Bijie (毕节) is one of northwestern Guizhou’s richest destinations for ethnic festivals, mountain celebrations and seasonal tourism events. The city is home to Yi, Miao, Bai, Gelao, Hui and other communities whose traditional calendars include fire worship, horse racing, lusheng dancing, courtship gatherings, folk singing and agricultural rituals.

The most important celebration is the Yi Torch Festival (彝族火把节) of Hezhang County. Traditionally observed around the twenty-fourth day of the sixth lunar month, it was added to China’s national intangible cultural heritage list in 2011. Different areas developed separate themes. Hezhang presented the “Fire of Hope,” Weining emphasized sport and health, Baili Azalea combined bonfires with music and cycling, while Dafang used its terraced urban landscape for fire-themed night activities. Qixingguan, Zhijin, Qianxi, Jinsha and Nayong also organized cultural, sports and tourism events during the season.

Annual programs should not be assumed to remain identical. Concerts, races, temporary markets and scenic-area performances are modern tourism events whose dates and names may change each year.

Spring Festivals and Flower Events

Baili Azalea Flower Season

The most important spring event is the Baili Azalea Flower Season (百里杜鹃花季), normally centred on late March and April. Vast hillsides are covered with red, pink, purple and white rhododendrons, attracting large numbers of visitors to the Pudi and Jinpo scenic areas.

The 2026 program included a Flower Goddess heritage performance, costumed flower-fairy parades, musical activities, a national Go tournament, outdoor walking events and a flower-trail cross-country race. Hezhang’s principal program ran from July 24 into early August and included bonfires, mountain races and Miao Tiaohua activities. Weining scheduled grassland sport, horse racing and traditional competitions from late July into August.

Baili Azalea arranged bonfire nights, concerts and a cycling event from August 6 to 16, while Dafang scheduled its principal “Fire of Harmony” program for August 8, incorporating terraced-town night experiences, music and food.

The exact citywide sequence is specific to 2026. Travellers planning later years should reconfirm the official calendar rather than using these dates as a permanent timetable.

Late-Summer Festivals

Miao Rice Flower Festival

The Miao Rice Flower Festival (苗族米花节) is observed in Tieshi Miao and Yi Township in Qianxi, particularly around Yantangzhai Village. It traditionally takes place from the sixteenth to the eighteenth day of the seventh lunar month, with the seventeenth being the principal celebration day.

Miao communities and visitors from surrounding areas gather for singing, dancing, costume displays and social activities. The name is associated with the seasonal stage when rice plants are flowering.

Jiucaiping Wild Chive Flower Season

From approximately late August through September, Jiucaiping (韭菜坪) in Hezhang becomes covered with purple wild chive flowers. Scenic-area programs may include mountain walks, photography activities, music and cultural performances.

This is a seasonal tourism event rather than a traditional ethnic festival. Flowering conditions depend on altitude, rainfall and temperature, and the best period varies each year.

Autumn and Winter Events

During the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holiday, scenic areas such as Shexiang Ancient Town, Pingyuan Ancient Town, Zhijin Cave, Wujiangyuan and Baili Azalea frequently organize night tours, heritage markets, music performances and family activities.
