Ledong Li Autonomous County (乐东黎族自治县) is one of the most rewarding destinations on Hainan’s western side for travelers who want to move beyond the island’s famous beach resorts. While neighboring Sanya focuses on international hotels and resort beaches, Ledong combines tropical rainforest, mountains, traditional Li culture, salt fields, fishing communities, quiet bays and rural landscapes. The county covers about 2,760 square kilometers and stretches from the mountainous interior to an 84-kilometer coastline, giving it an unusually diverse natural environment.
The two strongest themes for a first trip are very different from each other: the dense rainforest of Jianfengling (尖峰岭) and the open coastal landscapes around Yinggehai (莺歌海). For this reason, Ledong is best explored slowly rather than as a quick day trip. Two days are sufficient for the main highlights, while three days and two nights provide a much better balance of rainforest, salt-field scenery, coastal life, local food and Li cultural experiences.
🗺️ How Many Days Do You Need in Ledong?
For most travelers, 3 days and 2 nights is the ideal length. A two-day trip can cover Jianfengling and Yinggehai, but it requires relatively tight driving times and leaves little flexibility for rainforest weather. Three days allow you to stay overnight near Jianfengling, visit the salt fields around sunset, enjoy the coast the following morning and spend time in Huangliu or a Li cultural community.

Recommended 3-Day Ledong Tour
Day 1: Sanya – Jianfengling – Mingfeng Valley – Tianchi Lake
Travel from Sanya toward western Ledong in the morning. Self-driving or using a private vehicle is the most convenient option because Ledong’s attractions are widely separated and local transportation becomes limited once you leave the main towns. Travelers using the Hainan Ring High-Speed Railway can take a train to stations such as Jianfeng Station (尖峰站) or Huangliu Station (黄流站) and arrange onward transport, but taxis and ride-hailing vehicles may be harder to find in remote areas. The western high-speed railway officially serves Jianfeng, Huangliu and Ledong stations.
Spend the afternoon exploring Jianfengling National Forest Park (尖峰岭国家森林公园), now one of the key visitor areas associated with Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park. Jianfengling protects one of Hainan’s most important tropical rainforest ecosystems and is officially promoted as one of the largest and best-preserved tropical rainforest areas in China.
A good introduction is Mingfeng Valley (鸣凤谷), where established walking paths pass through dense tropical vegetation. Towering trees, vines, epiphytes, buttress roots and the classic rainforest phenomenon of strangler figs make this area suitable for travelers who want to experience tropical forest without committing to a demanding mountain trek. Because the forest floor and boardwalks remain damp for long periods, proper walking shoes are much more useful than ordinary beach sandals.
Continue toward Tianchi Lake (天池), a mountain lake surrounded by forest. Staying near the Jianfengling or Tianchi area gives the trip a completely different atmosphere from coastal Hainan: mornings can be misty, evenings are quiet, and temperatures at elevation can feel noticeably cooler than on the coast.
Do not overfill the first day. Rainforest travel is highly dependent on weather, and allowing several hours for slow walking, photography and short stops is far more rewarding than trying to check off every viewpoint.
Day 2: Jianfengling – Yinggehai Salt Field – Yinggehai Town
Travelers interested in hiking can devote the early part of the second day to another approved section of Jianfengling. Sunrise and mountain-view experiences are associated with the Jianfengling area, and Hainan’s official rainforest scenic-road guide specifically promotes sunrise experiences in this western rainforest region. However, access rules, entry hours and permitted hiking areas can change because Jianfengling is part of an ecologically protected national-park landscape. Confirm current conditions locally before attempting an early-morning or summit hike rather than assuming unrestricted night access.
After leaving the mountains, continue toward Yinggehai Town (莺歌海镇). The dramatic transition from humid rainforest to dry, open salt fields is one of the most interesting aspects of traveling through Ledong.
The highlight is Yinggehai Salt Field (莺歌海盐场), one of Hainan’s major traditional sea-salt production areas and one of China's best-known large salt fields. The geometric evaporation ponds stretch toward the horizon, creating mirror-like reflections when shallow water and calm weather coincide. Hainan's provincial tourism authorities continue to promote the old salt field as a key destination on western Hainan routes, including a 2026 coastal itinerary.
Late afternoon is generally the most comfortable time to visit. The salt pans have very little shade, and strong tropical sunshine makes midday visits less pleasant. Toward sunset, the rectangular ponds reflect gold, pink and purple light, producing the “mirror of the sky” effect for which the area has become popular with photographers.
Where visitor facilities are operating, the salt-culture experience can add useful context to the scenery. Exhibitions and tourism development around the old salt works have introduced visitors to traditional salt production, the history of the salt workers and the transformation of Yinggehai from an industrial salt-production area into a cultural-tourism destination.
Stay overnight around Yinggehai, Huangliu, or another convenient coastal town. Accommodation here is generally simpler than in Sanya, which is part of Ledong's appeal but should be considered when planning expectations.
Day 3: Yinggehai Coast – Longmu Bay – Huangliu – Departure
Spend the morning exploring the coastal side of Ledong. Yingge Yumeng Sea Paradise (莺歌渔梦·海乐园) is now included among Ledong's officially recommended western Hainan tourism products and can be considered for families or travelers looking for a more relaxed marine experience after the rainforest.
Another option is Longmu Bay (龙沐湾), which appears on Hainan's official coastal scenic-highway route. Compared with Hainan's major resort bays, this section of coastline tends to feel quieter and less intensely developed. It works well for walking, coastal photography and simply spending time beside the sea before continuing the journey.
Finish the trip in Huangliu Town (黄流镇), one of the best places to experience local Ledong food. Rather than looking for an international-style restaurant, explore the streets around the town and local market area, where traditional eateries concentrate many of the county's best-known dishes.
From Huangliu, continue back toward Sanya, take the high-speed railway, or extend the trip west toward Dongfang and Changjiang.
🌿 Li Culture and Alternative Experiences
Ledong should not be understood only through Jianfengling and the coast. It is a Li autonomous county, and Li culture forms an important part of its identity. Traditional weaving, food, village architecture, farming traditions and local festivals can add considerable depth to a journey that would otherwise focus mainly on landscapes.
The Baisha River Valley Local Culture Park (白沙河谷本土文化园) has been associated with collections and displays related to Li and Miao history and traditional culture. If you plan to include it, confirm current visitor arrangements before departure, as smaller cultural attractions can change opening schedules more frequently than major scenic areas.
Villages such as Xili Village (西黎村) can also provide opportunities to learn about local community culture and Li brocade, although village visits are best treated as genuine cultural experiences rather than staged photo stops. Allow time to speak with local hosts, see traditional handicrafts and understand how Li traditions coexist with contemporary rural life.
Jiaxi Village (佳西村) is included in Hainan's official rainforest scenic-road recommendations for Ledong. The surrounding area is known for its forest landscapes, but travelers should clearly distinguish between accessible villages and protected rainforest areas.
🥢 What to Eat in Ledong
The signature dish is Huangliu Duck (黄流老鸭), one of the best-known foods in western Hainan. Traditionally prepared using mature duck, it may be served poached or stir-fried and accompanied by a dipping sauce containing ingredients such as ginger, garlic and local citrus. Hainan's provincial tourism information specifically recommends Huangliu Duck among the characteristic foods of Ledong and the western-island travel corridor.
Around Yinggehai, local food naturally reflects the sea and the salt industry. Local seafood, salt-related products and refreshing drinks made with traditional sea salt are easy themes to explore. Sea-salt ice cream and salted citrus drinks have also become popular contemporary interpretations of Yinggehai's salt culture.
In Li communities, travelers may encounter Shanlan rice, five-colored glutinous rice, woven-tray meals, small river fish, mountain vegetables and locally raised meats. These meals are especially worthwhile when arranged through a village or local host because the cultural context is as important as the food itself.
🚗 Getting to and Around Ledong
Self-driving or hiring a private car with a driver is the best way to explore Ledong. The county stretches from high mountains to the coast, and attempting to combine Jianfengling, Yinggehai and rural villages entirely by public transportation can consume a disproportionate amount of travel time.
From Sanya, the G98 Hainan Ring Expressway provides convenient access toward Ledong's western towns. The Hainan Ring High-Speed Railway is another useful option, with Jianfeng, Huangliu and Ledong among the western-line stations.
Foreign travelers intending to self-drive should remember that an overseas or International Driving Permit alone generally does not replace the driving documentation required in China. For most short-term international visitors, arranging a private vehicle and driver is considerably easier.
Before driving into Jianfengling, refuel in the main town and carry sufficient drinking water. Mountain services are much less concentrated than along the coastal expressway, and mobile reception may weaken in forested valleys.
🌤️ Best Time to Visit Ledong
October to April is the easiest period for a general Ledong tour. Conditions are usually drier and more comfortable for salt-field photography, coastal activities and road trips, while humidity is somewhat lower than during the summer rainy season.
May to September offers the lushest rainforest scenery. Jianfengling becomes intensely green, streams carry more water and the forest environment can be pleasantly cooler than the exposed coast. However, this is also Hainan's hotter, wetter season, with frequent showers and potential tropical storms or typhoons.
There is therefore no single best season for every traveler. Choose the wetter months if your priority is rainforest atmosphere, and the drier months if your priority is coastlines, salt fields, photography and easier road conditions.
⚠️ Important Travel Tips
Jianfengling is both a tourism destination and part of an ecologically sensitive protected landscape. Stay on officially open roads, trails and visitor areas, follow local national-park instructions and never enter closed forest zones simply because a social-media post shows an attractive waterfall or viewpoint. Protected rainforest should not be treated as unrestricted trekking territory.
Rainforest conditions require non-slip shoes, insect repellent and lightweight rain protection. Long trousers are useful during the wet season, particularly on natural trails where insects and leeches may occur. Mountain conditions can also feel substantially cooler than the coast, so carry a light windproof layer if you plan early-morning hiking.
At Yinggehai Salt Field and the coast, the problem is the opposite: there is little shade and ultraviolet exposure can be intense. Sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and sufficient drinking water are essential, particularly between late morning and mid-afternoon.
Driving after dark in unfamiliar mountain areas is not recommended. Fog, rain, narrow curves and vegetation can reduce visibility, while services are limited compared with Sanya. Download offline maps before entering remote sections.
Who Should Visit Ledong?
Ledong is particularly suitable for nature lovers, photographers, self-drive travelers, small private groups, families interested in ecological experiences and visitors who want to understand Li culture and western Hainan. It is also an excellent choice for travelers who have already visited Sanya, Wanning or Lingshui and want to see a less commercialized side of the island.
Travelers seeking luxury beachfront resorts, extensive nightlife or highly developed tourist infrastructure may still prefer Sanya. Ledong offers something different: rainforest mornings, mountain lakes, salt-field sunsets, fishing towns, Li villages and quiet stretches of western coastline.
For a first visit, the most balanced route is:
Sanya – Jianfengling – Tianchi Lake – Yinggehai Salt Field – Yinggehai – Longmu Bay – Huangliu – Sanya
With extra time, Ledong can naturally continue westward as:
Sanya – Ledong – Dongfang – Changjiang, combining Jianfengling with the wider Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park Scenic Road and Hainan Coastal Scenic Highway. This Ledong–Dongfang–Changjiang combination is also one of Hainan's officially promoted western tourism routes for 2026.
