Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture (临夏回族自治州) has one of the most distinctive festival calendars in northwest China. Hui, Dongxiang, Bao’an, Salar, Han and other communities have lived together in the upper Yellow River region for generations, creating a cultural landscape where Hua’er folk singing, Islamic religious traditions, ethnic handicrafts, flower festivals, Yellow River culture, food, outdoor sports and seasonal tourism activities overlap throughout the year.
The most important cultural symbol is Hua’er (花儿). UNESCO inscribed Hua’er on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009, describing it as a musical tradition shared by nine ethnic groups across Gansu, Qinghai and other parts of north-central China. Linxia is one of its principal living centres, and the traditional Songmingyan Hua’er Festival (松鸣岩花儿会) in Hezheng and Lianhuashan Hua’er Festival (莲花山花儿会) in Kangle are both included in China’s national intangible cultural heritage system.
Linxia’s modern festival calendar is now much broader than traditional folk gatherings. In 2026, the prefecture linked spring flower tourism, museums, intangible heritage, marathon events, summer concerts and night performances into a longer tourism season. Major examples include the Tangwang Apricot Blossom Tourism Series, Yongjing Tulip Cultural Tourism Series, Hezhou Peony Cultural Carnival, Songmingyan and Lianhuashan Hua’er gatherings and summer night performances across several counties.
Hua’er: Linxia’s Most Important Festival Tradition
Hua’er is not simply a staged folk song. Traditionally, singers improvise lyrics according to established melodic patterns and meet at mountain gatherings to sing alone, in pairs or in groups. The lyrics may discuss love, work, family, local life or contemporary society. UNESCO emphasizes Hua’er’s importance as a form of communication and cultural exchange shared across ethnic communities.
Songmingyan Hua’er Festival
Songmingyan Hua’er Festival takes place at Songmingyan (松鸣岩) in Hezheng County. The traditional gathering is held around the 26th to 29th days of the fourth lunar month and has a history stretching back several centuries. Songmingyan Hua’er was included in China’s first national intangible cultural heritage list in 2006.
In 2026, the major western-China Hua’er singer event at Songmingyan ran from June 11 to 13, beginning on the 26th day of the fourth lunar month. More than 50 singers from northwest China participated, while both formal stage performances and spontaneous singing continued throughout the mountain area.
For visitors, Songmingyan is the best place to experience the Hezhou branch of Hua’er in its traditional landscape rather than only through a theatre performance.
Lianhuashan Hua’er Festival
The Lianhuashan Hua’er Festival is centred on the mountains around Kangle County and traditionally runs through the first six days of the sixth lunar month. Singing groups historically move through several gathering points, including Zuguchuan and Tangfangtan, singing through the day and often into the night. The festival became a national intangible cultural heritage project in 2006.
In 2026, the sixth day of the sixth lunar month fell on July 19, and Kangle County commissioned its Fifth Lianhuashan Hua’er Cultural Series, including the traditional “Sixth of the Sixth” Hua’er performance. Because formal stage programs may differ from the longer folk gathering, travellers should confirm the county’s final annual timetable rather than assuming every activity occurs on one day.
Spring Flower Festivals: March to May
Spring has developed into one of Linxia’s most active tourism seasons. Rather than concentrating on one large festival, different counties bloom in sequence.
Tangwang Apricot Blossom Tourism Series
Tangwang Town (唐汪镇) in Dongxiang Autonomous County is famous for extensive apricot orchards. The 2026 Tangwang Apricot Blossom Tourism Series officially opened on April 3 and combined the flower landscape with Dongxiang Hua’er, traditional handicrafts, food, parades, photography and local markets. The program contained 22 themed activities.
This is one of the best festival periods for combining Dongxiang culture + spring scenery + halal food, especially the county’s famous hand-grabbed mutton.
Yongjing Tulip Cultural Tourism Series
In 2026, the Yongjing Tulip Cultural Tourism Series ran from April 12 to May 20, with 32 activities spread across the tulip park, Yellow River areas, Taiji Island and other venues.
Programs included Hua’er and other intangible heritage performances, photography, music, traditional costume activities, rural sports, markets, bonfire events and the China Yellow River Paddleboard Race.
This makes spring particularly suitable for combining the flower festival with Liujiaxia Reservoir, the Yellow–Tao River confluence and Bingling Temple.
Nanyuan Peach Blossom Activities
Nanyuan (南塬) in Linxia County holds spring peach-blossom activities, normally during April. In 2026 the tourism program combined blossom viewing with costume shows, calligraphy and painting exhibitions and food events.
Hezheng Pear Blossom Season
Hezheng County also uses its extensive highland pear orchards for a spring Pear Blossom Outing Season, with family runs, folk-cultural experiences and outdoor activities. It serves as a natural transition from early spring flower tourism into the county’s later Hua’er and fossil-study season.
Hezhou Peony Cultural Carnival
The Hezhou Peony Cultural Carnival (河州牡丹文化嘉年华) has become Linxia City’s largest modern seasonal festival program.
The 2026 edition opened on April 30 and was designed to continue through October, with 84 activities distributed among the Hezhou Peony Cultural Park, Bafang Shisanxiang, Flowering Linxia Night City, the Hundred-Li Peony Corridor and other city venues.
Programs range from flower exhibitions, costume shows and craft workshops to music festivals, intangible heritage performances, markets, sports events, night tours and interactive theatrical experiences. It is therefore better understood as a six-month urban cultural season rather than a single-day flower festival.
Intangible Heritage and Museum Events
Linxia has increasingly brought traditional culture into museums, squares and tourism districts.
On May 18, 2026, the Linxia Prefecture Museum hosted an International Museum Day Hua’er performance featuring 17 traditional and contemporary songs.
On May 24, the prefecture organized its 2026 intangible cultural heritage showcase in Linxia City. Performances included Hua’er, Hezhou Xianxiao (河州贤孝), Dongxiang traditional sports, folk dances and other local traditions, while craft demonstrations included Linxia brick carving, Bao’an knife forging, gourd carving, wood carving and Dongxiang embroidery.
These public heritage events are often easier for foreign travellers to attend than village ceremonies because schedules, venues and demonstrations are specifically arranged for visitors.
Summer Sports, Music and Night Festivals
Summer is now Linxia’s busiest period for combined cultural and outdoor events.
The 2026 “Summer Paradise · Wellness Linxia” Marathon was held on June 14 in Linxia City and attracted nearly 10,000 runners. Hua’er, handicrafts and other intangible heritage performances were arranged along the route, linking sport with local culture.
During summer 2026, Bafang Shisanxiang hosted the immersive production Flowering Linxia: Five Thousand Years, while Flowering Linxia Night City operated large numbers of regular night performances involving heritage shows, parades, electronic music and lighting. Kangle’s Zhuzigou (竹子沟) held regular grassland concerts combining Hua’er, contemporary music, bonfires and evening entertainment.
These programs are tourism events rather than fixed traditional festivals, so their exact dates and performance frequencies should be checked each year.
Muslim Religious Festivals in Linxia
Linxia is home to large Hui, Dongxiang, Bao’an and Salar Muslim communities, so Eid al-Fitr (开斋节) and Eid al-Adha / Corban Festival (古尔邦节) are among the most important annual religious occasions for many local families.
Dates follow the Islamic lunar calendar and move roughly 10–11 days earlier each Gregorian year. Mosque prayers, family visits, festive meals and charitable giving are central to the celebrations.
For tourism planning, however, these should be understood differently from Hua’er festivals or flower carnivals. Eid is primarily a religious and family occasion, not a public tourist performance. Visitors should not enter mosque prayer areas, photograph worshippers at close range or treat religious ceremonies as staged attractions without permission.
The same principle applies to Mawlid / Shengji (圣纪) and other Islamic observances. Local practices can differ among communities, and some events may be private or centred on religious institutions.
For Muslim travellers, these periods can nevertheless be meaningful times to visit family-oriented neighbourhoods and enjoy festive halal foods, provided prayer schedules and community customs are respected.
Dongxiang, Bao’an and Salar Cultural Experiences
Dongxiang Autonomous County
Dongxiang’s most accessible major tourism event is the spring Tangwang Apricot Blossom Series, but Dongxiang culture appears throughout the year through food festivals, Hua’er performances, traditional sports, embroidery and rural-cultural programs.
The 2026 prefecture-wide intangible heritage showcase, for example, included Dongxiang Bagun (东乡族拔棍) and Dongxiang embroidery.
Jishishan Autonomous County
Jishishan Bao’an, Dongxiang and Salar Autonomous County is the principal place to explore Bao’an heritage. Bao’an knife forging (保安族腰刀锻制技艺) is one of the area’s most important living crafts, while embroidery, clothing and food reflect the county’s multi-ethnic character.
These experiences are increasingly incorporated into workshops and study programs, but there is no single fixed annual “Bao’an Festival” that should automatically be advertised to tourists. Current development plans emphasize craft demonstrations, workshops and heritage-study tourism instead.
Guanghe and Qijia Cultural Activities
Guanghe County (广河县) is better known for Qijia Culture (齐家文化) and Muslim community life than for one large fixed tourist festival.
The Qijia Culture Museum operates archaeological education and study programs throughout the year, introducing the approximately 4,300–3,500-year-old Qijia culture first identified at Qijiaping in Guanghe.
For a festival-oriented itinerary, Guanghe is best combined with prefecture-wide heritage events, Muslim cultural experiences or museum programs whose dates are announced annually.
Autumn and Winter Events
The Hezhou Peony Cultural Carnival continues into October in 2026, giving Linxia City a long autumn program of performances, markets and cultural activities. National Day and Mid-Autumn periods also normally bring additional night shows and tourism programs, although individual schedules vary each year.
Winter is quieter in the mountain counties, but Linxia City increasingly develops Spring Festival programs. During the 2026 Chinese New Year period, Flowering Linxia Night City staged New Year markets, lion dances, traditional performances and a themed fire show from February 15 to March 3.
Festival Travel Tips
For the two major Hua’er festivals, book accommodation early. Songmingyan and Lianhuashan can attract very large crowds, and traffic around mountain venues becomes significantly slower during peak gathering days.
Public transport is possible for some county towns, but a private vehicle or chartered car is much more practical when combining Linxia City with Hezheng, Kangle, Dongxiang or Yongjing.
Spring blossom dates depend heavily on temperature. The exact peak of apricot, peach, pear, tulip and peony flowering should therefore be checked shortly before travel.
For religious festivals, dress conservatively and give worshippers privacy. Visitors should not expect mosque interiors, religious meals or family gatherings to be automatically open to tourists.
Summer festivals coincide with Linxia’s rainy season. Following the July 2026 heavy-rain emergency, Linxia City’s A-rated attractions began reopening in an orderly manner on July 17 after safety inspections, but mountain and county conditions can differ. Always confirm the specific venue before attending an outdoor festival.

Festival Tours with Yaso Trip
A Linxia Festival Tour with Yaso Trip can be designed around the prefecture’s strongest seasonal events rather than simply adding a festival to an ordinary sightseeing itinerary.
For traditional music, the best period is the Songmingyan Hua’er Festival in late spring/early summer or the Lianhuashan Hua’er Festival around the sixth lunar month. A cultural program can combine Linxia City – Bafang Shisanxiang – Hezheng – Songmingyan – Kangle, with Hua’er performances, local food and intangible heritage workshops.
For spring photography and ethnic culture, a route can combine Dongxiang Tangwang Apricot Blossom – Linxia City Peony Carnival – Yongjing Tulip Festival – Hezheng Pear Blossom landscapes.
Muslim-focused festival tours can be arranged around Linxia City, Dongxiang, Guanghe and Jishishan, with halal meals, prayer-compatible schedules and community visits arranged respectfully. Religious occasions such as Eid should remain centred on worship and family life rather than being presented as tourist performances.
