  • Shijiazhuang Administrative Divisions

Shijiazhuang (石家庄市) is the capital of Hebei Province and one of the principal transportation, economic and cultural centers of North China. The municipality covers about 15,800 square kilometers and currently comprises 8 urban districts, 11 counties and 3 county-level cities, forming 22 county-level administrative units. The latest municipal profile also lists national-level development platforms such as the Shijiazhuang High-Tech Industrial Development Zone, Shijiazhuang Economic and Technological Development Zone and Shijiazhuang Comprehensive Bonded Zone, but these functional management zones are not separate county-level administrative divisions.

For tourism, Shijiazhuang is much more diverse than its modern provincial-capital image suggests. Its current destination strategy revolves around the Taihang Mountains, the Hutuo River, Xibaipo, Zhengding Ancient City and Zhaozhou Bridge, combining revolutionary history, ancient architecture, mountain landscapes, archaeological heritage, museums, rural tourism and contemporary urban experiences. In 2026, the city is continuing to develop Zhengding and other major cultural resources as part of its ambition to strengthen Shijiazhuang as an international tourism destination.

    Administrative Structure of Shijiazhuang

For a complete administrative listing, Shijiazhuang can be understood at two levels:

    Administrative Level Current Structure
    Municipal Districts 8
    Counties 11
    County-level Cities 3
    Total County-level Units 22
    Subdistricts 60
    Towns 140
    Ordinary Townships 73
    Ethnic Townships 3
    Total Township-level Units 276

The 276 township-level units above include Xinji City (辛集市). Current administrative reference material continues to list Xinji among Shijiazhuang's 22 county-level divisions while noting that Xinji is a provincial direct-administration pilot city. If Xinji is excluded from municipal management statistics, Shijiazhuang's official 2025 profile records 132 towns, 66 ordinary townships, three ethnic townships and 60 subdistricts.

    Tourism Geography of Shijiazhuang

Shijiazhuang's tourism resources are distributed very unevenly across the municipality. For travelers, understanding these geographical differences is more useful than simply looking at administrative boundaries.

    Central Urban Districts

Chang'an, Qiaoxi, Xinhua and Yuhua districts form the modern urban core. Chang'an is especially important for museum tourism, with the Hebei Museum providing the best introduction to the history and archaeology of Hebei. Qiaoxi represents the historical development of modern Shijiazhuang as a railway city, while the central districts also contain industrial heritage, contemporary cultural venues, commercial streets, parks and nightlife.

These areas are best treated as an urban cultural-tourism zone rather than as separate sightseeing destinations.

Zhengding and the Northern Heritage Zone

Zhengding County is the most important historical destination close to downtown Shijiazhuang. The ancient city preserves a remarkable concentration of historic architecture centered on Longxing Temple, ancient pagodas, city walls and traditional streets, together with Rongguo Mansion and Three Kingdoms-related cultural experiences.

Zhengding remains one of Shijiazhuang's strongest tourism-growth areas. During 2026, the county has continued to expand cultural performances, heritage interpretation, night tourism and immersive activities around Longxing Temple, Rongguo Mansion and the ancient city. It is also currently advancing the creation of a National 5A tourist attraction based on the wider Zhengding Ancient City area.

Nearby Xinle City is better known for Fuxi cultural traditions, while northern counties such as Xingtang and Lingshou transition from the plains into the foothills of the Taihang Mountains. Lingshou in particular is associated with mountain and summer-escape tourism.

Pingshan and the Northwestern Taihang Mountains

Pingshan County is one of the most tourism-rich counties in the municipality. Its defining attraction is Xibaipo, an important destination for modern Chinese revolutionary history. The county also contains mountain, forest, hot-spring and summer-escape resources, including the high Taihang landscapes around Tuoliang.

Together with neighboring Lingshou, Pingshan forms an important northern mountain-tourism belt, suitable for hiking, ecological tourism, rural stays and summer travel.

Jingxing and the Western Taihang Cultural Corridor

Jingxing County is one of the most culturally distinctive mountain counties around Shijiazhuang. It lies on one of the historic Eight Passes of the Taihang Mountains and combines ancient transport history, traditional villages and mountain landscapes.

Cangyan Mountain is particularly famous for the Bridge-Tower Hall built dramatically between cliffs, while the Qinhuang Ancient Road preserves memories of ancient transportation through the Taihang Mountains. Tianchang Ancient Town and traditional Jingxing Lahua folk culture add important heritage elements.

Official tourism promotion in 2025 specifically highlighted Jingxing, Zanhuang and Yuanshi as important parts of the Shijiazhuang section of the Taihang Mountain cultural-tourism belt.

The neighboring Jingxing Mining District has a different character, combining mining and industrial heritage with mountain-town history.

    Zanhuang and Yuanshi

Zanhuang County is dominated by the central Taihang Mountains and is best known for Zhangshiyan, whose distinctive red sandstone cliffs gave their name to the Zhangshiyan landform. Forests, valleys, traditional villages and rural accommodation are increasingly supporting slower mountain tourism.

To the north, Yuanshi County combines the eastern Taihang foothills with lake and mountain recreation. Current tourism development around Panlong Lake emphasizes water sports, camping and family leisure, showing how western Shijiazhuang is expanding beyond traditional scenic sightseeing.

    Zhao County and Southeastern Shijiazhuang

Zhao County is one of the strongest historical-cultural destinations on the plains. Its tourism identity is dominated by Zhaozhou Bridge, the celebrated ancient open-spandrel stone arch bridge, together with Buddhist and Zen heritage associated with the wider Zhaozhou cultural tradition.

Zhaozhou Bridge, Zhengding and Xibaipo have been identified by Shijiazhuang as three of the city's most important tourism brands.

Gaocheng, Luancheng, Gaoyi, Shenze and Wuji have fewer nationally famous scenic areas but contribute archaeological heritage, folk culture, agriculture, traditional villages, industrial tourism and countryside leisure to the municipality's wider tourism system.

Luquan and the Western Urban Fringe

Luquan District forms the transition between metropolitan Shijiazhuang and the Taihang foothills. Its tourism resources include mountain recreation, cultural tourism, family leisure and large-scale urban-edge attractions. The area is particularly useful for short trips from downtown because it combines suburban accessibility with a more mountainous environment.

    Eastern County-Level Cities

Jinzhou, Xinji and the eastern agricultural plain have a different tourism character. Jinzhou is associated with orchards, countryside tourism and traditional village life, while Xinji is particularly well known for its leather industry and commercial culture. These areas are more suitable for rural, industrial, agricultural and specialized study tours than conventional scenic sightseeing.

Overall, Shijiazhuang's tourism structure can be summarized as:

Central City Culture – Zhengding Ancient City – Xibaipo – Western Taihang Mountains – Zhaozhou Bridge – Rural and Industrial Tourism

This pattern corresponds closely with the city's current tourism strategy of integrating “one mountain, one river” with Xibaipo, Zhengding and Zhaozhou Bridge as major destination brands.

The following table lists all 22 county-level administrative units and their township-level divisions according to the current 2026 administrative structure. Development zones are not listed separately because they are functional management areas rather than independent county-level divisions.

Important Notes on Development Zones and Administrative Boundaries

Travelers and website editors may sometimes encounter names such as Shijiazhuang High-Tech Industrial Development Zone, Shijiazhuang Economic and Technological Development Zone, Zhengding New Area or the Circular Chemical Industry Park in addresses. These are important development and management zones but should not automatically be added as extra county-level administrative divisions.

Some statutory townships and subdistricts are managed operationally by these development zones, which is why the administrative affiliation shown on maps, business addresses and local government websites can occasionally appear different from the formal county-level structure. For a standard geographical or tourism article, the 8 districts + 11 counties + 3 county-level cities framework is the clearest structure to use.
