Lingao County (临高县) lies on the northwestern coast of Hainan Island, facing the Qiongzhou Strait. Compared with Sanya, Wanning or Lingshui, Lingao is not dominated by large commercial resorts. Hainan Liberation Park: Lingao's Signature Attraction

Hainan Liberation Park (海南解放公园), also commonly associated with Lingao Cape (临高角), is the most important attraction in the county. It was one of the principal landing areas during the 1950 campaign that resulted in the capture of Hainan Island and today combines revolutionary history with coastal scenery.

The park became a national AAAA-rated tourist attraction in 2022 and is also a national patriotic education site. Its major features include the Liberation of Hainan Landing Campaign Memorial Hall, Bloody Monument, memorial sculptures, former defensive positions, observation facilities and Lingao Lighthouse.

The historic Lingao Lighthouse dates from 1893 and is one of the area's most recognizable landmarks. The cape itself projects into the sea, creating contrasting coastal conditions on different sides and the traditional scenic phenomenon known as “Autumn Waves of the South Sea” (南海秋涛). Lingao's official tourism promotion also identifies the lighthouse and coastal battlefield landscape as important local tourism resources.

Hainan Liberation Park remains among Hainan's free-admission A-rated attractions in 2026, although individual exhibition halls may operate according to separate opening schedules.

Guyin Waterfall: Lingao's Best Natural Attraction

Guyin Waterfall (古银瀑布), also referred to in some sources as Juren Waterfall (居仁瀑布), lies west of Juren Village in Huangtong Town.

The waterfall is created by a sudden drop across otherwise relatively flat terrain. It measures approximately 20 meters high and 20 meters across, with water falling beside old banyan trees and dark volcanic-looking rocks. Its appearance varies markedly with rainfall: during the wet season the waterfall becomes broad and powerful, while in drier periods the flow is much gentler.

Guyin Waterfall is a national AA-rated scenic attraction and remains free to enter according to current published listings.

It is particularly suitable for a half-day countryside excursion, although paths and rocks can become slippery after heavy rain.

Wenlan Cultural Park

Wenlan Cultural Park (文澜文化公园) is the most recognizable modern cultural landscape in Lingao's county seat.

Its signature feature is an approximately 1.7-kilometer archway corridor containing 87 stone archways, decorated with classical Chinese couplets and calligraphy. The overall design brings together archway architecture, calligraphy, stone carving and traditional literary culture.

Unlike conventional ticketed attractions, Wenlan Cultural Park functions primarily as a large urban public space. It is especially pleasant in the late afternoon and evening, when local residents use the riverside area for walking and recreation.

Lingao Confucian Temple

Lingao Confucian Temple (临高文庙) provides the strongest connection with the county's traditional scholarly history.

Originally founded during the Northern Song Dynasty, it was subsequently relocated and rebuilt through the Ming and Qing periods. Its surviving complex includes the Dacheng Hall, Dacheng Gate, eastern and western halls, Shrine of Famous Officials and Shrine of Local Worthies.

Xinying Ancient Fishing Village

Lingao fishing communities are also known for Li Li Mei fishing songs (哩哩美渔歌). The tradition is associated particularly with Xinying and Diaolou and forms part of China's national intangible cultural heritage.

Houshui Bay Mangrove Wetland

Nearby Houshui Bay (后水湾) contains extensive mangrove wetlands around Xinying. The protected wetland supports mangrove vegetation, tidal ecosystems and numerous birds. It is also an important wintering environment for rare migratory species including the black-faced spoonbill.

Visitors should approach the area as an ecological wetland rather than a developed theme attraction. Avoid disturbing birds, entering protected mangrove stands or independently taking boats into restricted sections.

Touyang Haitang and Gengdu Shanfang

Touyang Haitang Fishing and Farming Cultural Tourism Area (头洋·海堂渔耕文化旅游区) in Dongying Town represents Lingao's emerging rural tourism style. Rather than building large artificial attractions, the project draws on fishing culture, farming, tea, local heritage and countryside recreation.

A Coastal Scenic Highway rest station opened here in 2024, incorporating tea culture, Li cultural elements and marine culture into the visitor experience.

The site has also hosted performances of Lingao's two important national intangible heritage traditions—Li Li Mei fishing songs and Lingao puppet theatre (临高人偶戏).

Nearby Gengdu Shanfang (耕读山房) is particularly suitable for families and study-tour groups. Activities include farming, vegetable planting, traditional crafts, pottery and educational programs built around the traditional Chinese idea of combining farming with learning. Lingao Coastal Scenic Highway Experiences

Lingao Window

Lingao Window (临高之窗) stands near the Wenlan River estuary and was opened as Lingao's visitor reception center in 2024. The surrounding area combines beach scenery, sailing, camping, recreation and visitor services and serves as an important gateway to the Lingao section of the Hainan Coastal Scenic Highway.

Futi Chuange

Futi Chuange (扶提船歌) around Futi Village offers a more relaxed coastal stop built around seafood, beach activities, camping and village life. An upgrade project was moving forward again in July 2026, so facilities may continue to change.

Meixia International Sea Fishing & Leisure Center

Meixia International Sea Fishing & Leisure Center (美夏国际休闲海钓运动中心) is one of Lingao's newest marine-tourism projects. The center began trial operation during China's National Day holiday in 2025 and combines recreational fishing, cultural experiences, food and leisure facilities.

Expansion of its berthing and waterfront facilities was still proceeding in 2026, so it should be viewed as a developing marine-sports destination rather than a fully mature traditional scenic area.

Other Natural and Historical Attractions

Gaoshanling (高山岭), historically called Biye Mountain, is an inland green space northwest of Lingao's county seat. Forest, rocks and small lakes create a quiet mountain landscape and provide an alternative to the coastline. Lingao tourism promotion continues to list Gaoshanling among the county's notable natural resources.

Bairentan (百仞滩) lies along the lower Wenlan River and is known historically for river scenery and ancient cliff inscriptions. The Bairentan inscriptions are protected as a provincial cultural heritage site, while ecological restoration has improved the river landscape in recent years.

Jinshatan Beach (金沙滩) is another traditional seaside leisure area promoted in Lingao tourism materials, combining sandy coastline, coconut vegetation and northwestern Hainan's relatively uncrowded beach atmosphere.
