With an average summer temperature of around 19°C, the city transforms its cool mountain climate into a long cultural and tourism season filled with ethnic celebrations, outdoor sports, music, food events and village gatherings. In 2026, the citywide summer escape season was designed as a 156-day programme beginning in May, with major activities continuing through the hottest months of the year.

Liupanshui is home to Yi, Miao, Buyi and numerous other ethnic communities. Its best-known celebrations include the Haiping Yi Torch Festival, the Buyi “June Sixth” Festival, several Miao Tiaohua Festivals and the Miao “April Eighth” Festival. These traditional occasions are increasingly presented alongside marathons, village runs, folk-sports competitions, intangible cultural heritage markets and winter sports events, creating an almost year-round festival calendar.

Festival Culture in Liupanshui

Liupanshui’s festival culture is closely connected with mountain agriculture, ancestor worship, courtship traditions, seasonal prayers and community identity. The Yi Torch Festival celebrates fire, light and collective unity; Buyi “June Sixth” ceremonies express gratitude to nature and prayers for favourable weather and abundant harvests; Miao Tiaohua gatherings combine ancestral remembrance with music, dancing and social interaction.

Traditional festival programmes frequently include lusheng music, three-eyed flute performances, wooden-leaf music, bronze-drum ceremonies, folk songs, costume processions, bamboo-pole dancing and village banquets. Spring: Miao Tiaohua Festivals and New Year Folk Activities

Spring begins with a series of Miao Tiaohua Festivals (苗族跳花节) held in different communities. One of the most distinctive takes place in Gaoxing Village (高兴村), Suoga Miao, Yi and Hui Ethnic Township (梭戛苗族彝族回族乡), Liuzhi Special District (六枝特区). In 2026, the festival was held on February 26, corresponding to the tenth day of the first lunar month. Miao residents from surrounding villages carried a symbolic flower tree, played traditional instruments, performed lusheng dances and sang antiphonal songs.

The Miao “April Eighth” Festival (苗族四月八) is celebrated in Maba Village (马坝村), Yuezhao Subdistrict (月照街道), Zhongshan District (钟山区). The programme generally combines ceremonial worship, welcoming rituals, drum dancing, lusheng performances, traditional costume displays, local food and community activities. The 2025 event was the 22nd edition of the modern Maba festival, confirming its status as an established annual celebration.

Summer: The Main Festival Season

Summer is the busiest period in Liupanshui. The citywide Liupanshui Summer Escape Season (中国凉都·六盘水避暑季) usually begins in May and continues into early autumn. It brings together ethnic festivals, concerts, food events, sporting competitions, rural tourism activities and holiday performances across Zhongshan District, Shuicheng District, Panzhou and Liuzhi Special District.

The season’s most famous cultural event is the Yeyuhai–Haiping Yi Torch Festival Season (野玉海·海坪彝族火把季) in Yeyuhai National Tourist Resort (野玉海国家级旅游度假区), Shuicheng District (水城区). The 2026 season ran from July 18 to August 16, turning the traditional Torch Festival into a month-long summer programme rather than a single evening celebration.

The main celebration normally includes a ceremonial fire-lighting ritual, torch processions, Yi singing and dancing, welcoming wine, ethnic costume displays and communal Dati Dance (达体舞) around the fire. Performances may feature Cuotaiji (撮泰吉), an ancient Yi ritual theatre tradition, as well as bell dancing, folk weddings, embroidery demonstrations and heritage markets. Miluo Town (米箩镇) in Shuicheng District holds another important Buyi celebration, usually centred on Luomo Village Buyi Cultural Square (倮么村布依文化广场). Programmes have included welcoming wine, costume performances, folk competitions, food experiences, ancestor ceremonies and prayers for a good harvest. The 2026 programme was scheduled over several days from July 17 to 19.

Huaga Township (花戛乡) also preserves an annual Buyi “June Sixth” celebration in Tianmen Village (天门村). Visitors may encounter folk singing, suona music, wooden-leaf performances, traditional clothing, village sports and regional dishes. Because Huaga sometimes follows a locally selected lunar date, including an intercalary sixth month in some years, its celebration does not necessarily fall on the same Gregorian date as the Yuelianghe event.

The Liupanshui Marathon (六盘水马拉松) has become the city’s leading sports festival and an important companion to the summer ethnic celebrations. Tole Ancient Ginkgo Village (妥乐古银杏村) in Panzhou becomes one of Liupanshui’s most popular autumn destinations when its ancient ginkgo trees turn golden. The peak period normally attracts enough visitors for the scenic area to introduce special ticketing, shuttle and traffic arrangements.

Although the ginkgo season is primarily a natural sightseeing event rather than a fixed ethnic festival, local programmes may include photography activities, agricultural-product markets, folk performances and village food experiences. Winter: Ski Festivals and New Year Activities

Liupanshui promotes itself as a southern Chinese winter sports destination through the annual Liupanshui Ski Season (六盘水滑雪季). The 2025–2026 season included skiing, curling, youth winter sports, roller skating and family events, with Meihuashan International Ski Resort (梅花山国际滑雪场) and Yushe Snow Mountain Ski Resort (玉舍雪山滑雪场) serving as the main venues.

The Gregorian dates of Tiaohua, April Eighth, June Sixth and the traditional Torch Festival change every year. Reserve Summer Accommodation Early
