has positioned the prefecture as a “world-class tourism destination”, promoting the international tourism brand “Secret Enshi · Journey of Gratitude (秘境恩施·感恩之旅)”. The strategy focuses on combining ecological protection, ethnic cultural inheritance, and high-quality tourism development.

The goal is to transform Enshi from a domestic scenic destination into an internationally influential eco-cultural tourism destination.

    International Tourism Expansion Strategy

The Enshi Culture and Tourism Bureau is actively strengthening inbound tourism development through several major initiatives:

    • Improving aviation gateway functions and expanding international transportation connections. By 2027, Enshi aims to achieve more than 100,000 annual international passenger arrivals and departures, with a goal of exceeding 200,000 by 2030.
    • Developing international markets with priority given to South Korea, while expanding cooperation with Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, Mongolia, Hong Kong, and other overseas markets.
    • Organizing international tourism promotion campaigns and participating in overseas tourism exhibitions to enhance Enshi’s global visibility.
    • Inviting overseas travel agencies and international tourism operators to conduct inspection tours and establish cooperative tourism routes.

    Improving International Visitor Services

The Enshi Culture and Tourism Bureau is also focusing on improving the travel experience for international visitors.

    Major measures include:

    • Producing multilingual tourism promotion materials and strengthening overseas digital marketing through international social media platforms.
    • Improving foreign currency exchange services and expanding duty-free shopping and tax refund services.
    • Promoting multilingual signage in major tourism areas, hotels, and public facilities.
    • Enhancing international reception capabilities by improving services for overseas visitors.

    Building Integrated Cultural Tourism Products

Enshi is promoting the integration of tourism with ecology, culture, agriculture, sports, and wellness industries. The prefecture aims to develop more international-friendly tourism products based on ethnic experiences, mountain adventure, ecological leisure, tea culture, and health tourism.

Through the development of international routes, improved tourism infrastructure, and stronger global promotion, Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture is positioning itself as one of China’s most distinctive mountain eco-cultural tourism destinations and an important international tourism gateway in central China.
