  • Chongzuo Transportation

Chongzuo City (崇左市) is located in southwestern Guangxi along the China–Vietnam border. Due to its wide geographical area and scattered attractions across Jiangzhou District (江州区), Daxin County (大新县), Ningming County (宁明县), Pingxiang City (凭祥市), Longzhou County (龙州县) and other regions, transportation planning is essential for travelers.

Unlike large Chinese tourism cities, Chongzuo does not have a subway system. Its tourism transportation mainly depends on high-speed rail, highways, tourist shuttle buses, private transfers, self-driving, motorcycle touring and short-distance cycling. The most convenient way to explore Chongzuo is usually combining high-speed rail arrival with self-driving or private transportation between scenic areas.

    External Transportation to Chongzuo

    High-Speed Railway and Airport Connections

The main transportation hub is Chongzuo South Railway Station (崇左南站), which connects Chongzuo with Nanning East Railway Station (南宁东站) and other major cities. Travelers can reach Chongzuo easily from Nanning, making it the most popular arrival route for domestic and international visitors.

Since Chongzuo has no civilian airport, most overseas travelers arrive through Nanning Wuxu International Airport (南宁吴圩国际机场) and continue by high-speed rail, airport shuttle bus or private transfer. The airport-to-Chongzuo route is convenient and suitable for international tour groups, family travelers and customized tours.

    Highway Network and Self-Driving Access

Chongzuo has developed a complete highway network connecting the city, counties, border areas and major scenic spots. The most famous route is the Hena Expressway (合那高速), known as one of China’s most beautiful highways. The road passes through spectacular karst mountains and connects important tourism areas including Mingshi Pastoral (明仕田园) and Detian Transnational Waterfall (德天跨国瀑布).

The Nanyou Expressway (南友高速) provides direct access from Nanning to Pingxiang City (凭祥市) and Friendship Pass (友谊关), while other highways connect Longzhou County (龙州县), Tiandeng County (天等县) and surrounding ecological tourism areas.

For travelers planning a multi-day Chongzuo trip, self-driving is the most flexible option because many scenic areas are located in mountainous or rural areas where public transportation is limited.

Urban Transportation and Scenic Area Connections

    Public Transportation in Chongzuo City

The urban area of Jiangzhou District (江州区) has relatively convenient transportation. City buses connect major attractions such as Taiping Ancient City (太平古城), Chongzuo Stone Forest (崇左石景林) and Zuojiang Leaning Pagoda (左江斜塔).

Shared electric bicycles are suitable for short-distance sightseeing within the city, especially for visitors staying near Taiping Ancient City.

Tourist Shuttle Buses and Private Transfers

For independent travelers without a car, tourist shuttle buses from Chongzuo South Railway Station provide access to major attractions including:

    • Detian Transnational Waterfall
    • Mingshi Pastoral
    • Ningming Huashan Rock Paintings (宁明花山岩画)

However, remote attractions still require additional transfers. Private cars and chartered vehicles remain the most convenient choice for visitors who want to combine several scenic areas in one journey.

Private transfers are especially recommended for families, senior travelers, international groups and photography travelers because local drivers are familiar with border roads, mountain routes and hidden viewpoints.

Transportation Guide for Major Scenic Areas

    Detian Transnational Waterfall Transportation

Detian Transnational Waterfall (德天跨国瀑布) is located in Shuolong Town (硕龙镇), Daxin County and is one of Chongzuo’s most popular destinations.

Visitors can reach the waterfall by tourist shuttle bus from Chongzuo South Railway Station, private transfer or self-driving. Driving from Chongzuo city takes around 1.5 hours, while the journey from Mingshi Pastoral takes about 30 minutes.

Inside the scenic area, visitors need to use the official sightseeing transportation system to reach the waterfall viewing area. Bamboo rafting provides a closer view of the waterfall and the China–Vietnam border landscape.

Because it is located in a border zone, drone flights are strictly controlled. Visitors should follow local regulations and avoid unauthorized aerial photography.

    Mingshi Pastoral Transportation

Mingshi Pastoral (明仕田园) is one of the best destinations in Chongzuo for cycling and slow travel.

It can be reached by tourist shuttle bus, self-driving or private transfer. The journey from Chongzuo city takes about one hour, and the route from Detian Waterfall takes around 30 minutes.

The surrounding countryside roads are flat and suitable for bicycles and electric scooters. Travelers can explore rice fields, karst peaks, bridges and villages at a relaxed pace, making it ideal for families and photography enthusiasts.

    Huashan Rock Paintings Transportation

Ningming Huashan Rock Paintings (宁明花山岩画) is located in Ningming County and is a World Heritage cultural destination.

Visitors usually travel to the Huashan pier by private car, tourist shuttle or bus transfer from Ningming town. The main viewing method is by boat because the rock paintings are located on cliffs along the Zuojiang River.

The site is especially suitable for cultural study tours, archaeology enthusiasts and international educational groups.

Taiping Ancient City and Urban Attractions

Taiping Ancient City (太平古城) is located in the urban area and is the easiest attraction to visit.

Visitors can reach it by city bus, taxi or shared electric bike. The scenic area is mainly explored on foot, especially in the evening when lanterns, traditional architecture and local performances create a strong Zhuang cultural atmosphere.

    Friendship Pass Transportation

Friendship Pass (友谊关) in Pingxiang is one of China’s most famous border landmarks.

Travelers can reach Pingxiang by railway or highway and continue to the scenic area by taxi or private vehicle. The route from Chongzuo city takes about one to one and a half hours.

Visitors should carry identification documents and follow border management regulations. Drone flights and unauthorized border activities are prohibited.

    Self-Driving Travel Guide

    Recommended Self-Driving Routes

Self-driving is the best way to explore Chongzuo’s border landscapes.

    A classic two-day route is:

Chongzuo City → Mingshi Pastoral → Detian Transnational Waterfall → Shuolong Town → Chongzuo City

This route combines karst mountains, rural scenery and border landscapes.

A deeper four-day route can extend to:

Chongzuo City → Mingshi Pastoral → Detian Waterfall → China–Vietnam Border Road → Friendship Pass → Huashan Rock Paintings → Chongzuo City

This route is suitable for photography, family holidays and cultural exploration.

    Driving Tips

Highways and county roads are generally in good condition, but mountain roads around border areas may have sharp curves and limited visibility. During the rainy season, travelers should watch for slippery roads and possible falling rocks.

It is recommended to refuel before entering remote border areas, especially when traveling through mountain villages. Travelers should avoid using unfamiliar rural shortcuts suggested by navigation apps because some roads may be narrow or difficult.

    Motorcycle and Cycling Travel Guide

    Border Motorcycle Touring Routes

Chongzuo is an excellent destination for motorcycle enthusiasts. The S325 China–Vietnam Border Road is one of the most attractive motorcycle routes in Guangxi.

    Popular routes include:

Pingxiang → Friendship Pass → Border Villages → Detian Waterfall → Daxin

Riders can experience border scenery, karst mountains, rivers and ethnic villages along the way.

Motorcycle travelers should prepare helmets, rain gear and protective equipment. Identification documents are necessary because border checkpoints may require inspection.

    Cycling Routes

Cycling is mainly recommended for short-distance countryside experiences.

The best route is the Mingshi Pastoral Cycling Route, where visitors can ride through rice fields, villages and karst landscapes. The roads are relatively flat, with many photo stops and local restaurants.

The Heishui River (黑水河) area is another suitable short cycling destination, especially during the spring flowering season.

Long-distance cycling between counties is not recommended because of mountain roads, heavy vehicles and limited roadside facilities.

    Seasonal Transportation Recommendations

    Spring: March to May

Spring is suitable for countryside driving and photography. Rain and mist create beautiful scenery around karst mountains, but mountain roads may become slippery. Drivers and cyclists should prepare rain gear.

    Summer: June to August

Summer is the best season for viewing Detian Waterfall because water levels are higher. However, heavy rain may affect mountain roads and outdoor activities. Early departures are recommended to avoid heat and crowds.

    Autumn: September to November

Autumn is the best overall travel season. Roads are dry, visibility is excellent and all transportation methods work well. Self-driving and motorcycle routes offer the best scenery during this period.

    Winter: December to February

Winter is suitable for comfortable sightseeing with fewer tourists. Mountain areas may have morning fog, so drivers should avoid traveling too early.

    Recommended Transportation Plans

    One-Day Trip by High-Speed Rail

Travelers without a car can take high-speed rail to Chongzuo South Station, join a tourist shuttle to Mingshi Pastoral or Detian Waterfall, and return to the city for evening sightseeing at Taiping Ancient City.

    Two-Day Self-Driving Route

Day 1: Chongzuo → Mingshi Pastoral → countryside cycling → overnight near Mingshi.

Day 2: Mingshi → Detian Waterfall → return to Chongzuo city.

    Three-Day Border Motorcycle Route

Day 1: Chongzuo → Mingshi Pastoral → Heishui River.

Day 2: Detian Waterfall → border roads → Friendship Pass.

Day 3: Pingxiang → Huashan Rock Paintings → Chongzuo.

    Transportation Safety and Travel Tips

Travelers should avoid unofficial low-price tours and unlicensed vehicles around transport stations. Remote scenic areas often have limited evening transportation, so accommodation locations should be planned carefully.

Border areas require special attention. Visitors should carry passports or identification documents, avoid unauthorized drone use, never cross restricted areas and do not purchase illegal border goods.

During the rainy season, avoid staying near cliffs or riverbanks for long periods. For motorcycle and cycling trips, always prepare sun protection, rain protection and basic repair equipment.
