Located in the north of Guizhou province, Zunyi is the second largest city in Guizhou, about 2 hours' drive from Guiyang. Zunyi is an important transit station for those who wish to go further into northern Guizhou. The reason why Zunyi is best known to the Chinese people is that in January 1935, the political bureau of the central committee held a famous Zunyi meeting here, and Zunyi was also included in the first batch of 24 famous historical and cultural cities published by the state council. Zunyi perfectly combines the spirit of communism with the natural scenery, showing a beautiful picture to the world. The famous Chinese revolutionary culture is one of the characteristics of Zunyi, which attracts many tourists every year, especially domestic tourists. In addition to a number of historical sites including Zunyi Meeting Site, Zunyi is also rich in natural resources, such as Chishui Danxia Landform, Chishui Grand Waterfall and many other forest parks, a perfect combination of natural resources and historical culture. In addition, Maotai, which is known as "China Spirits", is produced in Maotai Town of Renhuai City, northwest of Zunyi. You can also experience tea culture at Fenggang Tea sea and Meitan Tea Sea.
Zunyi City (遵义市) is one of Guizhou’s most diverse destinations, combining revolutionary history, UNESCO World Heritage, Danxia landforms, waterfalls, caves, ancient towns, liquor culture, tea plantations and Gelao ethnic traditions. The destination is often promoted through the theme “Red Heritage and Beautiful Zunyi,” reflecting its combination of historical importance and green mountain landscapes.
Zunyi was included in China’s first group of National Historical and Cultural Cities in 1982. It is also home to two internationally recognized heritage systems: Chishui is one of the six components of the UNESCO-listed China Danxia, while Hailongtun Fortress forms part of the UNESCO-listed Tusi Sites.
Zunyi Attractions Overview
Zunyi’s tourism resources can be divided into four main regions.
Central Zunyi is the centre of revolutionary history, with the Zunyi Conference Site, Loushan Pass, Gouba Conference Site and other Long March heritage. The city centre is suitable for museums, historical walking tours and educational programs.
Western Zunyi follows the Chishui River through Renhuai, Xishui and Chishui. This region combines Maotai liquor culture, historic Red Army crossing sites, ancient towns, waterfalls, bamboo forests and the red cliffs of Chishui Danxia.
Northern and northeastern Zunyi includes Suiyang, Tongzi, Zheng’an, Daozhen and Wuchuan. Its main attractions are cave systems, forest reserves, canyons, summer resorts and Gelao cultural experiences.
Eastern and southeastern Zunyi is dominated by tea country and the Wujiang River. Meitan, Fenggang and Yuqing are known for tea plantations, tea culture, lake scenery and rural tourism, while Bozhou and Xinpu contain Wujiang Village and Yunmentun.
The Chishui Danxia Tourist Area has held national 5A status since 2020. Guizhou’s official 2026 directory also lists a broad network of nationally rated attractions across Zunyi’s districts, cities and counties.

Attraction names and nationally rated scenic areas were cross-checked against Guizhou’s official 2026 tourism directories. The broader regional selection also follows official Zunyi routes covering revolutionary heritage, the Chishui River, tea country and Gelao cultural areas.
How to Plan a Zunyi Attractions Tour
For a first visit, allow at least three to four days for central Zunyi, Hailongtun, Loushan Pass and either Wujiang Village or Maotai Town. A complete journey incorporating Chishui normally requires six to eight days, because Chishui lies far west of the central urban area and contains several separate scenic zones.
A practical regional structure is:
Central History: Zunyi Conference Site – Hailongtun – Loushan Pass – Gouba Conference Site
Chishui River Heritage: Maotai Town – Tucheng Ancient Town – Chishui Danxia – Bing’an Ancient Town
Caves and Summer Landscapes: Tongzi – Suiyang – Shuanghe Cave – Qingxi Gorge
Tea and Rural Culture: Meitan – Fenggang – Yuqing
Gelao Culture: Zheng’an – Daozhen – Wuchuan
Spring and autumn offer comfortable conditions for historical sites and hiking. Summer is particularly suitable for Chishui’s waterfalls, bamboo forests, Suiyang’s caves and the cooler northern counties. During periods of heavy rain, access to caves, gorges, waterfalls and forest roads should be checked before departure.
Zunyi’s attractions are widely dispersed, so private transport or a customized vehicle is more practical than relying entirely on public buses. Travelers should avoid combining central Zunyi, Maotai and Chishui in a single rushed day; each tourism region deserves its own overnight base.
