Hebei Transportation

Hebei Province (河北省) surrounds Beijing and Tianjin and forms an essential part of the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei transport network. Its highways, high-speed railways, airports and regional roads connect ancient cities, Great Wall sites, coastal resorts, Taihang Mountain destinations, Bashang grasslands, wetlands and winter-sports areas.

By the end of 2025, Hebei’s “six vertical corridors, six horizontal corridors and one ring” integrated transport network had largely taken shape. The province had approximately 220,000 kilometres of public roads, including around 9,000 kilometres of expressways. All prefecture-level cities were connected with Shijiazhuang by high-speed rail, while the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei high-speed railway network covered every prefecture-level city in the region.

For most international travelers, the most practical transport strategy is:

Arrive through Beijing, Tianjin or Shijiazhuang – use high-speed rail between major cities – use a private vehicle, tourist coach or local shuttle for scenic areas.

How to Get to Hebei by Air

Hebei’s Civil Passenger Airports

The statement that Hebei has 29 airports generally includes military, general-aviation and other aviation facilities. For ordinary passenger travel, the Civil Aviation Administration of China listed seven civil transport airports in Hebei as of 31 December 2025.

Regional airports have fewer flights than Shijiazhuang, Beijing or Tianjin. Flight routes and operating days may change seasonally, so travelers should not build a complicated itinerary around a regional flight without confirming the current timetable.

Shijiazhuang Zhengding International Airport

Shijiazhuang Zhengding International Airport (石家庄正定国际机场) is Hebei’s main aviation gateway. It is located northeast of Shijiazhuang’s central districts and close to Zhengding County.

The airport is connected with Zhengding Airport Railway Station (正定机场站) by a free transfer service. Hebei Airport Group has developed air–rail services that include station-to-terminal transfers, luggage storage and selected support services for eligible connecting passengers. The airport also operates ground-coach connections with cities and counties including Baoding, Hengshui, Xingtai, Dingzhou and An’guo.

The airport does not currently have a direct metro connection to central Shijiazhuang or Zhengding Ancient City. Airport coaches, high-speed trains, taxis and private transfers are the main options.

Using Beijing Airports for Hebei

Beijing Capital International Airport and Beijing Daxing International Airport are practical alternatives for northern and central Hebei.

Beijing airports may be more convenient for:

• Langfang and the northern Langfang counties
• Xiong’an New Area
• Baoding and northern Baoding
• Chengde and Jinshanling
• Zhangjiakou and Chongli
• Yesanpo and western Beijing–Hebei routes

Travelers entering Hebei through Beijing can continue by high-speed train, intercity railway, cross-provincial coach or private vehicle.

Using Tianjin Binhai International Airport

Tianjin Airport can be convenient for:

• Tangshan
• Cangzhou
• Huanghua
• Eastern Baoding
• Coastal and canal-based itineraries

The best airport depends on the first destination rather than the provincial capital. A traveler beginning in Tangshan or Cangzhou may save time by using Tianjin instead of Shijiazhuang.

International travelers should use the official China Railway 12306 website or app. Tickets are linked to the passport used during booking, and the original passport should be carried to the station.

Arrive at least 45–60 minutes before departure at large stations. During Chinese public holidays, ski season, summer coastal holidays and major festivals, additional time is advisable.

Many Hebei cities have several railway stations. The station with “East,” “West,” “North” or “South” in its name may be far from the historical center.

Shijiazhuang and Central Hebei Transportation

Shijiazhuang Urban Transport

Shijiazhuang is the only Hebei city with a full urban metro network. The metro is useful for transfers among the main railway station, commercial districts, museums and residential areas.

The metro does not directly reach:

• Shijiazhuang Zhengding International Airport
• Zhengding Ancient City
• Xibaipo
• Cangyan Mountain
• Zhangshiyan
• Western mountain counties

These destinations require a train, bus, taxi or private vehicle for the final section.

Zhengding Ancient City

The most practical gateways are:

• Shijiazhuang East Railway Station
• Zhengding Railway Station
• Zhengding Airport Railway Station
• Shijiazhuang Zhengding International Airport

From Shijiazhuang city, travelers can use public buses, taxis or private vehicles. From the airport, a taxi or reserved transfer is usually easier than combining several local buses.

A metro journey may take visitors to northern Shijiazhuang or Zhengding New District, but it does not deliver passengers directly to the ancient city’s principal gates.

Xibaipo

Xibaipo (西柏坡) is in Pingshan County, west of Shijiazhuang. There is no railway station beside the attraction.

The usual route is:

Tourist buses may operate from Shijiazhuang during busy periods, but a private car or tour vehicle is more reliable for combining Xibaipo with Tiangui Mountain, Tuoliang or other western destinations.

Cangyan Mountain and Jingxing

Travelers normally reach Jingxing County (井陉县) by road from Shijiazhuang. Cangyan Mountain, traditional villages and the Jingxing Taihang Sky Road are dispersed across mountainous areas, making self-driving or private transport the most practical option.

The official Jingxing Taihang Sky Road (太行天路) is approximately 60.4 kilometres long and connects 26 traditional villages and several rural tourism communities.

Zhangshiyan

Zhangshiyan lies in Zanhuang County, southwest of Shijiazhuang. Public coaches may reach the county or nearby towns, but a private vehicle is recommended for the final mountain transfer.

Avoid planning a late-night arrival because the final roads are mountainous and may have limited lighting.

Chengde Transportation

Reaching Chengde

Chengde South Railway Station (承德南站) is the principal high-speed rail gateway. It connects Chengde with Beijing and other cities through the Beijing–Harbin high-speed railway corridor.

Chengde Railway Station is closer to the traditional city, while Chengde South is farther away and normally requires a bus, taxi or private transfer.

Chengde Puning Airport provides selected regional flights but has a much smaller schedule than Beijing or Shijiazhuang.

Chengde Mountain Resort

The Mountain Resort is located in the central urban area. From Chengde Railway Station or central hotels, local buses and taxis are convenient.

From Chengde South Railway Station, allow additional transfer time. During summer weekends and public holidays, traffic near the resort gates can be congested.

Jinshanling Great Wall

Jinshanling Great Wall (金山岭长城) lies in Luanping County, between Beijing and Chengde.

The most dependable access is by:

• Private vehicle from Beijing
• Private vehicle from Chengde
• Organized Great Wall tour
• Seasonal tourist coach when available

There is no high-frequency urban railway service directly to the scenic entrance. Travelers planning sunrise, sunset or a long hike should stay near Jinshanling.

Saihanba and Weichang

Saihanba is several hours by road north of central Chengde. The usual route is:

Chengde – Weichang County – Saihanba – Yudaokou

Self-driving, a private tour vehicle or an organized coach is strongly recommended. Public transportation exists to Weichang, but local transfers between forest, grassland and accommodation areas can be inconvenient.

Saihanba should be planned as a two- or three-day regional trip rather than a day excursion from Chengde.

Qinhuangdao Coastal Transportation

Main Railway Stations

Qinhuangdao’s coastal attractions are served by several stations:

Shanhaiguan and Laolongtou

Shanhaiguan Railway Station is the most convenient arrival point. Local buses, taxis and private vehicles connect the station with the First Pass under Heaven and Laolongtou.

Shanhaiguan and Laolongtou are separate sites. Walking between all major sections is impractical, so use public transport or a private vehicle.

Beidaihe

Beidaihe Railway Station is outside the central beach area. Visitors need a bus, taxi or hotel transfer after arrival.

Summer traffic becomes heavy, especially on weekends. Reserve railway tickets and transfers before traveling during July and August.

Aranya and the Gold Coast

Aranya is a managed coastal community rather than an open public city district. Visitors normally enter with a hotel, event, dining or visitor reservation.

The most practical arrival points are:

Confirm the exact entrance, reservation code and hotel transfer before departure.

Tangshan Transportation

Tangshan City

Tangshan Railway Station is the main gateway for the urban area, Nanhu, the Kailuan industrial-heritage district and city hotels.

Tangshan North Railway Station is located closer to Fengrun and is not interchangeable with Tangshan Station.

Local buses, taxis and ride-hailing services cover central attractions. Hetou Old Street is best reached by taxi, private car or a dedicated visitor shuttle when one is operating.

Eastern Qing Tombs

The Eastern Qing Tombs are located in Zunhua, away from the principal railway lines.

The tomb complex is large, and internal scenic transport may be needed. It is difficult to explore efficiently by ordinary public buses.

Tangshan International Tourism Island

Yuetuo Island and neighboring coastal areas require a combination of road and boat transport. Boat operations depend on weather, tides and seasonal schedules.

Visitors should book through the official resort or ferry operator rather than arriving without confirming the day’s sailings.

Baoding and Xiong’an Transportation

Baoding City

Baoding East Railway Station (保定东站) is the main high-speed rail station. It is located outside the traditional city center.

Baoding Railway Station is better positioned for the historic urban area. Buses, taxis and ride-hailing connect the two station districts.

Baiyangdian and Xiong’an New Area

Useful railway stations include:

• Xiong’an Railway Station
• Baiyangdian Railway Station
• Baigou Railway Station

The correct station depends on the visitor center, hotel and section of the wetland being visited.

Baiyangdian tours generally require local road transport followed by authorized boats. Do not board unlicensed private boats, and confirm weather and wetland-access arrangements before departure.

Baishi Mountain

Baishi Mountain is in Laiyuan County. The most useful bases are:

• Laiyuan town
• Baoding
• Beijing
• Western Qing Tombs and Yi County road routes

Rail or coach passengers must transfer to a local vehicle for the scenic entrance. A private vehicle is the most flexible option for combining Baishi Mountain with nearby sites.

Yesanpo

Yesanpo is in Laishui County and is most easily reached by road from Beijing or Baoding. The rebuilt and upgraded scenic area was operating again in 2025, and Hebei expanded its tourist-direct-bus network in 2026 to include Yesanpo.

Railway and direct-bus schedules can be seasonal. Confirm the operating area because Yesanpo contains several separate attractions, villages and entrances.

Western Qing Tombs and Yishui Lake

The Western Qing Tombs and Yishui Lake are best explored by private vehicle from Baoding, Beijing or Yi County.

They can be combined in one regional itinerary, but their entrances are not within walking distance. Allow time for local roads, parking and internal scenic transport.

Zhangjiakou and Chongli Transportation

Zhangjiakou City

Zhangjiakou Railway Station is the main high-speed rail hub. It connects the city with Beijing and the national railway network.

Zhangjiakou Ningyuan Airport offers selected regional flights. Local buses and taxis connect the airport, railway station and city center.

Chongli Ski Area

The Beijing–Zhangjiakou high-speed railway and Chongli branch serve:

• Taizicheng Station
• Chongli Station

Taizicheng Station serves the Olympic competition area, while Chongli Station serves the urban district. Resort shuttle buses and reserved transfers connect the stations with ski areas. The Taizicheng–Chongli section opened as the final railway connection between the Olympic zone and Chongli town.

During ski season, reserve space for ski equipment according to current railway rules and confirm the resort shuttle timetable.

Grassland Sky Road

The Grassland Sky Road (草原天路) is fundamentally a self-driving destination. It has multiple entrances and long stretches without frequent public transport.

Travelers should:

• Download offline maps
• Refuel before entering
• Carry water and warm clothing
• Avoid driving after dark
• Check wind, rain and fog forecasts
• Confirm which eastern or western section is planned

Yuzhou Ancient City and Nuanquan

Yuxian County is most conveniently reached by road from Beijing, Zhangjiakou or Baoding. The Beijing–Yuxian Expressway has improved access and provides service areas linked with regional culture and tourism.

Public coaches reach Yuxian, but private transport is preferable for combining Yuzhou Ancient City, Nuanquan Ancient Town, forts, villages and winter folk performances.

Langfang Transportation

Langfang’s location between Beijing and Tianjin makes it unusually dependent on the transport systems of both municipalities.

Central Langfang

Langfang Railway Station and Guangyang Railway Station provide rail access from Beijing and Tianjin. Local taxis and buses serve the urban area.

Northern Langfang Counties

Sanhe, Yanjiao, Dachang and Xianghe are closely connected with eastern Beijing through commuter buses, local rail services and roads.

Travel times can increase sharply during weekday commuting periods.

Dream of Red Mansions Theatre Fantasy City

The theater complex is best reached by:

• Taxi or private transfer from Langfang Railway Station
• Private vehicle from Beijing or Tianjin
• Event shuttle when announced

Because performances may continue into the evening, visitors should confirm the final return transport or stay overnight nearby.

Cangzhou Transportation

Cangzhou City

Cangzhou West Railway Station handles high-speed trains, while Cangzhou Railway Station serves conventional routes.

The high-speed station is outside the older city districts. Allow enough time for a bus or taxi transfer.

Wuqiao Acrobatics World

Wuqiao County is on the Beijing–Shanghai conventional railway corridor. Travelers can use Wuqiao Railway Station or reach the destination by road from Cangzhou, Dezhou or Jinan.

During the China Wuqiao International Circus Festival, venues may be divided between Wuqiao, Cangzhou and Shijiazhuang. Confirm the exact performance venue before booking transport.

Nandagang Wetland and Huanghua

These coastal and wetland destinations are best reached by road from Cangzhou, Huanghua or Tianjin.

Cangzhou’s coastal ports primarily serve freight and logistics. They should not be treated as regular passenger arrival ports for international tourists.

Hengshui Transportation

Hengshui North Railway Station is the main high-speed rail gateway, while Hengshui Railway Station serves conventional routes.

Hengshui Lake is accessible by city bus, taxi or private car. For birdwatching or early-morning photography, prearranged transport is preferable.

The lake area is also suitable for recreational cycling, and the 2026 China Road Cycling Open held a major race beside Hengshui Lake.

Xingtai Transportation

Xingtai City

Xingtai East Railway Station is the main high-speed station. Xingtai Railway Station is closer to older urban districts.

Xingtai Dalian Airport provides limited regional flight services.

Xingtai Mountain Attractions

Destinations such as Xingtai Grand Canyon, Tianhe Mountain, Yunmeng Mountain and Qiannanyu require road transfers into the Taihang Mountains.

The most practical arrangement is:

Xingtai East – private vehicle – mountain hotel or county base

Public county buses may be available, but they rarely provide convenient connections among several scenic areas.

Handan Transportation

Handan City

Handan East Railway Station is the main high-speed rail station, while Handan Railway Station is closer to central neighborhoods.

Handan Airport provides selected domestic flights.

Guangfu Ancient City

Guangfu lies east of central Handan. Buses, taxis and private vehicles are available, but a reserved transfer is easiest for groups.

The ancient city itself is suitable for walking and cycling after arrival.

Wahuang Palace and Western Handan

Wahuang Palace, East Taihang, Jingniang Lake, Qibugou and Ancient Wudang Mountain are spread across She County and Wu’an.

A private vehicle or tour coach is strongly recommended. The mountain roads can contain sharp bends, tunnels and steep sections.

Dingzhou and Xinji Transportation

Dingzhou

Dingzhou East Railway Station handles high-speed services, while Dingzhou Railway Station is closer to the established urban area.

Dingzhou Ancient City’s main monuments can be explored on foot after reaching the center by taxi or bus.

Xinji

Xinji South Railway Station serves high-speed trains, while Xinji Railway Station serves conventional routes.

The city is mainly visited for commercial, industrial and regional cultural travel. Taxis and local buses are adequate for most urban journeys.

Tourist Direct Buses

Hebei continues to expand city-to-attraction bus services. By May 2026, the province had opened 19 tourist-direct-bus routes, including new coverage for destinations such as Yesanpo and cultural venues in Langfang.

Direct buses are useful, but they may:

• Operate only on weekends or holidays
• Require advance booking
• Leave from a suburban transport hub
• Include attraction tickets
• Have a fixed return time
• Stop operating in winter or during bad weather

Always confirm the schedule through the official tourism authority, transport operator or attraction account.

Self-Driving in Hebei

Why Self-Driving Works Well

Hebei’s dense expressway network makes driving particularly useful for:

• Great Wall routes
• Royal tomb complexes
• Taihang Mountain attractions
• Bashang grasslands

• Wetlands and rural parks

The province’s tourism-transport policy aimed to place all A-rated attractions within one hour of an expressway and to give 5A attractions access to an expressway within approximately 15 minutes.

Driving Documents for Foreign Visitors

A foreign driving licence or International Driving Permit alone is not sufficient for driving in Mainland China.

Short-term visitors holding an overseas driving licence may apply for a Chinese temporary driving permit. It is generally valid for three months; when the authorized stay exceeds three months, validity may be extended to a maximum of one year.

Applicants normally need:

Mountain Driving

Extra caution is needed in:

Expressway service-area charging coverage has improved substantially, but charging points are less predictable near small villages and remote homestays.

Before entering Bashang or the Taihang Mountains:

• Keep enough reserve range for detours
• Do not rely on a single scenic-area charging station

Recommended Hebei Self-Driving Routes

Beijing–Chengde Imperial and Great Wall Route

Beijing – Jinshanling Great Wall – Chengde – Mountain Resort – Outlying Temples

This is one of Hebei’s easiest cultural road trips and can be completed in three or four days.

Coastal Hebei Route

Beijing or Tianjin – Tangshan – Eastern Qing Tombs – Qinhuangdao – Shanhaiguan – Beidaihe – Aranya

Allow at least four or five days. Summer weekend traffic around Beidaihe and Aranya can be heavy.

Taihang Mountain Heritage Route

Baoding – Western Qing Tombs – Yishui Lake – Baishi Mountain – Shijiazhuang – Jingxing – Xingtai – Handan

This route is suitable for experienced drivers and should be divided into several overnight sections.

Bashang Grassland Route

Beijing – Zhangjiakou – Grassland Sky Road – Zhangbei – Chongli

A longer version can continue toward Chengde, Weichang, Saihanba and Yudaokou.

Southern Hebei Mountain Route

Shijiazhuang – Xingtai – Xingtai Grand Canyon – Handan – Guangfu – Wu’an – East Taihang

Private transport allows travelers to combine landscapes, ancient cities and regional food.

Scenic Driving Roads

Taihang Mountain Expressway

The Taihang Mountain Expressway forms an important north–south corridor through western Hebei and improves access to mountain tourism zones in Zhangjiakou, Baoding, Shijiazhuang, Xingtai and Handan.

An official provincial assessment noted that major tourist attractions along the Taihang corridor had achieved rapid expressway access.

Jingxing Taihang Sky Road

This 60.4-kilometre scenic route links traditional villages, rural tourism areas and mountain landscapes west of Shijiazhuang.

It is suitable for:

• Private cars
• Small motorcycle groups
• Supported cycling groups
• Village and photography tours

Road width varies, so large coaches should confirm access before entering village sections.

Beijing–Yuxian Expressway

The route improves access from Beijing toward Yesanpo, Xiaowutai Mountain, Yuxian and Nuanquan.

Winter weather can affect exposed sections. Check snow, fog and wind conditions before departure.

Wu’an and East Taihang

The roads around East Taihang, Jingniang Lake, Qibugou and western Wu’an are popular with driving and motorcycle groups.

The routes are scenic but include tunnels, sharp bends and changes in elevation. Weekends can bring heavy recreational traffic.

Grassland Sky Road

The Grassland Sky Road is highly scenic but should not be treated as an ordinary express route. Progress can be slow because of viewpoints, villages, livestock and congestion.

Hebei offers several types of cycling routes:

Cycling Safety

Ordinary bicycles and electric bicycles must not enter expressways, urban expressways or roads reserved exclusively for motor vehicles.

Hebei’s electric-bicycle regulations specifically prohibit electric bicycles from entering expressways, urban expressways and other motor-vehicle-only roads. Riders and passengers must wear helmets where required.

Cyclists should:

• Use bicycle lanes where available
• Ride on the right side of ordinary roads
• Wear visible clothing
• Use front and rear lights
• Avoid tunnels without bicycle access

Transporting Bicycles by Train

Do not assume that a fully assembled bicycle can be taken into a high-speed train carriage.

Motorcycle Touring in Hebei

Licensing Requirements

A foreign motorcycle licence or International Driving Permit does not by itself authorize motorcycle riding in Mainland China.

The rider must hold a valid Chinese licence or a temporary permit covering the correct vehicle category. Temporary permits issued for ordinary rental cars may be restricted to C1 or C2 car categories and may not authorize motorcycle rental.

Motorcycles on Expressways

However, individual expressways, toll entrances, tunnels or city jurisdictions can impose additional restrictions through signs and traffic-control orders. Riders should never assume that every Hebei expressway permits motorcycle entry.

When access is uncertain, use national and provincial roads instead.

Motorcycle-control zones can differ among Shijiazhuang, Tangshan, Qinhuangdao, Handan and other cities. Restrictions may apply to ring roads, central districts, tunnels or specific periods.

Check current traffic-police notices immediately before the journey. Navigation software does not always reflect temporary motorcycle restrictions.
