Yumen (玉门市) is unlike the better-known tourist cities of the Hexi Corridor. Rather than monumental imperial architecture or heavily developed desert resorts, its strongest identity comes from China’s petroleum industry, Iron Man Wang Jinxi, red industrial heritage, vast Gobi landscapes and emerging off-road tourism. For travellers interested in modern Chinese history, industrial archaeology, road trips and remote geology, Yumen offers one of the most unusual stops between Jiayuguan and Dunhuang.
The key to planning Yumen is understanding that it effectively has two urban centres. The present administrative centre is the new city around Yumen Town (玉门镇), where Yumen Railway Station, Yuze Lake and most modern public services are concentrated. The historic Old Yumen urban area (玉门老市区), more than 70 kilometres away, grew around the oilfield and preserves the city’s most important petroleum heritage. The municipal government began relocating from the old oil city to Yumen Town in 2003, creating the unusual two-centre urban structure seen today.
For most visitors, 2 days and 1 night is the minimum worthwhile stay. Three days are better for travellers who want to add Magic Mountain, Chijin Gorge or the Changma area without rushing.
How Many Days Are Needed in Yumen?
| Stay |
Recommended Focus |
Best For |
| 1 Day |
Old Yumen petroleum heritage |
Hexi Corridor stopovers |
| 2 Days / 1 Night |
Old oil city + new city or one Gobi landscape |
First-time visitors |
| 3 Days / 2 Nights |
Petroleum heritage + Magic Mountain or Chijin Gorge + new city |
Classic Yumen tour |
| 4 Days+ |
Add Changma, archaeology, rural areas and deeper off-road exploration |
Self-driving and special-interest travel |
Yumen should not be planned like a compact city break. The old city, new city and natural attractions are widely separated, so one geographical sector per half-day or day is much more realistic.
Understanding Yumen Before You Travel
The Old Yumen urban area is the reason to come if petroleum history is your priority. Yumen Oilfield Red Tourism Scenic Area is a national 4A attraction, a national industrial-tourism demonstration base and a nationally recognised red-tourism destination. Its heritage includes Laojun Temple, Old Well No. 1, Oil City Park, the Iron Man Wang Jinxi Memorial Hall, the 693 Civil Air Defence Project and numerous historic oilfield production and workers’ sites.
The new city is much more convenient for railway arrivals, hotels, restaurants and ordinary urban services. Yuze Lake Park (玉泽湖公园) provides a surprisingly green urban landscape amid the Gobi environment and is currently rated 4A.
A third tourism zone is developing around Magic Mountain (魔山), Chijin Gorge and the Qilian foothills. In 2026, Yumen’s tourism authorities were actively promoting Magic Mountain as an off-road destination, with routes passing geological features such as petrified wood remains, Wave Valley, volcanic formations, Hongliu Gorge and the Ten-Li Gallery.
Recommended 2-Day Yumen Itinerary
Day 1: The Cradle of China’s Petroleum Industry
Make the Old Yumen urban area the focus of the first day. Travellers coming by road from Jiayuguan can head directly toward the old city; passengers arriving by train at Yumen Railway Station should allow substantial transfer time because the station is in Yumen Town rather than the historic oil city.
Begin with Oil City Park (油城公园), where the Wang Jinxi statue and memorial to petroleum geologist Sun Jianchu provide a useful introduction to the personalities associated with Yumen’s oil history.
Continue to the Iron Man Wang Jinxi Memorial Hall (铁人王进喜纪念馆). Wang Jinxi became one of the best-known figures in twentieth-century Chinese industrial history, and the exhibitions explain both his personal story and the wider development of Yumen Oilfield.
The 693 Civil Air Defence Project (693人防工程) adds another layer to the experience. Built from 1969, it preserves underground command and civil-defence spaces associated with the strategic atmosphere of the 1960s and 1970s. It remains one of Yumen’s core ticketed cultural attractions in the city’s 2026 tourism programme.
Finish with Laojun Temple (老君庙) and Yumen Oilfield Old Well No. 1 (玉门油田老一井). The first industrial oil flow was obtained here in 1939, opening a new chapter in China’s modern petroleum development. The surviving well and surrounding industrial remains are among the most historically significant sites in Yumen.
A practical first-day sequence is:
Oil City Park – Iron Man Wang Jinxi Memorial Hall – 693 Civil Air Defence Project – Laojun Temple – Old Well No. 1
Staying overnight in the old city makes sense for travellers who want a slower industrial-history experience. The accommodation market has improved considerably, with several modern chain and smart hotels opening or operating around the Old Yumen bus-station area.
Day 2: Choose Magic Mountain or an Easier Scenic Option
Option A: Magic Mountain for Off-Road and Geology
Choose Yumen Magic Mountain National Geopark / Magic Mountain International Off-Road Park (玉门魔山国家地质公园/魔山国际越野公园) if dramatic Gobi geology and off-road travel are the main reasons for visiting Yumen.
The landscape contains coloured sedimentary hills, eroded valleys, petrified wood, fossil-related geological remains and unusual formations resembling a remote planetary landscape. Yumen’s tourism authorities are actively developing the area as an off-road destination, and an official 2026 inspection travelled through Hongliu Gorge, the petrified-wood area, Wave Valley, volcanic formations and Ten-Li Gallery.
This is not a conventional urban scenic park. Current visitor information lists approximately 09:00–17:00 operating hours with last entry around 16:30, but opening arrangements can change. More importantly, road surfaces and navigation conditions inside the wider landscape can be demanding.
A high-clearance SUV or 4WD vehicle is preferable. Download offline maps, fill the fuel tank before leaving, carry more drinking water than you expect to need and avoid travelling alone into unmarked branches of the route. For international visitors or anyone unfamiliar with desert driving, a local driver or organised off-road vehicle is safer than independent exploration.
Do not attempt unofficial riverbed diversions to reach closed sections or geological sites. If the road to a particular petrified-wood area is closed, treat the closure as final rather than searching for an improvised bypass.
Option B: Chijin Gorge for an Easier Day
For families or travellers without an off-road vehicle, Chijin Gorge Scenic Area (赤金峡旅游风景区) is a much easier second-day choice. The national 4A scenic area combines a reservoir, gorge landscape, greenery and seasonal water recreation. It underwent another round of facility upgrades in 2026, including improvements to walking areas and water-based leisure facilities.
This option is better suited to ordinary cars and visitors who want scenery without committing to remote Gobi driving.
A More Relaxed 3-Day Yumen Plan
| Day |
Area |
Main Experiences |
| Day 1 |
New Yumen City |
Arrival, Yumen Museum, Yuze Lake Park and city orientation |
| Day 2 |
Old Yumen |
Oil City Park, Wang Jinxi Memorial Hall, 693 Project, Laojun Temple and Old Well No. 1 |
| Day 3 |
Gobi / Qilian Area |
Magic Mountain or Chijin Gorge; experienced 4WD travellers can consider a deeper Changma extension |
This three-day structure is more suitable for photography, overseas visitors and travellers continuing along the Silk Road because it avoids repeatedly crossing the large distance between the two urban centres.
Yumen’s current tourism strategy also increasingly connects petroleum heritage with contemporary industry and outdoor travel. In 2026, the Yumen petroleum brand experience was selected for a national “Travel with Brands” programme, while the city continued developing petroleum-industrial and off-road tourism products.
How to Get to Yumen
By Train
Yumen Railway Station (玉门站) is located in Yumen Town, the present-day new city, and serves both the Lanzhou–Xinjiang conventional railway and the Lanzhou–Xinjiang passenger corridor. It is convenient for travellers coming from Jiayuguan, Jiuquan, Zhangye, Dunhuang-area connections and other Hexi Corridor destinations.
Remember that arriving at Yumen Station does not mean you have arrived in the historic petroleum district. The old city remains a substantial road transfer away.
By Road
Self-driving is one of the best ways to visit Yumen because the municipality is large and attractions are dispersed. Yumen fits naturally into a Hexi Corridor road trip between Jiayuguan and Dunhuang/Guazhou.
For the new city and major paved scenic areas, an ordinary vehicle is adequate. For Magic Mountain and more remote Gobi sectors, vehicle choice and route planning become much more important.
Old City–New City Transfers
Road transport operates between the two urban areas, but published online timetables are inconsistent and can become outdated. For a tourism website, it is safer not to hard-code a specific last-bus time or fare. Travellers relying on public transport should confirm departures locally on the same day; visitors with a tight itinerary should arrange a private vehicle in advance.
Best Time to Visit Yumen
April to June and September to October offer the most comfortable overall conditions. Spring and early summer bring relatively moderate temperatures, while September and October are well suited to road trips and Gobi photography.
July and August can still be visited, particularly for Chijin Gorge and summer outdoor activities, but sunlight is intense and exposed desert areas become hot during the middle of the day. Winter is considerably colder and is better suited to specialist industrial-history visits than extended outdoor exploration.
Yumen is extremely dry, windy and exposed. Carry sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, lip balm, moisturiser, drinking water and a wind-resistant outer layer in every season.
Where to Stay
Choose the new city when railway access, restaurants and conventional urban services are the priority. It is also the easiest base for visiting Yuze Lake and the city museum.
Choose the Old Yumen urban area when petroleum heritage is the main purpose of the trip. Staying there eliminates a long return transfer after visiting the oilfield sites, and modern accommodation options are now available near the old-city bus station.
For remote outdoor areas, do not assume that accommodation or camping services will be available simply because they appear on a map. Confirm any desert lodge, campground or rural guesthouse before departure.
Food and Local Experience
Yumen’s food follows the broader Hexi Corridor tradition, with beef and mutton, hand-pulled noodles, niangpi cold noodles, dumplings, grilled meat and filling wheat-based dishes forming the core of local dining.
The old oil city is also interesting for its social history. Restaurants, workers’ neighbourhoods, former industrial facilities and old photographs preserve memories of a period when people from across China came to Yumen to build the petroleum industry. Eating in the old city after visiting the industrial heritage often adds more context than treating the sites as isolated monuments.
Important Travel and Safety Advice
Treat Magic Mountain as a remote outdoor destination. Mobile-phone coverage may be unreliable, internal roads may be rough and route conditions can change. Do not depend entirely on online navigation.
Carry sufficient fuel and water. Services are sparse once you leave the main urban and highway corridors.
Do not enter closed or undeveloped areas. Yumen has extensive Gobi, industrial and geological terrain where apparently easy tracks may lead into soft ground, riverbeds or restricted zones.
Check attraction operations before departure. Yumen is actively upgrading its tourism products. In 2026, the city introduced a combined tourism pass covering Chijin Gorge, Water World, the 693 Civil Air Defence Project and the Industrial Light Experience Hall, demonstrating how quickly operating packages and visitor arrangements are changing.
Respect industrial-site restrictions. Parts of the old oilfield remain associated with active industrial operations. Follow designated routes, do not climb machinery or enter fenced production areas, and observe all no-smoking and fire-prevention rules.
Do not confuse Yumen City with the famous Yumen Pass near Dunhuang. The well-known Yumen Pass archaeological tourism area (玉门关遗址) visited on Dunhuang itineraries is far west of Yumen City. Searching simply for “Yumen Pass” can send travellers in an entirely different direction.
How to Plan Yumen Efficiently
The most logical first-time route is:
Yumen New City – Old Yumen Petroleum Heritage – Magic Mountain or Chijin Gorge
For a short industrial-history trip:
Old Yumen – Oil City Park – Wang Jinxi Memorial Hall – 693 Project – Laojun Temple – Old Well No. 1
For an outdoor-focused trip:
Yumen New City – Chijin Gorge – Magic Mountain – Changma Area
Yumen works best for travellers who accept distance as part of the experience. Its appeal is not polished resort tourism but the contrast between an old oil city, a new Gobi city, abandoned and preserved industrial landscapes, modern energy development and enormous open terrain.
