  • Guangzhou Festivals And Activities

Guangzhou (广州) has one of the richest festival calendars in southern China. Traditional flower markets, temple fairs, dragon-boat gatherings, village processions and ancestral customs coexist with international exhibitions, urban light shows, garden events, music programs and large commercial fairs.

Festival experiences vary considerably across Guangzhou’s eleven administrative districts. Yuexiu District (越秀区) and Liwan District (荔湾区) preserve the strongest old-city New Year atmosphere; Huangpu District (黄埔区) is associated with Maritime Silk Road heritage and the Boluo Dan Temple Fair; Panyu District (番禺区) is known for village pageants and dragon boats; Nansha District (南沙区) focuses on maritime culture and Mazu traditions; and Zengcheng District (增城区) contains Guangzhou’s only officially recognized ethnic-minority-concentrated village.

Modern festivals are concentrated around Tianhe District (天河区), Haizhu District (海珠区) and Pazhou (琶洲), where visitors can attend the Canton Fair, major technology exhibitions, the Guangzhou International Automobile Exhibition and changing citywide cultural programs.

    Important Planning Notes

Guangzhou’s events fall into three scheduling categories:

Traditional lunar festivals such as Boluo Dan, Mazu’s Birthday, the Shawan Piaose tradition and the Mid-Autumn Fire Dragon custom are associated with recurring lunar dates.

Annual government and tourism programs, including flower markets, lantern festivals and dragon-boat races, are redesigned each year. Their venues, routes and public-access rules may change.

Edition-based exhibitions and commercial festivals, including the Guangzhou International Light Festival, garden expos, auto shows and specialist exhibitions, should never be assigned permanent dates without checking the corresponding year’s official announcement.

Several details commonly repeated in tourism materials require correction. Zheng Xian’s Birthday (郑仙诞) is traditionally observed on the 25th day of the seventh lunar month, rather than the 24th. The Panhu King Cultural Festival (盘瓠王文化节) in Zhengguo She Village is associated with the 14th day of the seventh lunar month, rather than late in the eighth lunar month.

    Festival Characteristics by District

Yuexiu District: The Center of Cantonese New Year Culture

Yuexiu is Guangzhou’s principal destination for Spring Festival flower markets, the Guangfu Temple Fair, New Year lanterns, Cantonese opera and intangible cultural heritage markets.

The traditional itinerary runs through Xihu Road Flower Market (西湖路花市), Beijing Road Pedestrian Street (北京路步行街), Guangzhou City God Temple (广州城隍庙), Yuexiu Park (越秀公园) and the historic central axis.

In 2026, the Xihu Spring Festival Flower Market operated from February 13 until the early hours of February 17. The 2026 Guangzhou New Year Lantern Festival connected Yuexiu Park and Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall (中山纪念堂) from January 30 to March 8. These dates illustrate the scale of the New Year season but should not be reused for later years.

Liwan District: Water Markets and Xiguan Traditions

Liwan combines Xiguan architecture, flower boats, Cantonese opera, temple customs and traditional food.

The Guangzhou Water Flower Market (广州水上花市) uses the waterways and public spaces around Liwan Lake Park (荔湾湖公园), Lychee Bay (荔枝湾涌), Yongqing Fang (永庆坊) and the Cantonese Opera Art Museum (粤剧艺术博物馆).

The 2026 Water Flower Market ran from February 12 to 14 and combined flower boats, waterside markets, folk performances and Xiguan cultural programs.

Other Liwan traditions include temple celebrations, Cantonese opera, dragon-boat gatherings and seasonal activities around Renwei Temple (仁威庙) and Wong Tai Sin Temple (黄大仙祠). Public temple-fair programs vary each year.

Haizhu District: Dragon Boats and International Exhibitions

Haizhu combines traditional waterside culture with Guangzhou’s largest exhibition area.

The district contains the China Import and Export Fair Complex (中国进出口商品交易会展馆) in Pazhou, the main venue for the Canton Fair and many professional exhibitions.

Traditional events take place along waterways such as the Pearl River and Huangpu Creek (黄埔涌). Haizhu also hosts the Guangzhou International Dragon Boat Invitational Race, waterfront flower markets and selected city-lighting programs.

The 2026 Guangzhou International Dragon Boat Invitational Race was held on June 20, with teams from Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Macao and overseas regions competing on the Pearl River.

Tianhe District: Modern City Events and Light Installations

Tianhe is the center of Guangzhou’s modern skyline and large urban cultural events. Key locations include Huacheng Square (花城广场), Haixinsha Asian Games Park (海心沙亚运公园), Guangzhou Opera House (广州大剧院) and the area surrounding Canton Tower (广州塔).

The Guangzhou International Light Festival is commonly staged along Guangzhou’s new central axis, but its dates and exhibition zones change by edition. The 2025 event ran from November 16 to 26 and used Huacheng Square, Haixinsha, the Pearl River waterfront and selected Huangpu locations. Future editions must be checked independently.

Baiyun District: Mountain Worship and the Mid-Autumn Fire Dragon

Baiyun District is known for Zheng Xian’s Birthday, mountain worship, flower-themed events and the Mid-Autumn Fire Dragon custom.

Zheng Xian’s Birthday is associated with Baiyun Mountain (白云山) and the 25th day of the seventh lunar month. Activities traditionally include mountain climbing, worship and cultural programs connected with medicinal plants and the legend of Zheng Anqi (郑安期).

During the Mid-Autumn Festival, villages in Jianggao Town (江高镇), Junhe Subdistrict (均禾街) and Baiyunhu Subdistrict (白云湖街) preserve the custom of constructing a dragon from bamboo, vines and plant material before covering it with burning incense and carrying it through the community. The Fire Dragon custom is listed as a provincial intangible cultural heritage project.

Huangpu District: Maritime Silk Road and Boluo Dan

Huangpu’s signature event is the Boluo Dan Temple Fair (波罗诞庙会) at the South Sea God Temple (南海神庙).

The festival takes place from the 11th through the 13th day of the second lunar month and commemorates the South Sea God. Its heritage is closely connected with Guangzhou’s ancient maritime trade and the Maritime Silk Road.

Festival activities may include the Five Sons Paying Homage to the King ritual (五子朝王), deity processions, dragon and lion dances, traditional opera, crafts, food markets and Maritime Silk Road exhibitions.

Panyu District: Piaose Pageants and Village Dragon Boats

Panyu preserves some of Guangzhou’s strongest village-based processional traditions.

The Shawan Piaose Parade (沙湾飘色巡游) is associated with the third day of the third lunar month and the Beidi celebration in Shawan Ancient Town (沙湾古镇). Children dressed as figures from legends and opera appear to float above decorated platforms supported by concealed metal structures.

The public parade may be scheduled on a nearby weekend rather than the exact lunar date. In 2026, the Shawan Piaose Parade was held on April 19 and presented 17 decorated platforms from local villages and cultural organizations.

Panyu is also known for traditional dragon boats, Shawan music, fish lanterns and the village alliance celebration commonly called the Ten-Village Gathering (十乡会). Public routes and dates should be confirmed annually.

Nansha District: Mazu Culture and Coastal Lanterns

Nansha’s festival identity is based on maritime worship, fishing-community traditions, coastal scenery and Greater Bay Area cultural exchange.

The most important traditional event is the Nansha Mazu Cultural Tourism Festival (南沙妈祖文化旅游节) at Nansha Tin Hau Palace (南沙天后宫). Mazu’s Birthday falls on the 23rd day of the third lunar month. Programs may include ceremonial worship, processions, Cantonese opera, traditional costume presentations and maritime cultural activities. Nansha Mazu belief was added to Guangdong’s provincial intangible cultural heritage list in 2013.

The Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area Lantern Festival (粤港澳大湾区灯会) is a modern, edition-based event rather than a permanently scheduled annual custom. The 2026 edition took place at Nansha Tin Hau Palace and Binhai Park (滨海公园) from February 10 to May 10.

Huadu District: Pangu Worship and Lantern Heritage

Huadu’s best-known traditional celebration is the Pangu King Birthday Festival (盘古王诞) at Pangu King Park (盘古王公园) in Shiling Town (狮岭镇).

The festival is traditionally observed on the 12th day of the eighth lunar month and combines worship, Cantonese opera, lanterns, lion dancing and community activities. It reflects the historical interaction of Han Pangu beliefs and Yao Panhu traditions in Lingnan.

The Huadu Lantern Festival (花都元宵灯会) is included in Guangzhou’s municipal intangible cultural heritage list, although the scale and operating status of the public event can vary.

Conghua District: Plum Blossoms and Rural Fire Customs

Conghua combines mountain scenery, hot springs and rural New Year traditions.

The Liuxi Plum Blossom Festival (流溪梅花节) is held according to the winter flowering period at Liuxihe National Forest Park (流溪河国家森林公园). The 2025 edition opened during the best flowering period in early January and featured more than 100,000 plum trees, photography, poetry, study activities and local products. Flowering dates vary with temperature and rainfall.

The Caomun Throwing Custom (掷彩门) is practiced around the Lantern Festival in several Conghua villages. Participants throw lighted firecrackers toward a decorated bamboo structure as a symbolic attempt to win good fortune. The custom is listed as provincial intangible cultural heritage and requires strict fire-safety control.

Conghua’s hot-spring hotels also organize winter dining, wellness and holiday programs, but these are commercial packages rather than fixed public festivals.

Zengcheng District: She Heritage and Hakka Traditions

Zengcheng contains Zhengguo She Village (正果畲族村), officially described as Guangzhou’s only ethnic-minority-concentrated village. Its ancestors settled in the area several centuries ago, and the village maintains She songs, clothing, food, ancestral traditions and handicrafts.

The district also preserves Hakka customs, Pixiu Dance (舞貔貅), traditional food, lychee culture and rural celebrations.

    She Ethnic Festivals in Guangzhou

    She March Third

The She March Third Festival (畲族三月三) falls on the third day of the third lunar month.

Black Rice (乌饭) is the festival’s most recognizable food. The rice is colored and scented using leaves before being steamed. Guangzhou has recognized She Black Rice preparation as municipal intangible cultural heritage.

Public programs in Zhengguo She Village may include:

    She folk songs and dancing;

    bamboo-pole dancing;

    traditional clothing;

    colored-ribbon weaving;

    Black Rice preparation;

    rural food and cultural markets.

The exact public program is not guaranteed every year. Travelers should verify whether a village celebration, tourism event or closed community observance is planned.

    Panhu King Cultural Festival

The Panhu King Cultural Festival honors the ancestral figure associated with She origin traditions.

Official Guangzhou material states that Zhengguo She Village organizes its Panhu King cultural celebration around the 14th day of the seventh lunar month. Activities may include ancestral images, village worship, songs, dances and community cultural programs.

This festival should not be confused with Huadu’s Pangu King Birthday on the 12th day of the eighth lunar month. Although the names sound similar in English, they belong to different cultural traditions and occur in different districts.

    Ancestral Painting Worship

The She Ancestral Painting Worship tradition (畲族拜祖公图) is a provincial intangible cultural heritage project.

Some worship takes place within family or clan settings and may not be open to casual visitors. A public demonstration at a museum or cultural event is more suitable for tour groups than attempting to enter a private New Year ceremony.

    Spring Festivals and Events

    Guangzhou Spring Festival Flower Markets

Walking through flower markets before the Lunar New Year is one of Guangzhou’s defining customs.

In 2026, all eleven districts organized traditional flower markets. The main markets operated for different periods between February 10 and the early hours of February 17, while longer supporting flower events were also held in parks and commercial districts.

    The best-known flower-market experiences include:

    Xihu Road Flower Market in Yuexiu;

    Liwan Road Flower Market and the Water Flower Market;

    the Pearl River waterfront market in Haizhu;

    Tianhe Sports Center Flower Market;

and district markets in Panyu, Baiyun, Huangpu, Huadu, Nansha, Conghua and Zengcheng.

    Guangfu Temple Fair

The Guangfu Temple Fair (广府庙会) begins around the Lantern Festival and uses Beijing Road and the old-city cultural area as its principal setting.

The 2026 temple fair ran from March 3 to 9 and included Beijing Road, Zhongyou Square (忠佑广场), Zhongshan Fourth Road (中山四路), Huifu East Road (惠福东路), Xihu Road and supporting venues across Yuexiu.

Programs typically combine Cantonese opera, intangible heritage, folk parades, food, crafts and contemporary performances.

    Boluo Dan Temple Fair

Boluo Dan is held on the 11th to 13th days of the second lunar month at the South Sea God Temple.

The main worship and procession occur on the 13th day. Travelers should arrive in the morning and use public transportation because surrounding roads and parking areas become extremely crowded.

    Shawan Piaose Parade

The Shawan Piaose tradition is connected with the third day of the third lunar month, although public parades may be moved to a convenient weekend.

The route normally passes through Shawan Ancient Town, where visitors can also see Lingnan ancestral halls, Shawan music and traditional food.

    Nansha Mazu Festival

Mazu’s Birthday occurs on the 23rd day of the third lunar month.

Nansha Tin Hau Palace is the principal destination for ceremonial programs and Greater Bay Area Mazu cultural exchange.

    Spring Canton Fair

The 139th Canton Fair (第139届广交会) was held at the Canton Fair Complex in three phases:

    Phase 2026 Dates
    Phase 1 April 15–19
    Phase 2 April 23–27
    Phase 3 May 1–5

The fair focuses on different product categories during each phase. It is a professional trade event, and overseas buyers, exhibitors and business visitors must complete the appropriate registration procedures.

    Summer Festivals and Events

    Dragon Boat Festival

The fifth day of the fifth lunar month is one of the liveliest traditional periods in Guangzhou’s riverside villages.

Activities may include dragon-boat racing, boat visits between villages, dragon-boat meals, ceremonial eye-dotting and local markets.

Visitors can find strong dragon-boat traditions in Panyu, Liwan, Haizhu, Huangpu, Baiyun, Nansha and several historic village communities.

Guangzhou International Dragon Boat Invitational Race

The international invitational race is a large city-level sporting event held around the Dragon Boat Festival period.

In 2026, it took place on June 20 and included 105 teams and several competitive and performance categories.

    Guangzhou Dragon Boat Super League

The Guangzhou Dragon Boat Super League was launched as a new citywide competition format in 2026.

The points-series stage was planned from July through October, followed by a final in November. Initial competition areas included Luhu Lake (麓湖), Huangpu Creek, Baiyun Lake (白云湖) and Changzhou Island (长洲岛).

The series combines sport with lion dancing, folk songs, food, cultural markets and dragon-boat rituals.

    Zheng Xian’s Birthday

Zheng Xian’s Birthday falls on the 25th day of the seventh lunar month.

Visitors can combine the event with Baiyun Mountain, Yuntai Garden (云台花园) and other northern Guangzhou attractions. Public rites and market programs should be confirmed annually.

    Theme-Park and Resort Programs

Chimelong Tourist Resort (长隆旅游度假区), Sunac Resort (融创文旅城), forest parks and water attractions introduce changing summer programs.

These may include water activities, extended opening hours, music, night performances or family events. They are commercial seasonal products rather than traditional festivals.

    Autumn Festivals and Events

    Mid-Autumn Fire Dragon

The Fire Dragon tradition is performed in several Baiyun villages around the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Because the dragon is covered with burning incense, visitors must stay behind barriers, avoid touching the structure and follow local fire-control instructions.

    Panhu King Cultural Festival

Zhengguo She Village traditionally holds its Panhu King cultural activity on the 14th day of the seventh lunar month, which may fall in late summer or early autumn depending on the year.

The event is best combined with Zhengguo Old Street (正果老街), the She Folk Museum (畲族民俗馆) and a rural overnight stay.

    Pangu King Birthday

Huadu’s Pangu King Birthday takes place on the 12th day of the eighth lunar month.

The festival may continue over several days with worship, opera, lanterns and folk performances.

    Autumn Canton Fair

The 140th Canton Fair (第140届广交会) is scheduled in three phases:

    Phase 2026 Dates
    Phase 1 October 15–19
    Phase 2 October 23–27
    Phase 3 October 31–November 4

Business travelers should book hotels near Pazhou, Zhujiang New Town (珠江新城) or an appropriate metro line well in advance.

    Guangzhou International Light Festival

The Light Festival normally uses the central axis and Pearl River skyline, but exact dates are announced edition by edition.

The 2025 event ran for eleven days from November 16 to 26. Some central installations required reservations through the official city-service platform.

Travelers planning a later edition should confirm the dates, reservation system, entrance bridge and daily session before booking.

    Guangzhou Garden Expo

The Guangzhou Garden Expo is an edition-based landscape and horticultural exhibition whose venue and timing can change.

The 32nd edition opened on October 30, 2025 and was coordinated with the National Games and the Guangzhou International Light Festival. It should not be described as a permanently fixed spring event at one venue.

    Winter Festivals and Events

    Liuxi Plum Blossom Festival

The plum-blossom season usually begins in late December or January, depending on temperature.

Visitors should check the park’s current flowering report rather than selecting dates only from previous editions. The best period may last for only several weeks.

    Hot-Spring and Wellness Programs

Conghua’s hot-spring district and selected rural resorts organize winter wellness packages, local food, orchard activities and New Year programs.

These experiences suit couples, families and older travelers, but they should be booked as hotel or resort products rather than treated as city-organized festivals.

    Guangzhou International Automobile Exhibition

The Guangzhou International Automobile Exhibition is normally held at the Canton Fair Complex in late autumn or early winter.

The event is an edition-based industry exhibition. Ticket periods, professional days and public days should be checked through the official exhibition organizer before booking.

New Year and Spring Festival Preparations

From late December onward, Guangzhou introduces countdown concerts, shopping-center programs, winter flower displays and preparations for the next Spring Festival flower markets.

The citywide program changes substantially each year. For example, Guangzhou organized more than 500 cultural and tourism activities for the 2026 New Year holiday.

Avoid scheduling distant Conghua, Zengcheng or Nansha excursions on exhibition days.

    Mid-Autumn Folk Culture Tour

Baiyun Fire Dragon – Huadu Pangu Culture – Guangzhou Culture Park Lanterns

The route requires confirmation because village fire-dragon times and public viewing arrangements are announced locally.

    Accommodation for Festival Travelers

    Yuexiu and Liwan

These districts are best for the Guangfu Temple Fair, flower markets, old-city lanterns, Cantonese opera and traditional food.

Metro access is excellent, but taxis may face diversions during parades and pedestrian controls.

    Haizhu and Pazhou

Stay near Pazhou for the Canton Fair and professional exhibitions.

Hotel demand and rates rise sharply during large fairs, so reservations should be made as soon as attendance is confirmed.

    Tianhe and Zhujiang New Town

This is the most convenient area for urban light shows, the central business district and evening Pearl River sightseeing.

It also provides easy metro access to Pazhou.

    Panyu

Panyu is suitable for Shawan Piaose, village culture, dragon boats and Chimelong.

Travelers attending an early-morning village event may prefer an overnight stay rather than commuting from central Guangzhou.

    Zengcheng and Conghua

These northern and eastern districts are best explored by private vehicle or organized tour.

Rural guesthouses are suitable for cultural immersion but may offer fewer English-language services than central hotels.

    Nansha

Stay in Nansha for the Mazu festival, coastal lantern events and port-related travel.

The district is far from central Guangzhou, so it should be treated as a separate day or overnight destination.

    Festival Transportation

Guangzhou’s metro is the most efficient method for events in Yuexiu, Liwan, Haizhu, Tianhe, Huangpu, Panyu and parts of Nansha.

Old-city flower markets, Guangfu Temple Fair routes and major light festivals may introduce exit controls, one-way pedestrian systems or advance reservations.

Private vehicles are more practical for Zhengguo She Village, Conghua villages and some rural parts of Huadu and Panyu. Parking close to a procession is rarely possible.

For the Canton Fair, use Metro Line 8 and follow the entrance information printed on the registration or exhibition materials.

    Festival Etiquette

Temple fairs, Mazu worship, She ancestral traditions and village processions are living cultural practices.

Do not touch deity statues, incense, ancestral paintings, ritual objects or parade equipment. Avoid walking between worshippers and an altar.

Ask permission before taking close portraits of villagers, children, ritual specialists or people wearing ethnic clothing.

Piaose platforms carry young performers and must not be approached, shaken or obstructed.

Fire Dragon and Caomun activities involve burning incense or fireworks. Stay behind official barriers and do not attempt to collect burning material as a souvenir.

    Weather and Clothing

Spring in Guangzhou is humid and rainy. Carry a compact umbrella and wear shoes with non-slip soles for old streets and village roads.

Summer dragon-boat events are hot, humid and exposed to strong sunshine. Bring water, sunscreen and breathable clothing.

Autumn is normally the most comfortable season for outdoor festivals, but typhoons and heavy rain can still affect early-autumn coastal activities.

Winter is mild in central Guangzhou, although Conghua, Zengcheng and mountain areas can be noticeably cooler in the morning and evening.
