  • Tangshan Administrative Divisions

Tangshan (唐山市) is a prefecture-level city in eastern Hebei Province, bordering the Bohai Sea to the south and the Yanshan Mountains to the north. Historically shaped by coal mining, railways, steel, ceramics and heavy industry, Tangshan is also one of China’s best-known examples of post-industrial urban regeneration. Today its tourism identity combines industrial heritage, earthquake memory, Great Wall culture, Qing imperial heritage, coastal islands, wetlands, revolutionary history and traditional Jidong folk arts.

Administratively, Tangshan currently governs 14 county-level divisions: 7 municipal districts, 4 counties and 3 county-level cities. The municipal districts are Lunan, Lubei, Guye, Kaiping, Fengnan, Fengrun and Caofeidian; the counties are Luannan, Laoting, Qianxi and Yutian; and the county-level cities are Zunhua, Qian’an and Luanzhou. Current 2026 administrative data show 231 statutory township-level divisions, comprising 54 subdistricts, 159 towns and 18 townships, including 3 ethnic townships. This is an important update from some older tables that still show fewer towns because several former townships have since become towns or because units administered by development zones were listed separately.

Tangshan currently has two National 5A Tourist Attractions. Qing Eastern Tombs (清东陵) in Zunhua received 5A status earlier and forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage property Imperial Tombs of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Tangshan Nanhu–Kailuan Tourist Area (唐山南湖·开滦旅游景区) became a National 5A attraction in 2024, transforming a former coal-mining subsidence landscape and century-old mining heritage into one of the city’s flagship tourism areas.

    Tourism Geography Across Tangshan

Central Tangshan: Industrial Heritage, Earthquake Memory and Urban Culture

Lunan District (路南区) contains much of Tangshan’s best-known contemporary urban tourism. The Nanhu–Kailuan Tourist Area combines Nanhu’s restored lakes and park landscapes with Kailuan National Mine Park, allowing visitors to understand Tangshan’s transformation from coal-mining city to ecological city. The surrounding tourism cluster also includes Tangshan Banquet, where local food is combined with Pingju Opera, shadow puppetry and other Jidong cultural traditions. Provincial tourism authorities describe the 5A complex as an integrated destination for scenery, food, performances and industrial heritage.

Lubei District (路北区) is Tangshan’s main political, commercial and cultural center. Major urban resources include Tangshan Museum, the Tangshan Earthquake Memorial area, city cultural facilities and Qixin 1889 Cultural and Creative Industrial Park. Qixin 1889 occupies former cement-industry heritage and is part of Tangshan’s wider effort to turn industrial remains into cultural and visitor spaces; the city tourism authority continued to promote Qixin 1889 together with Nanhu–Kailuan as representative industrial-heritage destinations in 2025.

Guye District (古冶区) and Kaiping District (开平区) extend this industrial story eastward through historic mining communities, former industrial landscapes and newer ecological-restoration projects. Tangshan’s tourism development increasingly uses former coal-mining and industrial land for parks, cultural venues and study-tour experiences, making these districts more relevant for industrial-history and urban-regeneration tourism than for conventional scenic sightseeing.

Fengnan and Fengrun: Canal Night Tourism, Folk Culture and Red Heritage

Fengnan District (丰南区) has emerged as one of Tangshan’s most popular night-tourism areas because of Hetou Old Street (河头老街). Developed along the Tangjin Canal corridor, the attraction combines Tang-style architectural imagery with Tangshan food, folk performances, intangible cultural heritage, markets and immersive entertainment. It has become a major tourism-consumption destination and continued to receive very large visitor flows during the 2026 Spring Festival period.

Fengrun District (丰润区) combines Jidong folk culture, countryside resources and revolutionary history. Fengrun shadow puppetry is part of Tangshan’s important traditional performing-arts heritage, while Panjiayu preserves one of the major Anti-Japanese War memorial sites in eastern Hebei. Local food and handicraft traditions, including Qizi-style baked cakes and other regional crafts, add to the district’s cultural-tourism potential.

Zunhua, Qianxi and Qian’an: Great Wall and Yanshan Mountain Tourism

Northern Tangshan is the city’s strongest Great Wall–mountain–imperial heritage belt. Zunhua City (遵化市) contains Qing Eastern Tombs, one of China’s most important surviving Qing imperial mausoleum complexes. The wider area also combines Manchu cultural traditions, Yanshan scenery, ancient hot springs and sections of the Great Wall, making Zunhua one of Tangshan’s most important international cultural-tourism destinations.

Qianxi County (迁西县) is especially associated with Qingshanguan Great Wall (青山关长城), Xifengkou (喜峰口) and the Panjiakou reservoir region. Qingshanguan represents one of the more rugged Great Wall landscapes in Hebei, while Xifengkou carries strong associations with Great Wall resistance during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. Chestnut orchards, mountain villages and reservoirs give Qianxi an additional rural-tourism dimension.

Qian’an City (迁安市) also forms part of Tangshan’s Great Wall tourism network, with Baiyangyu Great Wall (白羊峪长城) among its representative historical landscapes. Qian’an additionally combines mountain recreation, ecological restoration and modern industrial development, making it suitable for Great Wall, outdoor and industrial study tours. Provincial winter tourism routes explicitly link Qing Eastern Tombs, Baiyangyu and Qingshanguan into one Tangshan heritage itinerary.

Laoting, Caofeidian and the Bohai Coast

Laoting County (乐亭县) is the birthplace of Li Dazhao, one of the founders of the Communist Party of China. The Li Dazhao Memorial Hall and Former Residence form one of Tangshan’s principal revolutionary-heritage destinations, and the memorial museum is now classified as a National First-Class Museum.

Laoting is also closely associated with Tangshan International Tourism Island, including Bodhi Island, Yuetuo Island and Xiangyun Island. These offshore and coastal landscapes combine beaches, wetlands, hot-spring resources and seafood culture, providing a very different experience from northern Tangshan’s Great Wall and mountain tourism.

Caofeidian District (曹妃甸区) is dominated by the Bohai coastline, large wetlands, fisheries, modern port development and reclamation history. Its tourism resources include wetland birdwatching, coastal recreation, agricultural and fishing experiences, as well as industrial and port-oriented study tourism. Provincial tourism itineraries increasingly combine the Caofeidian City Exhibition Hall and Shougang Jingtang industrial facilities with Tangshan’s heritage attractions.

Luannan County (滦南县) has a stronger rural and folk-cultural tourism character. It is closely connected with the development of Pingju Opera and Jidong performing arts, while modern cultural events also feature Laoting Dagu, one of Tangshan’s famous traditional narrative-singing forms.

Luanzhou and Yutian: Ancient Town Culture and Eastern Plain Heritage

Luanzhou City (滦州市) is best known for Luanzhou Ancient City (滦州古城), while Qinglong Mountain and local Pingju traditions strengthen its combination of historical-town, folk-art and mountain tourism. Tangshan tourism programs have repeatedly included Qinglong Mountain and Luanzhou’s traditional performance culture among regional visitor activities.

Yutian County (玉田县) lies closer to the Beijing–Tianjin side of Tangshan and is characterized by agricultural landscapes, traditional villages, historic temples and local craft traditions. Its visitor appeal is generally stronger for rural tourism, folk culture, food and regional heritage than for large-scale scenic attractions.

Complete Administrative Division Table of Tangshan

The following table uses the current 2026 structure rather than older statistical lists. Several details in earlier versions need updating: Lubei now includes the High-tech Development Zone Subdistrict; Fengnan includes 3 subdistricts and 16 towns; Fengrun includes Laozhuangzi Town; Caofeidian has 3 subdistricts and 5 towns; Laoting has 12 towns and 2 townships; Qianxi has 14 towns; and Luanzhou’s formal name is Luancheng Road Subdistrict (滦城路街道).

The totals in this table are 54 subdistricts + 159 towns + 18 townships = 231 township-level administrative divisions. The 18 township figure includes 15 ordinary townships and 3 Manchu ethnic townships, all three ethnic townships being located in Zunhua.

Development Zones and Special Management Areas

Tangshan also has several important development zones and functional management areas, but these should not be confused with additional county-level cities or districts. Current township-level statistics generally retain their statutory units under the relevant county or district even when another development-zone authority performs daily management. For example, High-tech Development Zone Subdistrict is counted under Lubei, while Laozhuangzi Town is formally part of Fengrun; Xinhua Road Subdistrict and Haibei Town are associated with the Lutai development area; Zhenxing Subdistrict and Hanfeng Town are associated with Hangu management; and Wangtan Town is geographically and legally part of Laoting while closely connected with the Tangshan Harbor Economic Development Zone.

Tangshan International Tourism Island (唐山国际旅游岛) is likewise a tourism and functional management area rather than an additional county-level administrative division. Its best-known resources—Bodhi Island, Yuetuo Island and Xiangyun Island—belong to Tangshan’s Laoting–Bohai coastal tourism system.
