Pingliang (平凉市) lies in eastern Gansu at the meeting point of Gansu, Shaanxi and Ningxia. For travellers, its strongest appeal is the combination of Kongtong Mountain (崆峒山), Daoist culture, Buddhist grottoes, ancient temples, forested mountains, Loess Plateau landscapes and the quieter atmosphere of a smaller northwestern Chinese city.
The centerpiece is Kongtong Mountain, a National 5A Tourist Attraction about 12 kilometres from central Pingliang. The mountain rises from about 1,456 metres to 2,123.5 metres and preserves a remarkable concentration of Daoist and Buddhist buildings among forests and Danxia cliffs. Historical tradition associates it with the story of the Yellow Emperor seeking the Dao from Guangchengzi, which is why Kongtong has long been promoted as one of China’s most important Daoist mountains.
Pingliang is especially suitable for slow travel rather than rushed sightseeing. Two or three days are sufficient for Kongtong District, but four to six days are better if you want to continue to Jingchuan, Chongxin, Huating, Zhuanglang or Jingning.

Three-Day Classic Pingliang Tour
Day 1: Arrive in Pingliang and Explore the City
Base yourself in Kongtong District, which has the widest choice of hotels, restaurants and transport. Spend the afternoon at Pingliang Museum (平凉市博物馆) if your arrival time allows. The museum is a national first-grade museum and occupies a modern complex in Longyin Temple Park, with collections covering prehistoric cultures, Shang–Zhou bronzes, Qijia jade, Buddhist and Daoist objects, ceramics and regional folk arts.
If you prefer a lighter first afternoon, walk through Liuhu Park (柳湖公园), one of the city’s traditional leisure areas, before exploring local restaurants and neighbourhoods in the evening.
Avoid packing too many attractions into arrival day. Kongtong Mountain deserves a full day and is considerably more enjoyable after a good night’s rest.
Day 2: Full Day on Kongtong Mountain
Start early and go to the Kongtong Ancient Town Visitor Centre (崆峒古镇游客中心), the principal transport and ticketing hub for the scenic area.
During the 2026 peak season, from April through October, the scenic area opens ticketing from early morning and requires visitors to enter before the late-afternoon cutoff. Official notices recommend real-name advance reservations during busy periods. Scenic buses operate from the ancient town to Zhongtai (中台) and Xiangshan (香山), with additional transport on the front-mountain route.
For travellers who enjoy walking, a balanced route is:
Visitor Centre – scenic shuttle to Zhongtai – Huangcheng – Leisheng Peak area – Xiangshan – scenic shuttle back
This allows you to climb through the most culturally interesting central section without spending the entire day ascending from the mountain base.
The mountain contains the historic Kongtong Ancient Architectural Complex (崆峒山古建筑群), including temples, halls, pagodas and cliffside structures developed over many dynasties. The mountain is traditionally described as having eight terraces, nine palaces and numerous temples and cave sites.
Travellers with limited mobility should use more of the scenic transport system and concentrate on Zhongtai and the principal temple complexes rather than attempting every ridge.
Allow six to eight hours for a meaningful visit. The stone steps can be steep, and rushing downhill at the end of the day is particularly tiring on the knees.
Day 3: Museum, Local Culture and Departure
If you did not visit Pingliang Museum on Day 1, make it the main attraction of the morning. Afterwards, explore the city at a slower pace and have a traditional Longdong lunch before departure.
Travellers leaving east toward Shaanxi can alternatively use Day 3 to continue to Jingchuan County, transforming Pingliang into part of an overland route toward Xi’an.
Four to Five Days: Pingliang Cultural and Mountain Tour
With additional time, avoid simply adding more city attractions. Pingliang’s strongest secondary experiences are outside the urban centre.
A good route is:
Pingliang – Kongtong Mountain – Jingchuan – Chongxin – Huating
Jingchuan: Buddhist Heritage
Jingchuan County (泾川县) is one of the best additions for travellers interested in Silk Road and Buddhist history. Its key attractions include Dayun Temple and Wangmu Palace Scenic Area (大云寺·王母宫景区) and the South Grotto Temple (南石窟寺).
The South Grotto Temple belongs to the wider Northern Dynasties grotto tradition of eastern Gansu and complements visits to other major grotto complexes in the region. Jingchuan works particularly well for travellers continuing toward Xi’an because it lies east of central Pingliang.
Chongxin: Longquan Temple
Longquan Temple (龙泉寺) is a National 4A attraction just north of Chongxin county town. The landscape combines forested hills, numerous springs, religious architecture and local traditions related to early Zhou agricultural culture. Official information records more than a hundred natural spring outlets around the scenic area.
It is a gentler experience than Kongtong Mountain and works well after a demanding hiking day.
Huating: Guanshan Lianhuatai
For mountain scenery, extend south to Guanshan Lianhuatai Scenic Area (关山莲花台景区) in Huating. The scenic area became a National 4A attraction in late 2025 and lies within a heavily forested section of the Guanshan Mountains. It combines forests, grasslands, waterfalls, karst features and cultural remains, with elevations reaching about 2,749 metres.
Summer and early autumn are the most practical seasons for this extension.
Five to Seven Days: Deeper Pingliang Tour
Travellers interested in rural landscapes can continue toward Zhuanglang County (庄浪县).
The two main themes are Yunya Temple (云崖寺) and the famous Zhuanglang Terraces (庄浪梯田). The terraced landscape represents generations of farming on the Loess Plateau and changes dramatically with the season: spring cultivation, green summer fields and golden autumn harvests each create a different atmosphere.
Further west, Jingning County (静宁县) is associated with ancient Chengji culture, Long March history and one of China’s important apple-growing regions. Official county information records 148 cultural sites from periods including Yangshao and Qijia cultures.
Jingning is less about conventional sightseeing and more appropriate for travellers interested in agriculture, local history and slower county-level exploration.
How to Get to Pingliang
By Train
As of August 2026, Pingliang does not yet have direct high-speed rail service. Current railway connections are conventional passenger trains on the existing network. For example, current Pingliang–Xi’an services generally take around five hours rather than the roughly 2.5 hours sometimes quoted in older travel articles.
New railway projects are progressing, including the Pingliang–Qingyang and Dingxi–Pingliang corridors, but these are still under development rather than available to ordinary tourists.
Always check the current 12306 timetable rather than relying on fixed train numbers published in older guides.
By Air
Pingliang’s airport is also still under construction in 2026, so it should not yet be treated as an operational arrival option. Municipal reports in June 2026 continued to list Pingliang Airport among major projects under construction.
For international travellers, the most practical aviation gateways are therefore Xi’an, Lanzhou or Yinchuan, followed by rail or road travel.
By Road
Road travel is currently the most flexible way to reach and explore Pingliang. The municipality is linked by expressways toward Xi’an, Lanzhou, Yinchuan, Baoji and Qingyang, and all counties are now connected to the expressway network.
A private car is especially valuable once you leave Kongtong District because attractions in Jingchuan, Huating, Zhuanglang and Jingning are widely separated.
Getting Around Pingliang
Within central Pingliang, taxis and ride-hailing services are sufficient for hotels, restaurants, Liuhu Park and city attractions.
For Kongtong Mountain, use the official visitor-centre transport system rather than trying to reach individual mountain entrances independently.
For county-level touring, private transport is strongly recommended. A practical principle is to sleep in the direction you are travelling, rather than returning to Pingliang city every night.
For example:
Pingliang – Jingchuan – onward to Xi’an
or
Pingliang – Chongxin – Huating – Zhuanglang – Jingning
Both are more efficient than repeated round trips.
Best Time to Visit Pingliang
June to September is particularly attractive because Pingliang is one of eastern Gansu’s best summer destinations. Official 2026 tourism information gives an average summer temperature of about 20°C, with a July average of approximately 21.8°C and typical day–night temperature differences of 14–16°C. Kongtong Mountain is cooler again at night.

Where to Stay
Kongtong District is the best general base. Stay in the city centre if restaurants, transport and evening activities matter most, or around Kongtong Ancient Town if your priority is an early start on the mountain.
For longer journeys, consider changing hotels rather than commuting:

What to Eat in Pingliang
Pingliang’s food is closely connected with wheat, buckwheat and cattle and sheep farming. Heluo noodles (饸饹面) are one of the most characteristic everyday dishes, while beef and mutton dishes are widely available throughout the city.
Pingliang Red Cattle (平凉红牛) is an important regional agricultural product and appears in hotpot, grilled dishes and local restaurants. Other foods worth trying include mutton paomo, niangpi cold noodles, guokui flatbread and local handmade noodles.
When travelling west, Jingning roast chicken (静宁烧鸡) and Jingning apples (静宁苹果) are among the best-known local specialties.
Practical Travel Tips
Wear non-slip walking shoes on Kongtong Mountain. The combination of stone stairs, steep ridges and occasional rain makes ordinary city shoes unsuitable.
Do not underestimate the temperature difference between city streets and mountain summits. Even in midsummer, carry a lightweight outer layer.
During the summer rainy season, check weather warnings before visiting mountain valleys and forest areas. Avoid undeveloped gorges, riverbeds and unofficial hiking trails after heavy rain.
Book Kongtong Mountain through official channels during weekends, summer holidays and major festivals. The scenic area uses seasonal operating policies and can introduce crowd-control measures during peak periods.
For cultural travellers, do not spend the entire trip on Kongtong Mountain. Pingliang Museum, Jingchuan Buddhist heritage and the county-level cultural landscapes are what turn a one-attraction visit into a genuine Pingliang journey.
Pingliang Tours with Yaso Trip
A Pingliang Tour with Yaso Trip can combine Kongtong Mountain, Pingliang Museum, Jingchuan Buddhist heritage, Chongxin Longquan Temple, Huating Lianhuatai, Zhuanglang Terraces and Jingning culture according to available time and onward travel direction.
For first-time international visitors, a four-day private journey from Pingliang through Kongtong Mountain, Jingchuan and Chongxin or Huating provides a comfortable balance of Daoist culture, Buddhist heritage, mountain landscapes and local life without excessive driving.
