  • Qiandongnan Festivals And Activities

Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture (黔东南苗族侗族自治州) is widely known as the “Land of a Hundred Festivals.” Official statistical records identify more than 396 annual festival gatherings, ranging from large celebrations attended by tens of thousands of people to small ceremonies organized by individual villages, clans or drum-tower communities.

Festival culture in Qiandongnan is not limited to staged performances. Many celebrations remain closely connected with the agricultural calendar, ancestor worship, village alliances, courtship, family reunion and community identity. Miao festivals are particularly associated with Lusheng music, silver clothing, drum dancing, bullfighting, dragon canoe racing and communal feasts, while Dong celebrations centre on drum towers, grand songs, village visits, theatrical performances, communal meals and harvest traditions.

The prefecture contains Kaili City and 15 counties, and festival dates can differ even between neighbouring villages. Most traditional celebrations follow the lunar calendar or locally selected auspicious days, so visitors should confirm the Gregorian date and public programme for the relevant year.

Main Characteristics of Qiandongnan Festival Culture

Miao New Year, Lusheng and Drum Traditions

The Miao New Year (苗年) marks the end of one agricultural cycle and the beginning of another. It is not observed on one prefecture-wide date. Different villages celebrate after the rice harvest, generally between the ninth and eleventh lunar months.

Traditional activities include ancestor offerings, preparing glutinous-rice cakes, killing the New Year pig, visiting neighbouring villages, drinking rice wine, dancing to the Lusheng, singing, bullfighting and bird-fighting competitions. Miao New Year is included in China’s national intangible cultural heritage system.

Lusheng festivals continue from the Spring Festival period into autumn. Among the most representative are the Zhouxi Gannangxiang Lusheng Festival (舟溪甘囊香芦笙节) near Kaili, the Gulong Lusheng Festival (谷陇芦笙会) in Huangping and the Basha Lusheng Festival (岜梭芦笙节) in Shibing. Lusheng dancing functions as entertainment, social communication, courtship and ceremonial expression rather than merely as a stage performance.

Sisters’ Meal Festival and Miao Courtship Culture

The Miao Sisters’ Meal Festival (苗族姊妹节) is centred on Shidong and surrounding communities in Taijiang County. It is traditionally observed around the fifteenth to seventeenth days of the third lunar month, although the public tourism programme may be moved or extended around weekends and holidays.

Young women prepare coloured glutinous rice and present it to young men, with objects hidden inside the rice traditionally conveying different messages. Modern programmes commonly include silver-costume parades, song contests, embroidery displays, Village BA activities and long-table banquets. Shidong is officially recognized as one of the principal source areas of both the Sisters’ Meal Festival and the Miao Canoe Dragon Boat Festival.

    Miao Canoe Dragon Boat Festival

The Miao Canoe Dragon Boat Festival (苗族独木龙舟节) is held along the Qingshui River in Taijiang and Shibing, traditionally from the twenty-fourth to the twenty-seventh day of the fifth lunar month.

Unlike conventional Chinese dragon boats, the Miao canoe dragon boat is constructed from three long tree trunks joined together. The celebration includes ceremonial launching, offerings, village processions, river races and exchanges between participating communities. It was added to the national intangible cultural heritage list in 2008.

Dong New Year, Grand Song and Village Visits

The Dong New Year (侗年) is celebrated on different dates by different Dong communities, generally during late autumn and early winter. Families prepare meat, rice wine and glutinous-rice cakes, visit relatives and gather for communal meals, Dong opera, Lusheng music and grand-song performances.

Liping, Congjiang and Rongjiang form the principal cultural area of the Dong Grand Song (侗族大歌). This unaccompanied, multi-part choral tradition was included in China’s national intangible cultural heritage list in 2006 and UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009.

Village Sports and Contemporary Cultural Events

Qiandongnan’s traditional festivals increasingly interact with modern rural sports and cultural brands. The best-known examples are:

    • Village BA (村BA) in Taipan Village, Taijiang
    • Village Super League or Cun Chao (村超) in Rongjiang
    • Village T Fashion Show (村T) in Kaili
    • Village Song or Cun Ge (村歌) in Liping

These are contemporary sports and cultural programmes rather than ancient fixed-date festivals. Their seasons and competition formats are announced annually, but folk dance, ethnic clothing, music, food and village participation are central to their atmosphere.

Qiandongnan Festivals Through the Four Seasons

Winter and Early Spring: November to February

Late autumn and winter are the main seasons for Miao New Year and Dong New Year. Leishan, Taijiang, Jianhe and some villages around Kaili are important Miao New Year destinations, while Liping, Congjiang and Rongjiang are central to Dong New Year celebrations.

The Spring Festival period brings another major wave of activity. Hundreds of traditional villages organize dragon dances, Dong opera, Lusheng competitions, bullfighting, “aunt returning home” gatherings and communal meals. During the 2025 Spring Festival season, 227 traditional villages in Qiandongnan organized 424 activities.

The Zhouxi Lusheng Festival is normally held between the fifteenth and twentieth days of the first lunar month, with the principal performances concentrated around the eighteenth to twentieth days. Large Lusheng teams, dancers in silver clothing and spectators from surrounding villages gather at the traditional Gannangxiang Lusheng ground.

    Spring: March to May

Spring is the main period for courtship festivals, song gatherings and agricultural ceremonies.

The Baojing Sanyuesan Festival (报京三月三) in Zhenyuan is held in the early third lunar month. Traditional activities include song exchanges, Lusheng dancing and courtship customs. Baojing Sanyuesan and Zhenyuan’s dragon-boat tradition are recognized as important elements of the county’s intangible cultural heritage.

The Sisters’ Meal Festival is spring’s largest Miao celebration. Festival dates may fall in April or May, depending on the lunar calendar and the published public programme.

Around the solar term Grain Rain, Zhaoxing Dong Village (肇兴侗寨) organizes the Guyu Festival (谷雨节). Representative customs include preparing black glutinous rice, playful face-smearing, village visits, Dong songs and communal dining. Zhaoxing is also associated with Lusheng festivals, Dong New Year and other village celebrations.

    Summer: June to August

Summer has the highest concentration of large public events. The season normally includes the Miao Canoe Dragon Boat Festival, June Sixth celebrations, Village BA, Village Super League matches and prefecture-anniversary activities.

The June Sixth Festival (六月六) appears in several ethnic and local forms. In Taijiang, village basketball developed from local summer gatherings and agricultural celebrations. In Jianhe, modern Yang’asha cultural programmes (仰阿莎文化活动) may combine water-drum dancing, parades, water activities and concerts. In Zhaoxing, June Sixth programmes may include married daughters returning to their home villages, duck-catching contests, Dong opera, water games and long-table meals.

The Village Super League transforms Rongjiang’s summer football season into a large cultural gathering, while Village BA draws major crowds to Taipan. These events are scheduled annually and should not be assumed to occur on one permanent date. Official prefectural tourism promotion identifies Village Super, Village BA, Village T and Village Song as the region’s four major contemporary cultural and sports brands.

    Autumn: September to November

Autumn is the harvest and Lusheng season. Villages celebrate new rice, open rice fields for communal fishing and organize song meetings, bullfighting and thanksgiving rituals.

The Fish-Opening Festival (开鱼节) in Angying Village, Jianhe, celebrates the rice harvest and the traditional rice–fish farming system. Activities include welcoming ceremonies, fish-catching competitions and long-table banquets.

Late in the ninth lunar month, Gulong in Huangping traditionally hosts a major Lusheng gathering. Miao New Year celebrations then begin in different villages as the agricultural year concludes.

Some major ceremonial festivals, including the Guzang or Drum-Sacrifice Festival (鼓藏节), are not annual. Their timing is decided according to village and clan traditions, and public access cannot be assumed.

    Special Events in 2026

The year 2026 marked the 70th anniversary of the establishment of Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism officially approved the anniversary celebration for 22–24 July 2026, while the local public-holiday arrangement provided two days off on 23–24 July.

The principal celebration was held in Kaili on 23 July and included an official ceremony and the Splendid Qiandongnan (锦绣黔东南) artistic performance. Other anniversary programmes included an achievement exhibition, cultural performances and activities involving all 16 county-level areas.

The expanded 70th-anniversary format was specific to 2026. In ordinary years, 23 July remains the prefecture’s establishment anniversary, but the programme is usually smaller.

    Festival Travel Planning

Best Time for a Festival Tour

For the greatest concentration of events, visit between late June and August. This period may include dragon canoe racing, June Sixth celebrations, Village BA and Village Super activities.

For traditional clothing, courtship culture and embroidery, the Sisters’ Meal Festival is the strongest choice. For a combination of Miao New Year and Dong New Year, travel between November and December, after checking village-specific dates.

    Select One Cultural Region

Qiandongnan is geographically large, and major festival venues are spread across mountain roads and river valleys. A practical festival journey normally focuses on one cultural zone:

Northern and central Miao region: Kaili–Huangping–Shibing–Zhenyuan
    Leigong Mountain Miao region: Kaili–Leishan–Taijiang–Jianhe–Danzhai
    Southern Dong region: Liping–Congjiang–Rongjiang
    Qingshui River region: Taijiang–Shibing–Zhenyuan–Jianhe

Trying to attend events in Taijiang, Zhenyuan, Liping and Rongjiang on consecutive evenings usually creates excessive driving.

    Reserve Accommodation Early

Accommodation in Shidong, Taipan, Xijiang, Zhaoxing and rural festival villages is limited. Rooms should be reserved early for Sisters’ Meal Festival, dragon canoe racing, Miao New Year and major Village BA or Village Super matches.

Kaili, Zhenyuan, Liping County town and Rongjiang County town provide broader hotel selections than individual villages.

    Respect Community Ceremonies

Visitors are generally welcome at public parades, competitions and performances. Ancestor offerings, drum-sacrifice rituals and clan ceremonies may be private.

Ask permission before photographing elders, ritual specialists, household altars or people preparing ceremonial food. Do not touch drums, sacred trees, ritual boats or offerings without invitation.

    Prepare for Summer Rain

Many major festivals occur during Qiandongnan’s rainy season. Carry a lightweight raincoat, quick-drying clothing and shoes with non-slip soles. Riverbank venues, temporary parking areas and village squares can become muddy.

Crowds around dragon-boat rivers, basketball courts and football stadiums can be extremely dense. Arrive early and follow temporary traffic and safety controls.

Major Festivals and Events Across Qiandongnan

The table covers the prefecture’s principal recurring festivals and representative county events. It cannot include every village ceremony among the region’s more than 396 annual gatherings. Exact dates and public access must be confirmed each year.
