Xingtai (邢台) is one of the most underrated short-break destinations in southern Hebei. With more than 3,500 years of urban history, the city combines an ancient urban core, revived spring landscapes and the dramatic eastern slopes of the Taihang Mountains. In recent years, Xingtai has developed its new identity as a “Taihang Spring City”, centered on the “one street, one river, five lakes and sixteen springs” urban landscape system.
For travelers, Xingtai is easy to divide into two major tourism zones. The central city is best for history, temples, museums, old streets and spring-water landscapes, while the western Taihang Mountains contain caves, canyons, forests and outdoor attractions such as Kongshan Baiyun Cave, Tianhe Mountain and Xingtai Grand Canyon. Hebei's tourism authorities continue to list these mountain attractions among Xingtai's major destinations.
A 1-day trip works well for the old city, but 2–3 days is much better if you want to combine Xingtai's history with the Taihang Mountains.

For most international visitors, 3 days offers the best balance: one relatively relaxed cultural day in the city and two days for the western mountain areas.
Day 1: Ancient Xingtai, Springs and Citywalk
The first day should remain entirely within the urban area. Xingtai has invested heavily in reconnecting its historic neighborhoods, spring-water landscapes and cultural attractions, particularly around Kaiyuan Temple, Qingfeng Tower, Haonanguan, Beichang Street and the old city. These were among the principal sites highlighted during the 2025 Xingtai Tourism Development Conference.
Kaiyuan Temple
Kaiyuan Temple (开元寺), also known historically as Dongda Temple, is one of Xingtai's most important historic religious sites. Official planning documents describe the temple as having a history of nearly 1,700 years and preserving important remains including ancient halls and a Tang Dynasty Buddhist stone pillar.
Rather than treating the temple as a quick photo stop, allow time to appreciate the architecture, stone relics and quiet atmosphere. It provides one of the clearest introductions to the long history of the old Xingtai urban area.
Qingfeng Tower
Continue south toward Qingfeng Tower (清风楼), one of the traditional symbols of Xingtai.
The original tower is believed to date to the Tang–Song period and was rebuilt several times after wars and destruction; the structure seen today reflects a later Ming Dynasty reconstruction. It also stands close to what is regarded as one of the historic focal points of the old city.
This area works especially well as part of a walking tour because historic streets, restored neighborhoods and newer cultural spaces are concentrated nearby.
Xingtai Old Streets and Haonanguan
The old-city experience now extends through Beichang Street, Haonanguan (好南关) and surrounding historic lanes. Instead of reconstructing one isolated “ancient town,” Xingtai has been gradually revitalizing a larger historic urban district around Qingfeng Tower and Kaiyuan Temple.
Traditional streetscapes are now mixed with cafés, cultural shops, local snacks, art spaces and evening activities. The city has promoted the concept of “Visit the Taihang Spring City and stroll through Xingtai's old streets” as one of its main urban tourism themes.
This is therefore a good place to slow down rather than simply move from monument to monument.
Dahuoquan Park and Xingtai's Spring Culture
In the afternoon, continue toward Dahuoquan Park (达活泉公园) and the surrounding spring landscapes.
Xingtai historically developed around numerous natural springs, and their restoration has become central to the city's current tourism identity. The broader “one street, one river, five lakes and sixteen springs” project links historical culture with urban ecology and leisure spaces.
The park is also associated with Guo Shoujing (郭守敬), the celebrated Yuan Dynasty astronomer, mathematician and hydraulic engineer who was born in the Xingtai region.
If time permits, add Xingtai Museum (邢台博物馆) to gain a broader understanding of the city's archaeology, history and ceramic heritage. The museum has continued to organize exhibitions and public cultural activities, but travelers should check its latest opening schedule before visiting.
Recommended Citywalk
A practical central-city sequence is:
Kaiyuan Temple – Qingfeng Tower – Xingtai Old Streets / Haonanguan – Spring Landscapes – Dahuoquan Park
Allow approximately half a day to a full day, depending on whether you include the museum, cafés and evening activities.
Day 2: Kongshan Baiyun Cave and Lincheng
For a second day, travel north-west to Lincheng County (临城县) and explore one of Xingtai's most important geological attractions.
Kongshan Baiyun Cave
Kongshan Baiyun Cave (崆山白云洞) is a national 4A-rated scenic area and one of the highest-ranked natural tourism resources in Xingtai's official Taihang Mountain tourism planning. Together with Xingtai Grand Canyon, it is categorized among the city's top-level tourism resources.
The cave developed in ancient Cambrian limestone and contains a large collection of stalactites, stalagmites, stone curtains and other karst formations. The developed cave is divided into themed chambers, while the temperature remains around 17°C throughout the year.
This makes it particularly comfortable during hot summer weather, but visitors should still carry a light jacket because the temperature difference between the cave and outdoors can be noticeable.
Allow around 2–3 hours for the main cave experience. Wear shoes with good grip because underground surfaces can be damp.
Add Bianque Temple for Culture
Travelers interested in traditional Chinese medicine and history can combine Lincheng with Bianque Temple (扁鹊庙) in neighboring Neiqiu County.
The temple complex is dedicated to Bian Que, one of the most celebrated physicians in ancient Chinese tradition. It is a nationally protected cultural heritage site and national 4A scenic area, with a surviving complex of historic halls, gates and bridges.
Combining the cave and temple creates a more balanced day than visiting two large mountain attractions back-to-back.
Day 3: Tianhe Mountain or Xingtai Grand Canyon
For the third day, choose one major Taihang Mountain destination rather than trying to squeeze several into the same day.
Tianhe Mountain
Tianhe Mountain (天河山) in western Xingtai combines forested mountains, rocky valleys, streams and outdoor recreation. It is promoted as “China's Mountain of Love”, drawing on local associations with the legend of the Cowherd and Weaver Girl.
The area is best suited to couples, families and travelers who prefer a mixture of mountain sightseeing and recreational activities rather than demanding wilderness hiking. It is one of Xingtai's established national 4A attractions.
Some seasonal activities, including rafting and elevated attractions, can be affected by weather, maintenance and water conditions, so check the day's operating program when arriving.
Xingtai Grand Canyon
Travelers more interested in geology and dramatic mountain landscapes should choose Xingtai Grand Canyon (邢台大峡谷) instead.
The canyon system is characterized by steep red rock walls, narrow gorges, waterfalls and forested Taihang scenery. Xingtai's tourism planning ranks the Grand Canyon together with Kongshan Baiyun Cave among the highest-value tourism resources in the city's Taihang Mountain cluster, and it remains a national 4A attraction.
Allow most of the day for the excursion. Mountain roads and walking trails mean this attraction should not be treated as a quick stop before returning to the city.
Other Places Worth Adding
If you have more than three days, Xingtai has several additional mountain and cultural destinations worth considering.
Yunmeng Mountain (云梦山) offers cliffs, valleys and forest scenery; Jiulongxia (九龙峡) is known for mountain landscapes and seasonal scenery; Zijin Mountain (紫金山) combines geology and outdoor recreation; while Qiannanyu (前南峪) is known for its ecological mountain environment. These sites have all been included among Xingtai's established Taihang tourism attractions.
Travelers interested in ceramics should consider Neiqiu's Xing Kiln cultural sites and museums. Xingtai white porcelain was historically one of northern China's major ceramic traditions, and the city continues to develop Xing ware museums, archaeological interpretation and hands-on ceramic experiences.
🚄 Getting to Xingtai
By High-Speed Rail
Xingtai East Railway Station (邢台东站) is the most convenient arrival point for high-speed rail travelers. Xingtai lies on the important north–south rail corridor between Beijing, Shijiazhuang, Zhengzhou and other major cities, making it particularly suitable for a short Hebei weekend trip.
Train schedules vary, so international travelers should check the latest services through the official 12306 railway system before departure.
Xingtai's long-term tourism transport planning also identifies Xingtai East Station as an important tourism distribution point, with links to rental cars and scenic-area transportation.
Getting Around the City
Central attractions are relatively close together, so walking, city buses and taxis or ride-hailing services are sufficient for the first day.
A car is not necessary for a city-only visit.
Getting to the Taihang Mountains
For Kongshan Baiyun Cave, Tianhe Mountain, Xingtai Grand Canyon, Yunmeng Mountain and other western attractions, a private car, rental car or vehicle with driver is much more efficient.
Do not plan several mountain scenic areas in one day simply because they appear geographically close. Mountain roads, scenic-area entrances and walking time make actual journeys much slower than urban travel.
Where to Stay in Xingtai
For first-time visitors, central Xingtai is the most practical base. Staying near major commercial districts gives easy access to restaurants, shopping, taxis and the historic urban area.
Travelers spending only one night should remain in the city rather than moving hotels.
For a more relaxed three-day mountain trip, it can make sense to spend the second night closer to Lincheng or western Xingtai, particularly if the following morning begins with a mountain attraction. However, hotel choice is generally broader in central Xingtai.
International visitors staying in small county hotels should confirm in advance that the accommodation can complete foreign-guest registration.
🍜 What to Eat in Xingtai
Xingtai cuisine is straightforward, filling and strongly influenced by the wheat-based food traditions of southern Hebei.
He Family Dumplings (黑家饺子) are among the better-known traditional foods associated with the city, while Nangong smoked dishes (南宫熏菜) represent an established regional style of smoked and seasoned meat products.
Other foods worth trying include Renxian-style stir-fried pork (任县老炒肉), Xingtai pot stickers (邢台锅贴) and Weixian Huoshao (威县火烧), a baked wheat snack commonly filled or paired with savory ingredients.
For casual evening eating, old neighborhoods and food streets around central commercial districts offer a better introduction to everyday Xingtai food than restaurants around mountain attractions.
Best Time to Visit Xingtai
April to May and September to October are generally the most comfortable periods for combining historical sightseeing with Taihang Mountain excursions.
Spring brings pleasant temperatures and fresh vegetation, while autumn is particularly attractive for mountain landscapes and hiking. Hebei's official rural-tourism recommendations list April to November as the main season for Xingtai's mountain and countryside attractions.
Summer is possible and Kongshan Baiyun Cave's approximately 17°C interior makes it an appealing escape from outdoor heat. However, July and August overlap with the main rainy season, when mountain weather and flash-flood risks require greater caution.
Winter is cold but works reasonably well for museums, temples, old-city sightseeing and some cultural experiences.
⚠️ Important Xingtai Travel Tips
Take Summer Flood Warnings Seriously
This is particularly important for travel in July and August. Hebei authorities are currently emphasizing flood-season safety, especially around mountain valleys, narrow river channels, cliffs, tourism sites and other locations exposed to sudden heavy rainfall.
If heavy rain, thunderstorms or geological-hazard warnings are issued, postpone canyon hiking, rafting and mountain excursions. Never enter undeveloped ravines, riverbeds or closed outdoor areas simply because they appear in social-media travel guides.
Avoid Unreasonably Cheap Tours
Hebei's tourism authorities issued another summer travel warning in July 2026 regarding false advertising and “unreasonably low-priced tours.” Use licensed travel agencies, understand what is included in the itinerary and avoid tours that depend on compulsory shopping.
Wear Proper Shoes
Old-city sightseeing involves considerable walking, while mountain attractions may contain stone steps and slippery surfaces. Comfortable shoes with good grip are preferable throughout the trip.
For Kongshan Baiyun Cave, carry a thin jacket even during summer because the underground temperature remains around 17°C.
Keep the Mountain Schedule Flexible
Do not book a mountain day so tightly that one traffic delay or temporary attraction closure ruins the entire itinerary. Xingtai works better when one major mountain attraction is allocated most of a day.
Recommended 3-Day Xingtai Tour
Day 1: Kaiyuan Temple – Qingfeng Tower – Xingtai Old Streets – Spring City Area – Dahuoquan Park
Use the first day to understand Xingtai's 3,500-year-old urban history and its renewed identity as a spring city.
Day 2: Kongshan Baiyun Cave – Bianque Temple
Combine one of northern China's notable karst cave landscapes with Xingtai's traditional medical and historical heritage.
Day 3: Tianhe Mountain or Xingtai Grand Canyon
Choose Tianhe Mountain for a more recreational and romantic mountain experience, or Xingtai Grand Canyon for dramatic cliffs, gorges and stronger geological scenery.
This approach avoids excessive driving while combining the three sides of Xingtai that matter most to first-time travelers: ancient city, spring landscapes and the Taihang Mountains.
Xingtai Tours with Yaso Trip
A Xingtai Tour with Yaso Trip can be designed as a short 1–3 day private journey from Beijing, Shijiazhuang or another city along the high-speed railway network. A one-day tour can concentrate on Kaiyuan Temple, Qingfeng Tower, Xingtai Old Streets and the spring-city landscapes, while a two- or three-day itinerary can extend westward to Kongshan Baiyun Cave, Tianhe Mountain, Xingtai Grand Canyon or Xing Kiln cultural sites.
For international travelers, private transportation becomes particularly useful once the trip moves beyond the city center. Keeping the itinerary compact and choosing only one major Taihang attraction per day creates a much more comfortable experience than trying to collect as many scenic areas as possible.
