Lingao Overview

Lingao County (临高县) is a coastal county in northwestern Hainan Province, facing the Qiongzhou Strait and Beibu Gulf. Unlike the better-known resort areas of southern Hainan, Lingao is characterized by fishing ports, fertile agricultural plains, traditional coastal communities, distinctive local language and folk arts, and a growing modern industrial sector centered on Jinpai Port Development Zone. Long known as a “land of fish and rice,” Lingao is one of Hainan's important agricultural and marine-fishery counties and is increasingly integrated into the wider development of the Hainan Free Trade Port.

The county is also culturally distinctive within Hainan. Local fishing traditions, Lingao dialect/language, traditional theatre and fishermen's songs have created an identity quite different from both the Li and Miao areas of central Hainan and the international resort cities along the island's southern coast.

Official Hainan information gives Lingao a land area of approximately 1,299 square kilometers and a coastline of about 116.84 kilometers. The county administers 11 towns, while recent local profiles place its permanent population at roughly 423,700–424,100, depending on the statistical publication and reference date.

📍 Geography and Location

Lingao is located in the northwestern part of Hainan Island. It borders Chengmai County to the east and Danzhou City to the southwest, while its northern and northwestern coast faces the Qiongzhou Strait and Beibu Gulf. Across the Qiongzhou Strait lies the Leizhou Peninsula of Guangdong Province.

The county stretches approximately 34 kilometers from east to west and 47 kilometers from north to south. Its terrain is generally lower and flatter than the mountainous central part of Hainan, gradually descending from inland hills and terraces toward coastal plains, beaches, mudflats and fishing harbors. Fertile soils and relatively extensive flat land have helped make Lingao an important agricultural production area.

Geographically, Lingao also occupies a useful position between the Haikou–Chengmai economic area in northern Hainan and the Danzhou–Yangpu economic zone in western Hainan. This location has become increasingly important as transportation, port development and industrial investment expand along the western side of the island.

Lingao has a tropical maritime monsoon climate, with abundant sunshine, warm temperatures and a relatively long growing season. Average annual temperatures are generally around 23–25°C, while annual rainfall commonly ranges from approximately 1,100 to 1,800 millimeters, depending on location and year.

The warmest period usually falls between June and August, when daytime temperatures frequently exceed 30°C and humidity is high. Winter, particularly from December to February, is much milder and drier than in most parts of mainland China.

Rainfall is concentrated mainly in the warmer half of the year. Tropical storms and typhoons can influence Lingao during summer and autumn, although western and northwestern Hainan often experience somewhat different storm patterns from the island's eastern coastline. For agriculture, the long frost-free season and abundant heat resources support tropical fruit, vegetables, rice and other crops.

Lingao is connected to the rest of Hainan primarily by expressway, national highway and high-speed railway. The G98 Hainan Ring Expressway provides road access toward Haikou, Danzhou and other western Hainan destinations, while G225 National Highway, historically known as the western route of the Haiyu Highway, also passes through the county.

Lingao South Railway Station (临高南站) is located on the western section of the Hainan Island high-speed railway network. This allows travelers to reach Lingao conveniently from Haikou, Danzhou, Dongfang, Sanya and other cities along the island's rail loop. Official provincial information places Lingao roughly 83 kilometers from Haikou, making the provincial capital the county's most important aviation and long-distance transportation gateway.

Maritime transportation is another important part of Lingao's geographic advantage. The county has a number of fishing harbors and natural port resources, while the development of Jinpai Port is strengthening Lingao's role in industrial logistics, marine manufacturing and the western coastal economy.

Lingao has a resident population of approximately 424,000. The population is concentrated mainly in Lincheng and other established towns, agricultural communities and coastal fishing settlements. Recent local profiles list the permanent population at about 423,700, while another 2024 statistical reference gives approximately 424,100, so it is most accurate for general travel information to describe Lingao as having around 420,000 residents.

One of Lingao's most distinctive cultural characteristics is the widespread use of the Lingao language, traditionally spoken by many local communities. Mandarin is widely used in education, government and public services, while Hainanese and other forms of Chinese can also be heard.

The population is predominantly classified as Han Chinese, alongside smaller communities belonging to ethnic minority groups such as the Li, Miao and Zhuang. The county's cultural identity, however, cannot be understood only through official ethnic categories: Lingao-speaking communities have developed a particularly distinctive local tradition shaped by agriculture, fishing, maritime life and centuries of regional interaction.

Lingao has a long history of settlement and is particularly known for its strong folk-art traditions and fishing culture. The county has been recognized as a “Hometown of Chinese Folk Culture and Art,” reflecting the importance of traditional theatre, music, poetry and community performance in local life.

Two cultural traditions are especially important. Lingao Puppet Theatre (临高人偶戏) is unusual because human performers and puppets appear together on stage, often representing the same character. The tradition has a history of several centuries and was included in China's first group of national intangible cultural heritage items.

The fishermen's song “Li Li Mei” (哩哩美) developed in coastal communities such as Xinying and Diaolou and reflects fishing, maritime labor, courtship and everyday life by the sea. It is also protected as a national-level intangible cultural heritage tradition. Together with local opera and the Lingao language, these art forms give the county one of the most recognizable folk-culture identities in western Hainan.

Lingao also occupies an important place in the modern history of Hainan because the county's coastline was closely associated with the 1950 Hainan Island Campaign. This historical legacy continues to influence local education, memorial culture and red-tourism development.

💰 Economy and Major Industries

Lingao was traditionally an economy dominated by agriculture and fisheries, and these sectors remain important today. Fertile plains support rice, vegetables, bananas, pineapples and other tropical crops, while products such as Duowen water spinach have developed strong local recognition. Marine fishing is especially important: official Hainan information notes that Lingao's marine fishery output and value have ranked among the highest in the province.

In recent years, however, the county's economic structure has been changing rapidly. Jinpai Port Development Zone (金牌港开发区) has emerged as a major industrial growth platform, with investment focused on new construction materials, prefabricated building components, marine equipment manufacturing, renewable energy and advanced manufacturing.

By the end of 2024, local authorities reported that 46 industrial projects had been introduced into the development zone, including projects related to new construction industries, marine equipment, new energy and high-end equipment manufacturing. In 2024, Lingao's GDP was reported to have grown by about 5.4 percent, while fixed-asset investment increased substantially, reflecting the strong impact of major infrastructure and industrial projects.

The marine economy is also moving beyond traditional fishing. Offshore wind power, port logistics, yacht and marine-equipment manufacturing, aquaculture and other ocean-related industries are increasingly important components of Lingao's development strategy.

Lingao's reputation as a “land of fish and rice” comes from the combination of productive farmland and rich coastal waters. Rice, melons, tropical fruit, vegetables and rubber have traditionally been important agricultural products, while the county's broad mudflats and shallow coastal waters support fishing and aquaculture.

Fishing is more than an economic activity in Lingao; it has also shaped local food, festivals, songs, harbor communities and family traditions. Seasonal fishing activities and fishing-port culture remain highly visible in many coastal settlements, helping distinguish Lingao from Hainan's resort-oriented coastal counties.

The county has also promoted the concept of slower, lifestyle-oriented travel, using coastal countryside and local culture to differentiate itself from Hainan's major mass-tourism destinations. Modern Lingao is undergoing a transition from a traditional agricultural and fishing county toward a more diversified coastal economy. Agriculture and fisheries remain central to local identity, but industrial development at Jinpai Port, marine equipment manufacturing, renewable energy and improved transportation are creating new economic drivers.

At the same time, Lingao retains a strong local character through its Lingao-speaking communities, fishermen's songs, human-puppet theatre, fishing traditions and historical heritage.
