Zunyi (遵义) is best known as one of China’s most important revolutionary-history destinations, but the wider prefecture offers far more than the Zunyi Conference Site (遵义会议会址). Its attractions extend from the UNESCO-listed Hailongtun Tusi Fortress (海龙屯土司遗址) and the mountain pass of Loushan Pass (娄山关) to Maotai Town (茅台镇), ancient settlements along the Chishui River and the waterfalls, bamboo forests and red cliffs of Chishui Danxia (赤水丹霞).
The most efficient approach is to use central Zunyi as the starting point, then explore the surrounding areas in geographical clusters. The city centre and nearby heritage sites require two or three days, while Maotai, Tucheng and Chishui should be treated as a separate western extension rather than rushed day trips.
Best Time to Visit Zunyi
Zunyi has a humid subtropical monsoon climate with relatively mild winters, warm summers and abundant rainfall. Its annual average temperature generally ranges from 13°C to 18°C, and the region is usually cooler in summer than neighbouring Chongqing. Rain can occur throughout the year, particularly from late spring into summer.
| Travel Period |
Conditions and Recommended Experiences |
| March–May |
Mild temperatures, fresh vegetation and comfortable conditions for Hailongtun, Loushan Pass and countryside visits |
| June–August |
Green mountain scenery, powerful waterfalls, bamboo forests and summer retreats; expect rain and larger visitor numbers |
| September–November |
Generally comfortable for historical walking tours, Chishui road trips and outdoor cultural sites |
| December–February |
Fewer visitors and a quieter atmosphere for museums and revolutionary-history tours, although mountain areas can be cold and damp |
Spring and autumn provide the most balanced weather. Summer is particularly attractive for caves, forests, waterfalls and mountain resorts, but travellers should carry rain protection and allow for temporary weather-related changes.

Zunyi’s tourism authorities have promoted themed products centred on revolutionary history, the Chishui River, tea-growing countryside and regional ethnic culture. These themes provide a useful planning framework, but they should be adapted to the traveller’s available time rather than combined into an overloaded schedule.
Recommended Zunyi Routes
Two Days: Essential Zunyi
Day 1: Central Zunyi
Begin at the Zunyi Conference Site, continue through the related exhibition halls and former Red Army residences, and then visit the Zunyi Red Army Martyrs Cemetery (遵义红军烈士陵园). Finish with local food around Laosha Lane (捞沙巷) or the old-city commercial area.
Day 2: Hailongtun or Wujiang Village
Choose Hailongtun Tusi Fortress for history, archaeology and mountain walking, or choose Wujiang Village International Tourism Resort (乌江寨国际旅游度假区) for waterside architecture, folk activities and an evening light experience.
This program is suitable for a weekend visit but does not include Maotai or Chishui.
Three Days: History and Cultural Landscapes
Zunyi City – Hailongtun – Loushan Pass – Wujiang Village
Spend the first day in central Zunyi, use the second for Hailongtun and Loushan Pass, and devote the third to Wujiang Village. Hailongtun involves uphill walking, so it should not be combined with too many additional attractions on the same day.
Hailongtun is one of the three components of the UNESCO-listed Tusi Sites, preserving a fortified mountain settlement associated with the historical Tusi system of southwestern China.
Four to Five Days: Zunyi and Maotai
Zunyi City – Hailongtun – Gouba and Huamao – Maotai Town
After exploring central Zunyi and Hailongtun, travel southwest to the Gouba Conference Site (苟坝会议会址) and Huamao Village (花茂村). Continue to Maotai Town for the Chishui River landscape, traditional distilling culture and the Chinese Liquor Culture City (中国酒文化城).
This route is suitable for travellers interested in revolutionary history, rural development and Chinese baijiu culture. Visitors should remember that factory access and professional tasting programs normally require advance arrangements.
Six to Seven Days: Zunyi and the Chishui River
Zunyi – Hailongtun – Maotai – Tucheng – Chishui
This is the most complete first-time Zunyi itinerary. After visiting the city and Hailongtun, continue west through Maotai and Tucheng Ancient Town (土城古镇) before spending two or three days in Chishui.
Tucheng is closely associated with the Four Crossings of the Chishui River (四渡赤水) campaign and contains the corresponding memorial museum. The Chishui section then shifts the focus from history to waterfalls, bamboo forests and Danxia landforms.
Eight to Ten Days: Complete Zunyi Circuit
Zunyi City – Hailongtun – Loushan Pass – Shuanghe Cave – Wujiang Village – Gouba – Maotai – Tucheng – Chishui
This program combines most of Zunyi’s major tourism themes. It is best arranged with a private vehicle because the attractions lie in different counties and public transport between individual scenic areas is limited.
Two full days should be retained for Chishui rather than treating the region as a single attraction. The Chishui component of the UNESCO-listed China Danxia property includes spectacular red cliffs, valleys, waterfalls and subtropical forests.
How to Get to Zunyi
By High-Speed Train
Zunyi Railway Station (遵义站) is the most convenient arrival point for most visitors travelling from Guiyang, Chongqing, Chengdu and other cities on the high-speed railway network. From the station, taxis, ride-hailing services and public transport provide access to the main urban districts.
Travellers heading directly toward Tongzi and Loushan Pass may also use stations farther north, depending on the train schedule. Railway tickets and current departures should be checked through the official Railway 12306 platform.
By Air
Zunyi is served by two airports:
Zunyi Xinzhou Airport (遵义新舟机场) is the principal airport for central Zunyi. Its official public-transport information lists an airport route connecting Xinzhou Airport with the high-speed railway station and urban passenger-transport facilities.
Zunyi Maotai Airport (遵义茅台机场) is closer to Renhuai and Maotai Town and can be useful for itineraries focusing on liquor culture or the western part of the prefecture. Flight destinations and frequencies vary by season, so an itinerary should not be finalized before confirming the operating schedule.
For most international travellers, flying or taking a high-speed train to Guiyang or Chongqing and continuing to Zunyi is often easier than relying on a direct flight.
Transportation within Zunyi
Central City Transport
The Zunyi Conference heritage area is compact enough to explore partly on foot. Taxis, ride-hailing vehicles and local buses are convenient for travelling between the railway station, hotels, the old city and the Red Army Martyrs Cemetery.
Walking is often faster around the Zunyi Conference Site and Laosha Lane because central streets may become congested during holidays.
Private Car or Driver
A private vehicle is the most practical choice for Hailongtun, Loushan Pass, Gouba, Maotai, Tucheng and Chishui. It reduces waiting time and allows the itinerary to combine villages, memorial sites and natural attractions that do not have convenient direct public connections.
A driver is particularly valuable for the Chishui River route, where mountain roads, small towns and dispersed scenic areas make a fixed public-transport schedule restrictive.
Self-Driving
Self-driving is suitable for experienced motorists. Expressways connect Zunyi with Guiyang, Chongqing and its principal counties, but the final approaches to some attractions include mountain roads, tunnels, sharp bends and narrow local sections.
Avoid driving late at night, especially during rain or fog. Parking can be limited near popular old towns and heritage sites, while some resorts require visitors to transfer to internal shuttle vehicles.
Reservations and Admission
The Zunyi Conference Memorial Museum and its associated sites are generally free to visit, but real-name reservations are required. The museum has also adjusted daytime and evening opening hours at different times of the year, so visitors should use its official website or WeChat account to confirm the current schedule before arrival.
Many red-tourism sites are free, but free admission does not necessarily mean that visitors can enter without registration. Carry the original passport or identity document used for the reservation.
Paid attractions such as Hailongtun, Wujiang Village and Chishui’s natural scenic areas may use separate entrance tickets, internal sightseeing vehicles and timed performances. During summer and national holidays, reserve accommodation and major attractions in advance.
Where to Stay
| Area |
Best For |
Accommodation Advice |
| Honghuagang District (红花岗区) |
Zunyi Conference Site, old-city food and first-time visitors |
Most convenient area for a short city stay |
| Huichuan District (汇川区) |
Modern hotels, business facilities and access toward Hailongtun |
Quieter than the old city and suitable for drivers |
| Xinpu New District (新蒲新区) |
Newer hotels and access to the airport and railway networks |
Suitable for business groups and late arrivals |
| Wujiang Village |
Evening performances and waterside atmosphere |
Stay inside the resort to avoid returning after the night program |
| Renhuai or Maotai Town |
Liquor culture and Chishui River experiences |
Renhuai has broader hotel services; Maotai offers more atmosphere |
| Tucheng Ancient Town |
Long March heritage and a slower town experience |
Small guesthouses and local hotels dominate |
| Chishui City |
Danxia, waterfalls and bamboo forests |
Better restaurant and hotel choice than isolated scenic entrances |
Central Zunyi is the most practical base for the conference site, Hailongtun and Loushan Pass, but it should not be used for repeated day trips to Chishui. Staying in Chishui for at least two nights saves substantial driving time.
Food and Local Experiences
Zunyi cuisine is known for strong, savoury and spicy flavours. Popular local dishes include Zunyi mutton rice noodles (遵义羊肉粉), tofu noodles (豆花面), duck-stream cold noodles (鸭溪凉粉), spicy chicken, fermented tofu and various Guizhou-style hotpots.
The old city and Laosha Lane offer the greatest concentration of snacks, but travellers should also try smaller neighbourhood restaurants away from the most crowded tourist streets.
Maotai tasting should be arranged responsibly. Avoid combining alcohol tasting with driving, and do not purchase high-priced bottles from unofficial roadside sellers or individuals claiming to have rare factory connections.
Practical Travel Tips
Wear non-slip walking shoes. Hailongtun, Loushan Pass, cave areas and waterfall paths involve stairs, slopes and wet surfaces.
Carry rain protection. Zunyi is humid and rainfall can begin unexpectedly, particularly from late spring through summer.
Allow enough time for Chishui. The major waterfalls and Danxia sites are dispersed and cannot be visited properly in a few hours.
Check performance schedules. Wujiang Village and The Great Turning Point (伟大转折) may have seasonal or date-specific performances.
Respect memorial sites. Keep voices low, follow photography restrictions and avoid treating historical exhibits as ordinary entertainment backgrounds.
Prepare for cave temperatures. Shuanghe Cave and other underground attractions can feel cool and damp even during summer.
Avoid overpacking each day. A museum, Hailongtun and Loushan Pass on the same day would leave insufficient time for interpretation and rest.

Zunyi Tours with Yaso Trip
A Zunyi Tour with Yaso Trip can combine revolutionary history, UNESCO heritage, Chishui River culture, traditional towns, regional food and Danxia landscapes without unnecessary backtracking.
Private programs can include English-speaking guides, dedicated vehicles, high-speed railway and airport transfers, museum reservations, Maotai cultural visits, Chishui accommodation and customized meals.
For most first-time international visitors, a four- to six-day journey combining central Zunyi, Hailongtun, Maotai or Wujiang Village, and Chishui provides the best balance of history, culture and natural scenery.
