Henan Climate

Henan Province (河南省) lies in the transitional zone between northern and southern China. It stretches across the Yellow River, Huai River, Hai River and Yangtze River drainage systems, creating considerable differences in temperature, rainfall, vegetation and farming conditions from one region to another.

The province is surrounded by the Taihang Mountains (太行山) in the north, the Funiu Mountains (伏牛山) in the west and southwest, and the Tongbai and Dabie mountains (桐柏山、大别山) in the south. Central and eastern Henan consist mainly of broad plains. This landscape is often described as a basin-like or “dustpan-shaped” terrain that is higher in the west and lower in the east.

Henan has a continental monsoon climate transitioning from the warm-temperate zone to the northern subtropical zone. The Taihang Mountains in northern Henan and the Funiu Mountains in western Henan influence the movement of winter cold air. Mountain barriers can reduce wind speed in sheltered valleys, but high-altitude areas remain considerably colder than the plains.

Northern and central Henan belong mainly to the warm-temperate climatic zone, with colder winters, lower annual rainfall and more distinct seasonal temperature changes. Southern Henan, especially Xinyang and parts of Nanyang, has a stronger northern-subtropical influence, with warmer winters, greater humidity and more abundant rainfall.

Elevation Creates Cooler Mountain Microclimates

Temperature generally decreases with altitude. High mountain destinations such as Laojun Mountain (老君山), Baiyun Mountain (白云山), Laojieling Mountain (老界岭), Jigong Mountain (鸡公山) and the South Taihang Mountains are significantly cooler than nearby cities.

These areas are popular summer retreats, but weather changes quickly. Even in July and August, visitors may need a light jacket in the early morning, after rain or at high observation platforms.

Zhengzhou and Central Henan

Zhengzhou (郑州), Xuchang (许昌), Luohe (漯河) and surrounding central plains have hot summers, cool to cold winters and relatively short spring and autumn seasons. Summer temperatures frequently exceed 35°C, while winter nights may fall below freezing.

April, May, September and October are the most comfortable months for visiting the Shaolin Temple (少林寺), Mount Song (嵩山), Henan Museum (河南博物院) and the Yellow River Scenic Area (黄河风景名胜区).

Luoyang and Western Henan

Luoyang has a continental climate with dry winters, windy springs and hot summers. The city is famous for the Luoyang Peony Festival, normally centred on April, when temperatures are mild but can change significantly between morning and afternoon.

Mountain areas west and south of Luoyang, including Laojun Mountain, Baiyun Mountain and Chongdugou (重渡沟), are cooler and wetter than the city. Summer is suitable for mountain retreats, while October offers excellent autumn colours.

Kaifeng and Eastern Henan

Kaifeng (开封), Shangqiu (商丘) and Zhoukou lie on the eastern plains, where summer heat and humidity can be intense. Winters are usually cold, dry and occasionally foggy.

Kaifeng is especially attractive in spring and autumn. October and early November are associated with chrysanthemum displays, while spring is suitable for walking through historic neighbourhoods and visiting temples and gardens.

Anyang and Northern Henan

Anyang (安阳), Hebi (鹤壁) and Puyang experience colder winters and lower annual rainfall than southern Henan. Spring can be windy and dusty, while summer may include both heatwaves and thunderstorms.

The best months for visiting the Yinxu Archaeological Site (殷墟), Chinese Character Museum (中国文字博物馆), Red Flag Canal (红旗渠) and Taihang Grand Canyon (太行大峡谷) are April, May, September and October.

Jiaozuo, Xinxiang and the South Taihang Mountains

The South Taihang region includes Yuntai Mountain (云台山), Wanxian Mountain (万仙山), Baligou (八里沟), Baoquan (宝泉) and Guoliang Village (郭亮村). Mountain elevations moderate summer heat, but July and August are also the main rainy season.

May, June, September and October are ideal for hiking. During heavy rain, narrow canyons, cliff roads and waterfall areas may close temporarily for safety.

Nanyang Basin and the Funiu Mountains

Nanyang has a warmer and more humid climate than northern Henan. Summers are long and hot, while winters are relatively mild. The surrounding Funiu Mountains create cooler summer conditions and rich forest ecosystems.

Laojieling Mountain, Baotianman Nature Reserve (宝天曼), Xixia Dinosaur Relics Park (西峡恐龙遗迹园) and Danjiang Grand View Garden (丹江大观苑) are most comfortable from April to June and September to October.

Xinyang and Southern Henan

Xinyang (信阳) is the warmest and wettest major region of Henan. It has a stronger subtropical character, abundant vegetation, humid summers and comparatively mild winters.

Spring tea season is one of the best times to visit, particularly from late March to May. Jigong Mountain, Nanwan Lake (南湾湖), tea gardens and Dabie Mountain landscapes are also attractive in early summer and autumn.

Sanmenxia and the Yellow River Valley

Sanmenxia (三门峡) has a relatively dry inland climate, with strong sunshine and large temperature differences between day and night. Summers can be hot, while winters are cold and dry.

Spring and autumn are suitable for Yellow River scenery, historic routes and cave dwellings. Winter is famous for migrating swans around the Sanmenxia Yellow River Wetland (三门峡黄河湿地).

March: Early Spring and Variable Weather

May: Green Mountains and Outdoor Activities

May offers warm temperatures, green forests and longer daylight. It is an excellent month for Yuntai Mountain, the South Taihang region, Mount Song, Funiu Mountain and Xinyang.

Thunderstorms become more frequent toward the end of the month. Mountain visitors should check weather forecasts and scenic-area notices before departure.

Spring Clothing Guide

Use a layered clothing system. A long-sleeved shirt, sweater or light fleece and windproof jacket can be adjusted as temperatures rise during the day.

July: Heat, Humidity and Heavy Rain

July is usually the hottest and rainiest month. Central and eastern Henan can become extremely hot, while mountain areas are cooler but face higher risks of thunderstorms, flash floods and road disruption.

Avoid entering undeveloped valleys, riverbeds or mountain trails during heavy-rain warnings. Scenic areas may suspend cableways, rafting or canyon access.

August: Continued Heat and Unstable Weather

August remains hot and humid, although temperatures begin to fall slightly toward the end of the month. Forest parks, caves, museums and high-elevation resorts are more comfortable than exposed urban attractions.

Check the weather each morning and keep the itinerary flexible. Sudden storms can interrupt mountain transport and outdoor performances.

October: Peak Autumn Travel Season

October normally offers the most stable and comfortable weather of the year. Mountain forests begin changing colour, while the plains remain mild and sunny.

The South Taihang Mountains, Funiu Mountains, Laojun Mountain and Songshan Mountain are excellent for autumn foliage. Kaifeng’s chrysanthemum season also attracts large numbers of visitors.

The National Day holiday in early October is extremely busy. Travellers seeking quieter conditions should visit after the first week.

November: Late Autumn and Cultural Exploration

Temperatures fall quickly in November, particularly in northern and western Henan. Late-autumn colour may continue in lower mountain valleys, while museums, temples and archaeological sites become quieter.

Sanmenxia begins to attract visitors interested in wintering swans, depending on seasonal migration conditions.

September may still feel warm during the day, while October mornings and evenings become cool. Wear long sleeves and carry a light jacket.

December: Cold, Dry and Quiet

December is suitable for travellers who prefer fewer visitors. Historic cities, museums, Buddhist temples and traditional neighbourhoods remain accessible.

Mountain destinations may receive snow, but snow cover is not guaranteed at lower elevations. Check road and cableway conditions before visiting Laojun Mountain or other high-altitude attractions.

January: The Coldest Period

January is usually cold and dry, with freezing nights across much of the province. Anyang, northern Henan and high mountain areas are colder than Xinyang and Nanyang.
