Huizhou (惠州) has a varied annual events calendar shaped by Dongpo culture, Hakka traditions, coastal fishing communities, She and Yao ethnic culture, mountain wellness, hot springs, agriculture and outdoor sport.
Its festival activities range from traditional Lunar New Year customs and village dragon-boat races to cultural markets, intangible-heritage performances, tea and agricultural fairs, beach programs, hot-spring campaigns, marathons and events along the 218 Most Beautiful Tourism Road (218最美旅游公路).
Not every activity is a fixed annual festival. Huizhou’s calendar should be understood through four different event types:
- traditional observances, whose lunar dates remain stable but whose public programs change;
- municipal cultural brands, such as the West Lake lantern festival and public heritage events;
- community celebrations, which depend on village customs and local approval;
- commercial scenic-area events, which may operate for only one holiday or season.
Travelers should therefore confirm the current date, venue, registration rules and weather arrangements before building an itinerary around any event.
Huizhou’s Main Festival Systems
Traditional Seasonal Festivals
Spring Festival, the Lantern Festival, Qingming Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival and Double Ninth Festival form the foundation of Huizhou’s traditional calendar.
Public celebrations may incorporate:
- Hakka qilin and lion dances;
- Huizhou folk music and mountain songs;
- Huizhou paper cutting;
- Huidong Fishing Songs (惠东渔歌);
- Huidong Gaizishi Lion Dance (惠东盖仔狮);
- dragon and lantern processions;
- village banquets;
- seasonal markets;
- traditional craft demonstrations.
The scale and location of these programs are announced separately each year. A village custom should not be advertised as a citywide public performance unless the organizer has confirmed visitor access.
Municipal Cultural and Tourism Programs
Huizhou has developed city-level cultural brands combining festivals with tourism, consumption and public performances.
The city’s cultural-tourism strategy supports West Lake night programs, Dongpo-themed experiences, heritage markets, village performances, the Huizhou Marathon and outdoor events around Nankun Mountain (南昆山), Luofu Mountain (罗浮山) and the 218 tourism road. Exact programs are selected and announced annually.
Rural, Coastal and Scenic-Area Events
Individual towns, villages and attractions may introduce:
- agricultural harvest fairs;
- seafood and oyster festivals;
- rural music evenings;
- coastal sports;
- paddleboarding and surfing activities;
- hot-spring food festivals;
- children’s water programs;
- flower displays;
- night markets;
- firework or drone shows.
These are normally temporary tourism campaigns rather than permanent traditional festivals. Resort facilities, performances and fireworks remain subject to weather, operating conditions and government approval.
Sports and Outdoor Festivals
Huizhou increasingly integrates sport with tourism through marathons, cycling, hiking, trail running, water sports and self-driving events.
The 218 tourism road opened as a major route connecting Nankun Mountain and Luofu Mountain and has been used to support driving, cycling, photography and rural-tourism programs. The road links several towns and a large number of natural and cultural resources, but individual events require separate annual confirmation.
Festival Characteristics by Area
Huicheng District: West Lake, Dongpo Culture and Citywide Events
Huicheng District (惠城区) hosts many of Huizhou’s largest public celebrations.
The principal venues include:
- Huizhou West Lake (惠州西湖);
- Dongjiang riverfront areas;
- Shuidong Street (水东街);
- Zhuwu Lane (祝屋巷);
- Huizhou Civic Square;
- city cultural and sports venues.
Major themes include the West Lake New Year Lantern Festival, Lantern Festival heritage parades, Dongpo cultural programs, public concerts, night markets, city runs and cultural exhibitions.
Huicheng provides the best public transport, hotels and evening dining for visitors attending a major city event.
Huiyang District: Hakka Folk Culture and Guitar Arts
Huiyang District (惠阳区) is associated with Hakka settlement, traditional architecture and folk arts.
Festival programs may feature:
- Hakka Qilin Dance (客家麒麟舞);
- Hakka Coolie Hat craftsmanship (客家凉帽制作技艺);
- traditional music;
- rural markets;
- guitar concerts and art exchanges;
- outdoor music programs;
- Mid-Autumn cultural evenings.
During the 2026 May Day holiday, Huiyang announced dozens of cultural, tourism, sports and heritage activities, but the specific concerts, fireworks and market venues were holiday programs rather than guaranteed annual events.
Huidong County: Coastal Culture, Fishing Traditions and She Heritage
Huidong County (惠东县) combines coastline, fishing communities, mountain villages and ethnic heritage.
Representative cultural resources include:
- Huidong Fishing Songs;
- Gaizishi Lion Dance;
- Zengguang Dragon Dance (增光舞龙);
- coastal food and fishing customs;
- village dragon-boat activities;
- Jiaofeng She Village (角峰畲族村);
- red-cultural programs around Gaotan (高潭).
A Huidong Intangible Heritage Week held in 2024 combined heritage displays, local food, agricultural products, traditional-costume photography and camping music programs. This demonstrates the county’s event potential, but future dates and activities must be confirmed annually.
Boluo County: Luofu Mountain, Rural Harvests and Outdoor Events
Boluo County (博罗县) is best known for Luofu Mountain, Dongjiang revolutionary culture, villages and agricultural landscapes.
Events may combine:
- Daoist health culture;
- traditional Chinese medicine;
- mountain walking;
- patriotic concerts;
- rural harvest displays;
- cycling and self-driving;
- farm markets;
- heritage and red-culture study programs.
Programs associated with the 218 tourism road have strengthened the connection between Luofu Mountain, rural communities and Longmen’s mountain resorts.
Longmen County: Hot Springs, Rural Culture and Yao Heritage
Longmen County (龙门县) specializes in hot-spring wellness, Nankun Mountain ecology, village tourism and rural cultural programs.
Official development plans have promoted the Longmen Thirteen Springs (龙门十三汤) brand, hot-spring festivals, seasonal bathing programs, village performances, cycling and rural cultural routes. Individual resort dinners, water festivals, fireworks and children’s activities remain commercial programs that may change without notice.
Longmen is also home to Lantian Yao Ethnic Township (蓝田瑶族乡), an important center of local Yao culture. It should be included alongside Huidong’s She community when describing Huizhou’s ethnic-cultural landscape.
Spring Festivals: February to May
West Lake New Year Lantern Festival
The Huizhou West Lake New Year Lantern Festival (惠州西湖新春灯会) is one of the city’s strongest recurring cultural brands.
In 2026, the festival operated from February 14 to March 3 and placed 36 lantern installations around the West Lake area. The program combined Dongpo culture, traditional lantern craftsmanship, Song-dynasty aesthetics and modern lighting. Entry to the core area used a real-name reservation system during the busiest evening periods.
The dates, lighting hours, entrance routes and reservation rules change each year. Visitors should not use an earlier year’s schedule for a future trip.
Intangible-Heritage Lantern Festival Parade
Huizhou has also developed a large public Lantern Festival Intangible-Heritage Parade (非遗闹元宵大巡游).
The 2026 parade was held on March 1 along the Dongjiang riverfront. It brought together 44 participating groups, nearly 1,300 performers and around 40 Huizhou heritage or folk projects, together with invited traditions from other Guangdong cities.
Although the parade has become a major city event, its route, date, audience-control measures and participating teams must be reconfirmed each year.
She March Third Cultural Activities
The third day of the third lunar month is an important festival period for several She communities in southern China.
A public She March Third Cultural Festival (畲族三月三文化节) was documented at Jiaofeng She Village in Huidong in 2024. Activities included ethnic clothing, bamboo dancing, food, music and cultural interaction. It was described as the village’s first edition, so it should not yet be presented as an uninterrupted annual festival with a guaranteed program.
When an official edition is announced, possible experiences may include:
- ethnic songs and dances;
- traditional dress;
- bamboo dancing;
- craft displays;
- communal food;
- black glutinous rice;
- agricultural products;
- village cultural interpretation.
Ancestral rituals, processions, meals and evening programs depend on community decisions. Independent visitors should not assume that every activity is free or open without registration.
May Day Cultural and Tourism Programs
The May Day holiday is one of Huizhou’s largest periods for markets, concerts, exhibitions, heritage activities and scenic-area promotions.
In 2026, the Guangdong May Day Cultural Tourism Consumption Promotion Program was launched in Longmen’s Changtan Art Village (长滩艺术村). The campaign included rural tourism, cultural experiences, sport, agricultural products and consumer benefits, illustrating how Huizhou links holiday travel with rural revitalization.
Individual counties and attractions publish their own May Day programs. Discounts, fireworks and performances should be treated as current-year offers only.
China Tourism Day
Activities around China Tourism Day on May 19 may include public performances, cultural markets, scenic-area offers and Dongpo-themed programs.
The exact venues and benefits vary by year. Free admission, consumer vouchers or cultural meals should not be promised until the official announcement has been released.
Spring Clothing and Travel Advice
Spring is warm but humid, with frequent rain from April onward.
Wear:
- a light long-sleeved top;
- breathable trousers;
- a removable windproof jacket;
- comfortable non-slip shoes.
Carry a compact raincoat, insect repellent and protection for cameras or electronic equipment.
For She-village or mountain activities, choose flat shoes suitable for uneven rural paths. Traditional clothing rentals should be booked through clearly priced operators.
Two-Day Spring Festival Route
Day 1: Attend an officially announced She cultural program at Jiaofeng Village or explore Huidong’s mountain heritage and rural market. Stay in Huidong.
Day 2: Continue to Xunliao Bay (巽寮湾) or Twin Moon Bay (双月湾), then return to Huicheng for West Lake, Shuidong Street or an evening cultural activity.
The She festival and the West Lake lantern festival do not normally occur at the same point in the calendar, so this route must be adjusted to the selected event date.
Summer Festivals: June to August
Dragon Boat Festival
The Dragon Boat Festival is observed around the fifth day of the fifth lunar month.
Huizhou’s dragon-boat traditions are generally organized by towns, villages and waterfront communities rather than through one permanent city-center race. Possible locations may include riverside and coastal settlements in Huidong, Boluo, Huiyang and other districts.
Race sites, start times, road controls and weather cancellations are announced locally. Visitors should not travel to a village based solely on a previous year’s race list.
Cultural and Natural Heritage Day
Huizhou organizes heritage exhibitions, performances, workshops and public-education programs around Cultural and Natural Heritage Day in June.
The city reported a series of heritage activities in 2026, while its major Lantern Festival parade had already demonstrated the breadth of local heritage, including fishing songs, folk dance, paper cutting, martial arts and traditional crafts.
Museum workshops and inheritor demonstrations may require registration and have limited capacity.
Coastal and Water-Sport Programs
Summer attractions may organize:
- beach music;
- paddleboarding;
- surfing;
- coastal races;
- children’s water activities;
- foam parties;
- night markets;
- camping programs.
These activities are most common around Huidong’s coastline, Daya Bay (大亚湾) and Longmen’s resort areas. They are highly dependent on weather and operator schedules.
Longmen Summer Resort Programs
Hot-spring and mountain resorts may add water parks, family games, rural food, craft activities and evening entertainment during school holidays.
Do not assume that every hot-spring hotel offers fireworks or a water park. Confirm which facilities are included in the room or entrance package.
Summer Clothing and Safety
Wear:
- quick-drying summer clothes;
- a lightweight sun-protective layer;
- non-slip water shoes;
- a hat and sunglasses.
Carry high-protection sunscreen, insect repellent, drinking water, rain protection and a complete change of clothes.
June to September is the main typhoon and severe-weather period. Coastal sport, boat trips, dragon-boat races and outdoor performances may be cancelled during strong wind, lightning or heavy rain.
Two-Day Coastal Festival Route
Day 1: Attend a confirmed village dragon-boat race or coastal cultural activity in Huidong. Continue to a nearby beach for an evening market or seafood dinner.
Day 2: Explore Xunliao Bay, Twin Moon Bay or a confirmed coastal sports program.
Longmen is better planned as a separate two-day mountain-and-hot-spring route rather than combined with Huidong in a rushed weekend.
Autumn Festivals: September to November
Mid-Autumn and National Day Programs
Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day form Huizhou’s principal autumn travel period.
Activities may include:
- cultural performances;
- Hakka qilin dances;
- patriotic concerts;
- traditional-costume garden programs;
- village markets;
- lantern displays;
- rural food fairs;
- scenic-area night programs.
The participating venues and performance schedules change annually. Fireworks are not a guaranteed part of the holiday.
Harvest and Agricultural Events
Rural attractions may organize rice harvesting, sun-drying displays, fruit picking, farm experiences and agricultural markets.
These activities are tied to the harvest cycle and venue operations. The color of rice fields and the availability of farm workshops cannot be guaranteed for an entire two-month period.
Music and Guitar Programs
Huizhou and Huiyang occasionally host guitar arts, youth music, rural concerts and creative markets.
The municipal cultural-tourism work plan supports major public arts and Greater Bay Area guitar events, but their dates and venues are project-based.
Huizhou Marathon and Outdoor Events
The Huizhou Marathon (惠州马拉松) is promoted as one of the city’s major sports brands. Other programs may include long-distance walking, cycling, trail running, photography and self-driving activities.
Registration, medical requirements, road closures and entry quotas should be checked through the event organizer.
218 Tourism Road Activities
The 218 tourism road connects mountain, hot-spring, rural and cultural resources around Longmen and Boluo.
It provides a strong setting for:
- self-driving;
- cycling;
- rural markets;
- photography;
- hiking;
- village stays;
- hot-spring holidays.
“Thousands of cars” campaigns, rallies and organized rides are annual promotional projects only when officially announced. The public road itself should not be treated as a permanent festival venue.
Autumn Clothing and Travel Advice
September remains warm, while October and November are usually drier and more comfortable.
Wear light clothing during the day and carry a thin jacket for mornings, evenings and mountain areas.
For marathons, cycling or hiking, use appropriate footwear and equipment. Do not enter a race route without registration.
Three-Day Autumn Culture and Outdoor Route
Day 1: Explore Huizhou West Lake, Dongpo cultural sites, Shuidong Street and a confirmed Mid-Autumn or National Day program.
Day 2: Continue to Luofu Mountain or a Boluo rural event, staying near the mountain or along the 218 route.
Day 3: Drive toward Longmen for rural scenery, Nankun Mountain or a hot-spring stay.
This route combines city culture, outdoor travel and wellness without crossing repeatedly between the eastern coast and northwestern mountains.
Winter Festivals: December to February
Warm-Winter Tourism
Huizhou promotes winter travel through three major experiences:
- Longmen hot springs;
- Luofu Mountain and Nankun Mountain wellness;
- mild coastal and city holidays.
Resorts may introduce health-themed meals, seasonal bathing, New Year markets, children’s activities and cultural performances.
New Year and Spring Festival Preparations
Before Lunar New Year, Huizhou may organize:
- flower markets;
- New Year goods fairs;
- village performances;
- public concerts;
- calligraphy activities;
- rural evening shows;
- West Lake lantern preparations.
The city identified the West Lake lantern festival and intangible-heritage Lantern Festival activities as important parts of its 2026 Spring Festival consumption and cultural program.
Fireworks and Countdown Events
Fireworks, drone shows and countdown parties depend on venue permits, fire controls and weather.
Travel websites should not advertise a “citywide annual fireworks show” unless the current organizer has published the venue, date and entry arrangements.
Winter Clothing and Travel Advice
Central Huizhou and the coast usually have mild winters, but mountain resorts can feel cold and damp.
Bring:
- a long-sleeved base layer;
- sweater or fleece;
- wind-resistant jacket;
- long trousers;
- non-slip shoes.
For hot springs, pack a swimsuit, dry clothing and a waterproof bag. Avoid remaining outdoors in wet swimwear during cold evenings.
Two-Day Winter Festival Route
Day 1: Drive along part of the 218 tourism road and visit a rural village, cultural market or Nankun Mountain attraction. Stay at a licensed hot-spring hotel.
Day 2: Enjoy a hot-spring morning before continuing to Luofu Mountain or returning to Huicheng for a New Year market or West Lake evening program.
Ethnic-Minority Festivals and Cultural Visits
Jiaofeng She Village
Jiaofeng She Village is located in the Jiulong Peak Tourism Area (九龙峰旅游区) of Huidong.
A cultural-tourism development project for the village was formally promoted in 2024, and the village has hosted public She cultural activities.
A visitor program may involve ethnic clothing, singing, bamboo dancing, food, crafts or agricultural products, but these experiences require local organization.
Photography of residents, ceremonies and private homes should always be based on consent.
Lantian Yao Ethnic Township
Lantian Yao Ethnic Township in Longmen is another important minority-cultural area within Huizhou.
The area combines tea gardens, bamboo forests, rural settlements and Yao cultural elements. Official plans support the protection and development of its ethnic heritage, while improved rural roads are making the area more accessible.
A large fixed annual tourist festival has not been verified. Village performances, communal meals and craft activities should therefore be arranged through the township or community.
Ethnic-Cultural Etiquette
Visitors should:
- request permission before photographing residents;
- remain quiet near ancestral or religious spaces;
- avoid touching ritual objects;
- follow community instructions;
- use clearly priced costume-rental services;
- enter private houses only when invited.
Rice wine or welcoming drinks are optional. Visitors may decline politely for health, religious, age-related or personal reasons.
