Tongren city is located in the eastern part of the Guizhou plateau, the hinterland of Wuling mountain area. Due to its unique charm of plateau landscape and winding path leading to seclusion, Tongren attracts many domestic tourists, and there is a peak named Mount Fanjing in Wuling mountain range, which is full of mysterious color and magnificent. Tongren faces mountain on one side and water on the other three sides. Wujiang river passes through Shiqian, Sinan, Dejiang and Yanhe counties, forming "Baili Wujiang Gallery". Along the bank, there are magnificent Liulong Mountain karst cave group and Nine-dragon Cave Scenic Area. Besides, Tongren also has Ming Paradise(大明边城), Loushan Ancient Village(楼上古寨), the ancient commercial port cultural block of Zhongnan gate and other cultural and historical tourist attractions. Tongren is also a famous old revolutionary base. In 1934, He Long and Guan Xiangying founded the eastern Guizhou revolutionary base in Tongren, one of the eight red bases in China before the red army's long march. There are Former Residence of Zhou Yiqun(周逸群故居), Former Site of Revolutionary Committee in East Guizhou Special District, Fengxiangxi Conference Site(枫香溪会议会址) and other provincial cultural protection units.
Tongren City (铜仁市) is one of Guizhou’s richest tourism destinations, with 11,612 identified tourism resources, the second-highest total in the province. Its appeal extends far beyond Fanjingshan: visitors can explore deep karst caves, river canyons, historic streets, mining heritage, hot springs, traditional villages and the living cultures of the Tujia, Miao, Dong and Gelao communities.
Tongren’s tourism identity can be summarized as “climb the mountain, enjoy the hot springs and explore the ancient city.” Fanjingshan provides the international ecological landmark; Zhongnanmen represents the urban historical core; Zhusha Ancient Town preserves industrial heritage; while Shiqian, Sinan and the Wujiang River region are known for hot springs, geological landscapes and slower wellness-oriented travel. The municipal tourism structure now centres on Fanjingshan and Zhongnanmen, supported by Zhusha Ancient Town, Miaowangcheng, Shiqian Hot Spring and attractions across every county.
Main Tourism Regions
Fanjingshan and Jiangkou County form Tongren’s primary nature-tourism region. Fanjingshan is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage property and a national 5A attraction, distinguished by its ancient metamorphic geology, vertical forest zones and endemic species such as the Guizhou snub-nosed monkey and Fanjingshan fir. Nearby Yamu Gully, Yunshe Village and Zhaisha Dong Village add forest recreation and ethnic-village experiences.
Central Tongren, covering Bijiang and Wanshan, is the most convenient cultural base. Zhongnanmen preserves a 600-year-old urban quarter with Ming, Qing and Republican-era architecture, while Zhusha Ancient Town transforms the former Wanshan mercury-mining district into an industrial-heritage destination. Jiulong Cave, Tianshengqiao and the Jinjiang River add natural scenery close to the city.
Shiqian and Sinan are the main hot-spring and wellness areas. Shiqian Ancient Hot Spring has more than 400 years of development history and is associated with naturally warm mineral water that can traditionally be used for both bathing and drinking. Sinan combines the Wujiang River, karst stone forests, traditional settlements and modern hot-spring resorts.
Songtao, Yuping, Yinjiang, Dejiang and Yanhe provide the strongest minority-culture, red-history and river-canyon experiences. Miaowangcheng presents Miao architecture and customs; Yuping is known for Dong culture and flute-making; Yinjiang contains Fanjingshan’s western cultural landscape and the Muhuang meeting heritage; while Dejiang and Yanhe preserve Nuo, Tujia and Wujiang River traditions.

How to Plan a Tongren Attractions Tour
A first visit should allow at least three days. Spend one full day on Fanjingshan, one day around Zhongnanmen and Wanshan, and one day at either Shiqian Hot Spring, Tongren Grand Canyon or a minority-cultural destination.
For a more complete five-to-seven-day journey, divide the trip into clear regional sections:
Fanjingshan Region: Fanjingshan – Yamu Gully – Yunshe Village – Zhaisha Dong Village
Central Cultural Region: Zhongnanmen – Jiulong Cave – Zhusha Ancient Town – Jinjiang River
Miao and Canyon Region: Tongren Grand Canyon – Miaowangcheng – Qianlong Cave
Hot-Spring and Wujiang Region: Shiqian Ancient Hot Spring – Loushang Ancient Village – Sinan Stone Forest – Jiutian Hot Spring – Wujiang Gallery
Red-History Extension: Muhuang – Kunniushan – Fengxiangxi
Spring and autumn offer the best balance for mountain walking, historic streets and village visits. Summer is well suited to waterfalls, caves and river gorges but brings heavier rain, while winter is particularly suitable for hot springs and quieter cultural travel. Attractions are widely dispersed, so private transport is usually more practical than using Tongren city centre as the base for repeated long-distance day trips.
