  • Fangchenggang Overview

Fangchenggang City (防城港市) is a prefecture-level city under Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, located in the southwestern coastal area of Guangxi and established as a city in 1993. Named after its port, Fangchenggang has developed into an important coastal and border city relying on maritime transportation, international trade and regional cooperation. The city covers an area of approximately 6,245.2 square kilometers and consists of Gangkou District (港口区), Fangcheng District (防城区), Dongxing City (东兴市) and Shangsi County (上思县). The municipal government is located in Gangkou District.

With a coastline of 538.55 kilometers and a 101-kilometer land border with Vietnam, Fangchenggang is one of China’s few cities that combines coastal, border and port advantages. It is also the only city in China connected with ASEAN countries through sea, land and river transportation, making it an important gateway of the Western Land-Sea New Corridor and a key node city along the Pinglu Canal Economic Belt.

Known as China’s Oxygen Capital, China’s Longevity City, China’s Egret Hometown and China’s Golden Camellia Hometown, Fangchenggang is also the only settlement area of the Jing ethnic group (京族) in China, giving the city distinctive marine ethnic culture and border characteristics.

    Geographic Location and Natural Environment

Fangchenggang is located on the southwestern end of China’s mainland coastline, facing the Beibu Gulf and lying south of the Tropic of Cancer. It borders Qinzhou (钦州) to the east, connects with Nanning (南宁) and Chongzuo (崇左) to the north, faces the Beibu Gulf to the south, and is separated from Mong Cai City (芒街市), Quang Ninh Province, Vietnam by the Beilun River.

The city features a diverse landscape combining mountains, sea and border areas. Its natural environment can be divided into three major geographical zones: the Shiwandashan Mountain Area (十万大山) in the north, the coastal hills and plains, and the Beibu Gulf coastal zone. This unique geographical structure creates a rich tourism environment featuring beaches, islands, mangrove forests, fishing villages, mountain forests and border landscapes.

The combination of marine ecosystems and mountain forests has given Fangchenggang excellent ecological advantages. The city has abundant forest resources, high air quality and rich negative oxygen ion resources, making it suitable for coastal holidays, ecological tourism and wellness travel.

Climate Characteristics and Best Travel Period

Fangchenggang belongs to a subtropical marine monsoon climate, with mild winters, long summers and abundant rainfall. The annual average temperature is around 22.5°C, with January temperatures generally between 12–15°C and July temperatures around 28–29°C.

Rainfall is plentiful, with annual precipitation reaching approximately 2,300 mm, mainly concentrated from May to October. From June to September, the city may be affected by typhoons and tropical weather systems. During February to April, coastal areas often experience humid weather and morning fog, creating unique seaside scenery.

The coastal areas remain warm throughout the year, while the Shiwandashan mountain area has a slightly cooler climate. The summer season is suitable for escaping heat in mountain forests, while autumn and winter provide comfortable conditions for coastal sightseeing, border exploration and cultural tours.

    Regional Connections and Transportation Advantages

Fangchenggang occupies an important strategic position connecting southwest China with ASEAN countries. Domestically, it links with Qinzhou, Nanning and Chongzuo, forming an integrated tourism and economic network with Guangxi’s major cities. Internationally, it faces Vietnam’s Quang Ninh Province and connects with Southeast Asian countries through maritime and border channels.

The city is an important part of the Beibu Gulf Coastal Tourism Belt, connecting eastward with Beihai and Qinzhou, northward with Nanning, and westward with Chongzuo Border Tourism Area. Its location makes Fangchenggang an ideal gateway for China–Vietnam cultural exchanges and ASEAN tourism cooperation.

    Transportation System

    Railway and High-Speed Rail

Fangchenggang has convenient railway connections with Guangxi’s major cities. The Nanfang Railway (南防铁路) connects the city with Nanning, while the Fangdong High-Speed Railway (防东高铁) links Fangchenggang with Dongxing and becomes China’s first high-speed railway directly reaching a China–Vietnam border city.

Fangchenggang North Railway Station (防城港北站) provides high-speed railway services to destinations such as Nanning, Guilin, Liuzhou and Guangzhou. The port railway system also supports sea-rail combined transportation, strengthening the city’s role as an international logistics hub.

    Highway and Self-Driving Routes

Fangchenggang has developed a complete road transportation network including the Qinzhou–Fangcheng Expressway, Fangchenggang–Dongxing Expressway and border highways. National Highway G219 passes through the border region and is one of the most attractive self-driving routes in Guangxi.

The Xiwan Cross-Sea Bridge (西湾跨海大桥) connects different urban areas and improves access to coastal attractions, fishing villages and scenic spots. The city is especially suitable for self-driving tourism routes combining beaches, border landscapes and ethnic villages.

    Ports and Border Crossings

Fangchenggang Port is one of the largest ports in western China and an important international maritime gateway. With numerous deep-water berths and shipping routes connecting more than 100 countries and regions, the port plays an important role in international trade.

The city has important border ports including Dongxing Port (东兴口岸) and Dongzhong Port (峒中口岸), supporting China–Vietnam trade, border tourism, cross-border shopping and cultural exchanges.

    Air Transportation

Fangchenggang currently has no civil airport. Visitors mainly rely on Nanning Wuxu International Airport (南宁吴圩国际机场) and Beihai Fucheng Airport (北海福成机场). Both airports are approximately 1–1.5 hours away by road, allowing convenient access for domestic and international travelers.

    Population and Ethnic Culture

    Population Overview

Fangchenggang has a permanent population of approximately 1.08 million people. The city is home to several ethnic groups, including Han, Zhuang, Jing and Yao communities. Ethnic minorities account for a significant proportion of the population, creating a multicultural environment.

The Jing ethnic group (京族) is the most distinctive cultural group in Fangchenggang. As China’s only marine ethnic group, the Jing people mainly live on the Jing Ethnic Three Islands (京族三岛), including Wanwei Island (万尾岛), Shanxin Island (山心岛) and Wutou Island (巫头岛).

    Cultural Heritage and Traditional Lifestyle

Fangchenggang has formed a unique border-sea cultural system combining marine traditions, ethnic heritage and frontier history.

    Marine Fishing Culture

The coastal areas preserve traditional fishing lifestyles, including fishing villages, seafood culture, tidal activities and mangrove ecological traditions. Fishing communities such as Leshan Ancient Fishing Village (簕山古渔村) represent the connection between local residents and the sea.

    Jing Ethnic Cultural Heritage

The Jing ethnic culture is one of Fangchenggang’s most valuable cultural resources. Traditional customs include the national intangible cultural heritage Ha Festival (哈节), the Single-string Instrument (独弦琴) and traditional fishing skills such as stilt fishing.

These cultural elements provide important resources for ethnic tourism, cultural study tours and international cultural exchanges.

    Border Historical Culture

Located on the China–Vietnam border, Fangchenggang preserves rich frontier history, including Bailong Ancient Fortress (白龙古炮台), Qing Dynasty boundary monuments, anti-French war historical sites and maritime transportation history related to China’s assistance to Vietnam.

    Mountain Ethnic Culture

The Shiwandashan region preserves traditional mountain cultures, including Zhuang Tianqin music (壮族天琴), tea-picking opera, Yao ethnic customs and golden camellia cultivation traditions. These cultural resources create opportunities for ethnic village visits, cultural research and ecological tourism.

    Economic Development Overview

Fangchenggang has developed an economic structure based on five major industries: port industry, logistics, border trade, characteristic agriculture and tourism services.

The coastal industrial economy focuses on steel, non-ferrous metals, new materials and grain processing. As an important western coastal port, Fangchenggang Port supports large-scale international logistics and bulk cargo transportation.

Border trade is another important economic sector. Dongxing has developed through China–Vietnam trade, border resident markets, cross-border processing and ASEAN cooperation.

Agricultural products with regional characteristics include golden camellia, star anise, cinnamon, oysters and golden pomfret, which have become important local brands. At the same time, tourism and wellness industries continue to grow through coastal vacations, ecological tourism and border experiences.

    Tourism Resources and Development Overview

The region is suitable for hiking, ecological education, nature photography and slow travel, offering a contrast to the coastal landscapes.

    Fangchenggang Tourism Development Features

Fangchenggang is moving from traditional sightseeing tourism toward immersive tourism experiences based on culture, ecology and local lifestyles. The city focuses on developing four major tourism themes: Jing ethnic intangible cultural heritage, mangrove ecological tourism, border culture experiences and coastal fishing village life.

With its unique combination of ocean, mountains, islands, forests and border culture, Fangchenggang is suitable for China–Vietnam border tours, ASEAN cultural exchanges, marine ecological study tours, family vacations, self-driving exploration and wellness travel.
