Liupanshui City (六盘水市) is an excellent choice for travelers seeking cool summer weather, highland scenery, ethnic culture and relaxed mountain travel. Known as the “Cool City of China,” Liupanshui has an average summer temperature of approximately 19.7°C and was the first Chinese city officially named for its climate characteristics.
The city’s tourism resources are spread across four main areas: Zhongshan District (钟山区), Shuicheng District (水城区), Panzhou City (盘州市) and Liuzhi Special District (六枝特区). The key to planning a successful Liupanshui tour is therefore not to place every attraction into one rushed itinerary, but to divide the journey into geographical sections.
Best Time to Visit Liupanshui
Liupanshui can be visited throughout the year, but each season offers a different experience.

Summer is the busiest season because Liupanshui’s cool climate attracts visitors from warmer regions. Wumeng Grassland alone received more than 20,000 visitor trips per day during parts of the 2025 summer peak, so accommodation and transport should be arranged early for July and August.
Spring brings extensive highland rhododendron blooms to Wumeng Grassland (乌蒙大草原), while winter travel focuses on the ski areas at Meihuashan, Yushe and Wumeng Grassland. Ski-area opening dates depend on temperature, snowmaking and annual operating arrangements.
Understanding Liupanshui’s Main Tourism Areas
Zhongshan District: City Life and Meihuashan
Zhongshan District is the most convenient base for first-time visitors. It contains Liupanshui Railway Station, major shopping areas, restaurants and urban attractions.
The main places to visit include Shuicheng Ancient Town (水城古镇), the Guizhou Three-Line Construction Museum (贵州三线建设博物馆), Minghu National Wetland Park (明湖国家湿地公园) and Meihuashan Tourist Area (梅花山旅游景区).
Meihuashan is famous for its mountain cableway, which extends for approximately 9.91 kilometres and is recognized as the world’s longest same-route mountain cableway. It crosses forested valleys, wetlands and mountain ridges, making it suitable for visitors who want extensive views without a demanding climb.
Shuicheng District: Forests and Yi Culture
The main destination in Shuicheng is Yeyuhai National Tourist Resort (野玉海国家级旅游度假区). It combines three areas:
- Yushe National Forest Park (玉舍国家森林公园)
- Yejiping Highland Outdoor Sports Base (野鸡坪高原户外运动基地)
- Haiping Yi Cultural Town (海坪彝族文化小镇)
Visitors can ride the mountain sightseeing train, explore forest paths, experience Yi culture and stay in mountain hotels or village-style accommodation. Summer programs may include traditional music, handicrafts and Torch Festival activities, although performances and event schedules vary.
Panzhou City: Grasslands and Ancient Ginkgo Trees
Panzhou lies west of central Liupanshui and should be treated as a separate overnight area rather than a quick city excursion.
Its two most important destinations are Wumeng Grassland and Tole Ancient Ginkgo Scenic Area (妥乐古银杏景区). Wumeng Grassland contains extensive highland meadows, wind turbines, grazing areas, mountain lakes, cloud seas and seasonal rhododendrons. The protected scenic area covers approximately 55.5 square kilometres, including large natural grasslands and contiguous dwarf-rhododendron landscapes.
Tole is most attractive during the autumn ginkgo season, when ancient trees turn yellow around traditional stone houses, streams and village lanes.
Liuzhi Special District: Gorges and Minority Culture
Liuzhi is suitable for travelers with additional time or a special interest in ethnic culture. Its main themes include the Zangke River (牂牁江), hot springs, ancient towns and the culture of the Long-Horn Miao community around Suoga.
Because Liuzhi is not on the same route as Wumeng Grassland and Yeyuhai, it is best included in a five- or six-day itinerary rather than added to a short weekend tour.
Recommended Four-Day Liupanshui Tour
Day 1: Arrival and Central Liupanshui
Arrive at Liupanshui Railway Station and check into a hotel in Zhongshan District. Begin with Shuicheng Ancient Town, which dates from the Qing dynasty and now combines historic-style streets, local food and cultural spaces.
Continue to the Guizhou Three-Line Construction Museum to learn how industrial development and national defence projects shaped modern Liupanshui. Confirm opening days before visiting, as museums may close on Mondays or during temporary exhibitions.
In the late afternoon, travel to Meihuashan. Take the cableway across the mountain landscape and remain for sunset when weather conditions are suitable. Return to the city for a traditional Shuicheng luoguo, in which meat, vegetables, tofu and potatoes are cooked on a flat heated pan.
Day 2: Yeyuhai and Haiping Yi Cultural Town
Spend a complete day in Yeyuhai National Tourist Resort. Begin with the forest or highland section before taking the mountain sightseeing train between the resort’s principal areas.
Continue to Haiping Yi Cultural Town to explore Yi-inspired architecture, traditional clothing, food and cultural displays. During the summer Torch Festival season, the resort may present bonfire dancing, embroidery, folk songs and other intangible-cultural-heritage activities.
Stay overnight in Yeyuhai for a slower forest-resort experience, or return to central Liupanshui. Travelers continuing to Panzhou may transfer there in the evening to reduce driving on the following morning.
Day 3: Wumeng Grassland
Depart early for Wumeng Grassland and allow most of the day for the plateau. The main experience is not concentrated around a single landmark; it comes from driving or walking between open meadows, lakes, viewpoints, wind turbines and grazing areas.
Cloud seas and atmospheric optical phenomena depend on weather and cannot be guaranteed. Afternoon light and sunset are often more reliable for landscape photography, while morning visits provide quieter roads during busy periods.
Even in summer, the grassland can be windy and considerably cooler than the city. Carry a warm layer, rain protection, sun protection, drinking water and snacks. Remain on designated roads and paths to protect the grassland ecosystem.
Stay near the grassland or in Panzhou rather than returning late to central Liupanshui.
Day 4: Seasonal Panzhou Experience and Departure
Choose the final destination according to the season.
During autumn, visit Tole Ancient Ginkgo Village. In spring and summer, consider additional time around Wumeng Grassland or a rural destination near Panzhou. Travelers interested in history can explore Panzhou’s old urban areas and local cultural sites.
Depart from Panzhou Railway Station. This avoids returning to central Liupanshui and creates a more efficient east-to-west route.
Three-Day Tour for First-Time Visitors
Travelers with only three days should limit the number of regions covered.
Day 1: Liupanshui arrival – Shuicheng Ancient Town – Three-Line Construction Museum – Meihuashan
Day 2: Yeyuhai National Tourist Resort – Haiping Yi Cultural Town – transfer to Panzhou
Day 3: Wumeng Grassland – departure from Panzhou Railway Station
This plan requires a private car or prearranged transfer. Travelers relying on public transport should remain around central Liupanshui and Yeyuhai, saving Panzhou for a separate trip.
Five-Day Seasonal Tour
A five-day program provides a more comfortable pace:
Day 1: Central Liupanshui and Shuicheng Ancient Town
Day 2: Meihuashan and Minghu Wetland Park
Day 3: Yeyuhai and Haiping Yi Cultural Town
Day 4: Wumeng Grassland
Day 5: Tole Ancient Ginkgo Village, Jiucaiping or Panzhou cultural experiences
For autumn travel, prioritize Tole. During the late-summer flower season, replace it with Jiucaiping (韭菜坪). In winter, use the final day for skiing or a hot-spring resort.
Transportation
By High-Speed Train
Liupanshui has several railway stations serving different tourism areas.
Liupanshui Railway Station is the correct gateway for Zhongshan District, Shuicheng Ancient Town, Meihuashan and the central urban area. Its new south station building entered operation in 2026, while the north-square transport hub operates buses and some direct services toward major tourist areas.
Panzhou Railway Station is more convenient for Wumeng Grassland, Tole and other western attractions. Official travel information indicates that Wumeng Grassland can be reached from Panzhou Station by onward road transport.
Choose the railway station according to the itinerary rather than assuming every Liupanshui attraction is close to the city centre.
By Air
Liupanshui Yuezhao Airport (六盘水月照机场) serves a limited and seasonally adjusted domestic network. The 2026 summer–autumn schedule added a Ningbo service and restored services involving Nanjing and Tongren, but routes and frequencies may change between aviation seasons. Confirm the current timetable before purchasing connecting flights.
Local Transportation
Taxis and city buses are suitable for central Liupanshui. Remote destinations such as Wumeng Grassland, Yeyuhai, Jiucaiping, Tole and Zangke River are easier to visit by private vehicle, rental car or prearranged driver.
Mountain roads contain long slopes, sharp curves, fog and occasional livestock. Drivers unfamiliar with mountain conditions should avoid driving after dark or during heavy rain.

Summer is Liupanshui’s principal accommodation season. Hotels and mountain resorts can fill quickly, particularly around Yeyuhai and Wumeng Grassland, so confirmed reservations are preferable to arriving without a booking.
What to Eat
The best-known local experience is Shuicheng Luoguo (水城烙锅), a communal meal prepared on a heated pan and served with local chilli seasoning.
Other recommended dishes include:
- Shuicheng Lamb Rice Noodles (水城羊肉粉)
- Panzhou Ham (盘州火腿)
- Cichong Chicken Hotpot (茨冲鸡火锅)
- Wumeng Braised Lamb (乌蒙黄焖羊肉)
- Langdai Cold Noodles (郎岱凉粉)
- Prickly-pear juice and locally processed fruit products
These dishes form part of the officially promoted Liangdu Banquet, which brings together specialties from Zhongshan, Shuicheng, Panzhou and Liuzhi.
Essential Travel Tips
Pack for Rapid Weather Changes
Liupanshui may be cool in summer, but mountain weather changes quickly. Carry a light waterproof jacket, a warm outer layer, non-slip footwear, sun protection and a compact umbrella.
Grasslands and mountain ridges can be cold after rain or sunset even when central Liupanshui feels comfortable.
Do Not Overload the Itinerary
Wumeng Grassland, Yeyuhai and Liuzhi are not city-centre attractions. A plan that combines all three in one day will involve more driving than sightseeing.
Use central Liupanshui for Meihuashan and urban culture, Shuicheng for Yeyuhai, and Panzhou for Wumeng Grassland and Tole.
Check Seasonal Operations
Cableways, sightseeing trains, ski areas and outdoor activities may stop because of thunderstorms, strong wind, maintenance, ice or visitor-capacity controls. Confirm operations through official scenic-area notices before departure.
Avoid Undeveloped Mountain and River Sites
During the summer rainy season, do not enter unapproved canyons, riverbeds, waterfalls, caves or informal “wild attractions.” Flash floods, falling rocks and rapidly rising water can occur far from the original rainfall area.
Protect the Highland Environment
Wumeng Grassland is protected by a dedicated local regulation. Drive only on designated roads, avoid parking on natural grassland, do not collect flowers and keep away from grazing animals.
