Shijiazhuang, the capital of Hebei Province, is often underestimated as a travel destination. Beyond its modern provincial-capital image, the wider municipality brings together four very different tourism themes: revolutionary history at Xibaipo, ancient architecture in Zhengding, engineering heritage represented by Zhaozhou Bridge, and the mountain landscapes of the Taihang range.
An important update to the figures in the earlier material: the official Shijiazhuang A-rated Tourist Attraction Directory published on January 19, 2026 contains 42 attractions, rather than the older total of 35. Xibaipo remains the city's only National 5A Tourist Attraction, while major 4A sites include Longxing Temple, Zhaozhou Bridge, Cangyan Mountain, Zhangshiyan, Baodu Village, Tuoliang and many others.
For first-time international visitors, however, the value of Shijiazhuang is not simply the number of rated attractions. Its strongest experiences are concentrated around Xibaipo, Zhengding Ancient City, Zhaozhou Bridge, Hebei Museum and the western Taihang Mountains. Zhengding Ancient City is currently being developed toward National 5A status, while Zhangshiyan and Cangyan Mountain are also being promoted for future 5A development.
Why Visit Shijiazhuang?
Shijiazhuang is particularly suitable for travelers interested in Chinese history, ancient architecture, revolutionary heritage, archaeology, mountain hiking and lesser-known destinations outside China's most crowded tourism circuits. Within one municipal area, visitors can move from Han Dynasty treasures in a provincial museum to Song-era architecture in Zhengding, cross a 1,400-year-old stone bridge, explore revolutionary sites at Xibaipo, and hike dramatic Taihang Mountain landscapes.
The city's tourism geography is relatively easy to understand: central Shijiazhuang is best for museums and urban culture; Zhengding County concentrates ancient temples and historic architecture; Pingshan County combines Xibaipo with mountain and hot-spring tourism; Jingxing and Zanhuang are major Taihang Mountain destinations; while Zhao County is centered on the cultural legacy of Zhaozhou Bridge.

The current municipal A-rated attraction directory confirms Xibaipo as 5A and the principal sites above—including Longxing Temple, Rongguo Mansion, Zhaozhou Bridge, Cangyan Mountain, Zhangshiyan, Tuoliang, Tiangui Mountain, Baodu Village and Manshan Huaxi Valley—as 4A attractions.
Xibaipo Scenic Area
Xibaipo Scenic Area (西柏坡景区) in Pingshan County is Shijiazhuang's most important revolutionary tourism destination and its only National 5A Tourist Attraction. The complex includes the former site of the CPC Central Committee and the Xibaipo Memorial Museum, preserving the historical setting associated with the final phase of the Chinese Civil War before the establishment of the People's Republic of China. The municipal tourism authority continues to list Xibaipo at the head of its official red-tourism attractions.
Xibaipo works particularly well for history, political-history and educational tours. The surrounding Pingshan countryside has also developed a broader red-tourism network that includes Beizhuang Village, where the song Unity Is Strength originated, as well as several former revolutionary institutional sites.
Zhengding Ancient City
Zhengding Ancient City (正定古城) is arguably the strongest destination in Shijiazhuang for international travelers interested in traditional Chinese architecture. Rather than being a single ticketed attraction, it is a historic urban area containing ancient city walls, temples, pagodas, traditional streets and cultural attractions.
Its best-known landmarks include Longxing Temple, Kaiyuan Temple, Tianning Temple, Guanghui Temple, Linji Temple and Rongguo Mansion. The city has become one of Shijiazhuang's flagship cultural destinations, and Zhengding Ancient City has entered the national process for creation of a 5A Tourist Attraction, although it should not yet be described as an officially designated 5A scenic area.
For a first visit, allow at least half a day; architecture enthusiasts can easily spend a full day here.
Longxing Temple
Longxing Temple (隆兴寺) is the architectural centerpiece of Zhengding and a National 4A Tourist Attraction. The temple preserves an exceptional collection of historic Buddhist architecture and sculpture, with the Mani Hall (摩尼殿) and its celebrated seated Guanyin image among the most admired works. Current Shijiazhuang tourism material continues to identify these as major artistic treasures of the ancient city.
For visitors interested in Chinese wooden architecture, Buddhist sculpture or architectural history, Longxing Temple deserves considerably more time than a quick photograph stop.
Zhaozhou Bridge
Zhaozhou Bridge (赵州桥) in Zhao County is one of Shijiazhuang's most internationally significant historical monuments. Designed by the craftsman Li Chun during the Sui Dynasty, it has survived for more than 1,400 years and is famous for its pioneering open-spandrel stone arch construction. Shijiazhuang authorities describe it as the world's oldest surviving and best-preserved bridge of its type and note its recognition as an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.
The scenic area has been free to the public since November 1, 2023, a policy that significantly increased visitation. Current reservation or crowd-management requirements should still be checked before major holidays.
Hebei Museum
Hebei Museum (河北博物院) is the essential urban attraction for understanding the archaeology and history of Hebei. Its major collections include treasures from the Zhongshan State and the Han Dynasty tombs at Mancheng, including the celebrated Changxin Palace Lamp (长信宫灯) and jade burial suits sewn with gold wire (金缕玉衣).
The museum is particularly useful before visiting Zhengding, Zhao County or other historic destinations because it provides a broader chronological introduction to the cultures that shaped central Hebei.
Cangyan Mountain
Cangyan Mountain (苍岩山) in Jingxing County combines dramatic Taihang scenery with traditional architecture. Its most recognizable structure is Qiaolou Hall (桥楼殿), dramatically positioned above a narrow gorge and forming one of the classic architectural images of the Shijiazhuang mountain region.
The attraction is currently a National 4A Tourist Attraction, and Shijiazhuang has identified it as one of the scenic areas targeted for future 5A development.
Cangyan Mountain is best treated as a full-day excursion from central Shijiazhuang rather than combined with several distant attractions.
Zhangshiyan Scenic Area
Zhangshiyan Scenic Area (嶂石岩景区) in Zanhuang County is one of the most important geological landscapes in the Taihang Mountains. It is the naming site of the Zhangshiyan landform, which Chinese tourism and geological literature commonly groups with Danxia and Zhangjiajie as three distinctive sandstone landscape types. The scenic area is a National 4A attraction, national scenic area and national geological park.
One of its most unusual features is an enormous curved natural echo wall. Municipal tourism information describes the approximately 103-meter-high, 250-degree Echo Valley formation as the world's largest natural echo wall and notes its inclusion in the Guinness records in 1997.
Taihang Mountain Attractions
The western part of Shijiazhuang contains a broad group of mountain destinations rather than one single scenic area. Tuoliang, Tiangui Mountain, Wuyuezhai, Heishan Grand Canyon, Huhuishui, Tenglong Mountain and Manshan Huaxi Valley are among the best-known choices.
Tuoliang and Wuyuezhai are particularly popular in summer because of forests, waterfalls and cooler mountain temperatures, while Huhuishui is known for streams and waterfalls in warmer months and ice landscapes in winter. Recent municipal tourism promotion continues to feature these western mountain attractions as a major ecological and outdoor-tourism cluster.

These are useful additions for repeat visitors, rural tourism or specialized trips but are generally secondary to the destinations listed above for a first Shijiazhuang tour.
Best Attractions by Travel Interest
For ancient architecture and history, prioritize Zhengding Ancient City, Longxing Temple, Zhaozhou Bridge, Pilu Temple and Hebei Museum. Zhengding is particularly valuable because several major monuments can be explored within one compact historic area.
For revolutionary and educational tourism, Xibaipo is the clear first choice, with additional historical villages and former revolutionary sites across Pingshan County.
For mountains and outdoor scenery, choose Cangyan Mountain for the combination of architecture and cliffs, Zhangshiyan for geology, Tuoliang or Wuyuezhai for summer hiking, and Huhuishui for waterfalls and seasonal ice landscapes.
For families and leisure travel, Manshan Huaxi Valley, Baodu Village, Tianshan Sea World, Guoyu Hot Spring Resort Town and the cultural tourism towns around Luquan provide easier recreational experiences than the more demanding mountain routes.
