Features of Haikou Climate

Haikou has a long annual sunshine duration and large radiation energy. The average annual sunshine duration is more than 2000 hours. Annual average temperature is 24.3℃, the highest average temperature of 28℃ and the lowest average temperature of 18℃ or so. The annual average precipitation is 2067 mm, and the annual average evaporation is 1834 mm. Haikou is mainly effected by southeaster and northeaster, and the annual average wind speed is 3.4 m/s.

Although annual average temperature in Haikou maintains at 20℃ or so, May to October is the rainy season in Haikou every year, especially in September, the rainfall peak. At this period, tourists travel could be inconvenient. In addition, the eastern part of Hainan island is known as the "typhoon corridor", so don't forget to listen to the typhoon warning issued by the meteorological department in summer and autumn. In the event of a strong typhoon, Haikou traffic will be affected, flights may be canceled, waterways will be suspended.

• Spring(March-May): Spring days are warm. It is a good time to go out and feel the sunshine and flowers. You can also go to Haikou and feel the lively atmosphere of flower exchange festival(换花节).

Best Season to Visit

October to May of the following year is the best time to visit Haikou. During this period, Haikou is calm and the climate was pleasant. When cold current from north comes to attack, Haikou is still warm and breezy. At this time, coconut festival(on the 3rd of the 3rd lunar month) and Junpo festival(from the 9th day to the 19th day of the 2nd lunar month) are celebrated.

What to Pack

Annual average temperature in Haikou basically maintains at 20℃, even in winter, relative to the weather in the north, Haikou is also warm and comfortable. You just need a simple coat and T-shirt. Haikou is rainy in summer, please prepare rain gear. The ultraviolet radiation in Hainan island is very strong, sunglasses, high index sun cream and sunshade are essential. You'd better still prepare some of medicines that prevent sunstroke, intestines and stomach diseases and the liquid medicine that prevents mosquito.
