Bijie Travel Tips

Bijie (毕节) lies in the Wumeng Mountains of northwestern Guizhou, where spectacular caves, azalea forests, alpine grasslands, highland wetlands, river canyons and Yi, Miao and Hui cultures come together. Its leading attractions include the National 5A-rated Zhijin Cave (织金洞) and Baili Azalea Scenic Area (百里杜鹃景区), together with Jiudongtian (九洞天), Wujiangyuan Hundred-Mile Gallery (乌江源百里画廊), Asilixi Grassland (阿西里西大草原) and Jiucaiping (韭菜坪).

Bijie is not a destination that should be explored through repeated day trips from one hotel. Its attractions extend from Qianxi and Zhijin in the east to Hezhang and Weining in the west, and road journeys between the outer areas can take several hours. The most efficient approach is to divide the trip into an eastern karst-and-culture circuit and a western highland extension.

For most first-time visitors, four or five days are sufficient for Zhijin, Wujiangyuan, Dafang and Baili Azalea. Six to eight days are preferable when adding Asilixi, Jiucaiping or Weining Caohai.

Best Time to Visit Bijie

Bijie has a cool plateau climate and promotes an average summer temperature of approximately 21°C, making June to September the principal season for summer retreats, cave exploration and highland travel.

The azalea season changes according to temperature and rainfall. In 2026, the scenic area opened for the flowering season on March 10 and entered its main bloom period in late March. Travellers should check the current flower forecast instead of assuming that the same dates apply every year.

The purple flower landscape at Jiucaiping normally begins developing in August and often remains attractive into September. Conditions differ by elevation and annual weather.

Winter visitors can consider Caohai National Nature Reserve (草海国家级自然保护区) in Weining. December to February is the main birdwatching period, when black-necked cranes and other migratory birds use the highland wetland as a winter habitat.

Understanding Bijie’s Main Travel Areas

Visitors with fewer than five days should remain in the eastern and central areas. Hezhang and Weining should be treated as a separate western extension, not squeezed into an already crowded Zhijin and Baili Azalea itinerary.

Recommended Bijie Routes

Three Days: Essential Bijie

Day 1: Bijie City and Dafang

Arrive at Bijie Railway Station (毕节站) or Bijie Feixiong Airport and transfer to Qixingguan or Dafang. Visit Shexiang Ancient Town (奢香古镇), Guizhou Xuanwei Mansion (贵州宣慰府) and the Shexiang Museum (奢香博物馆) to understand the history of the Shuixi region and the influential Yi leader Lady Shexiang.

Stay in Dafang when visiting Jiudongtian the following morning. Stay in central Bijie when transport connections are more important than early scenic-area access.

Day 2: Jiudongtian and Zhijin

Explore Jiudongtian Scenic Area, where an underground river passes through a sequence of large cave openings, natural bridges and karst chambers. Continue to Zhijin County and stay near the county centre, Pingyuan Ancient Town or the Zhijin Cave area.

Allow at least half a day for Jiudongtian. Boat operations and individual sections can be affected by high water, maintenance and weather, so check the operating notice before departure.

Day 3: Zhijin Cave

Devote the morning to Zhijin Cave, the centrepiece of Zhijindong Cave UNESCO Global Geopark. UNESCO describes the geopark as a karst landscape extending across parts of Zhijin and Qianxi, with Zhijin Cave, the Qijiehe River and Dongfeng Lake representing different geological units.

The standard cave visit involves many steps and usually requires two to three hours. Afterwards, visit Zhijin Ancient Town or continue to Guiyang, Bijie or the next destination.

Four to Five Days: Eastern Bijie Scenic Circuit

Bijie – Dafang – Jiudongtian – Zhijin – Wujiangyuan – Baili Azalea

This is the best introductory Bijie route because it combines Yi history, caves, river canyons, Miao culture and seasonal flower landscapes without extending too far west.

After Zhijin Cave, continue to Wujiangyuan Hundred-Mile Gallery and Huawu Village (化屋村). The area combines Wujiang River cliffs, reservoir scenery, walking routes and Miao embroidery and batik traditions. A boat excursion may be available, but navigation can be suspended because of weather, water conditions or operational management.

Finish with Baili Azalea during the flowering season. Outside March and April, the Baili Azalea region can still be visited for Fangjiaping Scenic Area (方家坪景区), forest recreation and summer accommodation, but it should not be expected to provide the same visual experience as the main bloom.

Six to Eight Days: Complete Bijie Highlights

Bijie – Dafang – Baili Azalea – Jiudongtian – Zhijin – Wujiangyuan – Hezhang

After completing the eastern circuit, return through central Bijie and continue west to Hezhang. Spend one day at Asilixi Grassland, followed by Jiucaiping when the flowers or mountain conditions are suitable.

Asilixi Grassland, also known as Ertaipo (二台坡), has an average elevation of approximately 2,300 metres and lies about 15 kilometres from Jiucaiping. The two attractions are geographically suitable for a combined Hezhang stay.

Do not schedule a fixed evening flight or train immediately after returning from the western highlands. Fog, rain, traffic and scenic-area queues can make journey times unpredictable.

Seven to Nine Days: Bijie Nature and Highland Culture

Bijie – Dafang – Zhijin – Qianxi – Baili Azalea – Hezhang – Weining

Add Weining when winter birdwatching, highland landscapes or Yi, Hui and Miao culture are priorities. Caohai is most meaningful during the migratory-bird season rather than as a routine summer sightseeing stop.

This program requires a private vehicle or a carefully planned combination of rail and road transport.

How to Get to Bijie

By High-Speed Train

Bijie Railway Station is located on the Chengdu–Guiyang high-speed railway and is the most convenient gateway for travellers coming from Guiyang, Chengdu and connected high-speed rail cities. The adjoining passenger-transport hub has operated road services to several counties and towns, although routes and departure times should be reconfirmed locally.

Some eastern attractions may also be approached through Qianxi Railway Station (黔西站) or Zhijin Railway Station (织金站), depending on the selected route. A train station’s proximity on a map does not guarantee a direct transfer to the scenic entrance, so road connections must be included in the schedule.

By Air

Bijie Feixiong Airport (毕节飞雄机场) serves the city, but destinations and flight frequencies change periodically. Confirm the current timetable before arranging accommodation or private transfers.

For many international visitors, travelling through Guiyang Longdongbao International Airport and continuing by high-speed train or private vehicle offers greater flexibility.

By Road

Bijie is connected with Guiyang, Chengdu, Zunyi, Liupanshui and Yunnan through expressways. Road transport remains essential because the main attractions are dispersed across different counties.

Mountain roads can include long slopes, sharp bends, tunnels and sections affected by fog. Avoid driving at night and leave additional time during rain, the azalea season and major holidays.

Transportation within Bijie

A private car with a local driver is the most efficient option for groups of three or more, families and travellers carrying luggage. It is particularly useful for the following combinations:

Public and tourism coaches can work for a single attraction, but they are less suitable for an itinerary involving several counties. Ride-hailing services are convenient within county towns but may be difficult to find after visiting remote scenic areas.

Tickets and Reservations

Major Bijie attractions increasingly use real-name, timed-entry reservation systems. The One-Code Tour Guizhou platform (一码游贵州) and official scenic-area accounts are the main booking channels.

During the 2026 flowering season, Baili Azalea required real-name reservations with selected entrance periods. Visitors could reserve through the official Baili Azalea account, One-Code Tour Guizhou and authorized platforms. The system also allowed sightseeing-vehicle tickets to be booked with the entrance reservation.

Zhijin Cave can reach its visitor-management warning level during summer. In July 2026, the scenic area advised visitors to follow the principle of “no reservation, no travel” and noted that tickets could be booked within a 15-day window.

Seasonal evening visits have also operated at Zhijin Cave. In summer 2026, daytime admission ran from 08:30 to 17:00, with a separate evening entry period. Such programs are seasonal and should be reconfirmed before travel.

Carry the original passport or identity document used for every reservation. International travellers should confirm whether the booking platform accepts passports directly.

Where to Stay

During the azalea season, staying near the scenic area is preferable to making an early-morning road transfer from central Bijie. Rural guesthouses may offer strong scenery but limited sound insulation, heating, elevators or vehicle access, so facilities should be confirmed before booking.

What to Eat in Bijie

Bijie’s food reflects northern Guizhou plateau agriculture and its Yi, Miao, Hui and Han communities. Jinsha mutton rice noodles (金沙羊肉粉) are a popular breakfast, while Bijie griddle barbecue, or luoguo (毕节烙锅), is one of the city’s defining evening meals.

Other specialities include Liulong dried-tofu hotpot (六龙豆干火锅), Zhijin buckwheat jelly (织金荞凉粉), Weining buckwheat cakes (威宁荞酥／小粑粑), cured meat, fern-root products and spicy fried potatoes.

The widest food selection is found in Qixingguan, Dafang, Zhijin and the older neighbourhoods of county towns. Restaurants immediately outside major scenic entrances often emphasize convenience rather than local character.

Practical Travel Tips

Use layered clothing. Bijie’s valleys, caves and highlands have very different temperatures. Zhijin Cave remains cool throughout the year, while Jiucaiping and Asilixi can be cold and windy even during summer.

Wear non-slip shoes. Cave steps, canyon paths and highland trails may remain damp after rain.

Carry both sun and rain protection. Highland ultraviolet exposure can be strong, but weather changes quickly in the Wumeng Mountains.

Do not underestimate travel time. A road that appears short on a map may include mountain sections, slow village traffic and scenic-area transfers.

Avoid unofficial paths. Karst cliffs, sinkholes and grassland areas can contain unstable ground, falling-rock risks and rapidly changing fog.

Respect ethnic traditions. Ask before photographing residents, embroidery work, religious ceremonies or festival clothing.

Follow crowd-control instructions during festivals. Bijie organizes citywide summer events and a Torch Carnival season during July and August, with performances, sports, food and intangible-heritage activities across several counties.
