  • Linxia Dining

Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture (临夏回族自治州) is one of the most distinctive food destinations in northwestern China. Historically known as Hezhou (河州), the region sits between the Loess Plateau and the northeastern Tibetan Plateau, where farming, pastoral traditions, Silk Road commerce and the food cultures of Hui, Dongxiang, Bonan, Salar, Han and other communities have interacted for centuries.

The result is a recognizable regional cuisine promoted today under the name “Hezhou Flavor · Linxia Cuisine” (河州味道·临夏美食). Lamb and beef form the heart of many meals, but Linxia food is much broader: steamed buns, noodles, offal dishes, fermented grains, fried pastries, freshwater fish, mountain mushrooms, rural chicken dishes and fragrant covered-bowl tea all have an important place at the table. In 2026, Linxia reported more than 30,000 specialty food businesses employing over 190,000 people, while local authorities continue to develop food streets, restaurant clusters and culinary tourism as a major regional industry.

    Linxia Muslim Food Culture

Muslim food culture is especially visible in Linxia City, Dongxiang County, Guanghe County and Jishishan County. Many restaurants are halal, particularly those serving beef, lamb, noodles and Hui or Dongxiang cuisine, but visitors should still look for the 清真 (qingzhen / halal) sign rather than assuming that every restaurant in the prefecture follows halal standards.

Linxia’s food culture is strongly based on hospitality. A substantial meal commonly begins with Eight-Treasure Covered-Bowl Tea (八宝盖碗茶) and continues with lamb, cold dishes, noodles or steamed foods. Hand-grabbed lamb is often shared at the center of the table, while large gatherings may feature banquet dishes such as Hezhou Eight Bowls, Pinghuo Lamb or traditional warm pots.

The local government has formalized the cuisine into categories including Ten Famous Dishes, Ten Famous Snacks, Ten Famous Pastries, Ten Famous Noodle Bowls and Ten Famous Banquets, reflecting how food has become both cultural heritage and a tourism brand.

The prefectural cultural-tourism authority identifies hand-grabbed lamb, Yellow River carp, sweet fermented grain and Hezhou buns among the signature foods representing Linxia. Guanghe is particularly associated with sweet fermented grain, while Dongxiang hand-grabbed lamb remains the best-known meat specialty.

Main Food Areas in Linxia City

    Bafang Shisanxiang

Bafang Shisanxiang – Eight Lanes and Thirteen Alleys (八坊十三巷) is the best place for first-time visitors to combine food with the architecture and Muslim culture of old Hezhou. Snack shops and small restaurants are mixed among traditional residences, brick-carving workshops and cultural spaces.

Typical foods include sweet fermented grain, niangpi, sugar-oil cakes, oil-fried pastries, steamed buns, beef and lamb dishes. In 2026, official tourism reporting continued to describe the quarter as one of the city’s busiest destinations for local snacks, cultural crafts and evening experiences.

Bafang Shisanxiang works best as a tasting area rather than a destination for one large formal meal. Try several small foods while walking, then continue to a specialist lamb restaurant or night market.

    Beidajie Night Market

Beidajie Night Market (北大街夜市) is Linxia’s classic late-evening food street. It is close to Bafang Shisanxiang and concentrates grilled lamb skewers, lamb kidneys, offal pots, dumplings, noodle dishes and other hot snacks within a compact area.

Official food guides describe it as one of the clearest expressions of Linxia’s night economy, and the local market regulator continues to include Beidajie among the city’s key night-food zones.

    Hongyuan Area

The Hongyuan (红园) area has long been associated with casual street food and local social life. During festivals, food stalls around Hongyuan become particularly busy with Muslim snacks, sweets, dried fruit and prepared foods.

Nearby traditional garden spaces are also developing newer dining concepts. In 2026, local reporting highlighted young restaurateurs experimenting with combinations such as covered-bowl tea culture and hot pot, alongside modern desserts inspired by Linxia peonies.

Chama Ancient Market and Central City

Chama Ancient Market Pedestrian Street (茶马古市步行街) and the surrounding central commercial districts are convenient for breakfast, noodles, steamed buns and casual restaurants. The area is monitored as one of Linxia’s active night-food districts alongside Beidajie and Tuanjie North Road.

    Zheqiaowan

Zheqiaowan (折桥湾) is quite different from the old-city food streets. It is a suburban rural dining district where clusters of farmhouse restaurants serve Dongxiang hand-grabbed lamb, kangguo lamb, Hezhou banquet dishes and covered-bowl tea in garden-style surroundings.

During summer 2026, Zheqiaowan remained a popular dining and leisure destination for visitors from Lanzhou, Xining and neighboring areas, combining rural scenery with large family meals.

    Recommended Restaurants in Linxia City

Restaurant ownership, branches and opening times can change, so reservations or same-day map checks are advisable.

Dongxiang Renjia Shouzhua Yuan is also currently listed in Linxia City and specializes in Dongxiang hand-grabbed lamb and regional dishes.

For larger groups, Hezhou Hongrui International Hotel operates extensive restaurant and banquet facilities and specifically promotes a menu combining northwest Chinese cuisine with local Linxia dishes. Tianyuan Wanda Jin Hotel has Chinese and all-day dining restaurants, and its current hotel information includes halal breakfast options.

The prefecture’s official Taizi Mountain tourism program specifically recommends foods such as Kangle clear-water beef ribs, Kangle Danggui chicken, hand-grabbed lamb, beef and lamb offal, Hezhou warm pot, Yellow-wine lamb, niangpi, sweet fermented grain and buckwheat jelly.

Dongxiang: The Heartland of Lamb Cuisine

For travelers particularly interested in lamb, Dongxiang Autonomous County deserves more than a quick restaurant stop. Its Hundred-Li Food Scenic Corridor has developed around Dongxiang Gongyang lamb, local restaurants and rural tourism.

Traditional hand-grabbed lamb remains central, but contemporary restaurants increasingly offer whole lamb prepared in two or three styles, roasted lamb, nang-pit lamb, seasonal medicinal-herb lamb soups and smaller modern portions. The county also combines its food tourism with Tangwang apricots, highland grains and village culture.

For groups, a Dongxiang whole-lamb or Pinghuo meal is one of the most culturally representative dining experiences in Linxia.

Yongjing: Yellow River Fish and Lakeside Dining

Yongjing County provides the strongest contrast to Linxia’s lamb-centered food image. Around Liuji 按 reservoir and the Yellow River, menus commonly include Yellow River carp, trout, local fish dishes, lentil noodles and regional lamb dishes.

Official tourism programs recommend establishments and farmhouse restaurants around the reservoir area and specifically identify Yellow River carp, trout, lentil noodles, hand-grabbed lamb and local rural dishes as representative foods.

Qingzhen Wensheng Hand-Grabbed Lamb King (清真文胜手抓大王) remains listed in Yongjing, with hand-grabbed lamb and red-braised carp among its recognized dishes.

Hezheng and Kangle: Mountain and Farm Cuisine

Southern Linxia becomes greener and cooler around Hezheng and Kangle, and the food changes with the landscape. Farm-raised chicken, mushrooms, wild vegetables, eggs and warming lamb dishes become more prominent.

Tourism authorities recommend Yunhai Xianting, Xingyu Yunduan and several rural restaurants around Songmingyan for this style of dining. Both Yunhai Xianting and Xingyu Yunduan continue to operate with restaurant facilities in 2026.

Kangle is particularly associated with clear-water beef ribs and Danggui chicken, while both counties are good places for mushrooms and seasonal mountain vegetables.

Muslim Dining Etiquette and Practical Advice

Most specialist Hui, Dongxiang and Bonan restaurants do not serve pork, and many do not serve alcohol. Do not bring pork products or alcoholic drinks into a halal restaurant unless the venue explicitly permits outside beverages.

When traveling with Muslim guests, look for the 清真 sign and confirm requirements directly with the restaurant. This is particularly important in hotel restaurants or rural mixed-menu venues where not every kitchen necessarily follows the same standard.

Large lamb portions are designed for sharing. For two people, ordering several full meat dishes can be excessive; a better approach is to combine a smaller lamb portion with vegetables, noodles and tea.

Covered-bowl tea is often refilled with hot water several times. It is not simply a drink but part of Linxia hospitality, particularly at family meals and traditional restaurants.

During Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr and other important religious periods, restaurant schedules and family dining patterns may change. Visitors should respect prayer times and avoid photographing worshippers without permission.

    One-Day Linxia Food Experience

Begin with beef offal soup or Hezhou buns for breakfast, then spend the morning walking through Bafang Shisanxiang, sampling sweet fermented grain, niangpi and small pastries rather than eating one large meal.

For lunch, choose a specialist restaurant for Dongxiang hand-grabbed lamb, accompanied by covered-bowl tea and a few vegetable dishes. Spend the afternoon exploring local handicrafts, tea houses and the Hongyuan area.

In the evening, move to Beidajie Night Market for grilled lamb, offal dishes and noodles, or choose Zheqiaowan for a slower farmhouse dinner of lamb and Hezhou-style banquet dishes.

    3-Day Linxia Food Culture Tour

A deeper food journey can use Linxia City as the base. Spend the first day exploring Hezhou Muslim food culture, Bafang Shisanxiang and traditional city snacks.

On the second day, travel through Dongxiang County, combining local culture with the Hundred-Li Food Scenic Corridor and a hand-grabbed lamb or whole-lamb meal.

The third day can focus either on Yongjing, where Yellow River fish and lakeside farmhouse dining accompany the reservoir landscape, or Hezheng and Kangle, where mountain scenery is paired with chicken, mushrooms, beef and seasonal farm ingredients.

Food Culture Tour with Yaso Trip

A Linxia Food Culture Tour with Yaso Trip can combine local cuisine with Muslim culture, traditional markets, historic neighborhoods and rural communities rather than treating food simply as restaurant stops.

A private food-focused program can include Bafang Shisanxiang food tasting, a traditional covered-bowl tea experience, Dongxiang hand-grabbed lamb, a whole-lamb group meal, Yongjing Yellow River fish, Hezheng or Kangle farmhouse cuisine, and visits to local markets or food-production communities.

For Muslim travelers, meals can be arranged around verified halal restaurants, while larger groups can use established hotel banquet facilities for Hezhou-style dinners and regional tasting menus. Private transport is especially useful for reaching Dongxiang’s food corridor, Zheqiaowan, Yongjing lakeside restaurants and mountain farmhouse clusters.
