Longnan (陇南市) feels very different from the desert-and-oasis image many travellers associate with Gansu. Located in the mountainous transition zone between the Qinling Mountains, Minshan Mountains and the Sichuan Basin, it is one of the greenest parts of the province, with forested valleys, waterfalls, alpine lakes, karst caves, Tibetan villages, tea-growing countryside and deeply cut river gorges.
Longnan administers Wudu District (武都区) and eight counties—Dangchang, Wenxian, Chengxian, Kangxian, Xihe, Lixian, Huixian and Liangdang—and its attractions are spread across a very large mountainous area. The city currently has one National 5A attraction and numerous 4A scenic areas, while municipal tourism planning focuses on Guan’egou, Wanshang Cave, Wenxian Tianchi, Kangxian, the Jialing River corridor and other nature-and-culture destinations.
The most important planning principle is therefore simple: do not try to visit Longnan through repeated day trips from Wudu. Divide the city into geographical clusters and change hotels as you travel.

Essential Longnan Attractions
Guan’egou Scenic Area
Guan’egou Scenic Area (官鹅沟大景区) in Dangchang County is Longnan’s signature destination and its National 5A Tourist Attraction. The wider landscape contains glacially influenced mountain scenery, lakes, waterfalls, deep gorges, forests and settlements associated with local Tibetan and Qiang-related cultural traditions. Provincial tourism information lists Guan’egou among Gansu’s premier scenic areas.
The scenic area is large, and a full day is preferable. Visitors generally use scenic transport for the longer approach sections and then explore waterfalls and forest valleys on foot.
Guan’egou is particularly attractive from late spring through autumn. During the rainy season, however, canyon access, shuttle services and individual walking sections may change at short notice.
Hadapu Red Army Long March Heritage
Hadapu (哈达铺), also in Dangchang County, is one of Gansu’s most important Long March heritage destinations. Historic buildings, former residences and exhibition spaces document the Red Army’s activities in the town and its role during the Long March.
Dangchang officially develops its tourism around the combination of “red, green and ancient” resources: Hadapu revolutionary heritage, Guan’egou ecological landscapes and older local cultural traditions.
Guan’egou and Hadapu work well together, but they should not be squeezed into a rushed half-day excursion from Wudu.
Wanshang Cave
Wanshang Cave (万象洞) in Wudu District is Longnan’s principal karst attraction and an officially listed National 4A Tourist Attraction.
The cave contains large chambers, stalactites, stalagmites and other limestone formations. Its cool interior makes it comfortable during summer, but steps can be damp and slippery. Wear shoes with reliable grip and carry a light outer layer.
Because it is relatively close to Wudu city, Wanshang Cave is ideal for an arrival or departure day.
Wenxian Tianchi
Wenxian Tianchi (文县天池) is a mountain lake surrounded by densely forested slopes at roughly 1,700 metres above sea level. It is one of the most distinctive lake landscapes in southeastern Gansu and forms part of the wider ecological corridor that includes protected forest and wildlife habitats.
The landscape is most impressive in clear weather, when the deep blue-green lake contrasts with the surrounding mountains. Fog and rain can completely change visibility, so avoid scheduling the visit around a tight same-day onward connection.
Baima Tibetan Cultural Area
The most representative Baima Tibetan (白马人) communities are concentrated primarily in Wenxian County, rather than Wudu city. Villages along the Baima River and surrounding mountain areas preserve distinctive clothing, songs, rituals and the nationally recognized Chigezhou / Chige Zhou mask dance (池哥昼).
This cultural experience is best arranged through local communities or an experienced guide. Traditional performances should not be assumed to operate continuously for tourists.
Xixiasong Scenic Area
Xixiasong Scenic Area (西狭颂景区) in Chengxian County is a National 4A attraction combining a wooded gorge with one of the region’s most important Han-period cliff inscriptions.
It is particularly suitable for travellers who prefer history integrated with natural scenery rather than conventional museum visits. Allow at least half a day for the valley walk and inscription area.
Yunping Three Gorges
Yunping Three Gorges (云屏三峡) in Liangdang County consists of three connected mountain gorges surrounded by dense forest, cliffs, streams and historic routes through the Qinling region. It is one of eastern Longnan’s most peaceful landscape destinations.
Liangdang is also known for the Liangdang Mutiny Memorial (两当兵变纪念馆), making it possible to combine ecological and revolutionary tourism in the same county. Official Longnan sources continue to promote both Yunping and the memorial as important tourism resources.
Recommended Longnan Itineraries
Three Days: Wudu and Dangchang Highlights
Day 1: Wudu – Wanshang Cave
Arrive at Longnan Railway Station (陇南站) and use Wudu as the first-night base. Visit Wanshang Cave, then spend the evening around Wanshang Street or central Wudu.
Day 2: Wudu – Guan’egou
Drive to Dangchang and devote most of the day to Guan’egou. Stay in Dangchang rather than returning to Wudu.
Day 3: Hadapu – Departure
Visit Hadapu’s Long March heritage before continuing toward Wudu, Lanzhou or the next destination.
This is the easiest introduction for travellers with limited time.
Five Days: Classic Longnan Mountains and Culture
Wudu – Dangchang – Guan’egou – Hadapu – Wenxian – Tianchi
Spend the first day around Wudu, two days in Dangchang and the final two days around Wenxian.
This route provides the strongest contrast between karst caves, alpine valleys, revolutionary history, mountain lakes and Baima Tibetan culture without crossing the entire municipality.
Six Days: Mountains, Han Culture and Qinling Forests
Wudu – Guan’egou – Hadapu – Chengxian – Huixian – Liangdang
After Dangchang, travel east toward Chengxian for Xixiasong before continuing through the Jialing River region to Liangdang.
This is particularly good for travellers continuing toward Hanzhong or Xi’an rather than returning west.
Eight to Ten Days: Complete Longnan Journey
A deeper journey can follow:
Dangchang – Wudu – Wenxian – Chengxian – Kangxian – Huixian – Liangdang
Add Xihe and Lixian when Qiqiao folk culture, early Qin history and archaeological themes are priorities.
This route should be treated as a road journey through southeastern Gansu rather than as a conventional city tour.
How to Get to Longnan
By Train
Longnan Railway Station in Wudu is the principal rail gateway. It lies on the Lanzhou–Chongqing railway corridor and has direct passenger services connecting Longnan with major cities including Lanzhou and destinations toward Sichuan and Chongqing.
Timetables and train categories change, so check 12306 rather than relying on a fixed journey time published in an older travel guide.
By Air
Longnan Chengxian Airport (陇南成县机场) is a functioning civil airport northeast of Chengxian. It has a 2,800-metre runway and has operated since 2018.
Flights are much less frequent than services to major provincial airports, so confirm the current seasonal timetable before building the rest of the itinerary around an air connection.
The airport is more convenient for Chengxian, Huixian and Liangdang than for Wenxian or Guan’egou.
Getting Around Longnan
Longnan is one of those destinations where private road transport significantly improves the trip. County towns have buses, but sightseeing sites are often far from bus terminals, and mountain-road connections may require several transfers.
For a multi-county trip, choose a private vehicle with an experienced local driver or self-drive only if you are comfortable with mountain roads.
Do not underestimate driving time. Roads may involve steep gradients, tunnels, sharp bends, village traffic and temporary controls caused by rainfall or maintenance.
The municipal tourism plan specifically identifies improved access to Tianchi and the Jialing River gorge region as an ongoing priority, which reflects the fact that transport remains an important part of Longnan trip planning.
Best Time to Visit Longnan
April to June and September to early November provide the most reliable overall conditions for sightseeing. Mountains are green, temperatures are comfortable and rainfall risk is generally lower than during the height of summer.
July and August are lush and relatively cool in high mountain areas, making Longnan attractive as a summer escape, but they are also the period requiring the greatest attention to rainfall, landslides and flash floods.
September and October are especially good for photography. Forests begin changing colour, humidity decreases and sites such as Guan’egou, Yunping and the Jialing River region can be particularly attractive.
Winter is quiet and suitable for cultural sites, Wudu and selected county towns, but mountain roads and high-elevation attractions may be affected by snow or ice.
Current Flood-Season Safety
This is especially important for a summer 2026 Longnan trip. July brought repeated heavy-rain warnings affecting Longnan, with meteorological authorities specifically warning of mountain torrents, landslides and debris flows.
Longnan’s current disaster-warning rules allow orange and red meteorological warnings to trigger suspension of outdoor activities and other emergency measures.
As of August 7, 2026, current forecast information also indicates rain in the Longnan/Wudu area before conditions improve, so travellers should check conditions again on the morning of departure.
I would not rely on the claim that “61 scenic areas are currently closed” unless it is confirmed on the day of travel. Flood-season closures in Longnan are temporary and can change quickly. Check the official account of each scenic area and local weather, natural-resources and transport notices before travelling to Guan’egou, Wenxian Tianchi, Yunping Three Gorges, Yangba, river valleys or mountain trails.
If an orange or red warning is issued, replace mountain and waterside activities with museums, city heritage and indoor experiences.

Wudu has the widest choice of conventional hotels. For Guan’egou and the eastern forest counties, locally run guesthouses can offer a stronger sense of place, but confirm heating or air-conditioning, private bathrooms, parking and luggage access before booking.
What to Eat in Longnan
Longnan food combines Gansu wheat-and-potato traditions with flavours influenced by neighbouring Sichuan and Shaanxi.
Potato Jiaotuan (洋芋搅团) is one of the most characteristic local staples, made by repeatedly pounding cooked potatoes until smooth and serving them with sour or spicy seasoning. Longnan cured pork (陇南腊肉) is particularly common in the greener southern and eastern counties, while walnut breads, handmade noodles, oil tea and local pickled vegetables are widely available.
Wudu is also one of China’s important olive-growing regions, so locally produced olive oil and olive products make distinctive souvenirs.
Kangxian and parts of southern Longnan have tea-growing landscapes, while Wenxian and the mountain counties offer dishes influenced by local Tibetan and rural food traditions.
Common Longnan Tour Planning Mistakes

Keep one flexible backup day |
Practical Travel Advice
Use non-slip walking shoes for Guan’egou, Xixiasong and mountain gorges. Paths can remain wet long after rainfall.
Carry a lightweight waterproof jacket even in summer. Temperatures can fall noticeably in higher valleys and around Tianchi.
Mosquito and insect repellent is useful in the heavily forested counties, particularly from late spring through early autumn.
Avoid parking below unstable slopes during prolonged rain. Never stop inside dry riverbeds, narrow ravines or underneath freshly eroded cliffs for photography.
For international visitors, carry the passport used for hotel registration and ticket bookings, particularly when visiting museums, memorial sites and attractions using real-name reservation systems.
Longnan Tours with Yaso Trip
A Longnan Tour with Yaso Trip can combine Guan’egou, Wanshang Cave, Wenxian Tianchi, Baima Tibetan villages, Xixiasong, Kangxian forest countryside, Yunping Three Gorges and Hadapu according to the season and onward travel direction.
For first-time travellers, a five-day private journey through Wudu, Dangchang and Wenxian offers the best balance of mountain scenery, cultural diversity and manageable driving. Travellers continuing toward Xi’an or Hanzhong can instead use a six-day eastbound route through Chengxian, Huixian and Liangdang.
