Zhongshan Education

Zhongshan (中山) has developed an education system that combines public-school accessibility, private-school diversity, vocational training, higher education and Greater Bay Area exchange programmes. Unlike cities divided into conventional county-level districts, Zhongshan directly administers its towns and subdistricts. Educational resources are therefore distributed across central Shiqi (石岐), East District (东区), Cuiheng and Nanlang (翠亨／南朗), Torch Development Zone (火炬开发区), Sanxiang (三乡), Xiaolan (小榄), Guzhen (古镇) and other specialised industrial towns.

The city’s educational character is closely connected with its history and economy. Cuiheng provides nationally important resources related to Dr. Sun Yat-sen (孙中山), Shiqi preserves Xiangshan overseas Chinese culture, Torch Development Zone concentrates universities and scientific research platforms, while Xiaolan, Guzhen and Dachong (大涌) support study programmes based on light industry, lighting design and mahogany craftsmanship.

For international students, overseas Chinese youth and Hong Kong–Macao school groups, Zhongshan offers more than conventional campus visits. A study journey can combine modern Chinese history, overseas Chinese heritage, Cantonese food production, industrial design, traditional medicine, rural labour education and student-to-student cultural exchange.

Education System in Zhongshan

Zhongshan follows a dual system in which public schools provide the foundation of compulsory and senior secondary education, while private schools offer boarding education, foreign-language programmes, integrated primary-to-secondary education and other specialised curricula.

The city has continued to expand public education capacity. During 2025, Zhongshan built five public kindergartens and completed nine new, expanded or renovated public primary and secondary school projects, adding nearly 13,000 places. Schools such as Zhongshan Memorial Secondary School (中山纪念中学), Zhongshan No. 1 Middle School (中山市第一中学), Zhongshan Overseas Chinese Secondary School (中山市华侨中学) and Zhongshan Experimental Secondary School (中山市实验中学) serve as prominent municipal institutions.

Public primary and secondary schools are also distributed throughout every town and subdistrict. The official 2025–2026 city school register includes more than 300 public and private primary, secondary, vocational and special-education institutions.

Private and Internationally Oriented Education

Zhongshan’s private education sector includes boarding schools, twelve-year schools covering primary through senior secondary education, bilingual programmes and foreign-language schools.

Current officially registered private institutions include Zhongshan Di Yin School (中山市迪茵公学) in Sanjiao Town (三角镇), Zhongshan Guangdong Bowen School (中山市广东博文学校) in Torch Development Zone, Zhongshan Sanxin School (中山市三鑫学校) in Sanxiang, Zhongshan Xiwan Foreign Language School (中山市西湾外国语学校) in Cuiheng New Area and Zhongshan–Hong Kong English School (中山市中港英文学校) in Wuguishan. Their locations and school structures are confirmed in the city’s current education register.

These schools can provide useful settings for international exchange, but campus access is not equivalent to public tourism. Formal visits normally require an institutional invitation, an agreed educational purpose and advance approval from the host school.

Education Groups and Shared Resources

Zhongshan promotes school-group development and cooperation between established urban schools and newer schools in developing towns.

Education groups allow experienced institutions to share teacher development, management systems, curriculum design and teaching resources with member schools. This approach is particularly important in areas experiencing rapid population growth, including Cuiheng New Area, Qijiang New City (岐江新城) and Torch Development Zone.

The model also supports a more balanced distribution of public education, reducing the difference between the traditional city centre and newly developed communities.

New Schools and Educational Development Areas

Cuiheng New Area is one of Zhongshan’s fastest-growing education zones. Cuiya School (中山市翠雅学校), the area’s first public nine-year school, entered operation in 2025 and added 1,620 public-school places. The city is also advancing other school projects to serve Ma’an Island (马鞍岛), Nanlang and surrounding new communities.

Educational expansion is also continuing in East District, Torch Development Zone and other urban-growth areas. Newly constructed campuses generally place greater emphasis on laboratories, sports facilities, digital classrooms, libraries and spaces for comprehensive practical education.

These modern campuses may be suitable for architecture, education-management and urban-development study programmes when official school access has been approved.

Higher Education in Zhongshan

Zhongshan’s higher education system includes undergraduate institutions, public vocational colleges, an open university and scientific research institutes.

University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Zhongshan Institute (电子科技大学中山学院) focuses on applied undergraduate education and has links with Zhongshan’s electronics, information technology and manufacturing sectors.

Its academic and industry platforms make it relevant to programmes covering digital technology, electronic engineering, entrepreneurship and cooperation between universities and local businesses.

Campus visits, laboratory access and student exchange sessions require prior institutional approval.

Guangdong Pharmaceutical University, Zhongshan Campus

Guangdong Pharmaceutical University, Zhongshan Campus (广东药科大学中山校区) supports education and research related to pharmacy, medicine, health sciences and biotechnology.

Its presence complements Zhongshan’s biomedicine industry and can support specialist programmes on pharmaceutical education, public health and the development of health-related industries.

City authorities have highlighted its food-quality and food-safety training facilities as part of Zhongshan’s specialised vocational education resources.

Guangdong Polytechnic Institute, Zhongshan Campus

Guangdong Polytechnic Institute, Zhongshan Campus (广东理工职业学院中山校区) contributes to the city’s vocational and applied higher-education network.

Programmes may be linked with engineering technology, modern services, digital applications and occupational education.

Zhongshan Open University

Zhongshan Open University (中山开放大学) supports continuing education, adult learning, vocational development and lifelong education.

It is more relevant to professional-training and community-education programmes than to conventional full-time international campus tours.

Changchun University of Science and Technology Zhongshan Institute

Changchun University of Science and Technology Zhongshan Institute (长春理工大学中山研究院) is an important scientific research and postgraduate training platform in Torch Development Zone.

It was established as Zhongshan’s first joint master’s and doctoral education and training base in a high-technology field. Its research focuses strongly on optics, optoelectronics, precision equipment and the industrial application of scientific research. The institute has developed research teams and laboratories while using a dual-supervisor model that links university researchers with enterprise specialists.

For advanced university groups, the institute can support discussions on postgraduate training, technology transfer, laboratory research and the relationship between science and industrial production. Access to working laboratories must be approved in advance and is subject to research confidentiality and safety requirements.

International and Hong Kong–Macao Educational Exchange

Zhongshan’s historical relationship with overseas Chinese communities and its location in the Greater Bay Area create favourable conditions for school exchange.

International education programmes commonly focus on Chinese language, modern history, traditional culture, student leadership, sports, performing arts and practical learning.

Overseas Chinese Education

Zhongshan Overseas Chinese Secondary School (中山市华侨中学) is a prominent public school with a strong overseas Chinese identity. Its history is closely linked with overseas Chinese support for education in Zhongshan.

Sister-School Exchange

School partnerships between Zhongshan, Hong Kong and Macao may include online classes, campus visits, student performances, sports, labour education and traditional craft activities.

The school’s location creates a natural connection between formal education and the study of modern Chinese history. Exchange programmes can combine campus activities with the Sun Yat-sen Hometown Tourist Area (孙中山故里旅游区), Cuiheng Historic Village (翠亨古村) and the Museum of the Former Residence of Dr. Sun Yat-sen (孙中山故居纪念馆).

The school is a working campus, so educational exchanges require an invitation and confirmed schedule.

Zhongshan No. 1 Middle School

Zhongshan No. 1 Middle School (中山市第一中学) is a major municipal public secondary school with campuses serving central Zhongshan.

It represents the city’s established urban public-education system and may be appropriate for approved programmes involving classroom observation, student dialogue, sports or cultural presentations.

Zhongshan Overseas Chinese Secondary School

Zhongshan Overseas Chinese Secondary School has junior and senior secondary campuses in Shiqi.

Its overseas Chinese history, Chinese-language education role and cultural heritage activities make it one of Zhongshan’s most suitable schools for approved overseas Chinese youth exchange programmes.

Zhongshan Experimental Secondary School

Zhongshan Experimental Secondary School (中山市实验中学) is a municipal public secondary school in East District.

The school has experience in boarding education and multicultural student management. It can provide a relevant case study for programmes focusing on education equality, campus life and cultural integration.

Shiqi and the Historic City

Shiqi has one of Zhongshan’s most established basic-education environments. Schools are surrounded by museums, historic streets and overseas Chinese commercial heritage, allowing campus exchange to be combined with urban cultural study.

Representative schools include Shiqi Central Primary School (中山市石岐中心小学), Yang Xianyi Middle School (中山市杨仙逸中学) and Zhongshan Overseas Chinese Secondary School.

The official school register places Zhongshan–Hong Kong English School (中山市中港英文学校) in Wuguishan rather than Shiqi. It is therefore better grouped with the Wuguishan educational area when planning transportation and campus visits.

Shiqi Study Resources

A Shiqi educational route can connect Zhongshan Museum (中山市博物馆), Sunwen West Road (孙文西路), Xiangshan Commercial Culture Museum (香山商业文化博物馆) and Qijiang Park (岐江公园).

Torch Development Zone is Zhongshan’s strongest science, vocational education and industrial-study area.

Private schools include Guangdong Bowen School, which is officially registered in Torch Development Zone rather than Xiaolan.

The zone is suitable for programmes on advanced manufacturing, vocational skills, food science, optics, biomedicine, entrepreneurship and industrial transformation.

Sanxiang Town

Sanxiang combines established schools, ancient villages, food heritage and wellness resources.

Representative schools include Guishan Middle School (中山市桂山中学), Guanghou Central Primary School (光后中心小学) and Zhongshan Sanxin School.

The official school register confirms that Sanxin School is a private twelve-year school in Sanxiang, rather than in Xiaolan.

Educational programmes can combine school exchange with Yongmo Ancient Village (雍陌古村), Sanxiang tea cakes (三乡茶果), traditional handicrafts, Zhan Garden (詹园) and hot-spring wellness culture.

Xiaolan Town

The current official register uses the name Zhongshan Xiaolan Middle School. The alternative title “Zhongshan Foreign Language School” should not be used as its primary current official name unless confirmed directly by the school.

The town’s educational resources include the Xiaolan Chrysanthemum Fair (小榄菊花会), creative product manufacturing, food production and light-industry enterprises.

Sanjiao Town

Zhongshan Di Yin School (中山市迪茵公学) is a private twelve-year boarding school in Sanjiao Town. Its current registered status and location are confirmed by the municipal education authority.

The school’s boarding environment, sports facilities and comprehensive education spaces may support approved student exchanges, leadership camps and practical-learning programmes.

Banfu Town

Banfu has public primary and secondary schools as well as the newly established Zhongshan Huangzhong Senior High School (中山市黄中高级中学).

The school was being prepared for formal enrolment in 2026 and had entered local education-development planning by that year.

Because it is a new institution, all descriptions of its curriculum, external partnerships and visitor capacity should be confirmed directly with the school before publication.

Other Representative Schools

Other notable schools include Zhongshan No. 2 Middle School (中山市第二中学) in Huangpu Town (黄圃镇), Zhongshan Huachen Experimental Secondary School (中山市华辰实验中学) in Gangkou (港口), Yanzhou Middle School (中山市烟洲中学) in West District, Guzhen Senior Secondary School (中山市古镇高级中学) and Minzhong Deheng School (中山市民众德恒学校).

Walk through Cuiheng Historic Village to observe traditional houses and the cultural environment of late Qing Xiangshan.

The group then travels to central Shiqi for dinner and an evening walk beside the Qijiang River (岐江河).

Visit the Chubang Soy Sauce Culture Museum in the morning to study fermentation, food safety, traditional knowledge and modern production.

Day 1: Historic Shiqi
