Changjiang Li Autonomous County (昌江黎族自治县) is one of the best destinations in western Hainan for travelers who want to combine tropical rainforest, Li ethnic culture, karst mountains, fishing villages, wetlands and quiet tropical coastline in one trip. Compared with Sanya, Changjiang receives fewer conventional holiday crowds and is better suited to a slower road trip built around nature and local communities.
The county's tourism geography is relatively easy to understand. The western coastal zone centers on Qizi Bay, Shayutang Village and Haiwei, while the southeastern mountain zone includes Bawangling and Wangxia Township. Changjiang's own tourism planning identifies Bawangling, Wangxia Shili Gallery, Haiwei National Wetland Park and Qizi Bay among its key tourism resources.
Because these areas are widely separated, 3 days is the ideal length for a first visit, and a rental car or private vehicle with driver is much more convenient than trying to connect all the attractions by public transport.

Day 1: Qizi Bay, Shayutang Village and the Western Coast
Qizi Bay
Qizi Bay (棋子湾) is Changjiang's signature coastal landscape. The bay stretches along approximately 13 kilometers of coastline and combines clear water, beaches, rocky shores and unusual coastal formations. It is widely promoted locally as one of western Hainan's best places for watching the sunset.
The coastline is commonly divided into Dajiao, Zhongjiao and Xiaojiao, each offering a slightly different experience. Dajiao is the most dramatic for open coastal scenery and road-trip photography, while rocky sections around Zhongjiao are popular with visitors interested in exploring the shore at low tide. Quieter parts of the coastline are particularly atmospheric in the late afternoon.
For photography, arrive after mid-afternoon and stay through sunset. The western orientation is one of Qizi Bay's strongest advantages: rather than rushing from attraction to attraction, this is a destination where leaving two or three hours simply for walking, photography and watching the light change is worthwhile.
Coastal Foraging and Tide Safety
Exploring tidal flats can be enjoyable, but always check local tide information before entering rocky or exposed coastal areas. Do not continue far onto reefs as the tide begins to rise, and avoid coastal exploration during thunderstorms, strong winds, typhoons or rough-sea warnings.
Wear closed water shoes rather than flip-flops because submerged rocks, shells and coral fragments can be sharp and slippery.
Shayutang Village
Continue to Shayutang Village (沙渔塘村), a fishing settlement that became nationally known after being used as a filming location for the television program Back to Field. Changjiang has since incorporated Shayutang into its coastal tourism promotion together with Qizi Bay and the surrounding scenic road network.
The appeal is less about major sightseeing monuments and more about the fishing-village atmosphere, shoreline, seafood and relaxed coastal life. It is a good stop between Qizi Bay and other western Changjiang attractions.
Stay near Qizi Bay if you want a resort atmosphere and easy sunset access, or return to Shilu Town (石碌镇) if you prefer more restaurants and practical services.
Day 2: Bawangling Tropical Rainforest
Bawangling
Spend the second day in the Bawangling area of Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park (海南热带雨林国家公园霸王岭片区).
Bawangling protects extensive tropical rainforest ecosystems and is particularly important because this region is the only natural habitat in the world of the Hainan gibbon, one of the world's rarest primates. The wider Bawangling division of the national park covers about 128.5 ten-thousand mu and contains exceptionally rich tropical forest vegetation.
For ordinary visitors, the best experience is to stay on the officially opened rainforest trails, where giant trees, vines, streams, waterfalls and dense tropical vegetation create the classic Bawangling landscape. The Yajia scenic area remains the developed visitor zone with established tourism facilities, and it continued receiving visitors during the 2025 holiday season.
Do Not Plan a Trip Around Seeing Hainan Gibbons
Although Bawangling is the key conservation area for the Hainan gibbon, travelers should not treat wildlife sightings as a guaranteed tourist attraction. The animals live in strictly protected rainforest habitat, and conservation takes priority over photography or wildlife chasing.
Stay within authorized visitor areas and follow park staff instructions. A responsible visit should focus on rainforest ecology and conservation, rather than attempting to locate gibbons independently.
⚠️ Do Not Enter Changjiang Butterfly Valley
One warning deserves particular emphasis. The so-called “Changjiang Butterfly Valley (昌江蝴蝶谷)” circulating on social media is not an officially opened tourist attraction.
The Bawangling branch of Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park has stated that the area includes both core protection and general-control zones and lacks tourism and emergency-rescue facilities. Unauthorized entry can result in getting lost, wildlife encounters and other serious risks, and unauthorized outdoor activities may also violate national park regulations.
Ignore online “secret hiking route” recommendations and use only officially opened trails.
Day 3: Wangxia Township and Li Huali Scenic Area
Wangxia Township
Wangxia Township (王下乡) is the cultural highlight of Changjiang and provides the strongest contrast to the coastal first day. Deep mountains, karst formations, river valleys and Li villages have led the area to develop around the tourism identity of Li culture and rainforest landscapes.
An important update for travelers is that the upgraded Li Huali Scenic Area (黎花里景区) officially opened to the public on February 13, 2026. The new visitor system links the area's villages and attractions through electric sightseeing vehicles and adds upgraded visitor services, cultural workshops and immersive experiences.
This means older travel guides describing Wangxia simply as a collection of free, undeveloped village attractions may no longer accurately reflect current visitor management. Check the latest operating hours, tickets and shuttle arrangements before arrival.
Sanpai, Hongshui and Langlun Villages
The cultural landscape is organized around several Li communities with different themes.
Sanpai Village (三派村) introduces visitors to village life, Li cultural imagery and the mountain landscape. Hongshui Village (洪水村) is particularly associated with traditional boat-shaped thatched houses, an important element of traditional Li architecture. Langlun Village (浪论村) emphasizes Li songs, local cultural activities and rural leisure experiences.
The upgraded Li Huali area also includes intangible-cultural-heritage workshops and village-based activities, making it a better destination for travelers interested in Li weaving, traditional crafts and local cultural interpretation, rather than simply photographing village houses.
Allow enough time to walk slowly and interact respectfully with the communities. These are not merely film sets; people continue to live in the villages.
Huangdi Cave and Shili Gallery
Huangdi Cave
Huangdi Cave (皇帝洞) is one of the most unusual landscapes in Wangxia. The huge limestone cavern lies within the karst mountains and combines geological formations with archaeological significance. Local government information describes it as a large limestone cave formed through long-term groundwater erosion, while archaeological discoveries have connected the site with prehistoric human activity.
Following recent tourism upgrades, the cave has also received new visitor facilities and immersive lighting installations as part of the Li Huali development.
Good walking shoes remain important. Cave surfaces can be damp and slippery, and visitors should not leave designated paths or touch mineral formations.
Shili Gallery
Nearby Shili Gallery (十里画廊) follows the Nanyao River valley through dramatic karst terrain. Limestone peaks, river scenery, forest and village landscapes combine to create one of the most attractive inland landscapes in western Hainan. The area begins around Huangdi Cave and extends westward through the karst valley.
Recent tourism development has added sightseeing and leisure activities, including river-based experiences. Because the mountain roads around Huangdi Cave and Shili Gallery contain narrow sections and multiple bends, drive cautiously and follow temporary traffic management whenever introduced during busy periods or construction.
Haiwei National Wetland Park
Hainan Changjiang Haiwei National Wetland Park (海南昌江海尾国家湿地公园) is one of the best additions to a coastal Changjiang itinerary, particularly for birdwatchers.
After ecological restoration and facility improvements, the wetland reopened to visitors in October 2025. It covers more than 5,000 mu and represents one of Hainan Island's relatively rare coastal freshwater marsh ecosystems. By late 2025, 213 bird species had been recorded, including 42 nationally protected species.
The most rewarding season for birdwatching is generally during the cooler migratory-bird period. Viewing platforms and educational facilities make this a much more accessible wildlife experience than trying to enter undeveloped rainforest areas.
Bring binoculars or a telephoto lens, remain on visitor paths and never approach nesting or feeding birds simply for photographs.
Best Time to Visit Changjiang
Changjiang can be visited throughout the year, but the destination changes noticeably with the seasons.
February and March are particularly special because kapok trees bloom across the mountain valleys, villages and river landscapes. Changjiang has developed its annual Spring Kapok tourism season, with Wangxia, Qicha and other inland areas among the main viewing zones. The 2026 season again promoted Huangdi Cave and Shili Gallery as important places for seeing red kapok flowers against karst mountains.
October to April generally works especially well for coastal sightseeing, hiking and birdwatching because conditions are often more comfortable. May to October is the wetter period around Bawangling; the national park advises visitors to prepare for rain, particularly during afternoons.
Summer is lush and green but requires greater flexibility because tropical downpours, typhoons and mountain weather can temporarily affect roads, trails and attractions.
🚗 Getting to Changjiang
By High-Speed Rail
Changjiang is connected to Hainan's western coastal railway through Qiziwan Railway Station (棋子湾站). This is a useful option for travelers arriving from Haikou, Sanya or other cities along the island railway, but a car is still recommended after arrival because the major attractions are spread across coastal and mountain areas.
By Car
Driving is the most practical way to explore Changjiang. From Haikou or Sanya, travelers can use Hainan's expressway network and then connect with local roads toward Shilu, Qizi Bay, Bawangling and Wangxia.
Mountain roads around Bawangling and Wangxia contain bends, slopes and narrow sections, so allow more time than the straight-line distance suggests. A normal passenger car is sufficient for standard paved tourist roads under normal conditions; there is no need to rent an SUV solely for ordinary sightseeing.
Where to Stay in Changjiang
For a three-day trip, it is usually better to change accommodation once rather than drive repeatedly across the county.
Qizi Bay is the strongest choice for beach resorts, sunsets and a relaxed coastal night. Shilu Town offers the most practical concentration of restaurants, shops and general services.
For rainforest and Li cultural travel, staying around Bawangling or Wangxia reduces driving and creates a more immersive experience. Wangxia's growing tourism sector now includes village guesthouses, Li-themed accommodation, rainforest cafés and cultural experiences as part of the upgraded Li Huali destination.
International visitors booking small village guesthouses should confirm in advance that the property can complete foreign-guest registration.
🍜 What to Eat in Changjiang
Changjiang food reflects both its coastal location and its strong Li cultural heritage. Wulie young goat (乌烈乳羊) is one of the county's recognizable local specialties, while coastal areas provide access to freshly landed fish, shrimp, crab and other seafood.
Around Haiwei and the western fishing communities, seafood meals are a natural part of the experience. In Li villages, travelers may encounter bamboo-tube rice, Shanlan rice wine, traditional rice dishes and communal Li-style meals.
Rather than planning meals around individual internet-famous restaurants—which can change quickly—look for established local restaurants, licensed seafood businesses and village dining arranged through recognized tourism operators.
⚠️ Essential Changjiang Travel Tips
Stay Out of Unopened Rainforest Areas
This is the most important safety rule. Do not enter Butterfly Valley or other undeveloped sections of Bawangling based on social-media hiking posts. The national park has formally warned that these zones lack visitor and rescue infrastructure.
Check Weather Before Mountain Activities
Tropical mountain weather changes rapidly. Heavy rainfall can make streams rise and paths slippery. During typhoon warnings, thunderstorms or intense rainfall, postpone rainforest hiking, canyon activities and river exploration.
Check Tides Before Coastal Foraging
At Qizi Bay and other rocky shores, enter tidal areas only during safe conditions and leave well before incoming water cuts off the return route.
Prepare for Rainforest Conditions
Bring mosquito repellent, sunscreen, drinking water, lightweight rainwear and shoes with good grip. Long, breathable trousers are preferable for rainforest walking because they offer better protection from insects and vegetation.
Respect Li Communities
Ask permission before photographing residents, traditional craft activities or private homes. Avoid entering courtyards or traditional houses simply because a door is open.
Recommended 3-Day Changjiang Tour
A balanced first trip can be kept very simple:
Day 1: Qizi Bay – Shayutang Village – Haiwei National Wetland Park
Spend the day experiencing Changjiang's western coast, fishing-village landscapes and wetlands before watching sunset around Qizi Bay.
Day 2: Bawangling
Dedicate a full day to the officially opened tropical rainforest trails. Do not attempt unauthorized gibbon tracking or social-media “wild routes.”
Day 3: Wangxia – Li Huali – Huangdi Cave – Shili Gallery
Spend the final day exploring Li culture and karst scenery. The newly upgraded Li Huali Scenic Area, opened in February 2026, makes Wangxia increasingly suitable for a full-day cultural and nature experience rather than a brief village stop.
This arrangement captures what makes Changjiang distinctive: one day by the sea, one day in the rainforest and one day immersed in Li culture and karst mountains.
Changjiang Tours with Yaso Trip
A Changjiang Tour with Yaso Trip is best designed as a private 2–3 day road journey. First-time travelers can combine Qizi Bay, Haiwei National Wetland Park, Bawangling and Wangxia, while photographers visiting in February or March can add the seasonal kapok landscapes around Qicha and Wangxia.
Nature-focused tours should prioritize officially opened national-park trails and protected wetland viewing areas, while cultural travelers can spend more time in Li Huali, Hongshui Village, Huangdi Cave and Shili Gallery. The key is not to pack too much into one day: Changjiang's strongest attraction is the transition from sea to rainforest to Li village, and that experience is much better when traveled slowly.
