History and Administrative Development
From Duanzhou to Zhaoqing
The area around present-day Zhaoqing has been an important administrative, military and commercial center along the Xijiang River for centuries. Duanzhou became the historical core of the city and developed as a regional seat of government in western Guangdong.
In 1118, during the Northern Song dynasty, the imperial court renamed the prefecture Zhaoqing, a name conveying the idea of an auspicious beginning. This historical identity remains visible in the old city, the Song City Wall (宋城墙), ancient administrative buildings, temples and the cliff inscriptions around Seven Star Crags (七星岩).
Modern prefecture-level Zhaoqing was established in 1988. The city now administers:
- Duanzhou District (端州区)
- Dinghu District (鼎湖区)
- Gaoyao District (高要区)
- Guangning County (广宁县)
- Huaiji County (怀集县)
- Deqing County (德庆县)
- Fengkai County (封开县)
- Sihui City (四会市)
These administrative areas differ substantially in landscape and economy. Duanzhou and Dinghu form the principal urban and tourism center, while Gaoyao supports manufacturing and agriculture. Sihui is known for jade processing, and the western and northern counties contain forests, mountains, traditional villages and agricultural resources.
Geography and Regional Location
Zhaoqing lies in the middle and lower reaches of the Xijiang River, in western Guangdong and on the western side of the Greater Bay Area.
It borders Foshan (佛山) and Jiangmen (江门) to the east and southeast, Yunfu (云浮) to the southwest, Wuzhou (梧州) and Hezhou (贺州) in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region (广西壮族自治区) to the west and northwest, and Qingyuan (清远) to the north and northeast.
This location gives Zhaoqing two important regional roles. It forms part of the Pearl River Delta economy while also serving as a transport and logistics gateway toward Guangxi, Guizhou, Yunnan and other parts of southwestern China.
Terrain and Landforms
Zhaoqing’s terrain is generally higher in the northwest and lower in the southeast. Mountains and hills dominate much of the municipal territory, while river valleys, basins and alluvial plains extend along the Xijiang River and its tributaries.
Northern and Northwestern Mountains
Huaiji and Guangning contain extensive mountain landscapes, deep valleys, bamboo forests and river systems. The highest point in Zhaoqing is Dachouding Peak (大稠顶) in Huaiji County, reaching approximately 1,626 metres above sea level.
These mountain areas are cooler than central Duanzhou, especially at night and during winter cold spells. They support forest ecology, bamboo production, traditional villages, hiking and rural study programs.
Central Xijiang Valley
The Xijiang River flows across Zhaoqing from west to east, creating fertile plains and transportation corridors.
Agriculture, settlements and industrial development are concentrated along the river and its tributaries. The Xijiang is also an important inland freight route connecting western Guangdong and Guangxi with the Pearl River Delta.
Karst Landscapes
The most recognizable karst scenery is found around Seven Star Crags, where limestone peaks rise from lakes close to central Duanzhou.
Karst landforms also appear in parts of Dinghu, Huaiji and Fengkai. These landscapes provide resources for geological study, cave research, watershed education and landscape photography.
Climate and Best Travel Seasons
Zhaoqing has a humid southern subtropical monsoon climate. The city is warm for most of the year, with an average annual temperature of approximately 22°C.
Long-term rainfall totals differ by observation station, elevation and statistical period, but annual precipitation is generally around 1,600–1,900 millimetres. Spring and summer receive most of the rainfall, while autumn is usually drier and more stable.
Spring: March to May
Spring is warm, humid and increasingly rainy. Moist air can create fog, damp floors and persistent drizzle, particularly from March into April.
Mountain valleys and forest areas may be covered in mist, creating atmospheric scenery. However, stone paths and hiking trails can become slippery.
Summer: June to September
Summer is hot and humid, with frequent thunderstorms, torrential rain and occasional typhoon effects.
Mountain streams, waterfalls and river valleys carry more water during this season, but flash floods and landslides can occur after heavy rain. Outdoor study groups should follow local weather warnings and avoid entering unmanaged streams.
Autumn: October to November
Autumn is generally the best season to visit Zhaoqing. Temperatures are comfortable, rainfall decreases and visibility improves.
This period is suitable for Seven Star Crags, Dinghu Mountain, ancient-city walks, county-level road trips, cycling, photography and outdoor educational programs.
Winter: December to February
Winter is usually mild and relatively dry. Cold fronts can produce short periods of low temperatures, especially in Huaiji and other northern mountain areas.
Central Zhaoqing rarely experiences severe winter weather, but mountain mornings can be cold. Travelers should carry a warm outer layer when visiting northern counties.
Population and Ethnic Diversity
Zhaoqing had approximately 4.1338 million permanent residents at the end of 2024, with an urbanization rate of about 53.7%. Population is concentrated in Duanzhou, Gaoyao, Sihui and the eastern parts of the city.
The population is predominantly Han Chinese, while communities from several ethnic groups live throughout the city. Most minority residents are dispersed among urban neighborhoods, industrial areas and rural communities.
Xiashuai Zhuang and Yao Ethnic Township
Xiashuai Zhuang and Yao Ethnic Township (下帅壮族瑶族乡) in Huaiji County is Zhaoqing’s only officially designated ethnic township and one of Guangdong Province’s seven ethnic townships.
Zhuang and Yao residents form a large majority of the local population. The township preserves distinctive clothing, food, songs, dances, festivals and rural architecture. Local cultural displays and community activities also introduce the history of ethnic interaction in northern Guangdong.
Xiashuai can support educational themes such as:
- Zhuang and Yao cultural traditions;
- ethnic-community development;
- rural revitalization;
- mountain agriculture;
- community tourism;
- cultural preservation and modernization.
Public performances and community visits are not available every day. Study groups should arrange access, interpretation and village activities in advance.
Cultural Identity of Zhaoqing
Zhaoqing is recognized as a national historical and cultural city. Its culture developed through interaction among indigenous Lingnan traditions, Central Plains administration, Cantonese culture, Xijiang water communities, ethnic groups and overseas influences.
Five cultural themes are particularly important to understanding the city.
Duan Inkstone Culture
One of China’s Four Famous Inkstones
The Duan Inkstone (端砚) is traditionally ranked among China’s Four Famous Inkstones and is Zhaoqing’s most recognizable cultural product.
Duan inkstone production began more than a thousand years ago. Artisans select stone, design patterns, carve surfaces, polish the inkstone and evaluate its texture, color, markings and ability to produce ink.
The Duan Inkstone Making Techniques (端砚制作技艺) were included in China’s first national intangible cultural heritage list in 2006.
Educational Value
A Duan inkstone study program can introduce:
- Chinese calligraphy and scholar culture;
- geology and stone identification;
- quarry history;
- traditional carving;
- product design;
- cultural heritage protection;
- contemporary creative industries.
Visitors can combine the Duan Inkstone Museum, workshops and recognized cultural enterprises. Access to active studios and hands-on carving requires advance coordination.
Flagship Intangible Cultural Heritage Traditions
Zhaoqing has numerous protected traditions. Three national-level heritage projects are particularly important to its cultural-tourism identity.
Duan Inkstone Making Techniques
The craft combines geological knowledge, visual design, carving and Chinese literary culture.
It is one of the most suitable Zhaoqing heritage themes for international students because the finished inkstone can be connected with calligraphy, painting and the historical education of Chinese scholars.
Yuecheng Dragon Mother Belief and Birthday Festival
The Dragon Mother Belief (龙母信俗) is centered on the Dragon Mother Ancestral Temple (龙母祖庙) in Yuecheng Town (悦城镇), Deqing County.
The principal celebrations traditionally include the Dragon Mother’s Birthday period during the first to eighth days of the fifth lunar month and another major observance during the first to eighth days of the eighth lunar month.
Activities may include worship, incense offerings, processions, Cantonese opera, folk performances and community markets. The tradition is connected with beliefs surrounding the Xijiang River, flood protection, family values and regional identity.
Visitors should respect religious practices and avoid interrupting worship. Public programs, traffic controls and visitor routes vary each year.
Gaoyao Spring She Festival
The Gaoyao Spring She Festival (高要春社) is a traditional agricultural and community celebration held in villages across Gaoyao.
Festival activities begin around the second day of the second lunar month and continue according to the schedules of different villages. They may include deity worship, dragon and lion dancing, Cantonese opera, village banquets, markets and community gatherings.
The festival reflects traditional agricultural society, village organization, ancestral relationships and prayers for favorable weather and harvests.
A study visit should focus on an officially announced village program rather than assuming every Gaoyao community celebrates on the same day.
Ancient Duanzhou and Historical Heritage
Song City Wall
The Zhaoqing Ancient City Wall (肇庆古城墙), commonly called the Song City Wall, was first constructed in the Northern Song dynasty.
The wall has undergone repeated repairs but retains an approximately 2.8-kilometre historic circuit. It is one of the most important surviving city-wall systems in Guangdong and provides evidence of traditional urban defense, administration and construction technology.
Bao Zheng in Duanzhou
Bao Zheng (包拯), one of the best-known officials in Chinese history, served as an administrator in Duanzhou during the Northern Song dynasty.
Local historical interpretation links him with clean government, water management, education and the regulation of tribute inkstones. These stories provide useful material for discussing the relationship between historical memory and public ethics.
Matteo Ricci and Early Sino-Western Exchange
Italian Jesuit Matteo Ricci (利玛窦) and Michele Ruggieri (罗明坚) established an important early mission in Zhaoqing during the late sixteenth century.
Zhaoqing became Ricci’s first major inland base in China and an important setting for early exchange involving geography, astronomy, language, religion and European scientific knowledge.
This history can support study programs on:
- early world maps;
- translation and language learning;
- Chinese and European astronomy;
- cross-cultural communication;
- religious encounters;
- the Maritime Silk Road.
Other Historic Sites
The old city and surrounding area also contain:
- Mei’an Temple (梅庵)
- Yuejiang Tower (阅江楼)
- Liqiao Tower (丽谯楼)
- Seven Star Crags Cliff Inscriptions (七星岩摩崖石刻)
- ancient temples, ancestral halls and historic streets.
Together, these resources provide a broad picture of Zhaoqing’s development from an imperial administrative center to a modern Greater Bay Area city.
Xijiang Water Culture and Agricultural Traditions
The Xijiang River shaped Zhaoqing’s transportation, agriculture, settlement and religious traditions.
Fishing communities preserved boat-related customs, river songs, aquatic food and seasonal rituals. In rural areas, farming communities developed celebrations connected with planting, harvests, ancestral worship and medicinal plants.
Deqing, Fengkai, Guangning, Gaoyao and Huaiji are associated with products such as:
- Deqing Tribute Mandarins (德庆贡柑);
- southern medicinal plants;
- Fengkai Xinghua Chicken (封开杏花鸡);
- Sihui Sugar Tangerines (四会砂糖桔);
- Guangning bamboo products;
- rice, tea, livestock and freshwater aquaculture.
Agricultural study programs can explore geographical indications, food processing, rural cooperatives, e-commerce, agricultural branding and the integration of farming with tourism.
Sihui Jade Culture
Sihui City (四会市) is one of China’s largest jade-processing and trading centers. It is particularly known for jade carving, ornaments, wholesale markets and livestream retail.
The industry includes raw-material trading, design, cutting, carving, polishing, appraisal, wholesale, online marketing and cultural-product development.
A Sihui jade study tour can introduce:
- jade varieties and mineral characteristics;
- carving tools and techniques;
- product design;
- market appraisal;
- livestream commerce;
- intellectual property;
- consumer protection.
Visitors should not assume that every product sold as jade has the same material quality. Purchases should be made through established businesses that provide inspection information and sales documentation.
Transportation and Regional Connections
Zhaoqing has developed a transport system combining high-speed rail, intercity rail, expressways, inland shipping and regional airport connections.
Some major projects mentioned in older tourism materials are still under construction and should not be described as operational.
Operating Railway Services
Nanning–Guangzhou and Guiyang–Guangzhou High-Speed Railways
The Nanning–Guangzhou High-Speed Railway (南广高铁) and Guiyang–Guangzhou High-Speed Railway (贵广高铁) connect Zhaoqing with Guangzhou, Guangxi, Guizhou and the wider national railway network.
These lines support tourism and business travel between the Greater Bay Area and southwestern China.
Guangzhou–Zhanjiang High-Speed Railway
The Guangzhou–Zhanjiang High-Speed Railway (广湛高铁) entered operation in late 2025.
It strengthened Zhaoqing’s connections with Guangzhou, Foshan, Yunfu, Yangjiang, Maoming and Zhanjiang and improved access between the Greater Bay Area and western Guangdong.
Guangzhou–Foshan–Zhaoqing Intercity Railway
The Guangzhou–Foshan–Zhaoqing Intercity Railway (广佛肇城际铁路) provides regional services among Zhaoqing, Foshan and Guangzhou.
Travel times and daily frequencies vary according to the current timetable. Visitors should check the official railway schedule for the selected station and date rather than relying on one fixed journey time.
Railway Projects Under Construction
Zhuhai–Zhaoqing High-Speed Railway
The Zhuhai–Zhaoqing High-Speed Railway (珠肇高铁) remains under construction in 2026.
The line is planned to connect Zhuhai, Jiangmen, Foshan and Zhaoqing and to provide future access to Guangzhou New Airport. Major tunnel and bridge sections continued progressing during 2026, with project plans working toward future operating conditions rather than current passenger service.
Visitors cannot yet use this railway and should rely on existing rail or road services.
Expressways and Road Travel
Zhaoqing is connected with Guangzhou, Foshan, Jiangmen, Yunfu, Qingyuan and Guangxi through an extensive expressway network.
Major road corridors include the Guangzhou–Kunming Expressway (广昆高速), Erguang Expressway (二广高速), Pearl River Delta Ring Expressway (珠三角环线高速) and other regional expressways.
Road travel is especially useful for reaching:
- Dinghu Mountain;
- Deqing;
- Fengkai;
- Guangning;
- Huaiji;
- Xiashuai Ethnic Township;
- rural heritage villages;
- agricultural and industrial study sites.
The distances between Zhaoqing’s counties are substantial. A private vehicle is more efficient than using several local bus transfers for a multi-county itinerary.
Xijiang River Shipping
The Xijiang River is one of southern China’s major inland shipping corridors.
Zhaoqing Port supports freight movement involving building materials, agricultural products, industrial goods and bulk cargo. The waterway links western Guangdong and Guangxi with ports in the Pearl River Delta. Zhaoqing New Port is recognized as an important inland port facility.
Regular passenger water transport is not the principal method for city sightseeing. Scenic cruises or boats may operate within individual attractions, but visitors should not expect a citywide water-bus network.
Air Travel
Zhaoqing currently has no commercial passenger airport.
The principal operating aviation gateway for most domestic and international visitors is Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (广州白云国际机场). Other options may include Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport, Zhuhai Airport and airports in western Guangdong, depending on the itinerary.
Guangzhou New Airport
Guangzhou New Airport (广州新机场), formerly referred to as the Pearl River Delta Hub Airport, began construction in March 2026 in Foshan’s Gaoming District.
It is intended to serve the Foshan–Zhaoqing–Jiangmen–Yunfu region but is not yet open to passengers. Planned road and rail connections should therefore be described as future transport advantages rather than current airport services.
Transportation Within Zhaoqing
Zhaoqing does not operate a conventional urban metro network.
Local travel relies on:
- public buses;
- taxis;
- app-based ride-hailing;
- intercity and county coaches;
- private cars;
- chartered study-tour vehicles.
Walking and cycling are suitable around central Duanzhou, the ancient city, Star Lake (星湖) and selected waterfront routes. Private transportation is strongly recommended for county-level travel and multi-stop educational programs.
Economic Development
Zhaoqing is developing an economy based on manufacturing, agriculture, logistics, trade, tourism and regional services.
In 2025, the city’s GDP reached approximately RMB 297.484 billion, representing year-on-year growth of 3.1%. The primary sector contributed RMB 53.183 billion, the secondary sector RMB 109.412 billion and the tertiary sector RMB 134.888 billion. Their approximate shares were 17.9%, 36.8% and 45.3% respectively.
