  • Qinzhou Climate

    Qinzhou is located on the northern coast of the Beibu Gulf, with a typical landscape pattern of higher terrain in the north and lower terrain in the south. The city’s geography can be divided into three major zones: the northern mountainous area formed by the branches of the Shiwandashan Mountains (十万大山) and Liuwandashan Mountains (六万大山), the central plains and gentle hills around the urban area, and the southern coastal plains, bays, and tidal wetlands.

    This north–south terrain structure creates clear regional climate differences. The northern mountains are cooler and wetter, the central urban area experiences stronger heat accumulation and humidity, while the southern coastal zone benefits from ocean regulation with mild temperatures but higher humidity and stronger typhoon influence.

    The combination of mountains, rivers, coastline, and the Beibu Gulf creates Qinzhou’s overall climate characteristics: warm winters, long summers, abundant rainfall, high humidity, and strong seasonal differences in tourism conditions.

    Northern Mountain Climate Influence | Lingshan and Pubei Areas

    The northern part of Qinzhou, including parts of Lingshan County (灵山县) and Pubei County (浦北县), is dominated by hills, forests, and mountain valleys.

    The mountain terrain acts as a natural barrier against cold air from the north, which reduces winter temperature drops compared with inland areas at the same latitude. Winter in northern Qinzhou is generally mild, although mountain areas can feel cooler due to stronger winds and larger temperature differences between day and night.

    During summer, warm and humid air from the South China Sea rises when it meets the mountains, creating more rainfall on windward slopes. This results in lush forests, waterfalls, and streams, making northern Qinzhou an ideal area for summer hiking, forest recreation, and ecological tourism.

    Mountain areas also have stronger daily temperature differences. Compared with the city center, temperatures are often 3–5℃ lower, especially in forested valleys. This creates comfortable microclimates suitable for summer retreats, hiking, tea gardens, and rural wellness tourism.

    However, mountain roads are more affected by weather conditions. During the rainy season from May to September, travelers should pay attention to slippery roads, temporary flooding, and possible landslides.

    Central Urban Climate Influence | Qinzhou City Area

    The central urban area, including Qinnan District (钦南区) and Qinbei District (钦北区), is located on relatively flat terrain.

    Because of urban development, buildings, and paved areas, the city experiences a noticeable urban heat island effect. Summer temperatures are similar to coastal areas, but the perceived temperature is often higher because of humidity and reduced air circulation.

    The flat terrain allows sea breezes to enter the city, improving ventilation compared with enclosed mountain valleys. However, during periods of heavy rainfall, some low-lying urban areas may experience temporary water accumulation.

    From February to April, Qinzhou’s central area is affected by the typical southern China “returning dampness” weather (回南天), when warm humid air meets cooler surfaces, causing floors, walls, and clothing to become damp.

    Southern Coastal Climate Influence | Qinzhou Port, Sanniang Bay and Maoweihai

    The southern coastal region, including Qinzhou Port (钦州港), Sanniang Bay (三娘湾), and Maoweihai Bay (茅尾海), is strongly influenced by the Beibu Gulf.

    The ocean acts as a temperature regulator, making coastal areas warmer in winter and slightly cooler in summer compared with inland locations. The annual temperature variation is smaller, creating a mild maritime climate.

    However, coastal humidity is much higher. Sea moisture keeps annual humidity levels high, especially during spring returning dampness periods. Salt spray from the sea can also accelerate corrosion of outdoor equipment and buildings.

    The coast receives the strongest impact from tropical storms and typhoons between July and September. During this period, marine activities such as dolphin watching, fishing experiences, and boat tours may be temporarily suspended.

    Winter and early spring mornings often bring sea fog, especially around Sanniang Bay and Maoweihai. Fog can reduce visibility and influence marine sightseeing conditions.

    River and Canal Climate Influence

    The Qinjiang River (钦江) and the developing Pinglu Canal (平陆运河) influence local humidity and water circulation.

    River systems transport moisture into inland areas, slightly increasing humidity around urban districts. During the rainy season, rising water levels can increase the risk of flooding in low-lying areas, while in dry seasons river evaporation helps moderate local temperatures.

    These waterways also contribute to Qinzhou’s future waterfront tourism development, combining climate advantages with river scenery and leisure activities.

    Qinzhou Overall Climate Overview

    Qinzhou belongs to a southern subtropical maritime monsoon climate. The city has an average annual temperature of around 22℃, annual rainfall of approximately 2,000 mm, and more than 350 frost-free days each year.

    The climate features a long summer, a short winter, abundant rainfall, and strong maritime influence.

    The rainy season generally lasts from April to September, accounting for most annual precipitation. The dry season is mainly from October to March, when weather becomes clearer and more comfortable for outdoor tourism.

    Regional Climate Differences

    Region Climate Features Tourism Advantages
    Southern Coast Mild temperature, high humidity, frequent sea fog, stronger typhoon influence Dolphin watching, beaches, seafood, coastal photography
    Central City Hot summers, strong humidity, urban heat effect Old streets, museums, cultural tourism
    Northern Mountains Cooler temperatures, larger temperature differences, more rainfall Hiking, forests, waterfalls, wellness tourism
    River Areas Moderate humidity and temperature Riverside leisure and ecological tourism

    Important Climate Considerations

    Returning dampness period (February–April): Humidity is high, especially near the coast. Travelers should prepare breathable clothing and drying equipment.

    Typhoon season (July–September): Coastal travel requires flexible schedules. Marine activities may be suspended temporarily.

    Morning fog season (January–April): Coastal sightseeing may be affected during early mornings.

    Summer thunderstorms: Mountain roads and outdoor activities require weather monitoring.

    Four Seasons Qinzhou Travel Climate Guide

    Spring (March–May) | Misty Landscapes, Ancient Villages and Cultural Experiences

    • Nixing Pottery cultural experience (坭兴陶文化体验) for traditional craftsmanship;
    • Dalu Ancient Village (大芦村) and mountain villages for cultural photography;
    • Coastal areas for quieter dolphin watching and fishing village visits.

    Recommended clothing:

    Light shirts, breathable trousers, waterproof jackets, and comfortable hiking shoes. A small umbrella and moisture-control items are useful during humid periods.

    Summer (June–August) | Coastal Activities and Seafood Season

    Summer is hot and humid, with temperatures often reaching 26–34℃.

    This is the main season for:

    • Sanniang Bay dolphin watching;

    Quick-dry shirts, shorts, sun protection clothing, waterproof phone bags, sandals suitable for water activities, and mosquito protection.

    Autumn (September–November) | Best Overall Travel Season

    Autumn is generally considered the best season to visit Qinzhou.

    The weather becomes dry, temperatures become comfortable, and visibility improves significantly. The sea becomes clearer, mountain landscapes become more attractive, and outdoor activities become easier.

    Recommended activities include:

    • Sanniang Bay dolphin observation;
    • Coastal road self-driving;
    • Mountain hiking;
    • Ancient village exploration;

    Winter is suitable for:

    • Historic sites;
    • Museums;
    • Traditional villages;
    • Pottery experiences;
    • Coastal walking.

    Swimming and water activities are less suitable because seawater temperatures are lower and coastal winds can be stronger.
