Zhengzhou (郑州市), the capital of Henan Province, offers one of the most diverse tourism landscapes in central China. Its strongest attractions can be understood through five themes: Shaolin Kung Fu and Mount Song, the origins of Chinese civilization, Yellow River culture, Shang Dynasty archaeology, and a rapidly growing collection of immersive cultural attractions. Zhengzhou's official inbound-tourism strategy now organizes the destination around five major international visitor IPs: “Songshan Shaolin,” “The Yellow River,” “Hometown of the Yellow Emperor,” “Walking through the Shang Capital,” and “City of Immersive Entertainment.”
One important correction should be made to older attraction lists. Zhengzhou currently has only one National 5A Tourist Attraction: Songshan Shaolin Scenic Area in Dengfeng. Songyang Scenic Area and Zhongyue Scenic Area are National 4A attractions, not separate 5A attractions. Zhengzhou's official 2022 scenic-area list clearly classified Shaolin as 5A and Songyang, Zhongyue and Gaocheng Observatory as 4A. Dengfeng has since expanded to seven 4A attractions.
By 2025, Zhengzhou reported 28 tourist attractions rated National 4A or above. Recent additions include Zhengzhou Shangdu Ancient City Tourism Area, Zhengzhou Haichang Ocean Park and Qinglongshan Ecocultural Tourism Area, all designated 4A following the 2024 evaluation.

Shaolin Temple and Mount Song
Songshan Shaolin Scenic Area (嵩山少林景区) is Zhengzhou's only National 5A attraction and its most internationally recognizable destination. The wider scenic area includes Shaolin Temple, the Pagoda Forest, Chuzu Temple, Dharma Cave and the mountain landscapes around Shaoshi Mountain and Sanhuangzhai. Shaolin is simultaneously associated with Chan Buddhism, Chinese martial arts and the UNESCO-listed Historic Monuments of Dengfeng in “The Centre of Heaven and Earth.”
Shaolin should not be viewed in isolation. Dengfeng's wider heritage landscape includes Songyang Academy, Zhongyue Temple, Gaocheng Observatory, Songyue Temple Pagoda and the Eastern Han stone que gates, forming one of China's most concentrated collections of religious, educational, astronomical and ritual architecture. Zhengzhou continues to position Songshan Shaolin as one of its leading international tourism brands.
Henan Museum
Henan Museum (河南博物院) is one of Zhengzhou's essential attractions for understanding the history of central China. It is one of China's important national-level museums and preserves major collections spanning prehistoric cultures, the Shang and Zhou dynasties and later periods. Zhengzhou government information lists a collection of around 140,000 cultural objects, including thousands of high-grade cultural relics.
For first-time international visitors, the museum provides valuable historical context before visiting archaeological landscapes such as Zhengzhou Shang City, Dahecun, Shuanghuaishu and the heritage sites around Dengfeng.
Only Henan · Drama Fantasy City
Only Henan · Drama Fantasy City (只有河南·戏剧幻城) in Zhongmu has become one of Zhengzhou's most influential contemporary cultural-tourism destinations. Rather than functioning as a conventional amusement park, it uses multiple theatres, immersive spaces and dramatic storytelling to interpret Henan, migration, agriculture, family memory and Yellow River civilization.
The attraction became a National 4A Tourist Attraction in 2022 and has since been selected for national digital and smart-tourism initiatives. Zhengzhou now treats it as a flagship attraction for domestic and international visitors and includes it in its “City of Immersive Entertainment” tourism product system.
Allow most of a day if theatre is a priority; trying to combine it with several other major attractions usually results in a rushed visit.
Zhengzhou Shang Dynasty Capital Site
Zhengzhou's archaeological importance is easy to underestimate. The Zhengzhou Shang City site represents an early Shang Dynasty capital dating back approximately 3,600 years, making the modern provincial capital one of China's most important ancient-city archaeological destinations.
The wider Zhengzhou Shangdu Ancient City Tourism Area (郑州商都古城旅游区) integrates the Shang City walls, Zhengzhou Shang City Archaeological Site Museum and surrounding cultural spaces. It was officially recognized as a National 4A attraction following the 2024 evaluation.
The museum and surviving city-wall landscape provide a strong introduction to the idea of Zhengzhou as an ancient capital rather than simply a modern railway and commercial city.
Yellow River Cultural Park
Yellow River Cultural Park (郑州黄河文化公园) in Huiji District is one of Zhengzhou's established National 4A attractions and an important place to experience the Yellow River landscape close to the city.
The area combines river views, cultural monuments and geographical interpretation. It is particularly useful for international travelers who want to understand why the Yellow River occupies such an important place in the historical imagination of Henan and northern China.
Zhengzhou is continuing to strengthen Yellow River tourism as one of its principal visitor brands, connecting cultural landscapes, archaeological heritage and new museum infrastructure along the river corridor.
Yellow Emperor's Hometown
Yellow Emperor's Hometown (黄帝故里) in Xinzheng is one of Zhengzhou's major ancestral-culture destinations. The site is associated with traditions surrounding the Yellow Emperor, or Huangdi, and plays a major role in annual ancestral worship ceremonies and Chinese clan-root culture.
It is currently a National 4A attraction and should not yet be described as 5A. Zhengzhou's official 2025 planning continued to identify the site as being developed toward National 5A status.
Together with nearby Neolithic and ancient Zheng-Han cultural remains, Xinzheng forms an important part of Zhengzhou's broader narrative about the origins of Chinese civilization.
Songyang Academy
Songyang Academy (嵩阳书院) in Dengfeng is a National 4A attraction and a component of the UNESCO-listed Historic Monuments of Dengfeng. It represents the Confucian and educational side of Mount Song, contrasting with the Buddhist identity of Shaolin Temple.
The academy is traditionally counted among China's major historic academies and is particularly associated with scholarship and Neo-Confucian learning. In current tourism classification, Songyang remains 4A rather than 5A.
Zhongyue Temple
Zhongyue Temple (中岳庙), also in Dengfeng, is a National 4A attraction and UNESCO heritage component. It represents imperial worship of Mount Song and later Taoist traditions and is one of the most important surviving temple complexes associated with China's Five Sacred Mountains.
Like Songyang Academy, Zhongyue Temple should be listed as 4A, not as a separate 5A attraction.
Dahecun Archaeological Site Museum
Dahecun Archaeological Site Museum (大河村遗址博物馆) has become one of the most important new cultural attractions in central Zhengzhou. Its new museum began trial operation on June 14, 2025, presenting the approximately 7,000-year-old Yangshao cultural landscape through archaeological remains, reconstructed environments and nearly 2,000 objects spanning prehistoric to early dynastic periods.
The museum is especially important because Zhengzhou is increasingly presenting archaeology as a connected visitor experience rather than isolated ruins. Official tourism planning links Dahecun with sites such as Peiligang, Shuanghuaishu, Xishan and Zhengzhou Shang City to explain the long development of settlement and early civilization in the Central Plains.
Kang Baiwan Manor
Kang Baiwan Manor (康百万庄园) in Gongyi is one of Zhengzhou's established National 4A attractions and an outstanding example of traditional merchant-family architecture in the Central Plains. Its fortified courtyards, residential compounds, warehouses and commercial spaces illustrate the wealth and organization of a powerful merchant family operating across several generations. Its 4A status is confirmed in Zhengzhou's official scenic-area information.
Gongyi can easily support a full heritage day when Kang Baiwan Manor is combined with Gongyi Grottoes, Du Fu's Hometown and archaeological sites in the surrounding area.
Fuxi Mountain Tourism Area
The Fuxi Mountain region in Xinmi provides Zhengzhou with one of its strongest natural-tourism clusters. Fuxi Mountain Grand Canyon, Red Stone Forest and Sanquan Lake are all established National 4A attractions, while the wider mountain area is being developed as a major leisure and vacation destination.
The landscape is characterized by valleys, red-rock formations, forested slopes and outdoor recreational facilities. It is a useful alternative for travelers who want a nature-based day outside the historical and museum-focused core.

Best Attractions by Travel Interest
For first-time international visitors, the strongest combination is Shaolin Temple, Henan Museum, Zhengzhou Shang City and Only Henan. Together they connect ancient civilization, archaeology, martial arts and contemporary cultural storytelling. Zhengzhou's current inbound-tourism strategy places these resources at the center of its international visitor products.
For Chinese civilization and archaeology, prioritize Henan Museum, Dahecun, Zhengzhou Shang City, Shuanghuaishu and Peiligang. Zhengzhou preserves an unusually continuous sequence of archaeological sites ranging from the Neolithic period through the Shang Dynasty and later historical eras.
For traditional culture, spend more time in Dengfeng and Xinzheng. Shaolin represents Buddhism and Kung Fu, Songyang Academy represents Confucian education, Zhongyue Temple represents sacred-mountain ritual and Taoism, while Yellow Emperor's Hometown focuses on ancestral traditions.
For families, the Zhongmu–Xinmi corridor is particularly strong, with Only Henan, Haichang Ocean Park, Fantawild, Movie Town and Silver Base International Tourism Resort creating one of central China's largest clusters of contemporary family and immersive attractions. Zhengzhou's current planning specifically identifies Zhongmu and Xinmi as major cultural-tourism destination zones.
Cultural Tourism Zones
Zhengzhou's attractions are widely dispersed, and they are easier to understand as several destination clusters rather than one compact sightseeing city.

This geography explains why Zhengzhou normally requires several days for a comprehensive trip. A central-city visitor can explore museums and Shang heritage efficiently, but Shaolin, Gongyi, Xinmi and Xinzheng are separate day-trip destinations.
