  • Henan Overview

Henan Province (河南省) lies in the heart of China and occupies much of the historic Central Plains (中原). The province takes its name from its position largely south of the Yellow River (黄河), while its traditional abbreviation, Yu (豫), comes from the ancient province of Yuzhou. Henan is also commonly called Zhongzhou (中州), meaning the central region.

With an extensive population, productive agricultural plains, major manufacturing centers, ancient cultural traditions and one of China’s strongest inland transport networks, Henan plays an important role in national food security, logistics, industry, cultural development and domestic tourism.

Henan covers about 167,000 square kilometres, representing approximately 1.73% of China’s national territory. Its permanent population stood at 97.44 million at the end of 2025, including 58.42 million urban residents and 39.02 million rural residents.

    Administrative Divisions

Henan administers 17 prefecture-level cities: Zhengzhou, Kaifeng, Luoyang, Pingdingshan, Anyang, Hebi, Xinxiang, Jiaozuo, Puyang, Xuchang, Luohe, Sanmenxia, Nanyang, Shangqiu, Xinyang, Zhoukou and Zhumadian.

Jiyuan (济源) is a county-level city directly administered by the province and is commonly managed within the institutional framework of the Jiyuan Industry-City Integration Demonstration Zone.

At the county level, Henan comprises 54 municipal districts, 21 county-level cities and 82 counties. Zhengzhou has served as the provincial capital since 1954, replacing Kaifeng.

    Geographical Location

Henan is located in central-eastern China, between approximately 31°23′ and 36°22′ north latitude and 110°21′ and 116°39′ east longitude. It extends roughly 530 kilometres from north to south and 580 kilometres from east to west.

The province shares borders with six provinces:

    Direction Neighboring Province
    East Anhui and Shandong
    North Hebei and Shanxi
    West Shaanxi
    South Hubei

This position places Henan between eastern China’s coastal economy, northern China, the Yangtze River region and the northwestern interior. It has therefore long served as a crossroads for migration, trade, military movement and cultural exchange.

    Topography and Landforms

Henan’s terrain generally slopes from west to east. Mountains form a broad semicircle around the northern, western and southern edges of the province, while extensive plains dominate the central and eastern regions.

The principal mountain systems include the Taihang Mountains (太行山) in the north, the Funiu Mountains (伏牛山) in the west and southwest, and the Tongbai Mountains (桐柏山) and Dabie Mountains (大别山) in the south. The central and eastern parts of Henan form part of the broad Huang–Huai–Hai alluvial plain, one of China’s most important agricultural regions. The Nanyang Basin (南阳盆地) occupies much of the southwest.

Plains and basins account for approximately 55.7% of the province, while mountains and hills make up the remainder. Henan’s highest point is Laoyacha (老鸦岔) near Lingbao, at about 2,413.8 metres above sea level, while its lowest point lies where the Huai River leaves the province near Gushi County, at approximately 23.2 metres.

    Rivers and Water Systems

Henan is the only Chinese province whose territory extends across the drainage basins of four major river systems: the Yellow River, Huai River, Yangtze River and Hai River.

The Yellow River crosses northern Henan from west to east and has profoundly influenced the province’s agricultural development, settlement patterns, transport routes and cultural history. Much of southern and eastern Henan drains into the Huai River system, while southwestern rivers flow toward the Han River and ultimately the Yangtze.

Water conditions vary considerably across the province. Mountainous western and southern areas generally receive more precipitation, while northern and eastern plains are more vulnerable to seasonal drought, flooding and water-resource pressure.

    Climate

Henan lies in a climatic transition zone between northern and southern China. Most of the province belongs to the warm-temperate zone, while southern Henan extends into the northern subtropical zone. The overall climate is classified as a continental monsoon climate transitioning between warm-temperate and subtropical conditions.

The province has four distinct seasons, with cold and relatively dry winters, warm and changeable springs, hot and rainy summers, and generally mild, clear autumns. Rainfall and heat occur during the same period, supporting intensive agriculture but also increasing the risk of summer floods, thunderstorms and heatwaves.

Recent provincial climate profiles indicate an average annual temperature generally between approximately 15.1°C and 15.9°C, although conditions are cooler in northern and high-altitude areas. Average annual precipitation varies widely, from roughly 513 to 1,133 millimetres, with the wetter areas concentrated in the south and mountains.

    Spring

From March to May, temperatures rise quickly but can fluctuate sharply. Dry air, strong winds and occasional late cold spells may occur, particularly in northern and central Henan.

    Summer

June to August is hot, humid and rainy. Most annual precipitation falls during this period, and intense rainstorms can affect low-lying plains, river valleys and cities.

    Autumn

September to November is usually the most stable season, with lower humidity, clearer skies and comfortable temperatures. It is an important period for agricultural harvesting and outdoor travel.

    Winter

December to February is generally cold and dry. Northern and western Henan experience lower temperatures, while southern areas around Xinyang and Nanyang are comparatively milder.

    Population and Urbanization

Henan remains one of China’s most populous provinces. At the end of 2025, it had a permanent population of 97.44 million, including 48.78 million males and 48.66 million females. The province’s permanent urban population reached 58.42 million, producing an urbanization rate of 59.95%.

Population is concentrated in the central and eastern plains, where cities, agricultural settlements and transport routes are closely spaced. Zhengzhou is the largest metropolitan and economic center, while Luoyang, Nanyang, Zhoukou, Shangqiu and other cities also have substantial urban and regional populations.

Like many parts of China, Henan is experiencing demographic change. The ageing population is growing, the number of births has declined, and the province recorded a negative natural population growth rate in 2025. At the same time, urbanization continues as residents move from villages and smaller counties toward regional cities and metropolitan areas.

    Ethnic Groups and Languages

The Han Chinese form the overwhelming majority of Henan’s population. All 56 officially recognized ethnic groups are represented in the province, although minority communities account for a relatively small share of the total population.

The most significant minority groups include the Hui, Mongol and Manchu communities. Minority populations are generally distributed in a pattern described locally as “widely dispersed with smaller areas of concentration,” particularly in parts of Zhengzhou, Nanyang, Shangqiu, Zhoukou and several designated ethnic townships. A recent provincial profile recorded approximately 1.59 million ethnic minority residents.

Standard Mandarin is used in education, government and formal communication. Everyday speech includes numerous varieties of the Central Plains Mandarin dialect group. Southern border areas also show linguistic influences from neighboring Hubei and Anhui.

    Historical and Cultural Background

Henan is one of the principal birthplaces of Chinese civilization. Its location in the middle and lower Yellow River basin supported early agriculture, settlement growth, state formation, writing, bronze production and urban development.

Numerous prehistoric cultures developed in the region before the emergence of the earliest Chinese dynasties. From the Xia and Shang periods through the Zhou, Han, Sui, Tang, Five Dynasties and Northern Song eras, parts of Henan repeatedly served as imperial capitals or political and cultural centers.

Four of China’s traditionally recognized eight ancient capitals are located in Henan:

    • Zhengzhou (郑州)
    • Luoyang (洛阳)
    • Kaifeng (开封)
    • Anyang (安阳)

These cities represent different periods of Chinese political, urban and cultural history. Henan’s archaeological record is particularly important for research into early capitals, the development of Chinese writing, bronze civilization and the formation of the ancient state.

    Central Plains Culture

Central Plains Culture (中原文化) is a broad term covering the historical, philosophical, artistic, agricultural and social traditions that developed in Henan and neighboring parts of central China.

    Important cultural themes include:

    • Yellow River civilization
    • Ancient capital culture
    • Chinese characters and oracle-bone studies
    • Traditional philosophy and scholarship
    • Agricultural civilization
    • Clan ancestry and Chinese surname culture
    • Traditional medicine
    • Martial arts
    • Folk customs and temple fairs
    • Opera, storytelling and regional music

Henan is considered an important origin area for many Chinese surnames and ancestral traditions. This gives it particular cultural importance for Chinese communities and family associations in other parts of China and overseas.

    Performing Arts and Intangible Culture

Henan Opera (豫剧) is one of China’s most widely performed regional opera traditions. It developed from local singing, storytelling and theatrical practices and is recognized for its strong vocal style, direct emotional expression and broad popular appeal.

Other regional traditions include Quju Opera, Yuediao Opera, traditional drum music, folk dances, paper cutting, clay sculpture, woodblock printing and festival customs.

Henan is also internationally associated with Chinese martial arts, especially Shaolin Kung Fu and Taijiquan. These traditions have become important channels for cultural exchange, education, performance and international tourism.

    Transportation Overview

Henan’s central location has earned it the traditional description “the heart of the nine regions and a thoroughfare to many provinces.” Modern railway, highway, aviation and logistics systems have strengthened this historic transport role.

    High-Speed Rail

Zhengzhou is the center of China’s first largely completed “rice-shaped” high-speed railway network. Major lines radiate north, south, east, west and diagonally toward surrounding provincial capitals and economic regions.

The network connects all of Henan’s prefecture-level cities and provides direct or convenient access to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Xi’an, Wuhan, Jinan, Hefei, Taiyuan and many other destinations. Zhengzhou East Railway Station is one of China’s largest and most interconnected high-speed railway hubs.

    Conventional Rail and Freight Transport

Henan lies at the intersection of several of China’s principal north–south and east–west railway corridors. Zhengzhou has long functioned as an important national railway junction and is also a major center for China–Europe and international freight-train services.

The development of the Zhengzhou International Land Port and related logistics facilities is strengthening the province’s connections with Central Asia, Europe and other Belt and Road markets.

    Expressways

By the end of 2025, Henan’s operational expressway network had reached 10,088 kilometres after 1,126 kilometres of new routes opened during the year. More than 90% of its counties and county-level cities had access to at least two expressway routes, while 13 prefecture-level cities had formed expressway ring-road systems.

    Aviation

Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport (郑州新郑国际机场) is the province’s principal airport and an important passenger and air-cargo hub in central China.

Its cargo network links Henan with major markets in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and North America. By October 2025, Zhengzhou Airport Port had handled more than 10,000 international cargo flights during the year and was connected with dozens of international cargo destinations.

    Economic Overview

Henan is one of China’s largest provincial economies. In 2025, its gross domestic product reached CNY 6.663 trillion, representing real growth of 5.6%.

    The economic structure was:

Economic Sector 2025 Added Value Share of GDP
Primary Industry CNY 553.81 billion 8.3%
Secondary Industry CNY 2.493 trillion 37.4%
Tertiary Industry CNY 3.617 trillion 54.3%

GDP per capita reached approximately CNY 68,240 in 2025. The service sector is now the largest part of the provincial economy, while manufacturing and agriculture continue to provide a strong productive base.

    Agriculture and Food Production

Henan is one of China’s most important agricultural and grain-producing provinces. Its extensive plains, deep farming traditions, irrigation systems and transport networks support large-scale production of wheat, maize, rice, peanuts, vegetables, livestock and processed food.

Provincial grain output reached approximately 67.55 million tonnes in 2025, helping Henan maintain its central role in national food security.

Agricultural modernization increasingly involves high-standard farmland, improved seed varieties, irrigation technology, mechanization, agricultural processing, cold-chain logistics and digital farm management. Food manufacturing is therefore closely linked to the province’s agricultural base.

    Manufacturing and Emerging Industries

Henan’s modern industrial economy combines traditional manufacturing with rapidly developing technology-oriented sectors. Major activities include equipment manufacturing, automotive production, food processing, electronics, chemicals, new materials, metallurgy and energy-related industries.

Zhengzhou and its airport economy zone have become major centers for electronic information, new-energy vehicle production, logistics and international trade. Luoyang retains a strong equipment-manufacturing and materials base, while other cities specialize in food production, chemicals, machinery, textiles, pharmaceuticals and resource processing.

In 2025, the added value of industrial enterprises above the designated size increased by 8.4%, while industrial investment rose by 13.3%, indicating continued expansion and upgrading of the province’s manufacturing sector.

    Commerce, Logistics and Regional Development

Henan’s location allows it to distribute goods efficiently to major consumer markets across northern, eastern, central and western China. Zhengzhou is a national commerce, logistics and transport center, supported by high-speed rail, expressways, air cargo, international freight trains and inland-port facilities.

Regional development is increasingly organized around the Zhengzhou metropolitan area, major transport corridors and specialized urban economies. Zhengzhou acts as the principal growth center, while Luoyang serves as a major industrial and cultural city and other prefecture-level cities support manufacturing, agriculture, energy, trade and regional services.

    Tourism Development

Henan’s tourism industry is built primarily on its position as a center of ancient Chinese civilization, Yellow River culture, archaeology, historic cities, martial arts, traditional villages, mountain landscapes and contemporary cultural entertainment.

The province promotes the tourism identity “A Journey through Henan, a Better Understanding of China”, translated from the Chinese brand “行走河南·读懂中国.” Rather than relying only on conventional sightseeing, current development emphasizes museums, archaeological research, cultural performances, immersive experiences, study tours, intangible heritage, rural tourism, major events and creative cultural products.

Henan currently has 724 officially rated A-level tourist areas, including 16 rated at the national 5A level and 233 at the 4A level. These figures illustrate the scale of the tourism industry, although the province’s broader strategy increasingly focuses on cultural quality, integrated destinations and visitor experience rather than simply increasing the number of sites.

    Tourism Market Performance

Henan received approximately 1.109 billion tourist visits in 2025, generating tourism revenue of about CNY 1.08 trillion. Visitor numbers increased by 4.1% and tourism revenue rose by 5.0% compared with the previous year.

Inbound tourism also expanded, with approximately 934,500 international visitor arrivals recorded during the year. Overnight inbound arrivals reached about 836,700, representing particularly strong year-on-year growth.

The province continues to strengthen international promotion, transport accessibility, multilingual services, heritage interpretation and cooperation between culture, tourism, transport, education and creative industries.

    Henan Province in Context

Henan’s importance comes from the combination of history, population, agriculture, industry and connectivity. It is both an ancient heartland of Chinese civilization and a modern inland province undergoing rapid economic and urban transformation.

Its plains help support China’s food supply, its cities form a major manufacturing and consumer market, and its railway, expressway and aviation networks connect the country’s principal economic regions. At the same time, its archaeological discoveries, ancient capitals, traditional performing arts and Yellow River culture give Henan an exceptional role in explaining the development of Chinese civilization.

For international visitors, researchers, investors and students, Henan provides an important perspective on China beyond the coastal megacities: a region where ancient history, agricultural society, modern logistics, industrial growth and cultural renewal remain closely connected.
