  • Fangchenggang Culture

Located at the southwestern end of mainland China’s coastline, at the southern foothills of the Shiwandashan Mountains and along the China–Vietnam border, Fangchenggang is a unique cultural region where maritime civilization, frontier history, ethnic traditions and ecological culture meet. The city has experienced the development of ancient coastal trade routes, southern frontier governance, maritime defense systems, border exchanges and multi-ethnic integration, forming a distinctive cultural landscape combining the sea, border, mountains and ethnic communities.

The historical and cultural system of Fangchenggang can be summarized into five major themes: Fubo frontier culture, Danjia fishing and maritime culture, Jing ethnic marine civilization, border trade and overseas Chinese exchange culture, and Zhuang–Yao mountain folk traditions. These resources provide strong foundations for cultural tourism, international study tours, anthropology research, ethnic photography and heritage exploration.

The city’s cultural resources are distributed across four major cultural zones. Gangkou District represents coastal fishing traditions, maritime trade and urban marine culture. Fangcheng District preserves ancient coastal defense heritage, historical towns and Yao ethnic traditions. Dongxing City is the most distinctive cultural area, featuring China’s only Jing ethnic community, border monuments and China–Vietnam cultural exchanges. Shangsi County focuses on mountain ecology, agricultural traditions and Zhuang–Yao rural culture.

Gangkou District|Danjia Maritime Culture and Coastal Fishing Civilization

    Coastal History and Cultural Background

Gangkou District is the modern administrative and transportation center of Fangchenggang, but its cultural roots are closely connected with the Beibu Gulf maritime civilization. For generations, local communities developed fishing techniques, tidal knowledge, seafood processing traditions and coastal lifestyles adapted to the marine environment.

The area represents the historical relationship between people and the ocean, where fishing villages, ports and maritime trade shaped the local identity. Today, Gangkou District remains an important cultural gateway for understanding Fangchenggang’s marine history.

    Historical Sites and Cultural Heritage

Important cultural resources include Fangchenggang Museum (防城港市博物馆), Fubo Cultural Park (伏波文化园), Beigang Ancient Village (北港故里), Qisha Ancient Fishing Port (企沙古渔港) and Sheshan Neolithic Site (社山新石器遗址). These sites reflect different stages of regional development, from prehistoric settlement to ancient maritime activities and modern port construction.

Among them, Leshan Ancient Fishing Village (簕山古渔村) is one of the most representative coastal heritage sites. The village preserves traditional fishing village structures, ancient coastal landscapes and historical living environments, allowing visitors to experience traditional Danjia fishing culture and coastal village life.

    Intangible Heritage and Cultural Experiences

The cultural highlights of Gangkou District include Danjia fishing songs, traditional fishing skills, seafood processing techniques and sea-related folk customs. Visitors can experience traditional fishing lifestyles, coastal food culture and the relationship between local communities and marine resources.

This area is especially suitable for marine culture research, coastal geography study tours, photography programs and human ecology projects.

Fangcheng District|Ancient Coastal Defense, Historical Towns and Ethnic Mountain Culture

    Historical Background and Cultural Features

Fangcheng District has long been an important frontier region connecting coastal defense, transportation routes and ethnic communities. Its history is closely related to ancient maritime security, border governance and cultural exchanges between different ethnic groups.

The district combines coastal historical remains with mountain ethnic traditions, creating a diverse cultural area where military heritage, traditional villages and folk customs coexist.

Coastal Defense Heritage and Historical Sites

The most important historical site is Bailong Ancient Fort Group (白龙古炮台群), which preserves the coastal defense history of the Qing Dynasty and demonstrates the strategic importance of the Beibu Gulf coastline.

The Tanpeng Canal (潭蓬运河) represents an ancient transportation and water engineering project, reflecting historical connections between inland areas and coastal regions. Na Liang Ancient Town (那良古镇) preserves traditional streets, historical buildings and cultural memories connected with frontier development.

Other historical resources include Fangcheng Ancient Street and Luofu Catholic Church, showing the multicultural development of the region.

Yao and Zhuang Ethnic Cultural Heritage

Fangcheng District is also an important area for Daban Yao culture. The Abao Festival, recognized as regional intangible cultural heritage, preserves traditional Yao celebrations, folk songs, Panwang worship, ethnic costumes and community gatherings.

The district also maintains Zhuang cultural traditions including Tianqin music, folk songs and traditional festivals.

The area is suitable for history research, ethnic studies, traditional architecture exploration and border culture study tours.

Dongxing City|Jing Ethnic Marine Civilization and Border Culture Center

Dongxing is particularly suitable for anthropology research, ethnic studies, international relations programs, art field studies and overseas Chinese heritage tours.

Shangsi County|Shiwandashan Mountain Culture and Rural Heritage

    Mountain Civilization and Ecological Culture

Located in the northern part of Fangchenggang, Shangsi County developed a mountain-based agricultural civilization influenced by the Shiwandashan Mountains. Unlike the coastal areas, local culture is closely connected with forests, farming traditions and mountain communities.

The region preserves traditional knowledge related to forest resources, agricultural production and ecological adaptation.

    Historical and Folk Culture Resources

Cultural resources include Shiwandashan Ancient Trade Route (十万大山古商道), traditional villages, historical temple remains and the cultural landscape around Butou Hot Spring (布透温泉).

Shangsi also preserves Zhuang folk songs, Yao Panwang Festival traditions and Golden Camellia cultivation techniques. These traditions demonstrate the relationship between mountain communities and natural resources.

The county is ideal for forest ecology education, agricultural heritage research, wellness tourism and ethnic village experiences.

    Ethnic Culture of Fangchenggang

Jing Ethnic Culture|China’s Unique Marine Minority Heritage

The Jing ethnic group is the most representative cultural symbol of Fangchenggang. Their ancestors migrated from coastal areas around present-day Vietnam and developed a unique maritime lifestyle in the Beibu Gulf region.

Their traditions include Ha Festival rituals, fishing culture, single-string instrument music, traditional food production and coastal village customs. Jing culture provides rare opportunities to study the relationship between ethnicity, marine environments and cultural inheritance.

Zhuang Culture|Songs, Festivals and Traditional Lifestyle

The Zhuang people are widely distributed throughout Fangchenggang and maintain rich cultural traditions including the March 3 Festival, Tianqin music, mountain songs, five-color sticky rice and bamboo dancing.

The annual China–Vietnam border cultural exchange activities around Dongxing demonstrate the long history of communication between communities on both sides of the border.
