Tongren Festivals And Activities

Tongren (铜仁) is one of Guizhou’s richest destinations for ethnic festivals and living folk traditions. Located in the Wuling Mountain region at the meeting point of Guizhou, Hunan and Chongqing, the city is home to 29 ethnic groups, including the Tujia, Miao, Dong and Gelao peoples. Different cultural influences from western Hunan, eastern Sichuan and northeastern Guizhou have blended here, creating distinctive forms of dragon dancing, Nuo opera, lantern theatre, folk singing, embroidery, wood carving and village celebrations.

Tongren’s festival calendar is especially active from the Chinese New Year period through early summer. The Gelao Maolong Festival in Shiqian, the Fire Dragon Festival in Dejiang, the Miao April Eighth Festival in Songtao and Dong gathering festivals in Yuping are among its most representative ethnic celebrations. Traditional events are increasingly joined by newer cultural brands such as Yinjiang Village Opera, the Fanjingshan Football League, matcha conventions and mountain-sports competitions.

Many festival dates follow the Chinese lunar calendar and therefore change each year. Others are modern tourism, sports or exhibition events whose schedules are announced separately. Travellers should always confirm the current year’s program before booking transport and accommodation.

The Cultural Character of Tongren Festivals

Tongren’s festivals are closely connected with agricultural seasons, ancestor worship, prayers for favourable weather, community relationships and the transmission of ethnic identity. They are not simply staged performances: villagers often make costumes, dragon lanterns, ritual objects and festival foods themselves, while local singers, dancers, craftspeople and intangible-heritage inheritors remain central participants.

Dragon culture is particularly prominent. In Shiqian, colourful Maolong, or hairy dragons, parade through the streets during the Spring Festival season. In Dejiang, fire dragons dance beneath showers of sparks during the Lantern Festival. Along the Wujiang River, dragon-boat races remain an important part of the Duanwu Festival. These traditions express prayers for peace, harvests, health and prosperity.

Music and theatre are equally important. Miao flower drums, Dong antiphonal singing, Tujia hand-waving dances, Sinan lantern theatre and Nuo opera appear at festivals throughout the prefecture. Yinjiang’s Village Opera combines Nuo dance, Mamadeng lantern performance, folk songs and township competitions, turning local residents into both performers and audiences.

Zhongnan Gate Spring Festival Activities

Zhongnan Gate Historical and Cultural Tourism Area (中南门历史文化旅游区) in Bijiang District is Tongren’s principal urban festival venue. During Chinese New Year and the Lantern Festival, the old town commonly hosts lantern installations, dragon and lion dances, folk performances, intangible-heritage markets, traditional games, street food and evening entertainment.

The program changes annually, but recent celebrations have included a large New Year carnival, Nuo performances, lantern-riddle activities and interactive night events. Zhongnan Gate also presents regular weekend and holiday exhibitions of Miao embroidery, local food, lantern dancing, four-sided drums and Nuo opera.

Gelao Maolong Festival in Shiqian

The Gelao Maolong Festival (仡佬毛龙节) is one of Tongren’s most important traditional festivals. It is held during the first lunar month, commonly around the eleventh day, when dragon teams from villages and communities gather in Shiqian County for processions, blessings, competitions and intangible-heritage performances.

The Maolong is built from bamboo and colourful materials and reflects both Gelao bamboo-ancestor traditions and Chinese dragon symbolism. The festival was included in China’s first national intangible cultural heritage list in 2006. In 2026, 80 Maolong teams and nine heritage-performance groups participated in the county celebration.

Gelao Respect-for-the-Bird Festival

The Gelao Respect-for-the-Bird Festival (仡佬敬雀节), also translated as the Eagle Worship Festival, is held in Gelao villages of Shiqian, especially around Yaoshang Village. Traditionally observed on the first day of the second lunar month, it centres on rituals expressing respect for nature, ancestors and birds.

Contemporary celebrations may include Maolong dancing, Bengbeng drums, folk singing, bamboo-pole dances, traditional food, craft exhibitions and community competitions. It is recognized as a provincial-level intangible cultural heritage tradition.

Dejiang Fire Dragon Festival

The Dejiang Fire Dragon Festival (德江火龙节) is held around the Lantern Festival. Dragon dancers carry long lantern dragons through streets while residents direct fireworks and sparks toward the procession. The dramatic custom is believed to drive away misfortune and bring prosperity for the coming year.

The event requires strict safety management because of the fireworks and dense crowds. In 2026, the national-level heritage celebration once again transformed central Dejiang into a large fire-dragon performance area.

Sinan Shangyuan Celebrations

Sinan County preserves several traditional New Year customs associated with Shangyuan, the Lantern Festival period. The program may begin with folk parades in the first lunar month and continue through the traditional Sandbar Outing on the fifteenth day (上元游沙洲).

Recent celebrations have combined dragon and lion processions, Sinan lantern dancing, local legends, historic-character parades and intangible-heritage performances. The county’s lantern theatre is itself a nationally recognized intangible cultural heritage tradition.

Jiulong Village Dragon Raises Its Head Festival

On the second day of the second lunar month, Jiulong Village (九龙村) in Bijiang District celebrates the traditional Dragon Raises Its Head Festival (龙抬头). Activities commonly include village dragon dancing, communal meals, folk performances and evening gatherings.

This is more rural and community-oriented than the large urban events at Zhongnan Gate, making it suitable for travellers seeking a village festival atmosphere. Annual programs should be confirmed through Bijiang tourism announcements.

Miao and Dong Ethnic Festivals

Miao April Eighth Festival in Songtao

The Miao April Eighth Festival (苗族四月八), also called the Hero Yanu Festival (英雄亚努节) in Songtao, is celebrated on the eighth day of the fourth lunar month. The principal public celebration is held at Miao King City (苗王城).

The festival commemorates the Miao cultural hero Yanu and incorporates prayers for favourable weather, good harvests and community wellbeing. Major activities include ceremonial horn blowing, four-sided drum performances, a large silver-crown costume parade, Miao singing, heritage skills, traditional games and craft markets. In 2026, the celebration was held on May 24 and attracted Miao communities and visitors from the Guizhou–Hunan–Chongqing border region.

For photographers, the silver-crown parade is a major highlight. Visitors should nevertheless request permission before taking close-up portraits and should not touch costumes, jewellery or ritual objects without consent.

Dong Ganao Gatherings in Yuping

Ganao gatherings (赶坳) are traditional Dong social events held at mountain gathering grounds in Yuping Dong Autonomous County. Historically, people gathered to sing, meet friends and socialize, while contemporary programs may include antiphonal folk singing, dancing, sports competitions, Dong oil tea and rural markets.

The Tieji溪 Heli gathering ground is one of the best-known sites. In 2024, its “Tuwangwu” gathering included singing, dance and basketball competitions, while village stalls served Dong snacks and oil tea. The exact date varies by gathering ground and year, with some events connected to the traditional sixth day of the sixth lunar month.

Summer Festivals and Water-Based Events

Dragon Boat Festivals along the Wujiang River

Dragon-boat racing is an important Duanwu Festival tradition in western Tongren. Sinan County has organized consecutive annual races, while Yanhe Tujia Autonomous County is known for competitive races and an unusual upstream sprint on the Wujiang River.

The 2025 Yanhe program included team parades, a dragon-eye-dotting ceremony, mass racing displays and a 500-metre upstream competition. Exact courses, spectator zones and traffic controls are announced shortly before the festival.

Dejiang Water Dragon Festival

Held around the sixth day of the sixth lunar month, the Dejiang Water Dragon Festival (德江水龙节) is a summer counterpart to the county’s Fire Dragon Festival. Participants splash water, dance with dragons and join public celebrations associated with prayers for rain, health and good harvests.

The event has developed into a large summer tourism program combining traditional ritual, water play, performances and local products. Visitors should protect cameras and phones and wear quick-drying clothing.

Nuo Heritage Performances

Nuo opera and masked ritual theatre appear throughout Tongren, particularly in Dejiang, Yinjiang and Sinan. During the May Day holiday, Tongren has organized the Nuo Heritage Night Tour (非遗夜游·快傩铜行) at Zhongnan Gate, bringing regional Nuo troupes together for parades, mask displays, dancing and mask-painting activities.

Unlike fixed traditional festivals, this is a curated tourism event and may not use the same name or dates every year.

Autumn, Harvest and Contemporary Cultural Events

Harvest festivals are held in rural communities across Tongren during September and October. Programs commonly include agricultural-product markets, traditional food preparation, farming-skill demonstrations and village performances. Shiqian has held county-level Farmers’ Harvest Festival programs featuring traditional tea-oil pressing and other farming crafts, while villages in Bijiang have organized rice-themed harvest celebrations.

During the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holiday, Fanjingshan, Yunshe Village, Zhaisha Dong Village and Zhushagu Ancient Town commonly organize temporary performances, night markets, bonfire activities and non-heritage entertainment. These are holiday programs rather than fixed annual folk festivals, so their content changes from year to year.

New Festival and Event Brands

Yinjiang Village Opera

Yinjiang Village Opera (印江村戏) is a contemporary cultural competition built around traditional village performance. Townships present Nuo dance, lantern theatre, Mamadeng, money-stick dancing and local songs in a competitive stage format. Performers range from children to elderly villagers, giving the event a strong community character.

Rounds may be staged during the Spring Festival, summer tourism season or other holiday periods rather than on one permanent date.

Fanjingshan Football League

The Fanjingshan Football League, known as Fan Super (梵超), is a citywide sports-and-tourism competition involving teams from Tongren’s districts and counties. The 2025–2026 season ran from September to January and included 53 matches, with cultural performances and local-product promotions added around selected games.

Fanjingshan Climbing Competition

The annual Fanjingshan Climbing Competition (梵净山登山大赛) combines endurance sport with World Heritage scenery. The eighth competition was held in March 2026 and attracted more than 2,000 athletes to a demanding mountain course. Participation requires separate registration and is very different from a normal scenic-area visit.

Tongren Matcha Conference

The Tongren Matcha Conference (铜仁抹茶大会) is an industry, exhibition and tea-culture event generally held in Jiangkou. Activities may include industry forums, product exhibitions, tea-garden visits, matcha markets, Song-style tea demonstrations and new-product experiences.

The 2026 conference was held from May 31 to June 1 and included an industry exhibition and study visits to the local matcha supply chain.

Tongren Festival Travel Tips

Confirm lunar dates carefully. Miao April Eighth, the Maolong Festival, the Respect-for-the-Bird Festival, Dragon Raises Its Head and the Water Dragon Festival follow the lunar calendar. Their Gregorian dates change every year.

Use official annual announcements. Village Opera, Fan Super, matcha events, harvest celebrations and holiday performances may change venues or schedules.

Book accommodation early. Hotels near Miao King City, Shiqian County centre, Dejiang and Zhongnan Gate may sell out during major events. Booking one or two weeks ahead is sensible, while larger holiday periods may require earlier reservations.

Arrive before the main parade. Road closures and crowd controls may begin before the official opening ceremony. Staying locally on the previous night is often more practical than attempting a same-day transfer.

Prepare for fireworks and noise. The Dejiang Fire Dragon Festival is extremely loud and visually intense. Children, travellers with respiratory problems and people sensitive to smoke should remain in controlled viewing areas.

Respect local participation. Communal dances and meals may welcome visitors, but ceremonies, ancestor rituals and offerings should be observed quietly unless organizers explicitly invite participation.

Ask before photographing people. This is especially important during Miao costume parades, Gelao rituals and private village gatherings.
