Qiannan Bouyei and Miao Autonomous Prefecture (黔南布依族苗族自治州) occupies southern Guizhou between Guiyang and Guangxi. Its landscape ranges from humid karst forests and turquoise rivers in Libo County (荔波县) to astronomical research facilities in Pingtang County (平塘县), Shui villages in Sandu County (三都县), tea mountains around Duyun City (都匀市) and warmer river valleys in Luodian County (罗甸县).
Qiannan currently promotes the destination through the “Xiao–Tian–Ma” tourism concept (小天马): Xiaoqikong (小七孔), the China Sky Eye or FAST (中国天眼) and Guizhou Village Horse Racing (贵州村马). These three attractions represent the prefecture’s strongest combination of natural heritage, science education and ethnic culture.
Although the three destinations are promoted together, they are not located in one compact scenic zone. A comfortable tour normally requires four to five days, private transport and confirmation of the Village Horse Racing schedule. Trying to visit Xiaoqikong, FAST and Sandu in three rushed days leaves too much time on the road and too little time for meaningful experiences.

Essential Experiences
Libo Xiaoqikong
Xiaoqikong Scenic Area (荔波小七孔景区) is Qiannan’s principal natural attraction. It belongs to the Libo component of the UNESCO-listed South China Karst, recognized as a world reference landscape for cone karst, enclosed depressions, sinking streams and underground river systems.
Its main sights include Wolong Pool (卧龙潭), Yuanyang Lake (鸳鸯湖), Cuigu Waterfall (翠谷瀑布), the Water Forest (水上森林), the Sixty-Eight-Level Waterfalls (六十八级跌水瀑布) and the historic Seven-Arched Bridge (小七孔古桥).
Allow at least five hours inside the scenic area. Entering through the West Gate usually creates a more comfortable, largely descending sightseeing sequence, while the East Gate is convenient for visitors staying near Daqikong or the eastern visitor centre. Internal sightseeing vehicles connect the main sections, but substantial walking remains necessary.
The nearby Daqikong Scenic Area (大七孔景区) has a broader river gorge, forest and natural bridge. It can be added on the same day only when the group starts early and has good mobility; otherwise, divide Xiaoqikong and Daqikong between separate half-days.
Maolan Karst Forest
Maolan National Nature Reserve (茂兰国家级自然保护区) offers a quieter and more ecological alternative to Xiaoqikong. Its combination of karst peaks, caves, underground streams and near-primeval forest is better suited to hikers, photographers and nature-study groups than to travelers seeking convenient sightseeing facilities.
Maolan requires a local vehicle or charter service, and some village roads and trail entrances are difficult to navigate independently. Use established routes and local guides rather than entering undeveloped forest or cave areas.
Yaoshan Ancient Village
Yaoshan Ancient Village (瑶山古寨) introduces the traditions of the White-Trouser Yao community. Cultural experiences may include traditional clothing, spinning and weaving, village architecture, performances and communal meals.
The village is close enough to Xiaoqikong for an evening visit, but an overnight stay provides more time to understand village life. Tourism facilities around Yaoshan and Mengliu Town combine accommodation, dining and cultural activities.
China Sky Eye and Kedu Astronomy Town
The Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope, commonly called FAST or the China Sky Eye, lies in a natural karst depression in Pingtang. The wider visitor experience normally begins in Kedu Astronomy Town (克度天文小镇) and includes astronomy exhibitions, science films and transport to an authorized observation platform.
FAST is a working scientific installation rather than a conventional theme attraction. Visitor access, observation times, security procedures and rules governing electronic equipment can change according to scientific operations and radio-quiet-zone requirements. Reserve through the current official system and follow all on-site instructions. Pingtang’s updated tourism planning integrates FAST with the astronomy town, nearby karst features and science-education facilities.
Allow most of one day for the complete experience. Do not combine a full FAST visit, the transfer from Libo and an evening Village Horse Racing event unless the schedule has been professionally coordinated.
Guizhou Village Horse Racing in Sandu
Guizhou Village Horse Racing (贵州村马) is based on the traditional equestrian culture of the Shui people in Sandu Shui Autonomous County (三都水族自治县). Events combine speed racing, traditional clothing, equestrian skills and festival activities.
Village Horse Racing is a scheduled event, not a guaranteed daily performance. The 2025 national invitational tournament formed part of Sandu’s Duan Festival tourism season and held several days of preliminary races and finals during the National Day holiday. Travelers must confirm the current calendar before building an itinerary around it.
When no major race is scheduled, Sandu still offers worthwhile cultural experiences through the Sandu Shui Museum (三都水族博物馆), ponytail-embroidery workshops, Shui villages and the Village Horse stable or performance facilities where prearranged demonstrations may be possible.
Best Time to Visit Qiannan
March to May
Spring brings fresh vegetation, comfortable temperatures and flowing waterfalls. It is suitable for Xiaoqikong, tea-country visits, village walks and Bouyei festivals. Rain becomes more frequent toward May, so waterproof footwear is useful.
June to August
Summer produces the greenest forests and strongest waterfalls, making it the most popular period for Libo and other water-based attractions. Qiannan has a warm, humid subtropical monsoon climate, with much of its rainfall occurring during the warmer season.
Summer also brings larger crowds, slippery trails and occasional thunderstorms or flood-related controls. Start Xiaoqikong early and avoid entering undeveloped rivers or caves after heavy rain.
September to November
Early autumn is one of the best periods for a complete Qiannan tour. Rain gradually decreases, visibility improves and conditions remain suitable for both outdoor scenery and cultural travel.
The Shui Duan Festival (水族端节) and related horse-racing activities often fall in autumn, but they follow the Shui calendar and occur on different dates in different communities. Confirm the annual program before booking.
December to February
Winter is quieter and suitable for Duyun, tea culture, local food and lower-elevation destinations. Forest scenery is less lush, while cold rain and damp conditions can make outdoor sightseeing feel colder than the temperature suggests.
Southern Luodian remains warmer than northern and higher parts of the prefecture because Qiannan’s elevation and climate vary significantly from north to south.
How Many Days Are Needed?
Three Days: Choose One Core Region
Three days are insufficient for a comfortable full “Xiao–Tian–Ma” journey. Use the time for one of these combinations:
Libo Nature Tour:
Libo – Xiaoqikong – Daqikong – Yaoshan Ancient Village – Maolan or departure
Science and Culture Tour:
Duyun – China Sky Eye – Sandu Shui Museum – confirmed Village Horse Racing event
Four Days: Compact Xiao–Tian–Ma Tour
Four days is the practical minimum when a Village Horse event is confirmed:
Day 1: Arrive in Libo and visit Yaoshan Ancient Village.
Day 2: Full-day Xiaoqikong visit and overnight in Libo.
Day 3: Transfer to Pingtang and visit the China Sky Eye; stay in Pingtang or Sandu.
Day 4: Visit Sandu’s Shui cultural sites and a scheduled Village Horse event before departing through Duyun.
This itinerary requires a private vehicle and disciplined timing. It does not leave much room for Maolan, Luodian or Duyun’s tea culture.
Five Days: Recommended First Tour
A five-day program provides a much better balance:
Day 1: Arrival in Libo
Arrive at Libo Railway Station (荔波站) and transfer to the county town, Xiaoqikong entrance area or Yaoshan. The Guiyang–Nanning High-Speed Railway has connected Libo directly with Guiyang and Guangxi since 2023; scenic-area transfer services operate from the station, although timetables should be checked for the travel date.
Spend the evening in Yaoshan or Libo town and keep the schedule light.
Day 2: Xiaoqikong
Enter early and devote the full day to the main water and forest landscapes. Stay near the scenic area for the easiest morning access, or return to Libo town for a broader restaurant selection.
Day 3: Libo–Pingtang
Transfer to Pingtang after breakfast. Visit Kedu Astronomy Town and the China Sky Eye science facilities. Stay in Kedu or Pingtang rather than continuing late at night to Sandu.
Day 4: Pingtang–Sandu
Continue to Sandu for the Shui Museum, a ponytail-embroidery experience and village culture. Attend Village Horse Racing only when a confirmed public event or arranged demonstration is available.
Day 5: Sandu–Duyun and Departure
Travel to Duyun for a short city walk, local food and a Duyun Maojian tea (都匀毛尖茶) experience before departing from Duyun East Railway Station (都匀东站) or continuing to Guiyang.
Six-to-Eight-Day In-Depth Tour
A deeper journey can follow:
Guiyang – Longli – Huishui – Duyun – Sandu – Pingtang – Luodian – Libo – Dushan – Guiyang or Guangxi
This route introduces Bouyei culture in Haohuahong Village (好花红村), tea culture around Duyun, Shui traditions in Sandu, astronomy in Pingtang, warm river-valley landscapes in Luodian and World Heritage karst in Libo.
The complete circuit is most suitable for private tours because some county-to-county public transport connections require transfers and do not align well with attraction opening times.
Transportation Planning
High-Speed Rail
The Guiyang–Nanning High-Speed Railway links Guiyang, Longli, Guiding, Duyun, Dushan and Libo with Guangxi. The line made Libo directly accessible by high-speed train, with the fastest initial service from Guiyang taking under one hour. Actual 2026 schedules vary, so train numbers and travel times should be checked on the official railway platform.
Duyun East Station is the strongest general gateway for central Qiannan, while Libo Station is best for Xiaoqikong and Yaoshan.
Air Travel
Libo has a small regional airport, but services and frequencies are more limited than high-speed rail. For most domestic travelers, Guiyang Airport plus high-speed rail or private transfer provides greater flexibility.
Local Transport
Ride-hailing and taxis work in Duyun and county towns but are unreliable for a multi-county itinerary. Use a private car, licensed charter vehicle or organized tour for Libo–Pingtang–Sandu travel.
The promoted “Xiao–Tian–Ma” circuit covers several hundred kilometres when scenic-area transfers are included. A self-drive or private-car journey should avoid late-night mountain driving and allow additional time for rain, roadworks and festival traffic.

Local Food to Try
In Duyun, look for Maojian tea, Maojian buns, rice noodles and Chongchong cake. Dushan County is known for its strongly flavoured shrimp-sour dishes, while Libo offers freshly sliced beef noodles, sour fish and Yao-style meals.
Pingtang jar fish, Sandu fish wrapped with chives, five-coloured sticky rice, Bouyei sour-soup fish and local horse-meat dishes are also representative regional foods. Travelers unfamiliar with fermented sour flavours should order small portions first.
Essential Travel Advice
Do not treat Village Horse Racing as a daily attraction. Confirm the race or festival schedule before finalizing hotels and transfers.
Reserve FAST in advance. Allow time for visitor registration, internal transportation and radio-quiet-zone procedures. Do not plan around unrestricted phone or camera use near the telescope.
Start Xiaoqikong early. Summer weekends and public holidays can be extremely busy. Staying near the entrance provides the best chance of entering before large tour groups.
Wear shoes with strong grip. Stone paths, forest walkways and waterfall areas remain wet even during clear weather. Lightweight rainwear is more practical than an umbrella.
Be cautious with swimming and paddling. Use only officially managed water activities with safety equipment. Water levels and currents can change rapidly after rainfall.
Respect village culture. Ask before photographing embroidery techniques, ceremonies, household interiors or children. Pay recognized artisans directly for workshops and handmade products.
Keep the itinerary geographically logical. The most efficient first-time route is generally:
Libo – Pingtang – Sandu – Duyun
Travelers arriving from Guiyang can reverse the sequence:
Duyun – Sandu – Pingtang – Libo – Guangxi or Guiyang
A well-planned Qiannan Tour with Yaso Trip should combine one full natural-landscape day, one science experience and one carefully arranged ethnic-cultural program. The prefecture is most rewarding when visitors do more than collect photographs—walking beside Libo’s emerald rivers, understanding how FAST studies the universe and meeting the Shui artisans and riders who keep local traditions alive.
