  • Sanjiang Transportation

Sanjiang Dong Autonomous County is located at the junction of Guangxi, Hunan, and Guizhou provinces, featuring a mountainous landscape dominated by hills, valleys, and rivers. With the Xunjiang, Rongjiang, and Liujiang Rivers flowing through the region, Sanjiang has developed a tourism transportation system based on high-speed rail access, highway connections, county-level public transportation, scenic area shuttle services, and self-driving exploration.

The county’s tourism transportation can be divided into four major areas: Guyi Town Central Area, Chengyang Eight Dong Villages Area, Dudong Mountain Dong Villages Area, and Danzhou Ancient Town & Riverside Area. Each area has different transportation characteristics. The county center has convenient roads and is suitable for walking and shared electric bicycles. Chengyang Eight Dong Villages has mature tourist shuttle services. Buyang, Gaoding, and Batuan areas are located in mountainous regions with limited public transportation and are better explored by private car or chartered vehicles. Danzhou Ancient Town requires a combination of road transportation and ferry access.

Sanjiang does not have a subway system. Travelers mainly rely on high-speed trains, long-distance buses, tourist shuttle buses, taxis, ride-hailing services, and self-driving vehicles. Mountain roads can be affected by weather, especially in Dudong, Gaoding, and Buyang areas, where heavy rain may cause slippery roads or falling rocks. Visitors driving or riding motorcycles should slow down and avoid traveling through mountain roads at night.

Travelers should be cautious of unofficial vehicles soliciting passengers at railway stations and scenic entrances. Official tourist buses, licensed taxis, and ride-hailing services are safer choices. Chengyang Eight Dong Villages and Danzhou Ancient Town both require transfer transportation, so planning the route in advance can save considerable time.

Transportation to Sanjiang from Other Destinations

High-Speed Railway: The Most Convenient Way to Reach Sanjiang

Sanjiang South Railway Station is the main transportation gateway of the county. Located in the southern part of Guyi Town, the station is about 10 minutes by car from the county center and provides the most convenient arrival option for independent travelers.

High-speed trains connect Sanjiang with major destinations including Guilin, Liuzhou, Guangzhou, and Guiyang. The journey from Guilin North Railway Station to Sanjiang South Railway Station usually takes around 25–40 minutes, while Liuzhou to Sanjiang takes about 40–70 minutes.

After arriving at Sanjiang South Station, visitors can continue their journey by public bus, taxi, ride-hailing vehicle, or tourist shuttle. Buses provide affordable access to the county center, while direct tourist routes are available for Chengyang Eight Dong Villages.

The advantage of high-speed rail is its efficiency and reliability, especially during peak travel seasons. However, the railway station is not directly located beside major rural attractions, so additional transfers are needed.

Long-Distance Bus: An Affordable Traditional Option

Sanjiang maintains convenient road connections with Guilin, Liuzhou, and surrounding counties. Long-distance buses from Guilin and Liuzhou arrive at Sanjiang County Bus Station, providing an economical transportation option.

The bus journey from Guilin usually takes around 2–3 hours, while Liuzhou takes approximately 1 hour. After arriving in the county center, travelers can transfer to local buses or tourist routes.

For visitors traveling from Tongdao in Hunan, Liping and Congjiang in Guizhou, regional buses also provide access to Sanjiang, making it convenient to combine Sanjiang with a broader Guangxi–Hunan–Guizhou ethnic culture route.

Air Travel Connection: Suitable for Long-Distance Visitors

Sanjiang does not have its own airport. The nearest major airport is Guilin Liangjiang International Airport.

International and long-distance travelers usually choose a combination of flight and high-speed railway. After arriving at Guilin Airport, visitors can transfer to Guilin North Railway Station and continue by high-speed train to Sanjiang South Station.

This combination is generally more stable and comfortable than long-distance road transportation, especially for overseas visitors carrying luggage.

Self-Driving and Private Transfer: Best for Deep Exploration

For travelers planning to visit Chengyang Eight Dong Villages, Buyang Fairy Mountain Tea Garden, Gaoding Dong Village, Batuan Wind and Rain Bridge, and Danzhou Ancient Town in one trip, self-driving or private charter transportation is the most flexible option.

The driving distance from Guilin to Sanjiang is about 1.5 hours, while Liuzhou to Sanjiang takes about 1 hour. The G76 Xiamen–Chengdu Expressway and other regional highways connect the county with surrounding destinations.

The greatest advantage of self-driving is flexibility. Travelers can stop freely at Dong villages, tea plantations, traditional bridges, and rural viewpoints for photography. However, mountain roads in Dudong and Gaoding are narrow and winding, requiring careful driving.

Transportation Guide for Main Tourism Areas in Sanjiang

    Guyi Town Central Area Transportation

Sanjiang Drum Tower, Sanjiang Wind and Rain Bridge, Moon Street, and Dong Heavenly Palace

Guyi Town is the tourism service center of Sanjiang. Most visitors choose to stay here before exploring surrounding attractions. The main landmarks, including Sanjiang Drum Tower, Sanjiang Wind and Rain Bridge, Moon Street, and Dong Heavenly Palace, are located relatively close to each other and can easily be explored on foot.

Local buses cover the major tourism areas, including Dong Bird’s Nest, Zuomei Sanjiang performance venue, and Dong Heavenly Palace Cultural Area.

Sanjiang Drum Tower and Sanjiang Wind and Rain Bridge are especially beautiful after sunset. Visitors can enjoy an evening walk along the Xunjiang River and experience Dong-style food and culture around Moon Street.

    Shared Electric Bicycle Travel

Shared electric bicycles are a convenient option for short-distance travel within Guyi Town.

    A recommended route includes:

Dong Bird’s Nest → Duoye Square → Sanjiang Drum Tower → Moon Street → Sanjiang Wind and Rain Bridge → Dong Heavenly Palace.

This route is suitable for young travelers who want to explore the county center at their own pace.

However, shared electric bicycles are mainly designed for urban areas and should not be used to travel to Chengyang Eight Dong Villages, Buyang, or Gaoding. Mountain roads are too steep and distances are too long, creating safety and battery limitations.

Chengyang Eight Dong Villages Transportation Guide

Chengyang Eight Dong Villages is the most famous attraction in Sanjiang and the essential destination for first-time visitors. It is located about 16 kilometers northeast of the county center.

    Public Transportation Options

Tourists can take tourist buses or local routes from Guyi Town to Chengyang Eight Dong Villages. The journey takes around 30 minutes.

Direct tourist transportation from Sanjiang South Railway Station is also available, reducing transfer time for high-speed rail passengers.

    Internal Scenic Transportation

Chengyang Eight Dong Villages consists of several traditional Dong villages, including Ma’an Village, Ping Village, and Yan Village. Since the villages are spread out, walking between all areas requires significant time and energy.

The scenic shuttle bus is recommended, especially for elderly travelers, families with children, and visitors with limited time.

    Self-Driving Parking

Self-driving visitors can park near the visitor center and transfer to scenic transportation to enter the villages. Private vehicles generally cannot directly enter the main sightseeing areas.

    Dudong Mountain Area Transportation Guide

The Dudong area includes Buyang Fairy Mountain, Gaoding Dong Village, and Batuan Wind and Rain Bridge. It represents one of the most authentic and less-commercialized cultural regions of Sanjiang.

Public transportation in this area is limited, so independent travelers should prepare transportation in advance.

    Buyang Fairy Mountain Transportation

Buyang Fairy Mountain is approximately 40–50 minutes from the county center by car. The road condition is relatively good, making it suitable for families, photographers, and tea culture travelers.

Visitors can combine tea plantation sightseeing, tea picking, and tea-making experiences into a half-day or full-day itinerary.

Gaoding Dong Village and Batuan Wind and Rain Bridge Transportation

Gaoding Dong Village and Batuan Wind and Rain Bridge are located deeper in the mountains. The journey includes winding mountain roads, making private cars, chartered vehicles, or shared transfers the most practical choices.

During the rainy season, travelers should check weather conditions before departure and avoid driving too fast on mountain roads.

Danzhou Ancient Town and Sanjiang Riverside Transportation

Danzhou Ancient Town is located on an island in the Rongjiang River and represents the unique water-town culture of Sanjiang.

Visitors must first reach the Danzhou Wharf and then take a ferry to enter the ancient town. Vehicles cannot enter the island, and sightseeing is mainly done on foot.

Self-driving travelers can park at the wharf before taking the ferry. Danzhou is ideal for a relaxed half-day trip, featuring ancient streets, traditional buildings, historical sites, and seasonal pomelo harvesting experiences.

    Independent Transportation Options in Sanjiang

    Self-Driving Travel

Self-driving is the best choice for travelers who want to explore Sanjiang in depth, especially for trips lasting two days or more.

    A recommended route is:

Guyi Town → Chengyang Eight Dong Villages → Buyang Fairy Mountain → Gaoding Dong Village → Batuan Wind and Rain Bridge → Danzhou Ancient Town.

Drivers should pay attention to mountain road conditions, especially in Dudong and Gaoding. Avoiding nighttime mountain driving is strongly recommended.

    Electric Bicycle Travel

Shared electric bicycles are suitable for exploring the county center but are not suitable for full-county sightseeing.

The best use scenario is a relaxed cultural route around Guyi Town, combining riverside scenery, Dong architecture, and local streets.

    Bicycle Travel

Traditional bicycles are only suitable for short-distance leisure riding along the riverside and within the town.

Because Sanjiang is mainly mountainous, routes to Chengyang, Buyang, and Gaoding involve many uphill sections and are physically demanding.

    Motorcycle Travel

Motorcycles are suitable for experienced riders who want to explore rural roads and photography locations.

Sanjiang offers many beautiful mountain routes, Dong villages, traditional bridges, and tea plantations. However, riders must wear helmets and avoid mountain riding during heavy rain.

Recommended Transportation Plans by Traveler Type

For a one-day trip, the best option is taking the high-speed train to Sanjiang South Station, visiting Chengyang Eight Dong Villages, then returning to Guyi Town for Sanjiang Drum Tower and Wind and Rain Bridge.

For a two-day trip, travelers can spend the first day exploring Chengyang Eight Dong Villages and watching the Zuomei Sanjiang performance, then visit Buyang Fairy Mountain or Gaoding Dong Village on the second day.

For a three-day deep cultural journey, self-driving or private transportation is recommended to connect Chengyang, Buyang, Gaoding, Batuan Wind and Rain Bridge, and Danzhou Ancient Town.

For international study groups, chartered tourist buses with bilingual guides and professional drivers provide the safest and most efficient transportation solution.

Sanjiang Transportation Tips and Common Mistakes to Avoid

Avoid unofficial vehicles promoted by individuals at railway stations and scenic entrances. Always choose licensed transportation services.

Do not use shared electric bicycles to travel to mountain attractions outside the county center.

The villages inside Chengyang Eight Dong Villages are widely distributed, so using official scenic shuttle buses is recommended instead of unofficial private vehicles.

Danzhou Ancient Town can only be accessed by ferry. Vehicles cannot directly enter the island.

Before traveling to Gaoding, Dudong, and other mountain areas, always check weather conditions and avoid driving through mountain roads at night.

    Transportation Summary for Sanjiang Travel

Sanjiang Dong Autonomous County has developed a complete tourism transportation network centered on Sanjiang South Railway Station, supported by highways, county buses, scenic shuttle routes, and self-driving connections.

The county center is best explored by walking and shared electric bicycles. Chengyang Eight Dong Villages has the most convenient tourist transportation system and is the key attraction for first-time visitors. Buyang, Gaoding, and Batuan areas are better suited for self-driving or private transfers due to their mountainous locations. Danzhou Ancient Town offers a unique land-and-water travel experience through its ferry connection.

By selecting transportation according to travel time, budget, and travel style, visitors can efficiently experience Sanjiang’s Dong drum towers, wind and rain bridges, tea plantations, traditional villages, and riverside ancient towns, discovering one of China’s most representative ethnic cultural destinations.
