Tunchang County (屯昌县) is located in the north-central interior of Hainan Province, at the transition between the northern plains and the central mountainous region of Hainan Island. It borders Ding’an County and Qionghai City to the east, Qiongzhong Li and Miao Autonomous County to the south, and Chengmai County to the northwest. Covering approximately 1,224 square kilometres, Tunchang is characterised by low hills, reservoirs, rivers, tropical agriculture and forested countryside rather than the beaches and large coastal resorts usually associated with Hainan. Hainan’s official statistical yearbook continues to record Tunchang as having eight towns.
Administratively, Tunchang is a county directly administered by Hainan Province and has no subordinate districts or county-level cities. Its eight statutory township-level divisions are Tuncheng, Xinxing, Fengmu, Wupo, Nanlü, Nankun, Poxin and Xichang. Tuncheng Town is the county government seat. Recent 2026 local reporting still refers to the county’s eight town-level discipline commissions and 119 village/community-level supervisory committees, supporting the continued use of the traditional 119 village/community administrative framework.
Unlike Hainan’s major coastal destinations, Tunchang’s tourism identity is built around rural tourism, oil painting, aromatic agriculture, crystal-mining heritage, traditional martial arts, revolutionary history, reservoirs and minority villages. This makes it particularly suitable for inland road trips, study tours and travellers looking for a quieter side of Hainan.

Tunchang’s tourism resources are distributed among all eight towns, although Tuncheng, Xinxing, Fengmu, Nankun and Xichang currently have the strongest identifiable cultural or scenic tourism products.
Tuncheng Town: County Centre, Aromatic Tourism and Industrial Heritage
Tuncheng Town (屯城镇) is the administrative, commercial, cultural and transport centre of Tunchang and contains the county’s greatest concentration of established visitor attractions.
Its flagship destination is Dream Fragrant Hill Tourism Area (梦幻香山旅游区 / 梦幻香山芳香文化园) in Jialipo Village. The attraction combines aromatic plants, tropical agriculture, flower gardens, cultural experiences, agricultural products and wellness-oriented rural tourism. It became Tunchang’s first national 4A tourist attraction and remains the county’s highest-profile formally rated scenic area.
Tuncheng is also the centre of Tunchang oil-painting culture. Tunchang is widely known as Hainan’s “Home of Oil Painting,” and the Tunchang Oil Painting Pedestrian Street (屯昌油画步行街) developed as a concentration of galleries, studios and artists. Xinhua has highlighted oil painting as one of the county’s distinctive cultural industries and tourism brands.
Another major resource is the Site of the No. 701 Mine (七零一矿遗址), also known as the Yangjiaoling Crystal Mine. Located in Tuncheng Town, the mine contains important twentieth-century industrial and wartime heritage associated with one of Hainan’s major crystal deposits. By 2025 it had become a provincial-level protected cultural heritage site, and Tunchang began planning its transformation into a cultural-tourism project combining a crystal and mineral museum, industrial history, geological science and outdoor experiences.
A new urban attraction is the Jinzhuyuan Creative District (金竹园创意街区). Developed from an old agricultural-machinery factory and market area, it officially opened in February 2026 and now combines local food, agricultural products, creative retail, entertainment and cultural activities. The county is positioning it as a new integrated cultural-tourism consumption landmark.
Xinxing Town: Traditional Martial Arts and Historic Villages
Xinxing Town (新兴镇) has one of Tunchang’s strongest intangible-cultural-heritage identities.
The town contains Pochen Village (坡陈村), the birthplace of Pochen Five-Animal Stance Boxing (坡陈五形桩). The martial-art tradition dates back more than 160 years and was included in Hainan’s provincial intangible cultural heritage list in 2023. In 2026, Pochen Village continued to be promoted as part of Tunchang’s national “Home of Martial Arts” identity, with local residents, schools and martial-arts instructors actively maintaining the tradition.
This is an important correction to some tourism summaries: Pochen Village belongs to Xinxing Town, not Poxin Town.
Xinxing also contains several historic-cultural resources, including the Hai Rui family burial site (海瑞家族墓地), Fuqing Temple (福庆寺) and the former residence of local historical figures. These sites are less developed for mass tourism but provide material for village-history and cultural study tours.
Fengmu Town: Muse Lake and Mountain-Water Landscapes
Fengmu Town (枫木镇) is one of the most attractive areas of Tunchang for natural scenery.
Its principal landscape is Muse Lake (木色湖), a large reservoir surrounded by green hills near the Hainan Central Expressway. The lake covers a broad mountainous basin and is known for its quiet water, birdlife and forest scenery. Nearby Leigongtan Lake (雷公滩湖) lies at a different elevation, creating a waterfall landscape between the two water bodies.
Fengmu therefore has strong potential for reservoir recreation, birdwatching, photography, rural tourism and wellness retreats. It is also known for local food traditions, including Fengmu pickled rice noodles, which were included among Tunchang’s county-level intangible cultural heritage projects in 2024.
Because Muse Lake is primarily a natural and water-conservancy landscape rather than a heavily commercialised resort, travellers should confirm current access to specific lakeside facilities before visiting.
Wupo Town: Rural Culture and Archaeological Heritage
Wupo Town (乌坡镇) is primarily an agricultural town but has growing value for rural and cultural tourism.
The Qingti Neolithic Site (青梯新石器遗址) provides evidence of early human settlement in the area and forms part of Tunchang’s protected archaeological resources. Wupo also participates actively in local ethnic and folk-cultural events. During the 2025 Sanyuesan Festival, for example, Yashipu Village hosted traditional costume shows, bamboo-pole dancing, embroidery, archery and other folk activities.
Tourism in Wupo is therefore better understood through village experiences, agricultural landscapes, archaeology and folk activities than through a single major scenic attraction.
Nanlü Town: Revolutionary Heritage and Rural Landscapes
Nanlü Town (南吕镇) contains important twentieth-century heritage associated with the revolutionary history of Hainan.
The Dongling Arsenal Site (东岭武库), located southeast of Dongling Village, is recognised as a provincial-level protected cultural heritage site and reflects the military and revolutionary history of the island during the twentieth century.
The surrounding area consists largely of tropical agricultural villages, rivers and hilly landscapes. For tourism development, Nanlü is most suitable for red-history education, rural tourism and agricultural experiences, rather than conventional large-scale sightseeing.
Nankun Town: Li and Miao Cultural Experiences
Nankun Town (南坤镇) occupies a large hilly area in southwestern Tunchang and has the county’s strongest concentration of Li and Miao ethnic cultural resources.
Minority communities are concentrated in villages in and around Nankun, and Heshui Village (合水村) was included among Hainan’s third group of Minority Characteristic Villages in 2024. In 2025, Heshui hosted Tunchang’s main Sanyuesan celebrations, including Miao embroidery, traditional crafts, village markets and ethnic sporting activities.
The wider Nankun region combines forested hills, villages and traditional ethnic culture. Nankun Ethnic Cultural Tourism Area (南坤民族风情旅游区) has long been associated with local Miao customs and mountain scenery.
For website content, it is more accurate to describe Nankun as Tunchang’s principal minority-cultural tourism area rather than simply calling it the county’s “only minority town,” since minority populations also live elsewhere in the county.
Poxin Town: Central Transport Gateway and Rural Tourism
Poxin Town (坡心镇) lies close to Hainan’s central expressway corridor and serves as an important road gateway between Tunchang’s county centre, Dream Fragrant Hill and the southern parts of the county.
Its tourism resources are more dispersed than those of Tuncheng or Fengmu and are mainly associated with tropical agriculture, countryside landscapes and former state-farm communities. This makes Poxin suitable for rural-tourism and agricultural extensions rather than as a standalone major sightseeing destination.
A useful correction is necessary here: the Namtian Uprising Site is not in Poxin Town. Some secondary travel summaries incorrectly assign it to Poxin, but heritage records and current 2026 reporting confirm that it is located in Xichang Town.
Xichang Town: Revolutionary Heritage and Mining History
Xichang Town (西昌镇) is one of Tunchang’s most important destinations for revolutionary and industrial heritage.
The Namtian Uprising Site (南田起义旧址) in Namtian Village, Tulong Village Committee, commemorates an important 1927 episode in the revolutionary history of Hainan. The protected area includes the former site of the workers’ and peasants’ Red Guard oath-taking meeting, the uprising command post and the Red Army well. In June 2026, the site was formally unveiled as a new Hainan Provincial Patriotic Education Base.
Xichang also contains the Xichang Silver Mine Site (西昌银矿遗址), historic tombs and ancestral structures, as well as the former site associated with the early Communist organisation in Xipo. These give the town a distinctive combination of mining heritage, village history and red tourism.
