Changjiang Li Autonomous County (昌江黎族自治县) is one of the most distinctive destinations in western Hainan, where tropical rainforest, rare wildlife, Li ethnic culture, karst valleys, wetlands and a rugged tropical coastline come together within one county. Its two strongest tourism symbols are Bawangling, part of Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park and the world's only remaining habitat of the Hainan gibbon, and Qizi Bay, known for beaches, coastal rock formations and some of western Hainan's most memorable sunsets.
Changjiang is particularly attractive for travelers interested in rainforest ecology, road trips, photography, Li culture, birdwatching, coastal scenery and rural experiences. Recent official tourism routes also combine Bawangling, Wangxia's Lihuali cultural area, Emperor Cave, the Nanyao River landscape, Qizi Bay, Shayutang fishing village and historical sites around Changhua into several themed self-drive itineraries.
One important update concerns Bawangling National Forest Park: as of the Hainan tourism authority's March 13, 2026 official A-rated attraction list, it remains a National 3A Tourist Attraction. Therefore, references to a 4A upgrade should be treated as development or upgrading plans rather than a completed rating.

Bawangling National Forest Park
Bawangling National Forest Park (霸王岭国家森林公园) is Changjiang's most important ecological attraction and forms part of the Bawangling area of Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park. Dense tropical forest, mountain streams, waterfalls, giant trees, vines and complex forest ecosystems make it one of western Hainan's premier nature destinations. The scenic area is currently officially listed as a National 3A Tourist Attraction.
Bawangling is internationally significant because it is the only remaining wild habitat of the Hainan gibbon, one of the world's rarest primates. An official Hainan update in March 2026 reported 42 individuals, all living in the Bawangling area. Ordinary tourists should not expect to encounter gibbons on standard visitor trails; their habitats are strictly protected and conservation takes priority over wildlife tourism.
Qizi Bay Tourist Resort
Qizi Bay Tourist Resort (棋子湾旅游度假区) is the leading coastal destination in Changjiang. Its long shoreline combines sandy beaches, reefs, weathered rocks and relatively undeveloped coastal scenery, making it particularly popular for sunset photography and western Hainan road trips.
A major update came in February 2026, when the Hainan Provincial Department of Tourism, Culture, Radio, Television and Sports officially recognized Qizi Bay as a Provincial-Level Tourist Resort. This is now a confirmed designation rather than merely a development target.
Wangxia Lihuali Cultural Tourism Area
Wangxia Lihuali Cultural Tourism Area (王下乡·黎花里) represents the cultural side of Changjiang. Wangxia Township is surrounded by tropical mountains and traditional Li communities, and tourism development connects villages, traditional boat-shaped houses, Li songs, handicrafts, food and rainforest landscapes.
The area is especially suitable for experiencing Li pottery, Li brocade, traditional architecture and village culture. Recent provincial tourism activities continue to use Wangxia and Lihuali as important locations for rainforest and Li cultural experiences.
Emperor Cave and Nanyao River
Emperor Cave (皇帝洞) and the Nanyao River Ten-Mile Gallery (南尧河十里画廊) form one of Changjiang's most impressive inland landscape combinations. The cave is set within the mountainous Wangxia area, while the surrounding river valley features dramatic karst peaks, cliffs and forested scenery.
Changjiang's official tourism promotion places the two together on its major rainforest and Li-culture routes, combining cave exploration with the Nanyao River's karst landscape and nearby traditional communities.
Haiwei National Wetland Park
Haiwei National Wetland Park (海尾国家湿地公园) protects an important freshwater wetland ecosystem in western Hainan and is particularly valuable for birdwatching, environmental education and wetland conservation. Monitoring has recorded numerous protected bird species, while recent restoration projects have focused on vegetation recovery, ecological monitoring and environmental education.
The park reopened to visitors in October 2025 after ecological restoration work, making it once again a practical stop on a Changjiang nature itinerary.
Shayutang Fishing Village
Shayutang Village (沙渔塘村) is a coastal fishing community in Haiwei Town that became widely known after appearing as a filming location for the Chinese television program Back to Field. The village combines fishing-community lanes, beaches, coastal sunsets and relaxed seaside life, and has become one of Changjiang's most popular non-A-rated tourism destinations.
It is particularly suitable for travelers seeking a less commercialized Hainan experience, including beach walks, coastal photography and traditional fishing-village atmosphere.
Kapok Flower Landscapes
Kapok flowers are one of Changjiang's signature seasonal landscapes. From roughly January through March, brilliant red kapok blossoms appear beside rivers, terraces, villages and mountains, creating some of western Hainan's most recognizable spring scenery. Provincial tourism authorities continue to organize dedicated kapok-season activities in Changjiang.
The areas around Qicha Town (七叉镇) and villages along the Changhua River are especially associated with kapok photography. The combination of red flowers, terraced fields and green mountains has become one of the county's strongest seasonal tourism images.
🏛️ Historical and Rural Attractions
Changjiang's tourism is not limited to rainforest and beaches. The Changhua Ancient City area (昌化故城) reflects the long history of western Hainan, while Junling King Temple (峻灵王庙) is closely associated with local religious traditions and the historical journey of the Song Dynasty scholar Su Shi. Changjiang's current tourism routes specifically include Junling King Temple as an important stop for visitors tracing Dongpo cultural heritage.
Agricultural tourism is another characteristic feature. Orchids, mangoes and other tropical crops are increasingly combined with rural tourism and educational experiences. Both Hefeng Orchid Expo Park and Juyuan Flower Expo Park are officially rated National 2A Tourist Attractions, while orchid exhibitions continue to feature in Changjiang's 2026 tourism calendar.

Best Attractions by Travel Interest
For first-time visitors, the strongest combination is Bawangling + Qizi Bay + Wangxia Lihuali, which represents Changjiang's three essential tourism themes: rainforest, coastline and Li culture.
Nature and wildlife travelers should prioritize Bawangling and Haiwei Wetland Park, while photographers will find Qizi Bay sunsets, kapok season and the Nanyao River landscape particularly rewarding. Cultural travelers can spend more time around Wangxia, Changhua and Junling King Temple, while families and student groups can add the orchid parks and agricultural experiences. Changjiang's official tourism promotion increasingly packages these resources into self-drive routes linking mountains, rainforest, ethnic villages and the coast.
