Historical Culture and City Identity
Anyang’s cultural identity is deeply connected with the origins of Chinese civilization.
Birthplace of Chinese Writing
The discovery of oracle bone inscriptions at Yinxu established Anyang as the birthplace of systematic Chinese writing. More than 160,000 oracle bone fragments have been unearthed, preserving thousands of ancient characters and providing important evidence for studying early Chinese history.
Because of this heritage, Anyang is known as the “City of Chinese Characters.” The National Museum of Chinese Writing (中国文字博物馆) plays an important role in displaying the development of Chinese characters and promoting Chinese language culture.
Shang Dynasty Civilization
As the capital of the late Shang Dynasty, Anyang represents one of the most important archaeological and historical centers in China. The city’s cultural development is closely associated with ancient Chinese politics, religion, craftsmanship, and social systems.
Red Flag Canal Spirit
The Red Flag Canal (红旗渠) represents another major cultural symbol of Anyang. Built in Linzhou during the 1960s, the canal transformed the local environment and became a symbol of determination, innovation, and collective effort.
Together, Shang Dynasty civilization, Chinese character culture, and the Red Flag Canal Spirit form the three major cultural identities of Anyang.
