Kaili City (凯里市) is the capital of Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture (黔东南苗族侗族自治州) and the main transport gateway to the ethnic villages of southeastern Guizhou. Many travellers pass through Kaili on their way to Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village (西江千户苗寨), but the city deserves at least one or two days for its old neighbourhoods, sour-soup cuisine, embroidery markets and lively community culture.

The most rewarding Kaili journey should not be planned as a rushed checklist. A better approach is to combine three layers of experience: everyday city life, living Miao and Dong culture, and one or two surrounding villages. Two days are enough for the urban highlights and Xiasi Ancient Town (下司古镇), while three or four days allow time for quieter villages around Leishan.

How Many Days Do You Need in Kaili?

A one-day visit can introduce the city’s food and handicrafts, but it leaves little time to understand the surrounding village culture. Two days and one night is the most practical first visit. Travellers seeking quieter landscapes, morning mist and less commercialized communities should plan three days and two nights.

Best Time to Visit Kaili

Spring and Autumn

The most comfortable periods are generally March to May and September to November. Temperatures are suitable for walking, village visits and outdoor photography, while spring planting and autumn harvest activities add colour to the countryside.

Ethnic festivals do not always follow the Gregorian calendar, so travellers interested in Miao New Year, Lusheng celebrations or village ceremonies should confirm local dates separately.

Summer

From June to August, Kaili is warm, humid and considerably cooler than many lowland cities in southern China. Summer is popular for mountain escapes, but it is also the main rainy season. Carry a light raincoat and allow extra time for road journeys to mountain villages.

Rain can create atmospheric mist and cloud around the hills, but it may also cause slippery paths, poor visibility and slower driving conditions. Avoid tightly scheduled village transfers on days with heavy-rain warnings.

Winter

Winter is usually damp and chilly rather than severely cold. The combination of moisture and limited indoor heating can make the temperature feel lower than expected. Pack a warm waterproof jacket, comfortable shoes and clothing suitable for layering.

How to Get to Kaili

By High-Speed Train

Kaili South Railway Station (凯里南站) is the most convenient arrival point. High-speed trains connect Kaili with Guiyang and other cities along the Shanghai–Kunming railway corridor. Selected services between Guiyang North Railway Station and Kaili South take approximately 30–40 minutes, although the exact journey depends on the train.

Kaili South is outside the traditional city centre. Allow approximately 30–45 minutes to reach the Dashizi or Zhongbo area by taxi, depending on traffic and the location of your hotel.

By Air

Most visitors fly to Guiyang Longdongbao International Airport (贵阳龙洞堡国际机场) and continue by high-speed train or private vehicle. Some itineraries may also use regional airports in Qiandongnan, but flight frequency is more limited and may not be as convenient as the Guiyang connection.

Getting Around Kaili

Central Kaili is relatively compact, and taxis or ride-hailing services are convenient for most urban journeys. Public buses serve major residential and commercial districts, but they are less practical when carrying luggage or visiting several locations in one day.

Transport to rural villages is more complicated. Public services may be infrequent, and the final sections often involve winding mountain roads. A private car, rental vehicle or vehicle with driver is therefore the most efficient choice for Wudong, Baiyan, Langde and other villages outside the city.

Kaili has also expanded direct transport linking railway stations and tourism areas. A customized direct bus between Kaili South Railway Station and Xiasi Ancient Town began operating in March 2026, while the city has continued developing scenic-area shuttle and through-bus services. Timetables should be reconfirmed before departure.

How to Structure a Kaili Tour

Urban Culture and Local Life

Central Kaili is best explored through its markets, old streets and food districts rather than large monumental attractions. The traditional commercial area around Kaili Old Street, Dongmen Street (东门街) and Ximen Street (西门街) retains small silver shops, clothing stores, household businesses and neighbourhood markets.

This part of the city is less polished than a purpose-built tourism district, but that is precisely its appeal. It shows how traditional craft, ordinary commerce and contemporary urban life coexist.

Intangible Cultural Heritage

The Xiulitao Intangible Cultural Heritage Market (绣里淘非遗集市) in Kaili Miao and Dong Customs Park (凯里苗侗风情园) is one of the city’s most useful stops for understanding regional crafts.

The market brings together around 700 merchants and more than 6,000 types of products, including Miao embroidery, Dong weaving, batik, silver ornaments, clothing and contemporary cultural designs. It is both a shopping centre and a working platform for craftspeople from different parts of Qiandongnan.

Allow time to compare stalls rather than buying from the first seller. Ask about the village of origin, embroidery technique, materials and whether an item is handmade or factory produced.

Village T

Guizhou Village T (贵州村T) is a community fashion and cultural performance staged in the Miao and Dong Customs Park. Villagers, craftspeople, children, elderly residents and visitors appear in ethnic clothing, transforming traditional dress and rural objects into an informal public runway.

The event has developed into an important platform for non-heritage crafts and community participation. Kaili also hosted the national summer “Four Seasons Village Gala” in June 2026, incorporating Village T, music, dance and intangible cultural heritage displays.

Performances are commonly reported on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, but special events may alter the program. Confirm the exact starting time with the venue or your hotel on the day of the visit.

Two-Day Kaili Essential Tour

Day 1: Arrival – Kaili Old Town – Xiulitao Market – Village T

Arrive at Kaili South Railway Station and transfer to a hotel near Dashizi (大十字) or Zhongbo Pedestrian Street (中博步行街). These central neighbourhoods provide convenient access to restaurants, shops and evening food areas.

After checking in, explore Kaili Old Street and the adjoining Dongmen and Ximen streets. Rather than following a rigid sightseeing route, walk slowly through the local shops, silver workshops, clothing businesses and produce stalls.

In the late afternoon, continue to the Miao and Dong Customs Park. Browse the Xiulitao market, speak with embroidery and batik sellers, and compare traditional and modern craft products.

Have dinner nearby or return to the city centre for sour-soup fish or sour-soup beef. On a scheduled performance evening, finish the day with Village T.

Day 2: Xiasi Ancient Town – Return to Kaili

Travel to Xiasi Ancient Town, a historic settlement on the Qingshui River. Its architectural landscape combines wooden houses, drum-tower forms, stilted buildings, stone lanes and horse-head walls developed through centuries of regional trade.

Spend the morning walking along the riverside and through the old lanes. A boat trip, tea break or leisurely lunch can be added without overloading the visit. Xiasi is especially attractive after rain, when the river, tiled roofs and surrounding hills create a softer landscape.

Return to central Kaili in the afternoon for a final bowl of sour-soup rice noodles before departing from Kaili South Railway Station.

Three-Day Kaili and Miao Village Tour

Day 1: Kaili – Baiyan Village – Wudong Miao Village

After arriving in Kaili, travel by private vehicle toward the countryside of Leishan. Stop at Baiyan Village (白岩村), where terraced farmland and traditional houses form the main landscape.

Continue to Wudong Miao Village (乌东苗寨) and stay overnight in a village guesthouse. Wudong is much smaller and quieter than Xijiang, making it suitable for travellers who prefer rural scenery, simple local life and morning mist over large-scale commercial facilities.

Day 2: Wudong – Langde Miao Village – Leishan

Spend the early morning walking through Wudong before day visitors arrive. Continue to Langde Miao Village (朗德苗寨), known for its wooden architecture, community performances and traditional welcome customs.

Village demonstrations may include welcome wine, lusheng music or dancing, but schedules depend on local arrangements and visitor numbers. These activities should be treated as cultural introductions rather than guaranteed daily shows.

Stay in Leishan County (雷山县) or a nearby village guesthouse. Leishan generally offers more dining and accommodation choices than the smaller settlements.

Day 3: Leishan – Kaili – Handicraft Shopping – Departure

Return to Kaili in the morning. Visit the Xiulitao market or a specialist silver and embroidery centre if these were not covered on the first day.

When purchasing silver jewellery, ask whether the item is handmade, machine-pressed or silver-plated. Filigree work and detailed hand-hammered patterns usually require more labour and should be examined closely.

Finish with lunch in the city and transfer to Kaili South Railway Station.

Should You Visit Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village?

Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village is the region’s most famous Miao settlement and offers a dramatic hillside of closely packed wooden houses. It is suitable for first-time visitors who want large-scale architecture, panoramic photography, cultural shows and developed tourism services.

However, Xijiang is considerably more commercialized than Wudong or Langde. Travellers interested in quiet village life may prefer to visit it as a half-day or full-day excursion rather than stay overnight.

For photography, arrive before sunset and remain through the blue hour, when the hillside lights begin to appear while some natural colour remains in the sky. Heavy rain can make the approach roads slower and more difficult, so avoid late-night mountain driving in poor weather.

Where to Stay in Kaili

Dashizi and Zhongbo Pedestrian Street

The central area around Dashizi and Zhongbo Pedestrian Street is the most convenient base for first-time visitors. Restaurants, night snacks, shops and taxi services are readily available, and urban attractions can be reached without long transfers.

Choose a well-reviewed mid-range or upper-mid-range hotel rather than automatically selecting the cheapest property. Room maintenance, soundproofing and smoke-free enforcement can vary considerably between small local hotels.

Kaili South Railway Station Area

Staying near the high-speed railway station is useful for an early departure or late arrival, but it provides less atmosphere and fewer local dining options than central Kaili.

Village Guesthouses

A night in Wudong, Baiyan or another mountain village offers a completely different experience from an urban hotel. Expect simpler facilities, fewer restaurant choices and possible limitations in heating, soundproofing or luggage access.

Choose a guesthouse with vehicle access when travelling with large luggage. Some traditional villages have steep stone paths and require walking from the nearest parking area.

What to Eat in Kaili

Kaili is closely associated with the food traditions of Qiandongnan, especially fermented sour flavours.

Sour-Soup Fish and Sour-Soup Beef

Red sour soup is generally fermented with tomatoes and chillies, producing a rich, appetizing flavour. White sour soup is traditionally associated with fermented rice liquid and has a lighter acidity.

Sour-soup fish is the classic choice, while sour-soup beef is convenient for diners who prefer boneless meat. Order seasonal vegetables, tofu and noodles to cook in the remaining broth.

Niubie Hotpot

Niubie hotpot (牛瘪火锅) is one of the region’s most challenging traditional dishes. Its herbal and bitter flavour is unfamiliar to many visitors, so it is better shared in a group rather than ordered as the only meal.

Sour-Soup Rice Noodles

A bowl of sour-soup rice noodles makes an easy breakfast or light lunch. Small neighbourhood shops are often more representative than polished tourist restaurants.

Night-Market Food

The areas around Zhongbo and other central evening markets offer grilled pork feet, sticky rice, tofu, local noodles, cold desserts and simple snacks. These areas are ideal for trying several small dishes rather than having one formal meal.

Shopping for Embroidery and Silver

Kaili is one of the best shopping bases for crafts from across Qiandongnan, but quality varies widely.

Hand embroidery normally shows slight differences in individual stitches and often requires much longer production time than machine embroidery. Ask the seller to explain the pattern, technique and community of origin. Traditional motifs may represent butterflies, birds, dragons, flowers, ancestors or migration stories.

For silver ornaments, request information about silver purity and manufacturing method. Keep receipts for expensive purchases and avoid assuming that every ethnic-style item is handmade locally.

Do Not Overload the Schedule

Mountain travel takes longer than the map suggests. Plan no more than two principal villages in one day, and leave additional time for rain, photography and unplanned cultural encounters.

Use a Private Vehicle for Rural Areas

Public transport works for central Kaili and some developed destinations, but a car with driver offers much greater flexibility for village routes. Avoid driving unfamiliar mountain roads after dark or during heavy rain.

Confirm Performances

Village T, village welcome ceremonies and festival activities may change according to season, weather or special events. Confirm on the same day rather than constructing the entire itinerary around an unverified online timetable.

Carry Cash and Mobile Payment Options

Mobile payment is dominant, but small rural vendors may occasionally face weak network connections. Carry some cash in small denominations as a backup.

Respect Village Etiquette

Ask permission before taking close-up portraits, entering residential houses or photographing religious and ceremonial activities. Do not pressure residents to pose simply because they are wearing traditional clothing.

Prepare for Rain and Uneven Paths

Bring non-slip shoes, a compact raincoat and a waterproof cover for electronics. Stone lanes and wooden steps can become slippery even after light rain.

Keep the Itinerary Flexible

Kaili is best experienced through local food, markets and spontaneous village encounters. A flexible schedule produces a better journey than attempting to cover Xiasi, Xijiang, Langde, Wudong and central Kaili in one or two days.

For a first visit, choose a two-day itinerary combining central Kaili with Xiasi Ancient Town. Add a third day and a village overnight if quieter landscapes and living Miao culture are priorities.

Stay near Dashizi or Zhongbo for convenience, arrange a private vehicle for rural travel, and schedule Xiulitao and Village T for an evening when performances are confirmed. Treat Xijiang as an optional large-scale cultural destination rather than the only reason to visit the region.

The real appeal of Kaili lies in the balance between city and countryside: sour soup in a neighbourhood restaurant, embroidery in a working market, music in a village square and mist rising over wooden houses the following morning.
