Tunchang Attractions

Tunchang County (屯昌县) lies in the hilly interior of central Hainan and offers a very different travel experience from the island’s famous coastal resorts. Rather than beaches and luxury seaside hotels, Tunchang is characterized by aromatic gardens, inland lakes, forested hills, rural villages, martial-arts traditions, farmer oil painting, wellness experiences and agricultural tourism.

The county’s best-established attraction is Dream Xiangshan Scenic Area (梦幻香山旅游区), currently a National 4A Tourist Attraction and Tunchang’s flagship scenic area. Its tourism model combines aromatic plants, modern agriculture, wellness, education and rural leisure.

Tunchang is also notable for its rural-tourism network. Official and media sources have reported different totals of “Coconut-Rated Rural Tourism Sites” (椰级乡村旅游点) in different assessment years because sites are periodically reassessed or upgraded. One important recent change is Vandi Farm (凡迪农场) in Guanlang Village, which was newly rated a Five-Coconut Rural Tourism Site in 2025, the highest level in Hainan’s rural-tourism classification system.

The ranking below is a recommended visitor ranking rather than an official government ranking, based on distinctiveness, tourism maturity, cultural value and suitability for first-time visitors.

Dream Xiangshan Scenic Area

Dream Xiangshan Scenic Area (梦幻香山旅游区) is the most developed tourist attraction in Tunchang and the county’s only clearly confirmed National 4A scenic area.

The park covers more than 600 mu and is built around the concept of “fragrance culture.” Aromatic flowers, herbs, fruit trees and fragrant tree species are integrated with agricultural demonstration, family recreation, wellness, food experiences and environmental education. The park’s own visitor information highlights attractions such as flower fields, aromatic gardens, lemon picking, a crystal-style chapel, children’s facilities and cultural spaces.

Unlike a conventional botanical garden, Dream Xiangshan is intended as a full rural leisure destination. Visitors can combine flower viewing with aromatic-product experiences, food, family activities and wellness programs.

It is particularly suitable for families, couples, wellness travellers, photography and agricultural study tours.

Muse Lake

Muse Lake (木色湖), also commonly rendered as Muxi Lake, is one of Tunchang’s strongest natural landscapes.

Located southwest of the county town around Fengmu Town (枫木镇), the broader lake area covers roughly 28 square kilometres and includes Muse Lake and neighbouring Leigongtan Lake. The reservoir is surrounded by low hills, grassland and wetlands, with waterbirds frequently visible around the shore.

A colourful lakeside embankment has become a popular self-driving and photography spot. Tunchang’s official tourism promotions regularly combine Muse Lake with Meiheyuan Village and Dream Xiangshan as part of wellness and countryside itineraries.

Muse Lake is not currently best described as a nationally A-rated attraction. Its importance comes instead from its landscape, road-trip atmosphere, birdlife and rural leisure potential.

Pochen Wushu Village

Pochen Wushu Village (坡陈武术村) is one of Tunchang’s most distinctive cultural destinations.

The village is famous for Wuxing Zhuang (五形桩, Five-Form Stake Boxing), a local martial-art tradition developed during the Qing Dynasty. Its movements imitate the forms of the dragon, tiger, monkey, turtle and crane, combining southern Chinese martial-arts techniques with local traditions. The practice has been transmitted in Pochen for more than 160 years.

Today, the village has martial-arts training and demonstration spaces, and traditional wushu is increasingly integrated into cultural tourism and youth education.

For foreign visitors, Pochen provides a much more locally rooted cultural experience than a conventional staged martial-arts show.

Xianliu Oil Painting Village

Xianliu Village (咸六村) is regarded as the birthplace of Tunchang farmer oil painting and one of the county’s most unusual cultural attractions.

Since the 1980s, local farmers have developed an active oil-painting tradition, producing artists who later worked throughout Hainan and southern China. Today, the village is developing a combination of painting studios, teaching, exhibitions, rural tourism, accommodation and artist residencies.

Its importance increased further in 2026, when Xianliu was selected as a demonstration village under the FAO Villages Recognition Initiative, making it the only village from Hainan included in that selection.

Xianliu is particularly suitable for art tours, student study programs, painting workshops and rural-cultural travel.

Meiheyuan Village

Meiheyuan Village (美鹤园村) in Nankun Town is known for its extensive bamboo landscapes.

Tourism routes promoted by Tunchang describe the village as a peaceful countryside destination surrounded by large areas of bamboo forest, making it suitable for slow walking, rural photography and wellness-oriented travel.

Older rural-tourism classifications listed Meiheyuan as a Three-Coconut Rural Tourism Site. Since Hainan periodically reassesses these ratings, the safest current description is as an established coconut-rated rural tourism destination unless the latest rating certificate is required.

Vandi Farm and Guanlang Village

Vandi Farm (凡迪农场) in Guanlang Village (关朗村), Poxin Town, represents the newer generation of Tunchang rural tourism.

In July 2025, it was officially rated a Five-Coconut Rural Tourism Site, the highest category in Hainan’s rural-tourism grading system.

The farm combines agriculture, family activities, local food and seasonal cultural events. During the 2025 Dragon Boat Festival period, for example, Tunchang included the farm in county tourism programming featuring local black-pork zongzi making, family water activities and rural experiences.

Older tourism materials listed Zhuhaha Rural Tourism Site (猪哈哈乡村旅游点) in the same Guanlang Village area as a Four-Coconut destination, so older and newer names and ratings should not automatically be treated as separate attractions without checking the operator and current registration.

Qingti Village

Qingti Village (青梯村) represents the quieter ecological side of Tunchang tourism.

The village is surrounded by farmland, waterways and tropical vegetation and is often combined with Muse Lake in local self-drive programs. A 2024 county tourism itinerary specifically recommended a Qingti Village – Muse Lake combination for visitors interested in green countryside scenery.

It is best suited to travellers who prefer slow rural travel, photography and local village landscapes rather than formal scenic-area facilities.

Shixia Village and Hai Rui Heritage

Shixia Village (石峡村) is promoted as part of the Hai Rui (海瑞) cultural landscape.

Hai Rui was one of the most famous upright officials of the Ming Dynasty and remains an important historical figure in Hainan culture. Tunchang tourism routes combine Shixia with Pochen Wushu Village and the military-themed park, creating a cultural circuit around traditional village life, local history and martial arts.

This is better treated as a cultural village experience than as a formal scenic area.

Xuanfenghu Military Theme Park

Xuanfenghu Military Theme Park (旋风虎军事主题园) is aimed primarily at families, young travellers and school groups.

The park provides outdoor military-style activities such as team challenges, simulated combat games and survival-oriented recreation. Tunchang continues to include it in official county tourism routes; in 2025 it was used for parent-child team activities during the Dragon Boat Festival tourism program.

It is most suitable as a complementary activity rather than a destination that requires an entire day.

Wolong Mountain

Wolong Mountain (卧龙山) is one of Tunchang’s better-known natural hill landscapes.

The mountain is associated locally with unusual rock formations, forest scenery and light outdoor exploration. Older county tourism routes have long included Wolong Mountain among Tunchang’s principal natural resources, alongside Muse Lake and other central-Hainan hill landscapes.

The site is relatively undeveloped compared with Dream Xiangshan. Visitors should therefore check access and weather conditions rather than expecting extensive scenic-area infrastructure.

Tunchang Oil Painting Street

Tunchang Oil Painting Street (屯昌油画步行街) provides a more accessible urban introduction to the county’s painting tradition.

While Xianliu Village represents the rural birthplace of the movement, the painting street has traditionally concentrated studios, finished works and local artists in the county town. Tunchang tourism itineraries continue to include the street as an art stop.

It can easily be combined with Dream Xiangshan when staying in central Tunchang.

Red Heritage in Tunchang

Tunchang also preserves important sites associated with Hainan’s twentieth-century revolutionary history.

Nantian Village (南田村) is connected with the Nantian Uprising of 1927, an event associated with Feng Ping and the development of the Qiongya revolutionary movement. Local rural-development programs increasingly combine this history with village tourism.

For travellers interested in modern Chinese history, Tunchang’s red-heritage sites can be linked with neighbouring revolutionary areas in central Hainan.

About Tunchang’s Coconut-Rated Rural Tourism Sites

The “Coconut Rating” (椰级) is Hainan’s dedicated grading system for rural tourism destinations and is separate from China’s national A-level scenic-area system.

Older county information reported six or seven coconut-rated tourism sites depending on the review period, including places such as Guanlang, Meiheyuan, Nantian, Pochen, Meihua and Nanxi.

The system is dynamic. In 2025, Vandi Farm in Guanlang Village was newly rated Five-Coconut, so older lists should not simply be copied as the current classification without checking the latest review.

For an international tourism website, the clearest approach is therefore to label Dream Xiangshan as the county’s confirmed National 4A attraction and list individual rural sites with their latest verified Coconut Rating where available.
